Today’s Release Candidate Viewer (1.18.6.0) contains more important bug fixes and new functionality that we welcome your feedback on. As a reminder, Release Candidate viewers are optional updates that contain the latest round of bug fixes and/or soon-to-be-released new features. Please visit the test software page to download the Second Life 1.18.6 (RC0) Release Candidate viewer. Source code will be available for download shortly, too.

Changes:

  • Age Verification (for details on this, please see Robin Linden’s post):
    • The user interface for parcel and estate access has been clarified and improved.
    • Added the ability to restrict access to parcels and estates to age verified adults.
    • Removed the ability to *ban* access to Residents who have provided payment info or who have used payment info. We continue to support the ability to *allow* access to only those who have provided payment info.
  • Login/Authentication
    • We changed the way viewers login to Second Life. This was developed to support future anti-Fraud efforts. The changes are largely internal — apart from some minor cosmetic differences the behavior of the login screen is unchanged.
  • Crash Reporter
    • The crash reporting mechanism has been improved. Following a crash, more useful information will be sent and reports should now take less than 10 seconds.

We just made Second Life 1.18.5 Viewer Release Candidate (RC1) available on the site. Please go to the test software page to download and try these pre-production viewers.

REMINDER: Release Candidates (RC) are intended for evaluation purposes. Please try them out only if you want to participate in the bug reporting process and identify issues before these become the default viewer. You can have both a Release Candidate and a production viewer installed on your computer at the same time, so if issues are encountered when testing an RC you can switch back to the production viewer.

In addition to the fixes and new features announced as part of Second Life 1.18.5 (RC0), the following updates have been made:

Changes:

  • Search button always enabled in Search All panel
    • Empty searches show the classifieds splash page
  • Teleport is the first option listed for landmarks in inventory
  • You can now uncheck the for-sale check box for certain older objects that are marked for-sale but cannot actually be purchased (due to permissions: owner no-transfer, or for-sale copy but owner no-copy). See VWR-2908.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed search turning transparent instead of minimizing
  • Fixed VWR-3073: Right-clicking someone’s attachments to view profile loads (???) (???) instead
  • Fixed VWR-2908: Sale Item Search should not list certain kinds of items.

Please note we are still adjusting how we generate search results. We will be adding a “beta” label to the search page to indicate the results algorithm is not final.

Source code drop coming soon!

Please continue to report any new issues in the Issue Tracker and be sure to set “Affects Version/s” to “1.18.5 Release Candidate“.

[3:00am PST] I’ve just confirmed that Ops gave our database a gentle nudge and everything appears to be humming along happily. If your L$ balance continues to show as Loading… then please exit Second Life and log back in.

Thanks for your patience and have a great morning!

This post announces a survey that is a new part of the Resident Inventory Loss Analysis project. The Inventory Loss Reduction Initiative, that this project is part of, has already eliminated one major cause of inventory loss. We are now working to identify and eliminate all other causes. We have analyzed many potential sources of inventory loss, and we are looking for your feedback in helping us to take the next steps. By answering a few simple questions, you will help us to find scenarios that we might have missed in our analysis, leading to new solutions for reducing inventory loss.

Please fill out this survey to help us better understand the reality of inventory loss scenarios you have experienced. If you have experienced multiple inventory losses, please enter one survey for each type of loss (there is no need to create a survey for every item - what we are looking for is patterns of inventory loss). Also please note that this survey is anonymous and does not replace reporting an inventory loss through normal channels as a way of recovering your inventory. This survey is being done to identify patterns, and will not trigger individual loss investigations.

Happy Monday!

After spending several weeks as a Release Candidate viewer, we are pleased to make the Second Life 1.18.3 Viewer available the primary download today. With your help reporting issues in the Issue Tracker and through public bug triages, we were able to find and fix bugs along the way. Thanks to this great participation from Residents, we have a high degree of confidence in the stability of this viewer. Thanks to everyone who took the time to evaluate the Release Candidate viewer!

There are a few known issues that we are working on:

  • Sculpted prims with alpha in the sculpted texture are invisible
  • The command line option “-drop” does not work on Linux or OSX clients.
  • VWR-2268: Role Description causes Apply Changes, Ignore Changes, Cancel alert even if you don’t have rights to change
  • VWR-2551: Error in macview.xcodeproj — invalid dependencies
  • VWR-2404: lossless texture compression on small textures not lossless
  • VWR-2552: Telehub gui very broken in RC

Please continue to report any new issues in the Issue Tracker and be sure to set “Affects Version/s” to 1.18.3.

Keep an eye on the Test Software page as we move on to the next Release Candidate viewer (1.18.4) soon!

Thanks!
