Jesse Linden's Blog
At SLCC this year we offered to setup a music development mailing list to facilitate discussion around a very large topic - music in Second Life! Resident musicians, venue owners, buillders, scripters, audiences, and promoters are all invited to participate. Linden Lab recognizes all the innovative work that has been going on in the music community and we want to do all that we can to help it thrive and continue to grow. Our goal in this is to work in concert with you to make Second Life a viable platform for music promotion, performance, and distribution. (more…)
We are currently accepting your submissions for a new section of our website called ‘Resident Resources’. These are Resident-created tools or services that extend the capabilities of Second Life and improve the Resident experience. Examples of this might include everything from identity and discovery tools to animation editors and photo sharing sites, to social networking services designed specifically for Second Life users. [UPDATE 1:14PM - 06/08] Search appears to be fully functional. We will provide more details on what happened soon. Meanwhile, we are still investigating the cause of the issue and watching closely to make sure the fix is working correctly.
[UPDATE 2:51 PM] We are aware these problems are still ongoing and are continually working to get it fixed as soon as possible. If you are currently sending support requests on one of the issues below, please refrain until we have fixed the asset issues at hand. Thanks for your patience as we work on the grid. Best!
[UPDATE 11:59 AM] Our Operations department is still working on this issue, which has also been reported to have spread to other areas of Second Life’s in-world experience. There have been reports of Linden dollar balances not showing, the map not loading fully as it should, and teleports failing. We’ll have it back up and running like normal as soon as possible. Thanks.
[UPDATE 11:51 PM] It turns out fixing search is going to take more than initially thought, it will probably be down for most of the night. We apologize for the inconvenience and will have a team of crack Operations people patching it up in the morning.
We’ve received reports tonight of search not working properly. It is currently being looked into by our Operations department and should be back up as soon as possible. Thanks for your understanding during this maintenance.
[Update 05/07/07] I will be holding an informal office hour this Thursday, May 10th at 4PM PDT to discuss this topic. Attendence is open to all interested Residents. The location is Grasmere 154, 59, 27.
One of the coolest things about Second Life is the variety of events happening in-world 24/7. One of the best ways to find out what’s going on at any given moment is to check the Events listings tab under ‘Search’. Unfortunately, some Residents are treating this community space as a venue for free advertising and spam. We have made it very clear in the events posting rules that this is misuse of the system and may result in disciplinary action against your account. (more…)
We have a new job opening available for a Web Content Editor to help us keep our websites fresh and up to date. Ideally, we’d like to fill this job from within the Second Life community. We’re looking for someone who understands Second Life, has a strong interest in virtual worlds, and is ready to dive in and make an impact at Linden Lab. (more…)
UPDATE [April 6, 10:11PM PDT] We continue to encounter some delays updating billing information. We anticipate delays and errors to continue throughout the weekend. We are working to isolate the source and will have these functions restored as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and understanding. — Robin Linden
[Update, April 5, 12:04pm PDT] As we perform hardware upgrades, some residents will also encounter some lag between the time they input their payment data and the time it will be live and available for use. Currently, delays are as long as 30-minutes. We anticipate the lag do reduce to the 2-3 minute range by Friday. While we do not anticipate a need for residents to re-input the payment data, if it is not showing as available for use by Friday, it may be necessary to do so.
[Update: April 4, 9:17pm SL Time] Necessary changes made today to the billing processing system are continuing tomorrow and include hardware updates. Currently, delays can be expected with payment processing, most specifically with those who are required to update payment information. Please wait at least a half hour when updating Credit Card information, before using the Land Store, LindeX or Registration.
[Update: April 4, 5:15pm SL Time] The Land Store, LindeX and Registration temporarily offline while we work on billing issues. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Will post more info here as we have it.
[Update: April 4, 4:19PM PDT] We’re still working on this. No ETA just yet. We’ll post another update as soon as we have more information.
We are experiencing slowdowns on our web-based billing and account information applications. You may experience slow response times when attempting to change your account or payment information.
There are also problems with the Land Store we are investigating. Our web team is hard at work addressing these issues. I will post an update here as soon as we have a fix. Thanks for your continued patience.
[Update 11:39am PDT - All systems back online, thanks for your patience]
We’re currently in the middle of upgrading hardware and backend systems as we build out the capabilities to handle growth of approximately one million new Resident accounts a month.
As part of this process, today we will need to take the Land Store, Lindex, and Registration capabilities temporarily offline. We are expecting this outage to last approximately two hours, beginning at 11am PDT. Please note: all USD transactions, including those performed from within Second Life, will be affected. We will post an update as soon as these capabilites are back online.
[Update 4:53 pm PDT - Happy to say this issue has been resolved]
We are experiencing intermittent issues with logins, offline regions and other in-world activity. Our network engineers are addressing these now. Please stay tuned as we work to fix these problems. I will post an update here as soon as it becomes available.
We are pleased to announce that our maintenance work is complete and Second Life is now open to all Residents. (more…)
[Update 5:37PM PDT] Please note that our payment systems and Registration pages will also be offline as well during this maintenance window.
In our continuing effort to improve the Grid, Second Life will be unavailable tomorrow, April 4, from 7am - 11am PDT. (14:00-18:00 GMT) (more…)
