[Update 12:40 AM PST] RESOLVED. All regions have now been restarted. - Matthew (more…)
Second Life Maintenance performed today, Wednesday, January 9th 2008 has been completed. Thank you for your patience.
As reported here, Second Life is scheduled to be offline for service this coming Wednesday from 6 a.m. until noon Pacific. The principle reason for the downtime is to upgrade the asset servers. However, a separate maintenance effort is scheduled for the voice chat system. That maintenance window is scheduled to fall well within the boundaries of the general downtime. Should the grid re-open before voice chat maintenance is concluded, we’ll notify you here. Thanks!
[UPDATE 15:04 AM PST] Our Ops team has resolved all login issues. Enjoy your Second Life, and thank you for your patience!
[UPDATE 12:11 PM PST] Operations is still closing in on the database issue which is causing the login trouble. Since logins for both the Website and the SL client are authenticated centrally, residents who don’t have an active session on the Website may need to retry more than once to open a session for the Support Portal.
[UPDATE 8:25 AM PST] It appears that some residents are experiencing intermittent failures to login and may need to attempt to login more than once. Our apologies for the inconvenience. We are monitoring the situation and hope to resolve the issue in due course. -Matthew
[UPDATE 7:00 AM PST] Login problems temporarily returned for some residents recently, but things should be resolved once more. We apologize to those of you who may have experienced problems logging in. -Chiyo
[Resolved 7:35 PM PST] Logins and teleporting have been restored.
Second Life residents may currently be experiencing some difficulties with logins and teleporting. We are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and we will keep this post updated as the situation progresses.
[RESOLVED 2:18 AM] Our operations colleagues have worked to resolve the situation. We have restarted all regions we could find that exhibited the problem and the rate of any new regions having this difficulty is low. Our operations team will continue to monitor to see if it continues to occur. Residents should report problems via the support portal if they find that a particular region continues to prevent them saving notecards or script or taking items from in-world. Thank you to you all for your patience and understanding while we worked on this issue. - Matthew
[Update 1:24 AM PST] The situation has been resolved in most of the regions it originally affected. It did not affect all regions in-world. For the majority of residents there should be no problems.
We are restarting the small number of regions where we are continuing to find inventory (and other) difficulties. Things which indicate that your region is still affected will include attachments not saving, objects not being able to be taken or deleted from in-world and scripts/notecards not being saved. - Matthew
[Update 12:12 AM PST] Regions are being restarted at present at 2-second intervals. We are working on this carefully so please continue to bear with us. As per our original posting, please do not rez or edit any items in your inventory or attachments on your avatar. We will update you with more asap. - Matthew
[Update 11:12 PST] Approximately 1,000 regions are in the process of being restarted to help resolve this issue. No final word yet when this will be resolved. — Frontier

[Update 8:21 PST] Operations is investigating scattered reports of ongoing issues with rezzing and reclaiming assets. We will be keeping this post current with updates until the issue is resolved. -Elle
[RESOLVED 2:20 PST] It turns out a handful of regions needed restarting to completely clear the asset issues. Thanks for your patience.
[Update 1:30 PM PST] Our Operations Team is still checking on a small number of residual inventory problems. If you’re still having trouble rezzing or claiming assets, please be patient, and we’ll keep you posted.
[UPDATE 12:15 PM PST] Inventory problem is resolved. Second Life is now open again.
Second Life is currently experiencing Inventory Issues. It is highly recommended that Residents do not rez or edit any items in their inventory or attachments on their Avatars. Second Life at this time is restricted to Linden Login only until this issue is resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
After receiving reports of various inworld inventory problems which have been affecting some residents, including the inability to take things from inworld and avatars reverting to a previous appearance, we have tracked the problem down to an issue with an inventory server which crashed slightly after 17:00. The issue has been identified and corrected and affected residents should find the situation has returned to normal. We appologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.
The support portal will be off line Sunday, 30 Dec, 9:00 - 9:30 pm PST, for a quick round of system maintenance. During that time, ticket and live chat access will be unavailable.
[UPDATE 5:18 pm PST] System up and running. We have resolved all issues and the system is up and running now.

We’ve recovered a 463,000 inventory items that were lost and fixed 79,000 inventory folders. These belonged to a total of 143,000 Residents. They were not showing up in Residents’ inventories because they did not have a valid parent folder and many of them have been lost for quite some time. They have all been placed in the their owner’s top-level folder called “My Inventory”. If the items don’t show up and you want to thoroughly check whether they have been recovered, you can clear your Second Life Viewer cache, restart your Second Life Viewer, log back in and check your “My Inventory” folder.
In addition, on November 26th we repaired missing Library textures that a number of Residents had reported missing. These were for all the Residents that were on one of our inventory servers, where the problem had occurred. Sorry for not posting that at the time we repaired it.
We realize that these two repairs only recover some lost inventory. We continue to work hard behind the scenes to track down and begin to fix the root causes of inventory loss as I described in a previous post on our Inventory Loss Reduction Initiative.
[UPDATED 1:01 p.m. PST]
Land sales are functional across all regions now. We apologize to those residents inconvenienced by the interruption.
*****
Multiple regions are offering “Error fetching data” alerts when residents attempt to buy parcels. Operations is diagnosing and correcting the problem now, and we’ll keep you posted.
