[COMPLETED] Rolling Restart in Progress
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 at 11:38 AM by: Teeple Linden[7:05 PM on 11/28/07] Update: With the exception of about 20 regions still needing restart, the rolling restarts are completed.
[1:11 PM on 11/28/07] Update: We found an issue with some of the deployment code being administered to all regions in Second Life. At the present time, if your region is not available, it will be shortly after the Rolling Restart across Second Life is completed. If you are a private region owner, please refrain from restarting your region at this time. We will update you here when we have further information. Thank you for your patience.
As announced previously, we’re performing a rolling restart of the Second Life simulators to update the service to server code version 1.18.6. The changes are primarily internal, providing infrastructure for new viewer functionality changes coming up in the Second Life 1.18.6 viewer which should be available soon.
The rolling restart will require each region to be offline for 5 to 10 minutes while the update occurs. Unfortunately, this restart cannot be delayed by estate managers. The restart will happen in random order across the grid (in contrast to many previous restarts that have followed a North to South pattern).
We expect the restart to take approximately 4 hours.
Read on for more details…
Changes include these fixes:
- SVC-122: Simulators stay online even when the CAPS server is down
SVC-750: Avatar sitting on a prim no longer able to be manipulated with llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsOops - we actually rushed this fix out early - over a month ago! It was accidentally left on the checklist for this release, but it’s not a change with this version.
In addition, two confusing and almost unused options have been deprecated:
- Deny Payment Info on File
- Deny Payment Info Used
These are found in the ‘Estate’ tab of World > Region/Estate and the ‘Ban’ tab of World > About Land. This is in preparation for a change to the user interface around land access coming in 1.18.6 (which should make access restrictions much easier to use).
NOTE: When crossing between regions which are in different update status, a notification will pop up. This is a feature of “Het Grid” and will be used more fully in the future when different regions are running code with different behaviors.

November 28th, 2007 at 11:54 AM
FYI: The reason regions now restart in “random order” is because the restarts are done on a host-by-host basis rather than region-by-region order. This is done to limit the time where regions are running with “old code” on a machine, which makes tracking down the cause of crashes difficult. This was one of the issues noted during the last update.
Since regions can run on any host (within limits of machine class and other esoteric math), this means the order appears random in-world.

“In addition, two confusing and almost unused options have been deprecated:
* Deny Payment Info on File
* Deny Payment Info Used”
Umm just what is confusing about those options? I guess this is to roll out identity verification. I hope you’ve ironed out the massive flaws in it because payment info used is a much more secure form of identification than the process I went through in beta.
November 28th, 2007 at 11:58 AM
could this rolling restart cause some servers to not work with vendor and catalog systems?
mine have been erroring
November 28th, 2007 at 12:03 PM
Will this offer any help to last night and todays TP issues (nearly every other TP failed and would disconnect you - myself and friends were/are experiancing this) and the fact notecards and scripts arent saving to objects consistently - error saving - object out of range, when in fact I am standing on top of the object.

“SVC-750: Avatar sitting on a prim no longer able to be manipulated with llSetLinkPrimitiveParams”
I remember when this was ‘broken’ (or ‘fixed’ depending on your point of view) in October, it made a lot of furniture and other products unusable, but then they ‘unbroke’ (or ‘unfixed’) things so the furniture and stuff all worked again.
What is happening now on these? I’ve just read the jira and am as confused as I was from reading the blog — after the restart, will said furniture still work, or will it be broken again?
“This is in preparation for a change to the user interface around land access coming in 1.18.6 (which should make access restrictions much easier to use).”
Does this mean Identity Verification is back on the agenda? After the “it’s here” blog in late summer, it seemed to have gotten forgotten again…
Speaking of forgotten blog entries, how are things coming on “Estate Governance”? That one was announced in April, then nothing since.
Cheers!

Why do we get blog rplies like Number 6 ‘The Grid Live?
If it is not possible to stop them.. how do we do that? Is it only for a ’selected few’ ?
Looks great for free advertising

SVC-750: Avatar sitting on a prim no longer able to be manipulated with llSetLinkPrimitiveParams
So does this mean it will be possible to move or not???
its a little important since i am in the process of writing a script that uses this ability to set the sit correctly depending on avatar size.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:19 PM
Thanks for your hard work.
I guess the restart is what was responsible for all those SL viewer messages “Login Server never received the packet” messages I was getting a little bit ago and the error messages from your Squid caching server telling me that it couldn’t reach http://www.secondlife.com at the same time.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:21 PM
“SVC-750: Avatar sitting on a prim no longer able to be manipulated with llSetLinkPrimitiveParams”
So.. are you UNFIXING this? This is the most confusing set of layered negatives…
After the restart, will llSetLinkPrimitiveParams allow manipulation of a seated avatar? or not?

“SVC-750: Avatar sitting on a prim no longer able to be manipulated with llSetLinkPrimitiveParams”
I would like to know too, I have tons of products sold and selling built on this.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:40 PM
What is the 1.18.6 functionality you are referring to ?
November 28th, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Fixed meaning it will work as it used to again.
It’s annoying that it took so long to be fixed, though. It takes far too long to fix anything. What about the critical issue with coalescing boxes not retaining their price, for example ?
November 28th, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Re: SVC-750, I’ll get clarification ASAP, but it’s likely to be a few more minutes.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:55 PM
You are entering a region which is a running a different simulator version than your previous region.
You can obtain more information in the knowledge base.
what is this?
I was stuck on the same sim under water and got this. link to the knowledge base doesn’t work
November 28th, 2007 at 12:57 PM
“This is in preparation for a change to the user interface around land access coming in 1.18.6 (which should make access restrictions much easier to use).”
I’m not sure what this means. Is it possible to clarify at all at this point?
I’m not sure if you mean that you’re going to make it easier for folks to setup access lists (not sure if that’s a good thing), or you’re going to change the interface such that users better understand the *social implications* of setting up access lists (probably a great thing)?
Inquiring minds want to know

thanks LL for the heads up warning / anyone reading this / please just sit tight / wait and watch / things should be fine / eventually :_)

@5 your right, alot of things seem to be going out of exsistance, EG when was the last time we heard about Havok4/Mono/ to many projects for LL to handle if u ask me

“Fixed meaning it will work as it used to again.

———————————————
According to people in the know, (and posts in the Jira) this issue was already fixed on October 7 and released gridwide. So why is it being fixed again? Is it being “unfixed?” (returned to “will not be possible” status) Or was it “rebroken” and is it now being “refixed?” (returned to “will be possible” status)
November 28th, 2007 at 1:15 PM
Oh by the way I saw the thing on CBS news this morning about SL being therapeutic for people with Cerebral Palsy, this has been one of my dreams come true for alternative uses of VW environments like SL.
This aspect of Virtual Worlds seems to have been ignored until now.

Our home region, Barbados had its restart quite some time ago…….. but is still offline, even tho the sims surrounding it are all up. Is there a problem that is preventing it from coming back online? Is there a way to find out what is causing the delay?
November 28th, 2007 at 1:26 PM
@17: You’re way more optimistic than I am.
Feature lock time, Lindens. Fix your infrastructure (read networking problems) and other assorted bugs. Simulator and viewer code has all the appearance of being badly kludged code.
Don’t add another feature until you stabilize client and server operations. There are many who are sick of “We apologize for the inconvenience,” blog entries.
After 30 days of reasonable stability, then add *one* new feature. Do it right.
Do you really think corporations are interested in doing anything based on your busted tech? How do you expect the economy to operate> If you ever hope to sell SL in future — you better get the infrastructure and bugs ironed out.
November 28th, 2007 at 1:40 PM
Seems there are other problems. Nearly all of our vendors are still down, and we cant restart them.
November 28th, 2007 at 1:44 PM
Thank you very much for the 3 second warning - and the tiny article in the blog previously that was so easily missed - thank you very much for closing my sim in the middle of an important event for this week… no in-world warning so we could move… and how long does it take to restart? Offline now for 5 minutes…. Dixfield…
It’s this unprofessional conduct that disgusts me when you promote SL so often as a buisness platform…
November 28th, 2007 at 1:47 PM
christ, could you (you know who you are) please stop bitching about things not working to your satisfaction right now? the grid is intertwined, information is stored everywhere(not just the asset server(s), things won’t be right until _ALL_ (not just your) regions have been restarted.
report breakages and weirdness, if any, _after_ the RR is done.
there, someone had to say it, surprising one of the Lindens doesn’t chime in and tell the whiners to get stuffed.
November 28th, 2007 at 1:49 PM
Some more adequate warnings might have been appropriate here… I didn’t see any of the usual 5 minute warnings etc. not that they’re really in advance enough… and a blog post just over an hour in advance isn’t much use if you’re already *in* sl and not reading the blog…
November 28th, 2007 at 1:50 PM
Just got that one when entering another sim:

November 28th, 2007 at 1:54 PM
Regarding SVC-750, that shouldn’t have been in the release notes. It’s the same fix that was released previously. It’s new from 1.18.5 to 1.18.6, but not new to what’s on the grid. Teeple’s getting the description updated to reflect that.
To be clear: Nothing’s changing on llSetLinkPrimitiveParams in this release.
November 28th, 2007 at 1:57 PM
Christ, could you (you know who you are) please stop bitching on people who are not satisfied with the service they get? You don’t know how much they pay a month to for their stay on SL. So please show some respect for your fellow residents. Why shouldn’t they complain? They pay for SL! If you pay for something it does mean you are entitled for good service and if you don’t get what you expect you are entitled to complain. You don’t pay any of your fellow residents for your stay on sl so stop bitching to them because you are not entitled to that. Pay me and you can bitch at me as much as you want!
November 28th, 2007 at 2:04 PM
I have to say i am please with the new veiwers cause its what SL has been missing i am eager to see whats new on SL plates for the up comeing.. woot KEEP i rolling guys/gals your doing great..
November 28th, 2007 at 2:06 PM
@29 SO LEAVE. go to one of the other virtual worlds aval.. oh wait, none are out of alpha yet
i’m a paying member as well, so take a Midol, then bite me.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:07 PM
@25: Meh, for US$295/month, I’m gonna use a blog slot to bitch when my island goes down without warning and my guests/renters scattered to random (and almost always inappropriate) locales when they get back inworld.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:08 PM
So now we have to wait untill ALL of the restarts have been completed?
Discraceful way to run a business guys… one event having to be rescheduled. Thanks a lot.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:15 PM
Gotta love open source … gotta love rolling restarts … gotta love pedantic juvenile whining.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:18 PM
Inventory folders present — no contents !
Rez a prim , try to delete it and im told its in a different region ?
Ruthed to the eyeballs.
TP not working self-initiated.
TP notifications sent by friends not being recieved.
Just another manic wednesday in sl
Ah well , maybe it will settle down , maybe .
Was this server code tested at all and if so with which of the plethora of viewers currently available ??
ie — which one should we be logging in with to avoid all this ?
November 28th, 2007 at 2:19 PM
Christ, could you (you know who you are) stop being an apologist for Linden Lab for. like, forever?
I, for one, don’t like that my products being sold through my vendors is being delivered but the customer gets a refund even though the product was delivered. Or the fact I can’t shut all of them down to upgrade them because of LL’s infernal rolling restart that is causing several sims to not come back online.
I’ve spent most of my day trying to fix what’s been broken by Linden negligence.
This has been, by far, the worst two weeks I’ve ever spent on SL in my short life on it. If it isn’t broken objects and scripts, it’s entire parcels cleared of all objects, and ghosted prims so nothing will rez on it.
@30: If this is great, I’d hate to see what crappy is!
November 28th, 2007 at 2:19 PM
Why does the status page say offline, but the launch window says online?
LOL
Which is it guys?
November 28th, 2007 at 2:19 PM
“To be clear: Nothing’s changing on llSetLinkPrimitiveParams in this release.”

Thanks very much for the clarification on that!
November 28th, 2007 at 2:22 PM
softlinden, thanks for the clarification on SVC-750, I am sure that will set a lot of minds at ease.
Now if we could get some more info on that coming change for the land access UI… that would be swell!

How about this story on our local news about people getting RL jobs via SL?

I hope 1.18.6 will fix this linux-related error im having (llTransportmanager didnt close well). Allready made a post on jira about it. Still stuck with 1.18.3.5 for now. But gotta say: keep up the good work!(and please release the server-code asap
)
November 28th, 2007 at 2:34 PM
I have a problem ; since a few days i joined SL and now
system dont let me inworld ; i was tried to change my
passport and dont let me do it ! what happens? I like
the game, why dont enter in it? Help me.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:35 PM
Could some Linden tell us if age verifacation will be in 1.18.6? We would appreciate some advance notice.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:37 PM
@31 did you read my post?! It looks like you didn’t! Why would I leave as i can complain and get problems fixed that way? The person I was referring to is not LL and should tell their fellow residents to shut up! If she wants a virtual world where noone complains that person should stat it’s own virtual world where he or she dictates the rules! I couldn’t find any clause in the TOS stating that becoming a resident forbids you to complain.
And about other virtual worlds being not out of alpha? Im’ very sorry but SL didn’t leave alpha also yet and I guess you never heard of WoW. A virtual world with perfect service and a minimum of outages. The outages are even synchronised with the time zone you live in. Yeah I live their as well.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:38 PM
@36 It’d be helpful if you’d post which vendor system you’re using
Also is there any truth in the rumour that this 18.6 server code is actually to restrict logon to SL so it can *only* be done via a logon to the SL web page?
November 28th, 2007 at 2:40 PM
the sim dixfield has restart more then a hour ago and its still not back online
November 28th, 2007 at 2:41 PM
Good luck with the deployment.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:47 PM
Well, in case THIS rolling restart will help the Grid recovering from the previous one (which was meant to help recovering from the previous one) : NO reason to complain at all.
Hrmpfffffffffffff
November 28th, 2007 at 2:51 PM
Hope this fixes the land info database!!!!
November 28th, 2007 at 3:01 PM
I of coarse got the messege that my home sim was on a different simulator that the previous sim i was in, and though the picture is bright and details incredible,, my movement now is jerky and items slow to rez…im not a puter geek,, i dont know the terminology for these fixes…but i do know..i crash on tp 4 out of 5 times and I lag …lag…..zzzzzzzzzzzzz.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:01 PM
Nope - restart and FIXES “DID NOT” FIX the land info - so kewl…..
November 28th, 2007 at 3:03 PM
Good lets get it fixed.Seems like the question about it affecting venders has an answer of yes. I have been getting time outs after making a purchase.(of course it took the money before timing out). I am just glad that the big dollar Item was lost at skin within. The owner didnt even bat an eye when I told her about my loss. Replaced it that same day. (unlike naughty designs who over a month ago still hasnt responded back when I lost a purchase there.) Lets get it fixed.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:06 PM
Still waiting that my region come back online, 2 hours now that I wait.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:16 PM
*hands Tan260 some popcorn and waits for my island to come back up as well after 3 hours*
November 28th, 2007 at 3:20 PM
i’m having llEmail failures even with both server and vendor sims online, class 5 and totally froody. what up?
November 28th, 2007 at 3:29 PM
I was gone for almost 2 months but now I came back i tried to upgrade my account & guess what …..
Second Life Offline for Database Maintenance or Update …..
lmaooooo
November 28th, 2007 at 3:35 PM
vend prims not delivering? well… guess the asset system is affected by the sim update. hmmmm… hope you fix it or is this some new access feature that will prevent those pesky annoying customers from entering and getting use out of secondlife?
November 28th, 2007 at 3:43 PM
My Home position sometimes moves when my home region is down, permanently. One time it ended up in a private sim that I had no right to set my home in. This is an exploit as I can set my home to almost any sim now if I time things just right.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:48 PM
yeah, pesky customers !!!!
Who needs them - we all build stuff, buy or rent land, setup shops, pay tiers for FUN. Not to try to make a few Lindens or help the economy - it’s all done to get angry IM’s from people who buy the things we made. I guess we forgot to tell them - it’s just for fun not to buy.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:56 PM
Lol @ 60 Yes maybe we should just adapt to SL and not refund our customers and tell them we will restart our sims and they can try again to buy something.
My whole day till now has been nothing else than refunding and apologizing. Maybe I just should change my attitude towards my customers.
November 28th, 2007 at 3:57 PM
I guess it’s fun not to be able to get to your home location. I guess it’s fun to be Ruthed. I guess it’s fun to also have the gray goo. Would you people get off LL doing a good job. A good job would be providing a reliable platform that we paying customers can use. I’m for one not sad about downgrading in a few days. No more money to LL for me. Pay for this? BAH!
November 28th, 2007 at 4:00 PM
don’t worry…..even if your island comes back…it will be lagged to the point of being almost unusable… like mine
And yet… I LOVE SL…… Thank you Sir may I have another!!!
Ahhhhhh Hurts so good!
November 28th, 2007 at 4:14 PM
since 2 days:
all vendors do NOT work…messaging errors
payment inworld issues
time out..request
after rolling restart :
nothing solved
+ textures displayed not correct
whats happen?
November 28th, 2007 at 4:14 PM
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GRID RESTARTS Got to love them…. Glad my DirecTV don’t have grid restarts every 3 days!!!!!!
thank goodness Xbox Live dont have grid restarts.. Id be pissed off if my Halo game got crunked up due to a restart!!!!!!!

A note for the whiners.
Perhaps they should grab the source and contribute to the cause.
But I’ll bet they are those IT expert types - you know - all those “IT Experts” that sit at every desk in the office. But of course they do not have the skills and they would not know what computer science was even if it dropped on their heads from a great height while walking down the street.

Well so much you know I have a degree in Computer Science as well.
You would also know, with 30 years industry experience, that making your software worse on a daily basis would be cause to loose your company.
As the taking someone else code and contributing, are you for real? Why in the world would I want to contribute my time and not get paid for it? I mean, LL sure gets paid for the crap they put out.
Soap box off!
November 28th, 2007 at 4:41 PM
@66 so where can we get a copy of the server code? Oh yeah, that’s right! It is commercial software rather than open source and I pay LL for their support of it. Or maybe you are personally recruiting people for programming positions at ll?
BTW, anyone worth their salt in CS would list that first and dearly hope people do not notice they have an information technology/computer information systems degree too.
On another topic, from the original post:
“In addition, two confusing and almost unused options have been deprecated:
* Deny Payment Info on File
* Deny Payment Info Used”
Not confusing to me and, yes, I rely on controlling access by payment info on file.
Now back to SL with a half-ruthed character. Talk about looking strange having pink flexi hair but having brown hair shown too! Oh, fixed! While I was looking away the pink flexi disappeared.
November 28th, 2007 at 4:43 PM
Why bother, little functions in the game now, growing very tired of supporting this type of an effort, almost a joke now, Oh hint if you run the new windlight viewer better get a temperature monitor for your video card or you will be replacing it soon. Temperatures 10 degrees C above the base line set by the normal viewer, and that runs high also.
Just do not see any improvement from the past still have the rolling restarts to cure self inflicted injuries it never changes blind leading the blind, this is like talking to the deaf. Oh, Phor how long have you been in game? after 3 years it becomes a moot point also along with the massive cross linking of files this game accomplishes. After version 6.0 the game has continued to slide deeper into the Accretion disk. Seems to be long past the point of recovery The lindens know better than everyone how the system runs and chiming in to tell we who post complaints would not be self serving and admitting there is a problem. In addition they might never be taken seriously again.

November 28th, 2007 at 5:11 PM
Yes Linden, what the hell is happening?
This is getting stupid, totaly stupid.
Not one damn week without problems
November 28th, 2007 at 5:13 PM
@75. Penny, there was an update to the original post.
The restart is still in progress.

5 hours now and my sim is still down weehoooo! =/
November 28th, 2007 at 5:22 PM
My sim came back up eventually but inworld payments were not going through… and for those who find it entertaining to slate the “whiners and whingers” here - bear in mind that some of us are trying to operate a business in SL (which it is promoted as a platform for doing) and these constant repetative bugs, glitches and down times severely disrupt and actually cost business in SL real money…
November 28th, 2007 at 5:25 PM
Any news on this matter? No new post since 1pm.
We have 7 FairChang sims down since 12pm. What happened to the 5-10 min downtime?
November 28th, 2007 at 5:26 PM
Hello, will some1 please update us on what is going on. I just realized that premium membership mean basically nothing for support.
November 28th, 2007 at 5:28 PM
Well it has come to the point that if I have to start paying for this game from my pocket again I shall not It has taken a long time to create a successful business in Second Life and the developers seem bent on taking it down again. If it goes I go simple. Thats more than an island in revenue linden staff OH I forgot you do not care ……… Lose middle level players and you lose the war.

I agree with you totaly but Linden dont seem to care about that either. If they did they would have offerd some money back or something

@68 I’m using computers and software build by people with over 30 year experience. Well let me tell you that those people never released software so buggy as this software and charged for it.
You don’t seem to get in your IT brain that this is a paid service and LL does not promote SL as being just some beta software for people to test out. If you charge people for service you have to provide them service! This is not just about software where everyone knows of it always will contain bugs. It’s about a paid service wich lacks on service.
I always refund all my customers when SL messes up payments. I never seen sl refund any resident when they mess up.
So having 30 years of experience in IT won’t just do in this conversation. It’s not all about bits and bytes, but I do understand that’s the only part you see of SL.

Btw when will my sim stop restarting every 10 minutes?
November 28th, 2007 at 5:47 PM
Great point Leanne!!! I to as a business person, am thinking i should rethink my decision. I spend alot of money in SL. Promotions, Events, Classifieds, etc. and to see this keep happening regularly, I’m pulling my hair out. NO WORD FROM LL TOO!!!

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood???????
November 28th, 2007 at 5:51 PM
Lindens your extreamly long minutes are losing us money ..wud you burn a few dollar bills in the office every 5-10 mins till you get the grid back up ??
November 28th, 2007 at 5:55 PM
We’re taking bets on whether Woodbridge or Edloe will come back first. Both appear to be Borked by the upgrade.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:05 PM
I would be nice if the lindens tell us exactly what the changes in land access will be, like they promised.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:37 PM
Woodbridge came back. Edloe hasn’t.
Looks like I have to put on the tutu and sing “I’m a little teapot” at open mike again.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:37 PM
Maybe the Lindens should hold of on age verification until after Christmas, at least not make the grid any worse now.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:46 PM
hehehe…..check out the other newer thread regarding rolling restarts….”they” cut off the posts after 17 comments… THAT’s the thing that really toasts my muffins…. not “thank you for your patience” but “shut up, we don’t want to hear your whining” …. but….but…I whine SO well!!!! Wwwwwwaaaahhhhhh!!!!!
But you know what ?? I’d REALLY like to see some people on here spending some time reading a book or at least a dictionary….
it’s losing NOT loosing…
Extremely not Extreamly
Would not wud
Too not to……
Damn…too much time spent in SL… no wonder y’all geek when it’s vomiting on it’s toes
November 28th, 2007 at 7:01 PM
Here’s a shocker to @94. I don’t particularly care for all the whining that goes on when something goes wrong. It doesn’t get you anywhere
November 28th, 2007 at 7:09 PM
Well big surprise they closed the comments on the newest blog post haha yes they care folks but this one really got to me from the latest post and I quote here for your enjoyment.

You know - I get real tired of hearing you people complain! This is new people - if you want to play on the cutting edge you might get cut.
If you don’t like it - you know where the door is!!!!
Use it!
Lindens - I think this is a wonderful world - I understand there will be some issues and I know you work hard to keep things moving along.
Keep up the great work and thanks.”
Dear Steven this game is 8 years old give or take a few days nothing new about this condition. It is far from bleeding edge although it bleeds a lot. I might suggest that after you age a bit in game ypu come back to us and tell the prisoners how you feel.
And, my apology’s for taking 3 of the rare reply areas here I normally do not but keep running into these neophyte comments that just make me see more red than normal. Oh excuse me he said cutting edge, the only thing cut here is the funds from our purses and wallets as they always make sure to get their cut no matter what to the point that they froze a friends account who was in the hospital and he was no spring chicken here either paying for multiple islands for several years with faith and very good intent. While several commercial accounts that I have knowledge run consistently 2 months behind on tier payments. Might makes right , oh and also controls the purse strings of greed
November 28th, 2007 at 7:58 PM
I agree with #96
When i was a newbie I didn’t understand why people were whining so much until I bought land and started a business on sl. People that say “you shouldn’t whine so much” clearly have no business on sl. All the whining on here is a repercussion of al the “whining” sl business owners go thru every-time when sl gets messed up. It’s clear that all those who think we should give the lindens a break never have to go thru 50 angry IM’s of customers before they can start measuring the damage SL has done to their business.
Even Microsoft got XP stable after 8 years!!!!!!
November 28th, 2007 at 8:05 PM
lands stats still borked on Dreamscape Bay since your hot swap of the database the other night - can you maybe hot swap it again????
November 28th, 2007 at 8:08 PM
Plus this from your newest (CLOSED COMMENT) blog post
[UPDATE 7:09 PM PST] Good news! The rolling restarts are completed, with the exception of 20 regions still underway.
How can it be completed if 20 regions are still underway?????
November 28th, 2007 at 10:37 PM
Cutting edge?
You can visit Active worlds and see builds that were made over 10 years ago. And they look nearly as good as anything in SL.
There are 3 MMOs that routinely host over 1 million users online at once. And can offer compelling enough content to induce millions to pay a monthly fee.
Perhaps we should ignore the complete lack of load balancing across the grid.
Perhaps we should ignore a system so broken that every walk across a sim border is major risk.
All it will take is for a real company to think there is money to be made in this niche.
12 million Xbox 360s
6 million Playstation 3s
13 million Nintendo Wiis
All one software update away from having a virtual world of their own.
Linden Labs needs to start taking it’s business very seriously.

U M Says: That is correct my computer heat levels have become higher. Wind Light really has been stressing my computer. isit about time they we have a lighter more effective UI?
They have 2 actually, the standard viewer and the RC.
Your computer must have problems, my 2.2 dual core runs windlight without cooking in 30 degree heat.
November 28th, 2007 at 11:13 PM

Hi there,
i am pretty amazed that LL keeps total silence over the tremendous vendor issues over the past 2 days. It didn´t just start with the rolling restart as it usually does. It started long b4 that, together with unintended double payments, when customers pressed “pay” once and money got deducted twice.
You really dare not issue some sort of inworld warning / notification what so ever. Sure after such a warning that evening is most likely to end with no profits. But at least I wouldn´t lose customers on the long run, who think its my place or my vendors not functioning, while it´s your platform.
And if you´re trying to avoid panic, then at least make this blue message appear in the upper right, whenever there is a new blog! Just say “NEWS ON THE BLOG”, so the new kids on the block know they have something to check. And while you´re at it, would you have the kindness to reserve some server resource that is totally independent from the resources your webpage uses? Whenever things start to go wrong, a lot of people have already learned to watch the blog. However your webpage is often temporary not available throughout trouble times. So no chance to actually figure out, whats wrong.
I can only second and third what a number of people saying here. This is a pay service. Just looking at that without putting it into any other context, makes me say secondlive is the worst service i have ever paid for in my whole life and i´ve seen communism irl!
You´re promoting this as a business platform! But your own business conduct is like the muppet show, just not as funny.
You´re eco stats are sexed up by numerous bugs and the resulting refunds.
And to all of you bitching at the “whiners”. Our complaints won´t achieve anything with LL. After being with sl for 6 months, i am pretty certain of that. Right.
You can easily lock up an IT mind(ed bunch of people) and will never get their attention again. That´s a common theme in a lot of companies and if the company happens to be an IT one, then people trying to do business with them or through them go mental. That seems to have happened to LL long b4 i joined sl.
BUT
There are businesses out there in the real world considering sl as a new marketing tool. May be even relevant ones in size or market cap, and I don´t give up hope, few of them read into these comments here and conclude a “no go” from that. Anyone with a bit of a business brain can read themes and also the corporate mentality out of these blogs & comments. And that is what it´s good for, so I won´t stop bitching! Inworld, inblogs, in real life!
I am pro refund schemes for tier & classifieds to start with. One for revenues on top and then we can talk about bleeding edge again.
Good Luck fixing the fixes that have been fixed months ago…

Our records indicate that you have items listed at the SL Exchange Marketplace, but none of them are available for purchase because your server object(s), listed below, have lost connectivity with the SL Exchange main server.
You could be losing sales! Follow the instructions below to reactivate your items on the website:

Hello is anyone home at the Lab
Teleports are still borked
congratulations on another fine update
one would think that that someone would keep a note book on this type of problem so it is not repeated
guess not
oh well
yes I know dust in the wind………..
November 29th, 2007 at 5:50 AM
@100 …. to be fair …. those other MMO’s are closed systems which do not allow you to create ANYTHING that you want.
Even Active Worlds has some limitations to what you can create which is why I still bet on the SLG platform.
And with regards to XP getting stable after 8 years….. true… BUT …. SL is more like going from 3.11 to 95 to 2000 to ME to XP …… all in 8 years with a MUCH smaller programming team…..
Too bad now it’s turning more into Vista
