Welcome to the latest “Inside the Lab” Podcast, a Discussion on Education in Second Life

I had the pleasure of talking with Pathfinder Linden and Claudia Linden about some of the fascinating education projects taking place in Second Life. These two expert Lindens share some of what they’ve learned working with educators inworld and at conferences, as well as from participation with some of the groups described in the podcast (see links, below.)

Third in the series was Inside the Lab Podcast with the WindLight Team, packed with helpful information on WindLight, including information on stability improvements, and Torley’s favorite new WindLight features.

Please join us for an informal look into the people, projects, and culture at Linden Lab.

The second edition of our ‘Inside the Lab’ podcast series is now available. The series started with Philip Linden’s vision for Second Life in 2008. This time we delve into the technical aspects of Second Life with Joe Miller, VP of platform and technology development. Joe talks us through the technical priorities for our engineering team, focusing on four key areas:

    • Sim stability - with the launch of Havok 4.6
    • Sim performance - with the introduction of Mono for script compiling
    • Viewer stability - by introducing a new crash reporter and graphics card drivers
    • Viewer performance - via Windlight and the new Dazzle UI
Joe even sets some goals in terms of performance for the next quarter which we’ll all be able to track from the monthly Quality Metrics we release.
I’d like to thank Joe for his time in talking with me and for sharing some insights into the stability and performance efforts the engineering team is working on. Let me know know in the comments if there are other aspects you’d like us to cover in the next edition.
Until then - thanks for listening!

I’m happy to introduce a new podcast series entitled “Inside the Lab.” You can download the first installment here.

Featuring CEO and founder Philip Rosedale, the podcast covers the growth of Second Life and how Linden Lab has dealt with the technical challenges of scaling the world, the encroachment of the real world into Second Life, Virtual World industry trends, and the growing competition.

Next year I’ll talk with different Linden Lab team members about what they’re doing in Second Life and how that impacts your experience. I’ll also be looking for your feedback and comments about the types of subjects you’d like covered in future podcasts.

Happy Holidays, see you at the snowball fight!
