[...] Leo en el blog oficial de Linden Lab: “We imagine a future where Second Life is able grow beyond the borders of Linden Lab. We see regions running on open source, alternative simulators. We see web services that allow people to build mash-ups of Second Life and the Web. We see organizations being able to integrate their members and their members’ avatars. This is the vision of future Second Life Grid that we want to develop”. [...]

[...] This is a very interesting future, or at least proposition, for Second Life and the evolution of virtual worlds, and we must keep a close watch on what Linden Labs will be doing to stay ahead of the virtual world game (so to speak). I commend Linden Labs in keeping open ties with the great SL community. Check out the post here. [...]

i appreciate this vision.
i also appreciate that with every update, SL performance degrades.
i also appreciate that SL demonstrates little insight into user needs, now that users have been kind enough to create the SL world.

how bout some basic, unglamourous user experience functionality improvements, guys? how bout a friends list that does not crash? an inventory that does not play hide and seek? more privacy options?

stuff like that.

thanks for listening

Although opening up technical discussions to the general public always has the comic effect we see above (if one considers Luddism to be comedy), in this particular case I think it has been useful: it has reminded the people of SL to consider carefully the solidity of their foundations.

The development of virtual worlds is currently on rung 1 of a million-rung ladder. Anyone who has created an SL business based on a presumption of stability is using a business plan that is broken by design. Everything will change --- worlds, objects, business models, communities, economies, social mores, the law, and much more.

Either live with it and plan accordingly, or you might as well be writing your own virtual obituary right now. Everything will change, and not at your pace.

All the prognostication over something that appears to be smoke and mirrors. Do you people actually think that they can ever pull this off, hell they can't even make a viewer that works properly. Massive lag continues in the form of freezing as the poorly written viewer cleans up trash and makes you wait sometimes becoming lost to the point you crash. Actually quit wasting time worrying about all this hype.

As in the past some group will challenge soon then they will have to hunker down and get serious.

And as to the last enforced viewer, listen closely. I DO NOT NEED YOU TO PROTECT ME LINDEN LAB. Anyone who is fool enough to let any program, including LL, load your SL for you deserves the consequences and so much for the use any viewer program. It was just a ploy to force everyone into the poorly constructed voice system, something they want and most of us do not.

All in all nothing has changed and old bugs are re introduced with each succession of angel hair code, I know it is worse than the wire mass behind my stack of computers.

In closing there was a demo of multi servers running on a lap top but I hold out no hope we the common folk will ever have the opportunity to enjoy this as it is a Linden toy to flaunt.

Hope springs eternal. I still dream of the day when we get an update and it is really an upgrade and we are all surprised that slug life has turned into super life, but until then all we can do is wait and wait ........................

jUST SAY 'HELL NO, NO INFO! until we get a reputable company to deal with. It's already been proved they do not require the needed info. They don't care if we are of age, they just want enough to sell us to anyone with the right price!

Wow! Slapping code? That sounds like a flagging offence. Back to important stuff, ie Identity Check. Ariwhosis takes partial info and declares it proofworthy. YO LINDENS, WAKE UP, THE FOX YOU CHOSE TO GUARD THE HENHOUSE IS A FOX! THEY EAT CHICKENS!

Dirk, please feel free to make statements you can back up with clear cut examples, rather than just slinging mud out of frustration. Then, once you have your clear cut examples, please feel free to post them to the Jira.

"Their Platform, (GRID), is fatally flawed with engineers slapping code to see if it sticks to what they already know is unscalable." Cite? Example? thats a pretty sweeping statement, so you'll need to either back it up with several Jira postings demonstrating the issues you are summarizing with this statement, or simply admit you are being needlessly negative and judgemental for no reason other than the hollow satisfaction of being a somewhat anonymous whiner who clearly doesn't know the difference between s$#t and shinola.

Some interesting change to implement: voice changer. Voice may be good for many, but it ruins a part of our privacy, by revealing our real life gender or age (grating voice, etc). Even we can be recognized by our neighbours, or by sound scanners!

So a good voice changer would be appreciated, if such a thing is possible.
This would require computer-intensive sound analysis software, to change frequency or timbre. But once this done, we could get more in character voices: booming voice for a dragon, comic voice for a furry, sharp voice for a small avatar... we could even sing without learning, or have a melodious elvish voice.
