The simple(r) life

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 by: Lotte Linden

We have often heard that our webpages, such as login and support, are overly complicated. In an effort to simplify things, we have made some changes to our login page.
There is no change in functionality, you can still log into various parts of Secondlife.com as you alway have.
These changes will go live sometime between 11 and 12 am today, so if your login page suddenly looks like this *points down*, don’t worry, that’s only to make it easier for everyone!

[RESOLVED - 12:30pm PST] The issue has been resolved and you should be able to post events as normal.

It appears that residents are unable to add forthcoming events to our Events page at the moment. Sincere apologies for that. We’ll try to get that resolved as soon as we can.

Best Wishes to you.

As reported here, we’re headed for about 20 minutes of down time on our credit/debit card processing today, from 2:50 - 3:10 p.m. PST. Both card-based LindeX transactions and our ability to accept new cards into the system will be briefly impacted.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

[UPDATE] 28 feb, 08 7:04 pm PST –teeple]

The Router Gremlins seem happy again, at least for now. We’ll be monitoring throughout the evening. Thanks for your patience on this; except for relaying information to you, this issue’s been out of our hands. –teeple

PS I’ve edited the update timestamps. I have it on good authority that this year is 2008 C.E., not 2007…

[UPDATE 28 Feb, 08 5:06 pm PST --teeple]

We’re seeing the same patterns of disruption (including failed traceroutes) that hit us earlier today (please see below). Callers from the UK may be temporarily unable to access Live Help Support.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

[UPDATE 28 Feb 08, noon PST --teeple]

Routing between the US and the UK has been stable for about the last ten minutes. All Live Chat support functions (including Billing) are accessible to our testers.

[UPDATE 28 Feb 08, 10:52 a.m. PST --teeple]

It appears there’s a routing breakdown between the US and the UK. We’re still investigating, but for the moment, UK-based residents may be unable to log in to the Support portal.

Our own UK-based staff are able to access Second Life, but are reporting difficulties with accessing the portal as well.

Currently, Concierge and In World specialists are available via Live Chat for residents who are able to connect. Billing assistance is temporarily unavailable via Live Chat.

*****

Both residents and our own Live Chat staff are reporting disruptions in the chat service. We’re investigating ASAP.

If you’ve been inconvenienced by this, please accept our apologies.

Second Life Scheduled Maintenance, 2/29/08

Thursday, February 28th, 2008 by: rheyalinden

Second Life will undergo scheduled maintenance for Asset Server work from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM PST on 2/29/08. We do not expect to take Second Life down during this time, and there should be no effects visible to Residents. Because of the nature of this work, there may be some downtime if something should go wrong. We will post here if any problems arise during this scheduled maintenance. Thank you for your patience.

Credit and debit card processing will be unavailable on Saturday, 1 March, 2:50 - 3:10 p.m. PST.

This brief downtime is for vendor maintenance.  During the service period, our system will not accept new credit or debit card registrations, and card-based LindeX transactions will be declined.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

[6:35PM PST - Kate] The support portal is accessible on all of our web servers.  Classified search in the new inworld Search feature is turned back on.

[11:11 p.m. PST]

No news yet on a fix; we’ll keep you posted…

[10:20 am PST]

In order to diagnose the current issue we have switched off classified search in the new inworld Search feature

[Re-opened 9:00am PST - Data]

[Resolved 18:59pm PST - Rika] Support portal is now up and running.

Residents are reporting inability to connect to the Support portal from several Webservers within our site. The Web Team is working on restoring full access.

[Opened 5:08PM PST - Kate] We are re-opening this support issue. Support tickets, live chat and the Land Store are unavailable at this time. We will update as soon as they re-open.

[Resolved 3:03pm PST] Also, in a related note, display of in-world Classifieds in General Search have been temporarily turned off. -Classifieds are now turned back on.

[UPDATE 19 Feb 08, 4:56PM] Great news!  The auction site is available.

[UPDATE 19 Feb 08, 14:04 p.m. --teeple]

We’re still chipping away at the blockage. Our apologies for the wait :-(

****

[19 Feb 08, 7:19 a.m. --teeple]

There’s blockage in the auction pipeline somewhere this morning, keeping new properties from entering the queue.

A Web Team member is already climbing around in the murky depths with a blowtorch and a really big chisel. Hopefully, it won’t be long at all before we get things unjammed. We’ll keep you posted.

[RESOLVED] Disruption in PayPal Services

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 by: Teeple Linden

[UPDATE 19 Feb, 08, 10:23 a.m. PST --teeple]

PayPal services appear back to normal.

*****

[19 Feb 08, 10:09 a.m. PST --teeple]

It appears that PayPal is experiencing a widespread disruption in service. Both our internal system inquiries and our test consumer logins at the US PayPal site are returning 3004 error codes, “Unable to complete your request.” Lindens in the UK are getting similar results.

We’re inquiring for more information as urgently as we can. We’ll keep you apprised of anything we can find out.

[RESOLVED] More DNS Woes

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008 by: Teeple Linden

[RESOLVED 12 Feb 08 - 5:05 p.m. PST --teeple]

Whatever mix of re-routing, repair, and incantations has been involved, it appears network traffic is moving at speed again.

*****

[UPDATE 12 Feb 08 1:50 p.m. PST --teeple]

What’s the old adage about trouble coming in threes?

There are apparently more issues from a top level provider somewhere in the USA. We’ve requested assessment from our own upstream provider. We’ll keep you posted.

*****

[12 Feb 08 12:55 p.m. PST --teeple]

Wow. Apparently it’s International Borked Router Day or something. We have another group of residents who are getting DNS failures when they try to reach us. This time, the malfunction’s in London.

We can’t do much but wait it out along with the affected residents. We’ll get a notification from our upstream provider when the routing has been repaired, and let you know here.
