OMG! Free Linden Snow?!
Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 9:50 AM by: jplindenDON’T EVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD. Linden Lab won’t ask you for it, and if anyone does, they want to do you harm.
Sandwiched somewhere between John Gabriel’s Greater (greatest?) Internet Theory and Godwin’s Law exists another apparent inevitability - The surprising ease with with the word “free” can disable one’s otherwise extraordinarily capable skills of logic and critical thinking. In order to facilitate the most correct alphabetical sandwiching, let’s call it the JP Linden lesser theory of, “Gadzooks! Free!” As in, Gadzooks! This spam - It says I’m going to get this for free! Handing over my login and password is just my way to help them help me get to free stuff! Type faster fingers! Faster!”
Half-joking aside, hundreds of Residents were victims of unauthorized access to their accounts in the last month. Account security is serious business, regardless of what finds you in Second Life. If your password is free to a criminal for the asking, so is your inventory, your friends & groups, your land, your L$, and whatever unspent balance remains in the payment method on file.
- If you are being spammed in-world or anywhere else regarding the purchase of L$ or free L$, you’re almost certainly being spammed by a fraudster.
- Never use your Second Life login or password outside of the Second Life viewer or secondlife.com - Your password is not required for someone to send you L$.
- Never provide your password or security answer via chat or IM to anyone inworld (including Lindens and people claiming to be Lindens), and when accessing a password protected terminal, always double check which window you’re typing that password into.
- If you’ve been the victim of fraud, contact our fraud hotline at 800 860 6990. Then, talk about it. Post your experience to forums, blogs and chat. Tell others about who it was and how it happened.
It is unfortunately impossible to list, in real-time, every Website operating a phishing operation - many are gone before they are discovered. Basic Web and search engine optimization skills are all that are needed to create a site that appears legitimate. We therefore urge you to make every effort to know who you’re dealing with, and always remember, if the offer is too good to be true, it probably is.

Hiya sorry to post it here looked every where i cant seem to change my cache dir in pref
lots of crashes yesterday to pentium 2,8 1 gig memory 256 ati card
May 16th, 2008 at 9:59 AM
I promise to change my password if every Linden reading this sends me a free bear.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Where do I get my snow?
May 16th, 2008 at 10:06 AM
@2 Send me your current password and I guarantee every Linden will send you a free bear… honest.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Here’s your snow, Dragger.
I’m afraid it’s a bit yellow…. but its snow, right?
May 16th, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Of course, its only yellow to stop it whiting out in Windlight…
apparently….
so I was told…..
ummm….
May 16th, 2008 at 10:39 AM
But… what about the free snow? I want my free Linden Snow!
May 16th, 2008 at 10:40 AM
So, does this mean that we can ‘name names’ in the official forums if we’ve been scammed by this ‘free’ thing? If not, then don’t bother telling us to post it to forums, okay?
May 16th, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Good heads up…
All the usual password rules applies too, you all know the drill
Change it more than a few times a year, make it from a word not in a dictionary, have it contain both small and bit letters as well as numbers, but no special characters.
And keep it safe of course.
Bad password: honeypot
Good password: H0n3ypt
(And that is NOT my password)
Now is there any white snow for us that does NOT use the windlight ™ ?
There are after all may ways of making it yellow if that is needed… uhm… ok, better end this right here…
<<——- Avatar went that way
May 16th, 2008 at 10:45 AM
If someone actually falls for this, while I know it’s a mean thing to say…. They deserve it to happen. ANYTHING personal, regardless of what it is, should not be given out… Even if it is someone you trust, there’s always a possibility.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:48 AM
If I can make a suggestion here since we are talking about security, why no have uu use a user name instead on the first and last name of our character that everyone knows? Make it harder for the bad guys to work things out.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
mix alpha and numeric and the longer the better
May 16th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
For those who are not familiar with strong password here are some really helpful guidelines. Dont use words with any meaning; create a personal word that only you know and not related to anything of your life. Use numbers and a special character. Place the special character anywwhere and Dont use the Capital Letter at the beginning or the end of the word. Place the capital letter in a non common spot.
Anther thing you can do is use a word in another language instead or your own; delete a letter of the word to make it nonsense and again place numbers and special character somewhere in the word. I hope this could help some people.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:01 AM
I don’t get the “snow” reference.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Did this have anything to do with the “copybot” link that dissention spammed in world that had the out of place dll that should not have been in the import/ export testclient.
Looked like phishing to me
May 16th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
You cannot tempt me with your offers of free snow! I live in Grishin! I have snow up to my hips!
May 16th, 2008 at 11:17 AM
I got my free Linden snow!!! but then the asset server ate it
Can someone else give me a copy of theirs, my password is 12345, same as my luggage.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I suppose you keep it right next to your Perri-air, Summer?
May 16th, 2008 at 11:37 AM
@14: I don’t get the “snow” reference.
People are getting spam for a site called freelindensnow.com, which is meant to be “Free Lindens Now” but can also be read “Free Linden Snow”.
Maybe I’m not supposed to mention the website name here on the blog, but the joke in the article subject just doesn’t make sense without knowing it.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:38 AM
‘Free Linden Snow’ is most likely a play on ‘Free Lindens Now’
May 16th, 2008 at 11:48 AM
@Raudf: my thoughts exactly-I wish they’d make a ToS change for the forums so you CAN actually name spammers and fraudsters!

FREE Linden Snow job!
Welcome to SecondLife®, Your World, Your Imagination, Our Rules (which can and will change erratically) Pick a name and password, no need for a credit card…we KNOW you are an adult *wink wink*.
If you do have a credit card registered, or use PayPal don’t tell a soul your password, or you could lose a lot of money. Another thing to never ever do is buy land. One day you might wake up and *poof*, we’ve changed the rules and helped ourselves to some of your money. Too bad, so sad, we’re glad, you’ve been had.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:15 PM
@Argent - Are you saying your password is Squeamish Ossifrage?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:26 PM
@ #2… a free Bear eh? Black bear or brown bear? Maybe polar! And remember, bears are a lot of responsibility!

Is it maybe to prevent phishing that group chat has not been working since 5 AM SLT?
I called support about that, so please save your comments

personally, i think the best way to make a good strong password is to simply almost encrypt it (very very weak but still) like
say give each letter a numerical counterpart so “Cheetah” would comes out as 3442018, you can do it a lot of ways like spaces or not if one of the letters is more than two digits too, i just used a very basic a=1 b=2 method for that, but noone will guess it even still.

May 16th, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Not surprising that people pick stupid passwords to begin with when you enforce almost no password complexity limit and the one proposal to require strong passwords (WEB-314) has been fought tooth and nail by people who for one reason or another think that it’s better to have weak passwords, and that isn’t taking into account plenty of other mis-steps from the residents and LL alike on security and by LL on security policy (no naming names is a stupid rule especially when you’re now asking us to break it)

Sir, that is gold.

Very much appreciate this sort of thing being posted.
I’d also like to add: be very careful from *where* you are logging in, on your main account.
The coffeehouse wireless network might not be as secure as you might assume.

Wait.. What? This isn’t about snow? Which Lindens are being held captive and how do we free them? I know about Magellan but who else is locked up??
More bears, please!
May 16th, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Raudf’s point in #8 is an important one. We’ve been told MANY MANY times that naming names is against the Terms of Service. And now we have a Linden asking us to name names. The policy regarding scams and divulging information about them needs to be clarified.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:09 PM
Name names in outside forums and blogs. Naming names is only disallowed on the Linden Lab forum. Not so difficult to understand, since they want us to be a community based in but not reliant upon SL.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Hmm have we changed viewers? All 3 of my current viewers say update required, but no file is found. meaning I can’t login, or is it just a glitch because the grid is chocka block full with 60k of people and unverified bots?
May 16th, 2008 at 2:14 PM
I’m getting the same thing Tegg - no Mac version of the viewer - saying Can’t find file and going nowhere.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:22 PM
@8 Raudf @21 Alyx, and @36 Shirley, We’re not asking you to name names in the forums — as you correctly point out, that would be against forum guidelines.
What I do suggest is that if you’ve been a victim of a scam, talk about your experience. It’s not about giving out the names/urls (and I doubt you’d want to give a scammer more link love, would you?) but you can describe generally what happened and help make sure that folks are alerted to these kinds of issues, when they’re happening.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:32 PM
The old Release Candidate won’t connect and the new one won’t download (the whole SL website seems screwed, but no notes anywhere…), so passwords are redundancies. Completely secure - no SL at all.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:36 PM
#41, try clearing your cache and restarting your computer, that sounds really rather peculiar…
May 16th, 2008 at 2:45 PM
The second life website keeps asking me for my password what should i do?
May 16th, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Is there any reason the account name needs to be the same as our publicly visible avatar name? There’s no reason my account name (what I log in as) couldn’t be something that *isn’t* splashed all over SL.
Multiple layers of defense, and all that.
It’s something that many big companies do, letting your user name be anything you can remember, and then your public name, email address, and all that are all just aliases. Very handy when someone gets married, they can get a new public name by themselves without having to go through IT Hell to get their account fixed up.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:57 PM
@43: Type it in and wait for your free lindens, I imagine.

FYI: within the last few days there have been alot of peaple trying to get alot of peaple into free L$ groups so also look out for that, and finnaly somone made a notice about the random scamming that hs been happening
May 16th, 2008 at 4:15 PM
I think the use of strong passwords to access SL is an extraordinarily bad idea. Just think how much extra load these long feature rich passwords could put on the databases. Residents who wish to use them should be made to give up wearing prim hair to compensate. And to those Residents I say …. if logins are disabled before you have finished typing your 20 character password you only have yourselves to blame.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:41 PM
Hey all, thanks LL for the reminder,i have to say that you would have to be pretty damm guilible to give that kind of thing out on the basis of “free lindens” i got that IM and laughed, thinking damm you cant even get away from cold callers HERE (we get RL calls all the time lol) but seriously though, i have to say that even tho its great to be reminding everyone like this, to make out like its a joke in the first part of the statement is kinda unprofessional in my humble opinion.
As stupid a Q as this may seem, what about “Linden Lab won’t ask you for it, and if anyone does, they want to do you harm.” maybe you guys should jus be clear about the resident logins on this site also since this kinda thing is gonna make alot of people wonder
Anyho many thanks again and keep up the grid *coughs* sorry the good work up XXX
Katt nice to see making an effort to reply to people, but jus a note if you ever played SL longer than 5 mins which im sure you have of course silly me, but youd know that USUALLY if theres a copy bot or scam or anything of that nature goin round ALOT of groups usually put the message out then others copy n paste it to their respective groups, thats a part of the ettiqette that ive personally participated in and witnessed
May 16th, 2008 at 4:58 PM
On my website, the user is given a random password. They can of course choose to change their password. However, I have a BIG notice that advises them to NOT use the same pass as their SL account. If you have a legitimate website, you should do the same too.
I certainly don’t want to know anyone’s SL password and definatly don’t want people keeping them in my database, making it a target for hackers. Other MMORPGs I’ve been involved with had this problem with people using their game pass on a fan site…and the fan site gets hacked.
So, go ahead and hack into my user database..you wont get anyone’s SL pass.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Yah, I hand out randomly generated passwords via email. It verifies their email address AND makes sure they at least start out with a sane password.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:18 PM
great subject line! i was looking for free snow too! but it is sad that people take advantage of others. those peeps suc! bah on you.
thank you for the write up, it should be common sense but sl is still so new and the people that will prey on others jump right in.

I live in Livigno . . . I already HAVE Free Linden Snow.
I learned a very, very long time ago (after a website of mine was hacked and re-edited to link to a porn site) to never, EVER use a dictionary word as a password. Now all my passwords for my various personas are invented words, with numbers added depending on where I’m logging in.
It is good to see that you noticed the flurry of hacked accounts and are trying to get the word out. Pat on the back for that one.
And now back to your regularly scheduled bitchfest . . .

Seriously though, would have thought everyone on the planet would have seen enough spam mail to know NOT to click random links.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:50 PM
2/3 of the logins are already known. How about LL help us with account security by letting us set our own “user name” that is different than our SL names?
May 16th, 2008 at 6:02 PM
I whole heartedly agree with the suggestion for an account name that does not match the avatar name. Additionally I would love to see the option for additional security similar to what is available from Paypal of having a security key generator that generates a new random access key for each use. Even if this security key were only used for areas that require more security like buying and selling lindens and processing credits out of SL.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:34 PM
here we go again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You shut down account with no warning then you force people to call LL………….How many poeople need to call to take care of this matter? How many accounts are ou thter? and you say people have been giving out there passwords??????I smell BULL**** as they say ust because people got im about lindens means they had their accounts shut down? even if they smart enought NOT to reply to the e-mail to start with? Why is it we have to do worse part of this when LL just tells us ” YOU HAVE TO CALL” if you guys did you part protecting the games this BS as they say would not happen.

@34, If it’s your computer that you’re using, I wouldn’t worry too much about using the coffee house wireless network ( or any other network ). That’s because I’m sure that LL provides secure end to end encryption between the view and their servers. Right? Right? ( Oh please let me be right )
I *would* be very concerned about using a public computer though, or any other computer that I wasn’t absolutely certain to be free of malware.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:14 PM
Here are some of my anti-password-cracking suggestions:
1. Don’t use stupid passwords: “Dragon” “Happy”
2. Don’t use stupid passwords with a number in front or behind it.
3. Don’t use the name of your car: “Camry” “Corvette”
4. Don’t use the name of your car with a number in front or behind it.
5. Don’t use the name of SO.
6. See Rules 2 and 4.
7. Don’t use the name of your pet.
8. See Rules 2 and 4 and 6.
9. Don’t use your own name.
10. See Rules 2 and 4 and 6 and 8.
11. Don’t use a dictionary word
12. Don’t use combinations of two or more dictionary words
13. Use a password that is more than 8 characters long
14. Use a password that contains a “/” and a “\”
15. Run a password cracker on your PC and see if it can crack it.
16. Keep your system up-to-date to avoid system vulnerabilities
17. Avoid pron sites that want to install extra software
18. Change your password often, especially if 1-12 above are not obeyed along with 16-17.
19. If available, use Challenge Keys and custom pins.
20. If you own a laptop, keep it safe!
21. If you access the net on someone else’s PC, do not use it to log into secure sites.
22. Subscribe to security newsgroups.
Well, I have tons more suggestions, but truthfully, if somebody can intercept your data, they can crack your password. If somebody can access or steal your hardware with your data on it, they can crack your password.
Me? Systems Architect for 20+ years. Systems != Microsoft (btw).
May 16th, 2008 at 8:20 PM
The recent attacks were not based on the security question, this was a fault in Linden Lab’s employees at tech support.
The person who did it was able to access the account by confirming the birth date and email, by luck.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:30 PM
UM@65: No, didn’t say anything even vaguely like that.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:44 PM
Yeah, having a difficult password is a good idea, but not if you can’t remember it or have to write it down. I have 6 passwords just for work. There’s no way I can remember a password that doesn’t contain any words or names.
. . . And I just realized my lot is in a tropical region and snow would probably be a bad idea anyway. Bummer.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:45 PM
@70 “The recent attacks were not based on the security question, this was a fault in Linden Lab’s employees at tech support.

How do you know that?
May 16th, 2008 at 10:07 PM
One thing I am concerned about is how you would get your account recovered if an account-hijacking occoured. I know you mentioned the hotline but I doubt that you provide the service to roll-back transactions and object deletions.
In most sitations, getting your password back simple is not enough
May 16th, 2008 at 10:13 PM
@11, Christos Atlantis
That is the best idea I’ve heard on this subject. That would solve SO many problems and make it easier to login… But mainly solve security problems..

Pity most people will never see this as Katt’s ineptitude means the title doesn’t appear on the login page.

I think we should all login by an account numbere and our UUID is what our creations etc link to, then we could have different displayed names for RP, there would be a choice in everyones viewer to display real names or RP names.

“-If you’ve been the victim of fraud, contact our fraud hotline at 800 860 6990.”
I think I am right in saying 1-800 numbers only work in North America. Is there a number for people outside N America, the other 70% of users, to call? (Not that I have been a victim of fraud, yet.)
The most stupid mistake I have heard of is someone letting their “friend” use their account to see how wonderful SL is… The next thing they knew their bank account was missing large sums… I am hyper-sensitive about online banking, but I don’t think about security for SL in quite the same way even though it could be just as damaging in terms of the ability to empty my account.

Posting here off topic does not matter since nothing in the game seems to work properly any longer. Scripts that I have had for 3 years now report not in the database seems to me as if you people just have no idea of what you are doing. There is no excuse for this slip shod way of doing business. Growing massively tired of the incompetence demonstrated by you. The proof is in the pudding and yours is here for all to see. You should be embarrassed to call yourselves programmers. I have seen more consistent results from high school students.I used to think that there was some hope but it appears that the game can not be supported with the current level of ability exhibited on a now daily basis. You folks as a team would not last a quarter in the corporate world. A great environment has been created it is just too bad that lack of talent is going to result in it’s destruction.
This appears to be a continuation of the asset data server fiasco which has been going on for over a year now. When something fails with this frequency there is something wrong with your basic concept. Open your eyes and observe you can not see forest for the trees.
May 17th, 2008 at 3:32 AM
Yes definitely watch your password oh by the way it will not matter soon because if things keep going this way you won’t have a place to use it. As of now 3:32 AM SL time the game is not playable.
May 17th, 2008 at 3:35 AM
I think a lot of us would like to hear a “State of the Grid” speech from this new CEO (whom we have not heard from) on an annual or twice yearly basis. During which we get a recap of the challenges faced, what was addressed, what was not addressed and why, how things stand, and what the true 5 year plan for LL and SL is at that point in time.
As for on topic why don’t you use 4 or 5 words (not forming a sentence struct) all mixed case and “l33t speaked” in a mix and change your password on a monthly basis? I do agree resident names should not be the primary key for the accounts making it a log factor more difficult to brute force. But you can’t stop social engineering or internal security breaches anywhere so security is first only as qualified as the staff and the system the staff built. An example of social engineering into trusted staff would be an H1B visa holder gaining employment at a large entertainment company and working into a position of trusted access to the databases and then downloading the identity information to a laptop and walking out the door with it. How do you stop this sort of social engineering since you won’t know till after the fact and only if you are logging the SQL statements and the associated connection info and take the time to review it? Pretty common scenario really.
CC information is not supposed to be stored in an unencrypted state anyway. So if thats a problem it needs to be fixed as a top priority before the merchant status for accepting credit cards is revoked.

you forgot to include

could we also get a little more update on that fixing the traffic update?
its been sitting there for a while. I know this is offtopic here but theres nowhere else to go.
our Sim sat at 0 for 2 days then updated once.. then strangely took a plummet in traffic and has stayed there for 3 days.
a word on how its going and what is being done and approx when it might be fixed would be much more that .. just working on it.
ppl pay to have their places listed, then when traffic is reset to 0 that really means nothing and of course there is no refund. not being searchable in places also makes sales drop considerably delivering a double whammy.

Alas, alas, three times alas, there is no refund - and here we go again… once again “refund” - /me bursts out laughing.

@91 Ann said “I think a lot of us would like to hear a “State of the Grid” speech from this new CEO (whom we have not heard from) on an annual or twice yearly basis.”
Impressive indded. Still, what will be the use if it please ?We do not need no speech neither a party with the CEO.
1) We need LL to have a disciplined requirement management process. that is not the case.
2) We need those requirements to be planned and tracked.
3) For this, as residents, we ALSO need a well-managed and controlled requirement elicitation process for the same. Which is far for being the case.
4) there is no point #4.
Basta, come sta la luna

Can anyone understand in here that without any requirement collection, ranking, clubbing etc… WE CANNOT AS RESIDENTS :
- get any homogeneous view on what we want to see stabilized, developed, postponed, etc..
- get any form of agreement with LL for the above
- communicate the whole DOCUMENTED items as a set of demands to be implemented from a user view (i.e.: without entering tech details as seen both in here and Jira).
Can you simply understand this very basic idea ???

Free Lindens now…
Remember this website? Well, apparently they’ve given up on trying to scam people through assorted survey fakery. They’ve stepped up to straightforward theft, and want your account credentials — in exchange for L$25,000 (which, quite obviously, you …

the snow that the person doesn’t get it reference to “snow job” meaning lying to get what they want or defrauding someone else. Hence snow. There are loads of scams on sl and the internet gotta watch out for yourselves.

Survival of the Fittest…Let’s bring it back!
May 17th, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Well - here is the first real story.
I found a nice, real expensive 8192m2 parcel (L$160k) on the mainland and the seller wanted a holding deposit of $L10K. Actually it ended up at L$11,600.
When I returned to pay the balance and take ownership the land had been sold to someone else and they refuse my demands to return the deposit. There is no such agreement that they keep the deposit.
I have now just handed the matter over to my legal eagles and government agencies. My lawyer, who specialises in Internet laws, attempted to contact the perpetrators in-world, but was instantly muted. So he is now going to mute them and they will soon be lucky to find and ISP to connect to the Internet and take-down notices will be served. Their legal costs will be high, especially if they loose their defense.
LAUGHS
I did learn a “valuable” lesson though.
NEVER GIVE ANYONE MONEY UNTIL THE ITEM YOU ARE PURCHASING IS YOURS AND THE DEAL IS SIGNED BOTH ON AND OFF IN THE REAL WORLD. LINDENS LABS REFUSE TO PROTECT US FROM THESE CRIMINALS.
It is HIGHLY illegal to provide protection and shelter to criminals. So Lindens Lab will have to co-operate now won’t they.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:28 PM
@103 Anon although i wish you well in your endevours to retrieve your monies you can not blame LL over this. There is no way on earth they could manage person contracts between residents as in real life this is a time consuming and costly affair.
I hope you do get some justice because it is not a nice thing to happen but hopefully this will be a future warning to you and others,Do not give payment or details on promises,Yuor password is not needed to give funds and a deposit or funds on promised future transactions is not worth the paper it is not written on.
May 17th, 2008 at 10:13 PM
A strong password and scam protection are pointless when LL still provides a means for account hijacking built into the system. I won’t go into any details, but it’s a pretty glaring social engineering weakness.

Hi Folks,
DONT Gonna play the dumb blonde …. loool
My password is ************ (maybe a phrase of the bible) or anything else
Change my password EVERY week (using a little application generating random passwords).
I Don t add GROUPS blindly. I even don t accept gifts .. If i don t know the person who invites/sends me a gift … i disregard the invite/gift.
I am not greedy after free Lidens cose Free Lindens have always the scent of Mischief, Scam etc. As there are NO Philantropists in SL.
And most important I don t bragg about what i earn or have on my Linden Account.

Hello
there is a service on second life, who asks for our password it s’ acts of leex, the site to buy credit c’ is valid too?
May 18th, 2008 at 6:29 AM
To be givings out your password, you mustbe a special kind of stupidness. Turn brain on and never do it. Problem solved.
May 18th, 2008 at 8:45 AM
Would someone at linden labs pul-lezzz explain to everyone that when you use you password to access secondlife via services such as comverse, vollee and ajaxlife, that you are GIVING YOUR PASSWORD to a 3rd party.
Please also mention that whenever you use a viewer that is hacked, compiled and provided from an entity other than Linden Labs, you are potentially GIVING YOUR PASSWORD to a 3rd party.
“Hey, we got this cool feature for you, for FREE!!…. Just type your account name and password here, please.” … Sheeze.

i like to be a part of things like this cuz i feel so alive and happy. Please be my friend in this world or the next cuz I feel a huge fart coming on
May 18th, 2008 at 6:51 PM
Desdemona@110: Every time you run any third party software on your computer, no matter who it’s from, you’re potentially giving your password for SL, your credit card numbers, your bank account web password, and anything else valuable that you type into your computer to a third party through a key logger. There is no reason to believe that someone producing one of the standard open source viewers is any more likely to be stealing your password than someone producing any other tool that you might be more likely to use in conjunction with Second Life. Less so, because the open source viewers are, well, open source. It’s harder to hide a trapdoor when people can see your source code.
Keyloggers are not just a theoretical possibility, either, they’re routinely used by people involved in identity theft in real life. There are very effective ones available out there for very little money.
May 18th, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Unless you have enough software protection to counter it. Nobody runs naked these days on the internet without software protection. I do understand there are always the change of being hacked.
May 18th, 2008 at 11:06 PM
@111 You needs to be stopping with your babyish namecallings and get a life. I changing my name so it not look exactly like yours so if you have a copyright on the letters U and M, its ok, but if not kindly refrain from making yourself an ass by saying stupid things.
