[UPDATE] New Release Candidate Viewer: 1.20 RC1 Available
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008 at 2:01 PM by: Bridie Linden[UPDATE 2008-04-15, 5:16 pm PDT] Linux viewer crashes fixed!: We’ve fixed the issues that were causing the Linux 1.20 RC1 viewer to crash. Please download the new Linux viewer here. Thanks for your patience!
[UPDATE 2008-04-16, 1:02 pm PDT] Korean, Japanese and German viewer crashes: We have investigated a problem that causes this Release Candidate (1.20 RC1) to crash on startup for foreign languages; this will be fixed in the next Release Candidate (1.20 RC2). To revert to the English version of 1.20 RC1, you can delete the malformed file in the language folder .\ko, \ja, or .\de as appropriate:
..\skins\xui\de\panel_speaker_controls.xml
..\skins\xui\ja\panel_speaker_controls.xml
..\skins\xui\ko\panel_speaker_controls.xml
[UPDATE 2008-04-15, 3:47 pm PDT] Linux viewer crashes: We’re investigating a problem that causes the Linux 1.20 RC1 to crash on startup. Linux users are encouraged not to upgrade at this time. In order to prevent the viewer from forcing you to download an update, open gridargs.dat in a text editor and edit the text that reads:
secondlife --channel "Second Life Release Candidate"
so that it reads:
secondlife --channel "skipRC1"
We’ll post an update here when a more suitable Linux release candidate exists.
A new 1.20 Release Candidate Viewer is now available with some important fixes and changes.
If you’re interested in helping us test these optional viewers, please visit the test software page to download the Second Life 1.20 (RC1) Release Candidate viewer. Source code will be available for download soon.
Changes:
- Reminder that the Tools menu now displays in the main menu when editing/creating objects. Click on the Build button or right click and select Create. Existing short cuts (CTL + 1, 2, 3) all still work and will also activate the Tools menu.
- Disabled Avatar Imposters to address suspected cause of increased crashes on nVidia cards
- Allowed disabling of Joystick devices globally and selectively for avatar/build/flycam
- Backed out changes to put the Friends dropdown back on the world map (VWR-6243).
Fixes:
- VWR-6259: SLURL and secondlife:// links open a second SL viewer
- VWR-6392: Voice Chat Setup doesn’t work in Preferences dialog box.
- VWR-5929: Some UI translation texts are ignored because of missing names in XUI files
- VWR-6386, VWR- 6384, VWR-6385: Clean up duplicate and malformed sibling names in en-us xml
- Primary clicks toggle flycam with Mighty Mouse
- Logging In screen’s Quit button does not exit
- crash on LLUIImageList::onUIImageLoaded
- crash on LLViewerJointMesh::updateFaceData
- Person to Person voice calls UI, volume slider overlaps end call button
- Window opens large, then small, then large on startup
- (potential fix) Runtime Library error after quitting SL
- Restored some missing textures
Open Source changes:
- Added 3DConnexion library export
- Updated llkdu.dll for 1.20 OSS export
Thanks for your feedback and please continue to report any new issues in the Issue Tracker. Be sure to set “Affects Version/s” to “1.20 Release Candidate“. Resident participation is always welcome at our weekly (Wednesdays @ 3pm PST time) inworld bug triages, too!

yayyyy im 1dt
April 15th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
It’s awesome to see all these changes

Thank you
April 15th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Awesome! *nuzzles Bridie* Love how its comming along although if replaced my textures w/ ‘Retro Dazzle’ just basically a darker version of the buttons but still great
April 15th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Wooohooo you put the textures back … I can hardly wait to get home, load the new RC and put on a skirt again lol.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Avatar impostors have been nixed? Really? Is this a permanent thing?
They *really* helped so much with framerate, honestly…
April 15th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Thank you for putting the friends list back on the map.
I’ll send a box of bagels to LL headquarters when Andrew (?) fixes the target omega rotating objects not working bug.
The new viewers, at least for me, crash much less over all than earlier (pre 1.20) viewers.

April 15th, 2008 at 2:14 PM
i would like to know why with these RC viewers the voice chat is suddenly broke. it was working the other day now it jsut stopped working and in the prefences tab it says “voice chat is not avaiable”
April 15th, 2008 at 2:17 PM
This concerns me, Trying to pump out another release so soon after the last fiasco really disturbs me. I think you need tog o with the original plan to stabalize the grid. First priority is to stabalize. stabalize. stabalize!
April 15th, 2008 at 2:17 PM
I would love to test the new changes… unfortunately the new viewer crashes immediately, without even displaying the login screen
April 15th, 2008 at 2:19 PM
Can’t even start it under Linux?
Anyone got this also?
April 15th, 2008 at 2:20 PM
sorry @9… i forgot to mention… I am running Linux as well
April 15th, 2008 at 2:22 PM
I wish this one would be fixed soon, it is very annoying to login to last location that was above 768m and end up falling through the sky for 1000’s of meters!

skirts are working again !?
April 15th, 2008 at 2:24 PM
“Reminder that the Tools menu now displays in the main menu when editing/creating objects.”
So this was by design then, not a bug? Interesting, there was nothing about it in the previous notes.
Still kinda freaks me out, I’m used to having all menus readily available. I can deal with that though, but maybe we can see an option, “Show only when building” to toggle it on and off?
I’m also wondering if VWR-6265 is fixed yet? That’s another reason I didn’t use the previous RC much.
Anyway, downloading now and testing in a moment.
@ 5: Seems it’s only until they figure out about the increased crashes. But for the record I’m on a GeForce Go5200 FX and I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:25 PM
If you think i am using that as my main viewer then u gotta another thing commin’
it looks horrible and it makes it harder to see darker areas
April 15th, 2008 at 2:29 PM
The RELEASE button is still there. Please remove i. pls
April 15th, 2008 at 2:29 PM
I’m crashing at 1 second after login, consistently. Looking for updated drivers now (nVidia 7xxx series). But things don’t look good.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:31 PM
Cool!
Not only I have the exact same problems with this version as before, not now I also having them on the regular one…!
FUN!
*throws confetti*
Am I the only one that get the message telling you you can’t login to where you wanted and that you should loging straight home… But it is Home exactly when I’m trying to login to? Am I the only one that gets the irony of this?
April 15th, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Ok nice but I thought you said the ||TargetOmega script would be fixed again in SL for all very soon… I was seeing Rotation script again on 1.19 RC and now on 1.20 RC no more…
April 15th, 2008 at 2:34 PM
Yeah, the Linux version isn’t working at all. Error’s out immediately. First 1.2 release worked fine, and excellent.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:35 PM
I don’t think the avatar imposters is doing it, I think it’s bump mapping and shiny. I have imposters off, always, but when I toggle bump mapping and shiny I crash a LOT more than without it. It’s evil. Maybe fixed? Downloading the viewer now
April 15th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Ok, I updated to the latest nVidia drivers (169.21), and now I get “Error: Second Life is unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsupported. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers installed.” etc. Now what?
April 15th, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Ok, now we just need to have our login height raised to 4096m, instead of 768m
Otherwise, thankee kindly for the update, and for the friends list back on the world map!
April 15th, 2008 at 2:49 PM
When building with the Release Candidate and moving the camera around, the blue/yellow lines around the object waver and move. With a lot of camera movements, this makes me feel physically ill. Can you please fix it?
April 15th, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Yah linux build totally borked, dies with “free(): invalid pointer” in well under a second. The good news? can’t get much worse.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:52 PM
@14
Look for a fix for VWR-6265 in the next RC — sorry it didn’t make it in this one!
April 15th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Linux client is completely borked - crashes at earliest stage of loading
April 15th, 2008 at 3:00 PM
@22 try going to the web site ::::

Hope this helps some folks out there :_)

We’re looking into the Linux viewer issues — stay tuned!
April 15th, 2008 at 3:01 PM
Crash on Linux here too (64 bit Gentoo Linux, crash with one of those glibc detected free invalid pointer errors you usually only see in programs with really awful programming practices). Don’t you even run these things once before you ship them?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:01 PM
The ‘flycam’ bug with the mighty mouse is not fixed at all… Right click makes me jump, left click turns flycam on…
April 15th, 2008 at 3:02 PM
fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…
April 15th, 2008 at 3:02 PM
The avatar imposters was a great idea. I hope it comes back. To me it seemed to really cut down on lag.
So far on my end, other than buying a set of boots and only finding an empty folder. I am not sure if I was sent an empty folder or if things were lost in transit, things are working fine for me. It was only a 250l purchase so no tears shed here. I think in the long run things are improving.

April 15th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
/me *throws confetti* YAY! Love seeing you guys at work and pumping out new RC’s
btw… awesome work with the stitch option for sculpties, been saving me a bundle of time with my bleeding edge copy pasting
(No sarcasm intended this time :D, ok… maybe a little up on the last line, but heh… have a laugh why are we all here anyway?

Linux client isn’t working here too; i even don’t get a login screen; no screen at all.
WHAT are you doing the last weeks/months ??
IS there NOBODY who has tested this linux version ?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Bravo! Thanks for putting the map option back in!

Yep, I can confirm with the above statement regarding the linux client being borked,

Oh… can’t login!!! The Sky is falling! Your Mac version won’t work! Your “ix” version won’t run! please hire every available tech in the globe to develop for 3 systems at once!!!
Ah… just kidding… i forgot to enter the password there…
Had to rant a bit though :DDD GO LINDENS GO!
>:]
April 15th, 2008 at 3:09 PM
Does this crash any less than the new viewer? I found that the new DIV X is retarded and you have to get a patch for certain video cards..
HOWEVER…when I use the lag meter, the client is always the thing that is in the red. I wish I could use my second life again. This sucks.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Before this release candidate becomes an actual release, Dazzle NEEDS to be optional. Dazzle is not an “upgraded” interface. As residents have mentioned before, its high contrast is an annoyance (to many) and unhealthy for the eyes. Also, I don’t need Vista forced onto my great Mac experience.
I know many people have liked Dazzle thus far, but looking at comments given when Dazzle was first integrated with the RC, many more have expressed an ill interest in it. It should be optional, and should NOT be a default theme.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Houston… we have liftoff, very pleased so far, ty Mr Linden Gods for being so kind this tuesday evening…
New RC works great with Windoze, no crash so far, smooth, and i like the blingy blueish buttons.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:13 PM
VWR-6392: Voice Chat Setup doesn’t work in Preferences dialog box
Still not fixed, will not work, and the SLVoice.exe process doesn’t even run. Voice works with the regular client though.
Also, I get a weird texture flicker with FSAA enabled. Textures flicker to dark grey a frame or two.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:13 PM
Birdie —
Any word on whether or not the impostors removal is permanent?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:13 PM
No way to get that thing started!!!! - does it getting worse and worse with the stability with any release?
I surely could forget Mac Os support, do i ? Framerate sucks - crash every 5 min runninig… But now even worse at the windows side? Startup crash. No way to avoid it, Restart wont help, de- and reinstall wont help.
I think you have a major nVidia problem cause other ppl get this think running. Do you have any idea when or even if you ever would get this thing running stable on nVidea driven MacBook Pro’s.
I’m as desperate as I’ve never been before - if this will be the future? Baby-blue UI istead of a stable software?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
*cough*… spoke too soon, Mr Linden Gods, just had a crash and server failure uploading a texture, can i plz press #1?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
A reminder for those who aren’t fans of Dazzle:
Darker/classic skins can be downloaded here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Skinning_HowTo/Basics
April 15th, 2008 at 3:15 PM
@22
I suggest you check the nvidia website again because the latest drivers are 169.25. I myself am using 169.44 beta without problems.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Okay people, give the Lindens a break this time around. These are release canidates, thus are supposed to be used for testing purposes only. In this particular case we have no right to grief them over bugs, issues, ect. Constructive criticism is the name of the game here and ultimately it will be more effective at getting these issues handled.
Yeah, I’m not happy with the current state of SL. I’m sure nobody really is (especially you business owners), but these guys are allowed to experience their growing pains. We should sincerely be thankful that they are churning out the new features at breakneck speed, things that we as a whole ask for. I’m sorry, not many other FREE products feature release updates this quickly
In other words, stop complaining and do something about it. Instead of worthless whining, report bugs and make constructive criticism on the forums, during office hours, ect.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:17 PM
@29 - Birdie, though i like you guys TM ©® Logo on my desktop, why did it dump 3 shortcuts on my desktop?

Is this intentional?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:21 PM
grrrr…please let us have skin choices or bring back the classic skin. This silver is really distracting and the dark blue background….ick!
April 15th, 2008 at 3:22 PM
Actually, I think the point of the release candidates are for us to tell them about bugs and problems, isn’t it?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:23 PM
From a quick look the skirt issue is STILL not fixed. I’ve tried a dozen texture skirts, first one appears briefly then vanishes before the texture rezzes, any others i then try simply don’t appear. Prim skirts and all other clothing layers appear to be fine. Is this being worked on? i’m tired of wearing trousers or prim skirts all the time
April 15th, 2008 at 3:25 PM
Keeps crashing on me right after it completes Downloading Clothing and tries to change to the actual game.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:25 PM
@49 lol… MacOs? Nearly and very exactly 0 (zero) support by nVidia or Apple
April 15th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
automatic change to flycam?…strange behavior
unuseable….what kind of bug is it?
the look is …sorry,..UGLY
transparency of inactive windows is not strong enough
i like to resize windows..now its not possible…..bad
April 15th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
eek! this one’s broken
April 15th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
@50
“Okay people, give the Lindens a break this time around. These are release canidates, thus are supposed to be used for testing purposes only.”
How can we test it if the viewer does not start !!
April 15th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
@50 -
“Okay people, give the Lindens a break this time around. These are release canidates, thus are supposed to be used for testing purposes only.”
Actually, no, Release Candidate means just that: it’s a candidate for final release. It means it’s out of beta, and about to be deployed. Chances are we’ll see an RC2 and -maybe- an RC3 before it goes live.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:31 PM
Panning and zooming the camera consistently crashes the client. What did you guys DO?
April 15th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
after opening and closing any window it changes always in flycam….argh!!!
April 15th, 2008 at 3:33 PM
I have load the new 1.20 Rc from today.. Second_Life_1-20-0-84432_ReleaseCandidate
but I crash befor Login comes up, all time after 10 sec. I have Geforce 9600 GT and the new Nvidia driver 174.74 for Win Vista 64 bit.. idont know what i can do…
For a better SL Cleint 10 ave marias send
Reports of the Crash are autosend to SL ….

it´s ugly. please add darker colors. ty
April 15th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Great changes. Glad to see you guys are on top of the wonkiness.
I will download and keep testing it.
Thanks for the work you all are doing on it.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:36 PM
@Navin
Come on, a client that doesn’t even run for more than a few hundred milliseconds labelled as a “required upgrade” is not a release candidate.
Constructive Criticism:
* Use unit testing
* Use regression testing
* automate deployment process to only work when all tests pass
* run valgrind and fix all the errors (and report errors to third party libraries)
* feature freeze on all non-essential features like new UIs (three redesigns of the interface in the last 6 months or so??? but no time to fix bugs)
* test cluster with some boxes running SL automatically in gdb and sending the backtraces to the developers to fix all those “but how did I crash, I didn’t even touch my keyboard or mouse and the region was fully loaded already” bugs, then proceed to the same with same automated mouse testing too that just wildly moves the camera around
* run some static analysis tools (the more the better; they all find different problems) to discover problems like buffer overflows
* implement the few replacement classes needed to compile the viewer completely without closed-source libs, then open up (no two-tier system) the main development repository (read-access) to the public
* document as much code as possible in the source and on the wiki so a lot of people can help with patches instead of just bug-reports
* if SL has to crash at least make crashing less painful (why are two logins required to get back in, why is it possible to trigger the login rate limiter just by clicking on Login again once you get back to the login screen? Why is there no way to figure out when your account will be available again after you clicked okay in that dialog box?)
That should be enough for now and this is just what I could think of without any major breaks in typing. I am sure LL doesn’t even do one of these things
April 15th, 2008 at 3:41 PM
This one (Linux version) won’t run at all. The messages I get from a terminal run are way too long to post here.
Some things can be used for fertilizer. This isn’t even that good.
Adamas
April 15th, 2008 at 3:42 PM
light intensity changes by clicking on a prim, avatar moves while clicking
…flycam freaks out while changing application window….
dragging windows switch to flycam and shows orbit….
hey…
did you ever usesd this client at LL?? i guess no…..
April 15th, 2008 at 3:46 PM
@ the release canidate comments.
In theory, you all are correct, however when was the last time you saw a Second Life RC quickly declared stable?
Bottom line, the beta grid is probably not exposed to the user base of the main grid simply due to it not being live. There is no way that the Lindens can remove every bug simply from doing this. Because of that, release candidates are needed to test the viewer in a live environment, allowing a broader user base to test it. Bottom line, it’s not stable unless it’s declared STABLE. RC’s are still indeed testing releases.
Was Vista considered stable when it hit RC? No and it still lacks.
@66 I wish i saw more of that.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:47 PM
You fixed the skirt bug? ;-(
@5 hehe ya was great huh
April 15th, 2008 at 3:48 PM
Linux version would not even start for me either. I like Dazzle. I just bought a Sandio 3d mouse that does not work with SL. Would you please look into supporting this mouse? Thank you for your efforts in supporting the Linux platform. I will never buy another Microsoft product again. If you did not support Linux, I would not play. Thank you also for lowering land prices. They need to go much lower. Keep the greedy ones out of Second Life.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:48 PM
I can’t even load it. I’m running Linux and it crashes before it loads properly. I’ve submitted a bug report and anyway someone else has given the details above. This effectively keeps me out of SL, since you won’t allow me to use an earlier version.
When’s the next version going to be available? I hope it’s hours not days. And I hope someone at least tries to run it before it’s let out to the world.
April 15th, 2008 at 3:50 PM
Umm does anyone else have a problem with voice chat now being “not available”
April 15th, 2008 at 3:51 PM
VWR-6392: Voice Chat Setup doesn’t work in Preferences dialog box. o.O This was listed as a fix but Voice is greyed out so i cant even enable it
April 15th, 2008 at 3:53 PM
@72 You can download the standard viewer 19.1.4
April 15th, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Has anyone noticed that the “Log Chat” option does NOT stay checked once you relog? You have to edit pref’s and re-check it on each login…seems a minor thing but it’s quite an annoyance to have to reset this every time I sign in. Glad to see the map allows me to locate my friends again, but please, please let’s see some of the bugs fixed for good! How about incessant “low memory” errors whenever I’m at a high traffic area (and I’m on a XPS laptop with TONS of memory)…this happens to my friends as well, it’s not an isolated issue! Instead of tinkering with the color of the chat box, could we pleeeeeease see some much-needed repairs? Much ‘preciated!

MGHG NOT WORKING! FREE MGHG! OPRESSION NEVER, FREE MGHG NOW!
April 15th, 2008 at 4:02 PM
@66, Scott: We’re actually working on much of what you suggest, and have been for a while. For example, we’ve got a unit test framework on the server side that runs as part of every build. We don’t have that — yet — on the client side. Automated deployment based on automated testing can only work if you actually have reasonably complete automated testing. We’re working on building that, but it wasn’t part of the original design, and adding it to an existing code base — especially one the size of SL — is Certifiably Hard. We’re working on it, but it will take months or years.
Valgrind and related tools do get run, and we’ve been pushing to incorporate such things into our build process. But again, it takes a while to get there. We’ve done major work in the last month on crash reporting and we’re now getting much better data, and we have a big team working to address known crashes.
So your suggestions are generally pretty good — and fortunately, we’ve been working on most of them for many months now. Hopefully you’ve seen the results the Havok4 project brought for sim stability. We’re taking a similar approach in other areas, and we hope that these efforts will bear visible fruit soon. We’re not there yet, but we ARE trying to get there.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:03 PM
@79: The same thing happened to me when I tried to download…it became a first-person-shooter as I tried to click the “RUN” button before the window vanished into oblivion (about five seconds after clicking download)! Luckily I’m quick on the trigger… >_<
April 15th, 2008 at 4:04 PM
@76 i agree
finaly , please dont waste your time in changing skin to kindergarden look,
just try to sort out OLD and OLDER bugs, that we may have a chance to
get sometimes a really stable client and maybe …the whole system stable….
…unfortunately, if i see these hasty actions like h4 and clients, i dont believe
April 15th, 2008 at 4:04 PM
@7 -ac14
See VWR-6286.
Running two copies of the RC client (which can sometimes also happen if you crash) disables voice and you have to use a debug option to re-enable it. It’s catching quite a few people out it seems.

@28 - Thanks!
But I think that even if that got me going, that wouldn’t address the root cause - that the latest RC crashes on the nVidia reference drivers (just trying to do the ‘civic duty’ thing
@49 - the latest nVidia driverset available for my primary graphics card (GeForce 7800 GS) is 169.21. Yours may vary based on your hardware, of course
@LL - I’ve had to revert to the ’standard’ client - no more RC for me - crashcrashcrashcrash just after login (please see the half dozen or so crashlogs autosent - hopefully you’ll be able to see what’s going on). Bottom line: This latest RC puts me dead in the water. It just doesn’t run.
For the record, I run a tri-monitor setup - a ProView 22″ widescreen as primary and an Acer 19″ as secondary on a GeForce 7800 GS, and a third monitor (another 19″ Acer) on a Radeon 7000 PCI.

Seconded on the Mighty Mouse bug still being there. For some reason it is showing up as a joystick in the Joystick Configuration window. “[x] Enable Joystick: Apple Optical USB Mouse”… it’s not a joystick.
Left click seems to enable that flycam thing and if I disable the mouse in the joystick config my cam just gets stuck where it was left and my AV moves around without it. Nasty!
I seem to randomly get a single frame of blackness occasionally, like a flicker. Anyone else getting that I wonder?

cant start it under windows xp crashes when opening
April 15th, 2008 at 4:17 PM
@ 66 I’m going to laugh the next time i hear a person say that the Lindens don’t listen. That was great! Thanks for the input.

The colorscheme is very very ugly. The old one with the darker colors looked much better

Please let me echo the sentiments of many who have been at meetings on RC and expressed here -
DO NOT IMPLIMENT DAZZLE WITH OUT A WAY TO EITHER SKIN THE CLIENT COMPLETELY, OR CHOSE BETWEEN DAZZLE AND THE STANDARD PRE-DAZZLE INTERFACE!!!
Also if you don’t mind, put the TOOLS menu back where it belongs. Who is it that thinks moving stuff around and taking it away and then putting it back is such a good idea. Me thinks they must be despirate for job security.
While Windlight and many “under the hood” changes have improved the client greatly, whoever thinks messing with the UI is a good idea - please, find something else to move around, like parking spaces at the LL campus, and leave the UI alone.

I actually like the windows xp lookalike colorscheme
But jow about spending more time on handling dmca’s and doing something abotu the theft , and less on release candidates?
April 15th, 2008 at 4:29 PM
@91 .. same thing with me with the same os and card.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:31 PM
Like others, I’m having a crash when starting up from Windows XP Pro, latest service packs and patches. Unlike others, I’m able to log in, then JUST as soon as I get a peek in-world, it crashes to desktop.
As to skin (obviously lower priority than the inability to run!), it would be nice if we didn’t have to overwrite existing files to change skins. Most skinnable programs have a way to simply load XML or CSS files into a directory and then have a UI functionality that allows the user to toggle the skin.
Cheers,
-M

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5921
Although there has been noticeable Improvements in some areas the following are STILL unresolved.
KNOWN ISSUES
* Serious memory leaks.
* Grid instability and poor performance
* Teleports fail quite regularly, especially under heavy load
* Sim performance varies wildly (NOT due to client content either)
* Low FPS
* Serious texture latency
* World maps are very slow loading
* Crashes and viewer hangs and freezes
* Ongoing friends list presence issues
* Group chat totally borked (Still an issue)
* Group Notices not getting to all members of a group
* Random animations starting out of nowhere (and no, not an attack)(Intermittent)
* Sailing off into void space after crossing a sim line
* Did we mention crashes? Why yes, yes we did.
* Major bugs not being corrected month after month, year after year (prime example: llTargetOmega)
**Bots and bot farms.***
* LL spending time on items no customers really want or care about.
*** LL totally ignoring customer voting results and @#$# well doing what they want anyway (prime example: voice… which was majorly voted AGAINST by LL customers).***
* Absurdist pricing on sims and land (namely: $295 and $350 a month for a piece of virtual land is ridiculous. The only thing it does is stuff LL’s pockets with $$$ and keeps most people for being able to afford a sim).
* Total failure of LL to prevent minors from entering the grid, resulting in continual hassles with immature children (not that some of the “adults” are any more mature… it just adds to the problem and drama).*
… and the list goes on and on and on.
Why list these things? We’re not just griping. We’re listing these things to point out issues that Second Life customers deal with every single day… issues that Linden Lab continues to ignore (or put on the back burner, or “it bothers us too” into the obscurity pile) year after year.
And then people wonder why there are constant gripes on the blog.
That would be why.

i hate this version , that cam has a mind of it’s own in windows xp after logging on it’s not easy keeping the viewcam stable.

Voice is no longer an available on for me on this viewer. Enable is greyed out. Guess its back to the drawing board…

Fix for disabled voice

@96 - Yes, that’s my scenario as well (also XP Pro) - just a microsecond peek, then *bam* crash-to-desktop.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
#101, I wonder why this was set to true.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
How about making the GUI a bit darker theme? It just seems to bright now..
April 15th, 2008 at 4:50 PM
Honestly? I’d use this RC if it wasn’t so stunningly ugly. You’ve gone and made the client (badly) emulate the visual feel of an operating system that I’ve literally jumped platforms to avoid (The PCs in this household run either XP64 or Ubuntu now, and I specifically bought a laptop I knew would support XP). Blue? In a chat window? People, console windows stopped using blue backgrounds ages ago because they’re *painful* to look at for most people over extended periods. A brilliant glaring UI is just fantastically bad in most applications to begin with, and the whole thing just looks like something Mattel slapped together in a Microsoft-themed toy.
The only way I will ever use this is honestly, if you release a *classic* UI. And I don’t just mean color packs.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:53 PM
OK …question….. on the previous viewer to THIS RC has anyone noticed the screen flicker to black …say once very two minutes but for a fraction of a second? I stopped using 1.20 cos of this reason…. its darn annoying. BTW running an ATI X1950Pro 512Mb with CAT 7.10 drivers (dont trust the CAT 8.X) into a 1280×1024 LCD running at 60Hz. AA and AF off. (XP Pro, 1Gb memory, P4 2.

Crashing, it cannot start either Microsoft Windows Candidate. It was troubled.

“Your currently active group is displayed in bo”?
Small typo there, and still overbright, but seems to function quite well so far…

Best to make UI editor for SL viewer before you make them official.
Cause people are going to complain, non-stop, about it.
I know I would too… and still trying to edit the bloody XML files.

I never saw so many problems at the same time… and this is meant to be a release candidate?

Please return the tools menu to always visible, there are several options that we want to select before building. It is annoying to have to select something and then be able to “select only my objects” or other options. It is also confusing to have the menu appear and disappear, shifting the other menus over. There is no good reason to do this, it is a Department of Deck Chairs on the Titanic move.

Four words: Get. Rid. Of. Dazzle.
April 15th, 2008 at 5:13 PM
Fabulous, a required update to the test viewer that is also unusable on Linux. I was running version 84432 just fine. Now I’m no longer allowed to run that, since this much better and newer and totally worthless version is available. I tried the flag suggested (secondlife –channel “skipRC1″
and it does nothing. I am still immediately booted from the game. If the Lindens know this viewer will not work on Linux, why have they banned the working viewer? I’m forced to go back to the released version now (1.19.1.4) and suffer through all the crashes that had been fixed in 84432? I totally don’t get that. It seems to be the result of insufficient testing and of having a bunch of policies that don’t meet in the middle (a required crashy viewer and a disallowed working viewer?!?). I really like Second Life but this constant churn of troubles and crashes is really disheartening.

I’m not sure why this critical bug hasn’t been resolved with 3 builds released after it has been reported (and assigned)?

Heres a couple of votes for Dazzle from 2 Mac users. It’s a refreshing change.
Freezing and crashing has been much improved since finally assimilating Pastrami’s advice - start with the graphics preference slider hard over on the left. Hit the custom button and raise parameters one at a time, keeping an eye on the frame rate and watching out for imminent crashes. When you identify the culprit that freezes your machine, turn it down or off. It’s made a huge difference.
Now would someone please explain what “support for non powers of two textures” means.
And would someone also explain how to take 640×480 snapshot which will display at the proper aspect ratio when displayed on a 4×3 prim even though it’s a 512×512 texture. We used to be able to do this with previous clients, but we can’t with 1.19.1 and 1.20.
I don’t care what shape you force textures to be, but please respect aspect ratio - when a texture gets dropped into a container in the user interface (profile, about land, group logo) allow the user to pan and zoom the texture in the space rather than squashing it and making it look ridiculous. See Mac OS iChat buddy icon definition method.
