Video Tip of the Week #29: Using the Second Life Wiki

Today’s tip includes the wiki basics, which is LWA (Loaded With Awesome) if you’ve never used/heard of the wiki before. Be brave, Torley’s here to help! I also go through some practical stuff off the beaten path, like an accessible list of Linden Lab employees you can meet inworld, and did you know you can embed videos in the wiki too?

This is awesome.
I remember another tutorial you did about 6 months… hell, maybe a year ago where you mentioned this in passing. And it stuck in my head and I’ve tried to remember going intheir to create my own page LOL.
I did go in and look and it’s really not that difficult.
There are so many people like yourself who have a lot of experience in SL and really want to be as helpful as they can. THANK YOU Torley for this really timely tutorial.
And this is one of the rare times I’ll really use it to it’s fullest!

the video one is well but me j’ai need to know or to find in the wiki or on the blog or to find the version preceding of second life 1.19(5) in efet on Vista it does not go bad subject desoler but English c’est I does not include/understand translation Babel fish

thank you very much from your assistance second life goes better but with regard to the vesrion 1.19(4) in from of efet on chart ATI radeon Xpress the 1100 version does not go or regler is needed the parameter really all the temp would have discusuion to speak about the problem bus since the change of sl it n’y has more the menu beug c’est directly on a site than nobody includes/understands finally thank you for l’aide

Off-topic (but about new viewer–cannot find comment box there now):
The new SL client has no *functional* improvements–and even steps backward. Three straight crashes in a row, beginning with the first start-up. Everything, esp. people, look terrible inside buildings.
Please stop working on eye candy and work on the real problems you seem unable to fix or maybe even care nothing about–stability, transactions, assets listings, etc. Believe it or not, that would make 90% of us happier than pretty water I get across as quickly as possible b/c it’s just water! Meanwhile, the people to whom I wish to speak look terrible now.
Why won’t minimized windows stay where I put them? Even Microsoft can get that right. This release is another 2 steps forward for LL while also taking 1.5 backwards at the same time. I’ll upgrade only when *forced* to do so. (Even better, just continue using Dazzle. It actually works.)
Does anyone at LL have a clue about people want out of SL? Seems not. Do you even read our comments? Apparently only those which fit your [broken] paradigm.
(And, I’m not using anything but superb computer equipment here. You cannot place blame there for your programmers’ mess of a viewer.)

Just an addition. There is also an unofficial Wiki at http://www.lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=HomePage, which is geared towards scripters only, and a lot more useful than the Linden Labs wiki.

Thank you VERY much for speaking more slowly and clearly, with reduced giggling. It made it so I had to rewatch your instructional videos several times before I got it all. They are INSTRUCTIONAL, so the viewers are of necessity trying to absorb what you are going over during the video. Please continue to do this in the future!

Thanks for the tutorials,I have been told that there is speech on them but being deaf I find them hard to follow,no doubt other deaf residents have the same problem.Is there anyone out there who knows if there is a way of changing speech from Torley’s tutorials into type. Many thanks

Calm, cool and collected, as usual. Was well put over and opens another door for me yet again. One day I am going to get lost going through all these new doors, but I don’t care. Secondlife is all about opening new doors and if there isn’t one, you can build a new one to go through. Thank you Torley. PS: Keep up the giggles, we love it.

I definitely agree with #13 Scot: Speaking in this pace and tempo is VERY appreciated and nothing is ‘rushed’ through. The jovial mood used at times is fine, but sooooo much information is passed through this goose that it really needs to be presented just like this latest Tutorial was.
haha, I see Torley is pointing out that the SCROLL wheel fails in the SEARCH/Google function. Been seeing that problem ever since the Google-Search page was added, and YES it needs to be fixed!
I also hope that they do get the FLASH support added in, but ALSO consider adding in Silverlight-embedded support as well because that is another up and coming format which videos on the Web will be using in the days ahead. Don’t forget Silverlight, ppl!

Great start to the weekend Linden Labs. Your great WELL OIL Machine you installed this past week is a P.O.S. Get your crap together. This is uncalled for. You are costing people thousands & thousands of DOLLARS $$$$ that you seem not to care to compensate people for their losses because of your FAULTY SOFTWARE.
Your service has been a joke this past week. We the people of Second Life deserve better treatments then this!!!!!

@19 I can understand , if one pays as much as you I would be just as upset and ******** as anyone else! Instead of posting these “HOW TO(S)” maybe doing a little better community gathing would be better. Nobody wants to see this when the game has been having so so many issues over the past few months. Oh its great we have the option. But really its doesnt make the users of second life and more pleasent………..

It’s an off topic post and why, because comments are closed on the blog where it matters.
SL is down following weeks of asset server problems and a forced download of 1.19 to all the poor laptop owners who now can’t ever get online again.
They are blaming other servers, the bare fact is the only people who changed servers are LL (tm, whatever)
When oh when will Lindens (tm, whatever) listen: Your users want a stable system. Stop upgrading ANYTHING until known bugs are fixed. And if you care to keep builders and designers in sl, you do NOT, I repeat, NOT release versions that change the appearance of all textures, and won’t let you save color on your palette.
LL (tm, whatever) get back to version 18.5 and stay there. What you did with the new servers and the new, forced updates is kill yourself, there you are, offline. Read the comments on your new release, and you will know why many won’t return, either.

Aww, you did this before I started editing [[Linkability Rules]] (funny how that page is suddenly cropping up a lot on this blog!).
By the way, you don’t really need to type underscores into the URL - you can just use spaces. The browser will translate the space into a %20, and the MediaWiki is smart enough to translate the %20 into an underscore.

I’m writing here because all posts about the network issues have closed comments.
What type of aggregation do you use? Be careful if you use OSPF on Juniper firewalls and BGP on Cisco devices and you use a sham-link inside a MPLS, there is a Cisco bug about route aging and DNA bit, rejected by Juniper devices.
We had this problem some months ago: a 2 mb link down caused the entire MPLS to stop routing after 1 hour…

Can you please take the forced downgrade back LL?
If I cannot use 1.18.5 any longer, then i might not be able to return to SL, not even to sell my useless land.
I cannot even logon anymore…”Login failed” is the message everytime
I so hope you will go public soon or IBM is going to buy you off the market. Because then all you incompetent people at LL will be thrown on the street!

I am simply wondering how long it will take LL to fix ||Target Omega and this H4 AV rising or sinking thing while floating. The latter sure makes it difficult for content creators who fly and build using the grid extents…

Of course I’m aware that it would be probaply be too expensive to hire someone like Patrick Stewart to voice the tutorials, but to me Torley’s gigglefests were quite a turnoff…

It tells you a lot about the feeling of general “user-peed-offed-ness” you, dear LL, are adding to *quite* a lot lately. The tools we build (”we”, the IT-guys, including you LL) aren’t for computerfreaks anymore, but for *normal* people who fell for the adverts that claim a computer is the thing to have for everyone. THESE are our customers now - and we better adapt *quickly*, for our own good.

Again another fine tutorial but I hate to say it because the powers that be seem intent on forcing off topic posts by leaving the relevant topics closed to comment innocent topics take the heat of very frustrated customers and users. The latest trick of shutting down information on the grid id useless and is not working. I hate to tell you that you have as many asset problems when there are 30,000 users on line. More incompetence hint take a look at the way Torley listens to users and model your actions after the example LISTEN TO YOUR USERS and quit guessing as to what will fix the fiasco you have created with sloppy coding.

Wooot! Well done, Torley - this is really *much* better! I mean it. One notices how you have to force yourself to slow down a little, but the whole tutorial is *much* better to understand now, I bet not just for non native English users like me.

Nonetheless, a PS (not to Torley since he’s not responsible, I assume):
If “wikiwiki” really means “fast”, then you *might* want to think about either choosing another name for yours (does “wackawacka” mean “slow” by any chance?), or get it on a faster server.
