@149 thanks for the help!

There may be a solution to the "what would be the best settings to make everyone happy in windlight"

What would be a nice option is to give estate owners the ability to set the default light settings that people will see on their own sim themselves: A shop owner might for example love to have people by default to see themselves with softer shadows on their sim and for people to be able to see the skin they buy from all sides in a soft light. A goth sim owner may want the light by default to be 'foggy' and somoene who has a tropical island may want the light to be bright and have heaviy sunsets and shadows. If people want to override a lands settings they should be able to do so the same way as they can do now, but why not give sim owners a choice of how they want the light to be by default on their own land themselves? That way people can choose in which sim they would like to be, and know the majority of users sees them as they want them to be seen!

You can vote for this option on JIRA:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3742

(voting on jira is simple, just login with your secondlife user name, read if you agreee with the idea and on the left down corner click on "Vote for it if you wish it to be fixed")

This conversation strikes me as proof that a lot of people need a Full Bright checkbox on their skin.
Speaking of bright, My glow+shiny(low) gem has never looked this awesome before!

@44 Edward: Calm down and think about which Lindens you're speaking to. The Lindens handling this viewer and this blog post aren't, and won't likely become, the Lindens who work on teleport bugs and similar server-side issues. If and when comments like this are removed as off-topic, that's why.

@116 Extremely: That would be quite useful if you could offer any screenshots of what you're certain looks worse. My laptop is incompatible with Windlight skies and waters, so its clouds clearly ARE worse here, but that's because they're a perpetual overcast gray.

@131 mimi: For now you can just share your .xml files at C:\Program Files\SecondLifeWindLight\app_settings\windlight. They'll start making the files into in-world sharable assets after they start implementing Windlight server-side.

"I’d hate to see the possibilties of Windlight neutered..." While I quite agree with the sentiment, I expect that the worst that could happen is the default setting ending up approximating pre-Windlight. But that could possibly be kinda sad too.

Would love to see this client but its not cooperating with me. I start it and it detects my display and crashes.

I have an Nvidea GeForce 7600 with 256M dedicated ram. AMD x2 processor, and 2G of Ram. Did try updating my video drivers.

1.18.6 Release Canidate works great. Windlight crashes.

I run Mac OS 10.4.11 on a 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo in a MacBook Pro laptop. The graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1600 with 256 MB of VRAM. Furthermore I connect wirelessly to the internet over an older Apple Airport.

I should have had all kinds of lag problems, but was astonished to have been able to do everything I wanted to without crashing or lagging or suffering low fps.I even streamed music while I walked around indoors and outside. I don't know why I had no problems, because I'm sure many others have had terrible problems.

I had to wear a face light to feel I had a reasonable decent face appearance. The face light worked really fine as always.My eyes seemed to be overly shiny without the face light...in fact I felt that my eyes seemed to glow in a darkened room like an animal's eyes.

Many things looked worse than they once did, and most things looks about the same visual quality. The biggest differences were water and sky, which is really not much improvement in place of performance hits for so many residents.

So far I'm loving WL!!! :)

A bit harsh lighting when set to Daylight, but otherwise ok. Textures seem to load a bit faster, same with stuff rezzing.

@131 ---

Actually, settings, as far as I know, can be given out, and I hear that this may be facilitated better in later versions.

Right now we *do* have the option to adjust things 'to your own liking'; I'm mostly concerned about losing the ability to have what we do have now with the new lighting.

Honestly, as far as avs looking like 'the michelin man', in the long run, sculpties should take care of this. IT's all part of advancement, and I guess in the time I've seen this, the years I've been watching SL development, while there may be 'growing pains' I tihnk we need to get over the "graphics like 1998" hurdle once and for all.

It's not to say that we'll never have better trees, better avatar meshes, or better ways of blending prims or implemented sculpted shapes without seams.

But if we don't move forward in one area (lighting), moving forward in others isn't going to mean much either - they may even be held back.

I've seen this new lighting model "almost make it" several times already. As Torley said, it will take some getting used to and we'll have to adapt some things.

But I don't think SL should stay 'old' just for the sake of there not being change.

And I'd hate to see the possibilties of Windlight neutered to the point of being nothing but shiny water and a new sky texture.
