Crashes and Today’s Release Candidate
Friday, October 19th, 2007 at 4:58 PM by: Stephany LindenWe’ve been reading your blog comments and receiving your in-world messages and crash reports throughout the day. We know that some of you are experiencing crashes upon starting today’s 1.18.4 Release Candidate, and apologize to those of you who have been on the receiving end of this (I’m one of them!).
We believe some empty URIs may be the culprit, but we are still working to isolate some variables right now.
Please help us to better isolate and correct these crashes by sharing the following information with us:
- Your operating system (Mac, PC, etc.)
- Your network configuration (at work or at home, behind a firewall or not, wireless or not)
- The name of your Internet service provider (ISP)
- The type of router you have
Please provide this information, ideally, as a bug report in the PJIRA I’ve created to track these crashes (VWR-2813) or as a comment to this post (but remember, comments are capped at 100, and I’d really like to ensure we get as many reports as possible).
Thank you for your participation and your patience today.

I am on a DMZ (no firewall) DSL through AT&T direct connect with allowing “SLVoice” to run. (Never had to do that befor)
It also h”hanged” when clearing the cache. IT IS PURE EVIL AND WILL ADD OVER AN HOUR OF TRYING TO REVERT BACK IF YOU LIKE THAT!!!!
Oh, Windows XP.
October 19th, 2007 at 5:11 PM
I am through cable interent PLUS running wireless. I’ve notice complete sluggish behavior prior to full system down. Tends to also be related to crossing sims.

The release candidate seems ok as did all versions previously (to normal degree). I think I skipped one release candidate right before the new one’s release so that one may not have worked
I CAN NOT LOG IN TO THE CURRENT CLIENT (I can log in, and appear in world, revieve data to light up green dots on my minimap… ) but my bandwidth completely chokes off before I can do anything at all.

oh, I was also using wireless, but for my connection that is not an issue. I should of known there was an issue when the client was 6 megs smaller than they official release. This one is pure evil and will damage everything about you. Forgive the previous spelling. I was too upset.

Seriously, I will NEVER trust a Release Canedate EVER AGAIN posted on the blog after this. This was my first time and the damage caused by it is almost unforgivable. Did you even test this?

October 19th, 2007 at 5:31 PM
I always clear the cache manually by deleting the cache directory - SL seems to be particularly slow about just deleting a bunch of files.
Clearing the cache got rid of my RC crash problems, but I don’t do anything in SL that involved URIs that I’m aware of (no streaming, no web pages in people’s profiles, …).

SL Release candidate froze with the lag warning of too many complex objects. Windows saw SL as not responding. I gave it 5-7 minutes and it didn’t come back so I axed SL and restarted wiindoze. I’m back on at the old version
October 19th, 2007 at 5:39 PM
lol… well its not really funny but it is in a way. i have no clue how you guys managed to pull off this bug…
i teleported and my camera view stayed in the sim i was in while my avatar went to the new sim really really fast. until i pressed escape at which time my cam instantly went to the new sim.
October 19th, 2007 at 5:39 PM
I usually don’t post to these blogs…but honestly I can’t say I have seen
any issues, if anything it’s running smoother so far.
Sometimes I feel like SL bashing too, but Im also willing to give you
guys credit when its due. Way to go! (This time)

…sorry one more thing…everytime i open this blog or internet explorer.. i get a crash and a ‘blurb’ box that says that a ‘mangled stream has been detected and that to remidy the situation i should reinstall sl… anyone else run into this ..? thx
October 19th, 2007 at 5:41 PM
From looking at this blog, it seems that ONLY XP users are experiencing issues. Are there any Vista users having problems? I know XP and Vista have a different coding core base and I suspect that is the issue.
Oh, I am on XP with SP2
October 19th, 2007 at 5:50 PM
Seriously, you messed up bad. This one should of never seen the light of day due to the issues. I had to even clear my registry to try and fix the problems caused by this. It has caused an over-all performance drop with my PC.

Good luck….and thanks for all your efforts!

14 crashes within an hour…. (XP - laptop, 2 GB, new equipment, router ADSL, 6 MB connection)
I think alomst the premium account amounts are not worth to be paid anymore…
A decent web service like my own provider has (99.999% uptime !) should be the goal of you, Lindens!
I pay for a service, so it should be kept UP!
All those ‘ improvements’ …. they are simply adding new bugged features…. at least that’s how i feel it…. and using SL to do my business is getting more awkward by the day… is that where i pay for? (including 19& VAT??????)
….. i just hope yopu take your business as serious as i take mine, or i will be gone, and with me maybe half of your premiums…

The problem is that for the first time in a whole year, I crashed about 15 or more times in 2 hours, not doing anything special (chatting, a couple of times emptying trash, or just standing still), but this has happened too on the 1.18.3.5 official viewer and even with the 1.18.2 (1), which I tried also when I was getting desperate…

For the last two releases, and the current standard client, I crash a good bit of the time just turning my avatar or moving the camera position. And sometiees just standing in one spot. Starting yesterday I was also experiencing ‘hangs’ on the client with varying times as to how long it lasted.
I have run full system diagnostics and everything is fine. Tweaked and adjusted settings lower - no effect.
SL is the *only* program I run that it acts this way on, and I run a lot of varying things that cause a wide range of system loads.
October 19th, 2007 at 6:28 PM
I use a Mac OSX
Tiger Software

Skype, Adium, and internet (sometimes running)
Also. Everday SL crashes. I’m so annoyed at it. Usually I just stand them and in 3-20 minutes I crash. I am so frustrated with this and it has been happening since day one of SL.

I have been using the Nicholaz SL viewer for the last 3-4 weeks now
99% of the time it’s stable for me, i get the odd strange crash here and there. Really have no interest in downloading any viewer from SL website going on past performances. Reading all of this , does not surprise me one bit.

editing linked prim textures… horizontal and vertical repeats are linked together. can’t change one without the other changing to the same value. this is a bad RC and can be yanked at anytime. Try again when you can write code without introducing defects in areas of code you should not have touched. time to uninstall this borked client and go back to the previous stable RC version that should have been promoted to production. This one is a huge step backwards.

Actually I”m still using 1.18.2, but tonight neither teleports nor search will work at ALL. Mac, OS X 10.4.10, Time Warner Cable Roadrunner, hard-wired to cable, at home, normal Mac OS X firewall.

It seems that Linden is just working like the asian bios-programmers for computer mainboards… anytime you put out “beta versions” instead of fixing first the important bugs and then make a new client for us. No worry, think over it!

I’m still on the normal client, not the new RC, and behaviour today has been sluggish all day, maxing red bar packet loss in lots of sims with hardly anybody in. I’ve been crashed and had to wait 5 minutes, which is unusual on a first crash. Maybe it was the rolling restart and not the RC?

2nd Report
All three systems still running. However primary system is locking up while turning my avitar. Cleared cache and tried again. Mainly when making right hand turns while flying. Stationary motion right hand turn. Does not lock up on left hand turns. Screen freezes with arrow key highlighted, then screen goes white and locks.
This happens on the dual card system, but not on the laptop or single card system as mentioned in #23. Frame rate in the sim is still at 44 or better and time dilation is between 99 and 1. Seems to be an issue with the refresh from the client.

Your network configuration (at work or at home, behind a firewall or not, wireless or not) - Home, Basic Firewall, Not wireless

The type of router you have - Netgear

Windows Server 2003 R2 x64
NVIDIA graphics card
3GB RAM
Ethernet to DSL router (Telekom); Router with full NAT and firewall up.
No voice enabled. (Who needs it?)
I run the default viewer, not the release candidate. Yet, I would like to share some of my recent observations:
- Since about 2-3 offical releases, the SL performance deteriorates for me. A new symptom is sporadic freezing of the client for 3s up to 30s (many other users told me it happens to them, too -> seems “by design”), MTBF around 1-10minutes. The client then uses 100% CPU of one of my 2 cores.
- The past 2 rolling restarts deteriorated the experience, too. (your work on server side seems to contribute!)
- CTRL-SHIFT-1 time info shows that image and network time peak up above 10s more often than they used to. My average network frame rate (Germany) is around 5-7fps.
- I stopped doing anything which requires even the faintest real time (like sparring with bow and arrow) since the past updates. Standing on a spot and moving slowly sometimes works
- Crashes around 3-5 times in 10 hours (pretty stable)
- Memory usage increases and I usually restart SL when it is close to 2GB RAM usage.
- I downloaded the latest viewer sources and inspected how you configure your udp…you run in polling mode (nonblocking). Very special approach. You might want to consider to change to a blocking configuration and introduce some receive thread(s). The single threaded, free running rendering loop approach…might not be it (my private opinion)

Same observation here :
Horizontal and vertical texture repeats appear linked and reset to 1.000 when 0.700 is reached.
OS = XP home
Network = 16,b ADSL nominal speedcheck shows 8912Mbit so bandwidth isnt an issue with the RC.
Network feeds an ADSL Router - No firewall used.
How the hell have u managed to screw the code for these controls? I’d have assumed that this was an area of code that would not be affected by the changes you have made (Which I havent tested by the way but will now before I uninstall the RC and go back to the “stable” version)

The transaction history for today cannot find any matched items!? Eventhough there are plenty. Anybody the same issue?
October 20th, 2007 at 2:33 AM
OS: XP sp2
Network: DSL from TDC (a stable 5mbit/1mbit line) on a Siemens router
Firewall: ZoneAlarm (which has never been an issue before or with any other program)
I’ve also reported this in the PJIRA (VWR-2355) and got the notice that it was resolved, even if it wasn’t.
Multiple crashes, sometimes 5-6 in an hour. Or the viewer simply freezes for up to a minute, causing the rest of my system to hang as well. This happens especially if I use the camera, but sometimes it’s enough that I simply turn my avatar around. I’ve not experienced anything like this on other equally graphics- and ressource heavy programs. And it doesn’t matter whether I have anything else running at the same time or not.

Windows XP pro;1gb mem;AMD 2200Mhz; Radeon 9700 pro; ISP Netcabo (12Mb), Running free, no firewall no anti virus, nothing.
After install Second_Life_1-18-4-0_ReleaseCandidate_Setup SL become more laggy, some icons in contacts are weird, voice green stripes when someone is talkin vanish now its a grey smoke, in the map i can see for example 6 green dots (6 avatares) but with mouse in the map only tell me the is one avatar, music streaming stop working, only a relog fix it! Crashing hard this release and mor bugs.
October 20th, 2007 at 3:33 AM
Yes, please fix
the crashes while turning or using the cam..
the crashes while teleporting..
the sudden freezes that result in a 20-60 second hourglass and occasionally a crash..
the uncontrollable walking into quicksand pavement or flying into never never land.. which eventually results in rubberbanding or a crash..
the random detachment of attachments during teleports..
the bug where worn attachements stick to your groin..
All these have been reported over and over and over for months now.. oh yes.. and i wouldn’t be writing this if region handshakes weren’t broken right now and the system would let me log in and play..
Please record this as another unsatisfactory abend to my playing session in SL.

I’m not crashing (more than usual), but my Groups won’t load. I’m shown as belonging to 0 out of 25. I’ve tried going through the Edit menu with the same result; when I check my Profile they’re all there. As a result I can’t change my Group tag or initiate Group IMs

I love how when you update things you change things that didnt need to be changed just for the hell of it.
like in the build menu you switched some of the checkboxes around. Now i keep hitting the wrong ones. WHY do you do this was there a reason for it?
October 20th, 2007 at 6:24 AM
***TEXTURE ISSUE IN NEW VERSION? ***
Is it me or does this new verison have trouble with textures? When ever I alter the rotation, repeat or offsets of textures, the Flip boxes turn on and off, the rpeats for horizontal and vetrticle keep matching eachother and undoin new values I enter and jumping around. It’s a real pain to texture anything, nigh impossible in fact, to do it properly without many repeated attempts

Not that it matters, but i can add that the current Linux release (1.18.3.5) has never had a working login screen, way to go LL

Here’s a new one - This morning I’m unable to uncheck “see me online” or “see me on map” in my friends list. Or rather, I can uncheck them, but they go right back to checked! Still using 1.18.2, Mac OS X.
October 20th, 2007 at 6:54 AM
Okay, never mind, the friends list thing cleared up. Weird.

My main computer blew up! So I’m using a real old machine, one I never thought would even connect to SL. Ok, so generally I can get in SL and it’s painfully slow, which I realise is my machines limitations, however, on the whole I can stay in SL for quite some time and without crashes, if I’m careful, don’t move much and have barely any prims on and of course most things in preferences set low, I am actually surprised I’m crashing less than with my state-of-the-art G5 Mac with 4GB ram. So I’m just posting my computer stats as an example:

Still not sure what a ‘Client Frame Rate’ is…but the ‘new’ lag meter is in RED and it says:
‘Below 10-Possible cause: Too many complex objects in scene’.
The other lights are green.
My question or concern is WHAT is tooo complex? WHY would they be tooo complex? Too many prims? If so is the system not set up to allow for complex? Will I have to rid myself of prims I paid good money for, to use?
This seems to me, to be ANOTHER way to put the ‘blame’ for lag on the user, NOT the servers, or whatever else supports the prim use.
The other two lights are green, only the one I would be responsible for per use of prims is red…
I paid good money for the ‘complex’ prims, to build my home, my business, my ambience FOR the business–NOW I have to be told that I’m RESPONSIBLE for the ‘red’ light and the use of ‘complex’ Prims…
OK, then GIVE me back the ESTIMATED L$250,000 or so I’ve spent in 3 years here–for land, buildings (I have 260 prefabs), furniture, clothing, hair, gifts, support of meetings, and various other items purchased here–PLUS the tier fees and membership fees I’ve paid and I will ELIMINATE said ‘Complex items’ and live on bare land, ok? In fact, I will eliminate land altogether and I won’t even have to pay tier fees, mmmm kkkk?
I can be a gypsy like so many others here in SL…I’m beginning to think THEY have the right idea. Why pay for something I CAN’T enjoy, or I CAN be blamed for enjoying…
The whole issue goes back to lag…YOU must take SOME responsibility for the problem, it isn’t ALL the member who is doing this through use of ‘Complex’ prims.
In my estimation the ‘Lag’ meter is useless as long as it BLAMES members for the ‘Complex prim’ usage.
October 20th, 2007 at 11:16 AM
OK let me make this stright and simple. My Computer Surpasses the damn system req pages. but a factor of 10x why is the cilent light on the meter red. maybe poorly programed. put in havok4 already and dont make a fool of your selfs!

P.S. Im Spam, Spyware, Virus Clean, I got 2Gbs Ram, 3Ghz CPU, 512Mb Video Card. Windows Vista (Same Results on XP. So dont say its the OS. Cuz it isnt.)
October 20th, 2007 at 11:29 AM
Bandwidth.
What the hell. Raise tier and throw the money at bandwidth.
Lag and sim-crossing is going to kill SL. A slow death.
October 20th, 2007 at 11:34 AM
maybe test viewers shouldn’t be put up on the blog, since it seems people have a problem with the meaning of “test”.
also, use a seperate folder for test viewers cache.
October 20th, 2007 at 1:22 PM
Had some problems with editing texture rotations and repeats. The tab did not work properly. But all in all it seems to render a bit faster and seems to be a bit more respondable than the official client- and the lag assistant is really a progress. Not more or less crashes than with the official client, too.
October 20th, 2007 at 1:33 PM
Ah, forgot my machine..
G5, 2x 2 Ghz
MacOs 13.9
ATI Radeon 9800
ADSL
And by the way, is a “complex object” anything including more than estimated 300 Prims? Cause the client starts lagging extremely and the network moderately as soon as more than 300 prims are around. Are scripts of importance? Would be interesting to know at which point the graphic board passes operations to the processor and why. 256 MB graphic RAM here. But all of this is not etter or worse i the official client, so…business as usual.

” This update contains the latest fixes and features. We always recommend upgrading to the latest version, but now the choice is yours. Remember, these updates are connected to the Main Live Grid. See you inworld!”
I get bumped during a TP and on re-start I see this displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. On log-in I get a message saying the upgrade is mandatory.
Excuse me? Get your act together, guys. With the problems I’ve been reading about I will *not* upgrade this weekend. I’ll try to figure out a work around that will let me use the current RC viewer, which is working just fine for me, thank you. If I can’t I’ll wait until you get the bugs worked out of this one.
*Mumbles something about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing as she walks off*

Hmmm … perhaps I was a bit hasty. After three more attempts, and a re-install of the current client and a re-install of the Nicholaz patch I got in. You have to love this technology … I suppose …
