Mono Beta Refresh 9

Thursday, May 15th, 2008 by: babbagelinden

The Mono regions on the beta grid were updated with a new version on Wednesday that resolves the following issues:

* SVC-2192 Fixed nested list in list initialisation.
* SVC-2309 Fixed a regression with nested lists in LSL.
* SVC-809 Fixed an old LSL bug with nested list initialization.
* SVC-1393 Rezzing scripts now uses a more efficient method of verification
* SVC-1522 llBase64ToString() Improved. Now 6x faster than LSL instead of 100x slower.
* SVC-2247 Changed the error message when trying to upload a no mod script to be more meaningful.
* SVC-2280 Fixed signature of llMakeFountain() deprecated function.
* SVC-2182 Fixed an exception for some functions returning keys.
* VWR-6643 Fixed recompile scripts in selection for group owned (deeded) scripts.
* SVC-1499 Added the unused print keyword to Mono.

We’re now getting really close to deploying Mono across the main grid, so if you haven’t already tested your scripts on Mono, please log in to the beta grid, recompile your scripted objects to run on Mono and if you have any problems file a JIRA report here or tell us at the Mono office hours held in Sandbox Goguen MONO on the beta grid on Wednesdays at 8AM and Fridays at 3PM. Please also let us know about your Mono successes - here’s a video of Amanda Levitsky’s maze generator running on the LSL virtual machine on the left and over 4 times faster on the Mono virtual machine on the right:

Thanks again for your continued support throughout the Mono beta process.

As part of our ongoing effort to provide you with the highest quality Second Life experience possible, part of our process is to ask ourselves, periodically, if we’re working on the right things.

Today we’d like to let you know we’re seriously considering whether Linden Lab should continue supporting Mac OS X 10.3, “Panther.” Our tracking shows that very few of you, about 1/4 of 1 percent of all of you, the entire base of Residents, are still using Apple’s Mac OS X 10.3 when logging into Second Life.

We’d like to let the Linden engineers stop working on supporting an operating system released in 2003, and instead move on to other work which will benefit a much larger group of Residents

If we do stop supporting that version of the OS, it would not be until 60 days from now, to make sure there is plenty of time for the news to spread.

To briefly review the last five years of Mac OS: Panther, OS 10.3, was first released in October 2003, and updated to 10.3.9 in 2005. Apple has followed Panther with two more recent versions of the Apple OS, “Tiger” (OS 10.4,) released in April 2005 and “Leopard,” (OS 10.5,) released in October 2007 and updated Feb. 2008.

What would it mean to “stop support”? Eventually we would stop developing for the SDK (software development kit ) of that operating system, and we would also stop doing QA testing on OS 10.3.9.

What would you notice? If you are one of the few logging in with that OS, you would still be able to do so the day we stop supporting it — for some time. Exactly how long we couldn’t guarantee, because we would no longer be testing and developing to make sure it does work.

So, Oh Residents, what say you?

So, yesterday’s office hours were attended by over 100 Residents! This marathon session lasted nearly 4 Hours and was a great chance to speak with many of you. I want to run over some of the issues discussed and provide you all with the transcript…

So, since yesterday’s viewer release, we have gotten a flurry of responses- about half seem to want to give us their first born child: “thank you for making this such a wonderful lag free experience now!” “runs better than release” “Great work! Great product!” … and about half want to tear us limb from limb “<expletive deleted>” “<expletive deleted>” “<really expletive expletive deleted>” :)

So, what *is* a resi to do?… (more…)

Friends. Romans. Residents. After months in First Look and Release Candidate phases, we are pleased to announce that the Second Life 1.19.1 Viewer, featuring WindLight atmospheric lighting and gobs of other stability, performance, and feature enhancements, is now available for download! And so….

Download It Here!!!

But what goodness does it contain?… (more…)

Hey all- just wanted to announce that after this week, WL Office Hours will merge with Release Candidate Office Hours. These are on Wednesdays at 3:00pm SLT at Bridie Linden’s house in LindenVillage.

This week, the schedule will be a bit mixed- today’s office hours, you may have noticed, are empty due to an unrelated meeting that most of the WL team needs to attend. Tomorrow, (Wed.), most of us will be at the RC Hours. Thursday, we will be at the standard WL Office Hours. Starting next week, it will only be the RC ones, in honor of WL’s new status :)

Happy Lighting,
Pastrami and the WL Team

Linden Lab continues to work on key areas of importance for our Residents, and alongside performance and stability is usability. We’re pleased to announce First Look: Dazzle, a “refresh” for the Second Life viewer’s appearance which makes the UI (User Interface) more accessible and pleasing. They say pictures are 1,000s of words, so have a look:

Dazzle / main viewer comparison

Is Dazzle just a color change?

No. Dazzle includes a new color scheme, and also has revised icon art (e.g., the build tools and Inventory window) and under-the-hood changes/cleanup which will make future customization easier.

How is making stuff look better going to improve my experience?

Hey all. This is a smallish update with only a few fixes- most importantly, we’re getting it out to incorporate a number of important fixes from Release Candidate 1.19.0.2.
And now, Bugs fixed…
