Preview of Second Life 1.17.0 on the Beta Test Grid

Friday, June 1st, 2007 at 6:59 PM by: Joshua Linden

Per an earlier blog post, we’re planning on releasing Second Life 1.17.0 next week, assuming final QA goes well.

A preview of Second Life 1.17.0 is available for Beta Testing on the Beta Test Grid. New Beta viewers will be required, and can be downloaded here. Note that these include the Voice Chat capabilities currently in beta testing as well as the 1.17.0 changes.

Please note that Second Life 1.17.0 will not include Voice Chat capabilities when released; voice testing will continue on the Beta Grid. We’ll be posting non-voice Beta Grid viewers for 1.17.0 on Monday as well, including Linux viewers.

Release notes for this first preview of 1.17.0 follow…

Release Notes for Second Life 1.17.0(107) June 1, 2007
=====================================
New features:
* Group voice chat is available. This enables group voice conversation between avatars all across the grid, no matter where avatars are located in relation to each other.
* Group voice chat is available for both “formal” Second Life groups and ad hoc groups (as is the case for text chat).
* Group voice chat for “formal” Second Life groups can be initiated by clicking on the Groups tab in the Chatterbox and double-clicking on the group with which you’d like to chat.
* Group voice chat with two or more friends can be initiated by clicking on the Friends tab in the Chatterbox, selecting multiple friends from the list, and clicking the “Call/IM” button.
* If you were speaking in a spatial voice channel prior to joining a group voice chat, you will return to the same spatial voice channel after leaving the group voice chat.
* The Talk button on the Voice tab contains a volume indicator (a dot to the right of the button text “Talk”) that shows how loudly YOU are speaking. Green indicates a normal volume, red indicates too loud a volume (a standard across speaking indicators for voice).
* Volume control and mute options are disabled on the “Near Me” tab in the Chatterbox when your own name is selected in the list of speakers.

Known Issues
* Users do not see a notification or visible invitation to group voice conversations. We expect this to be fixed in the next release, so users can accept or reject calls and receive feedback that they’ve successfully joined.
* Private voice chat with a single other user is not yet implemented.

    nasty, thanks for fixing that

and this, which has bit me before

  4. 4 Wrestling Hulka Says:

I’m confused. This post says that Voice Chat will not be included. But in the new features section it states that Group Voice Chat will be included. Can someone clarify?

  5. 5 Wrestling Hulka Says:

ah, nevermind! Having more than one client in beta can get confusing sometimes.

Has anyone from Linden Labs considered having a Beta-specific blog? :)

  6. 6 Delta Czukor Says:

    @4
There will be two different viewers. The one going out Wednesday will not be voice enabled. Voice will continue to be tested on the beta grid, separate from the regular viewer.

  7. 7 Lupercaleb Walcher Says:

So close to voice… thanks for the heads up LL

  8. 8 Jacques Groshomme Says:

    @4:

There is one version of 1.17 going to the beta grid where voice chat is enabled.

There is one version of 1.17 going live to the main grid where it is not available.

  9. 9 Ri Rasmuson Says:

Very nice but when will Second life support Vista? Most new PCs come pre-installed with Vista, so many of us have had to go over to it.

  10. 10 Usagi Musashi Says:

Good! your learning not to release extremely additions to the client like voice chat until its ready! Atleast this is a step in the right direction. Sooer or later voice will be added when its ready.

Wow 1.17 already how time flys.

  11. 11 Mr.Fix it Says:

Memory leak when are u fixing this!!!!!!

  12. 12 Darth Juniper Says:

So I note still no fixes for the placebo Stop All Animations menu, and no fixes to the bug that prevents griefers from being reported by stopping their name being found in the abuse report name finder.

  13. 13 Sweet Primrose Says:

Congrats on shoving the thought-police blog entry off the sign-in page. Impressive.

  14. 14 Untameable Wildcat Says:

Still no mention of fixing the group IM window reopening itself after you leave a group IM chat?

  15. 15 Daniel Taft Says:

I’m a teen grid user and everyone around me seems to be getting more and more excited for the release of voice in SecondLife! I do think it is somewhat stupid to be releasing more voice features in beta, but not in the main grid(s), I, along with everyone else in TSL cannot wait for the release of voice!

  16. 16 Johnny Sleestak Says:

Again I see no reference to vwr-364 issue (Memory Leak), its the 3rd highest voted viewer issue and again its not touched. All these other bug fixes are so far down the vote list. Whats the point of the issue tracker and voting???

I think the issue tracker and voting is to make us think we’re adding input and direction…..

  17. 17 Alissa Sabre Says:

Should it be called 1.17.0? I have a feeling that all changes in 1.17.0 since 1.16.0 seems bug fixes. No protocol changes are planned either. That concludes it is just a 1.16.1…

    Or, am I missing something?

  18. 18 Usagi Musashi Says:

    Group Im Messaging……………BROKEN

    Mutes………………………………BROKEN

Can These be address in fixes!!!!!!!! I understand that sl is breaking new ground in ways. We need some kind of pattern of fix one issue before adding a another feature that will need fixing early in its devopement. I also undestand the grid monkeys are doing their best. But even with the losing of rates loads are still over loading the date base, this didnt solve anything. Infact things are getting worse. Missing gestures, scripts and other assets belonging to avies are still missing and getting worse. Please don`t remove features you don`t fully believe will reduce loads ( rates ) is a perfect example how the coders believed the load would be reduced. But infact it didnt matter as much as they thought. Look now still the same issues and problems even without rates. Timing out of events is still occuring? why? Well because LLabs still is failing to understand the base they call asset server base is a total JOKE! If llabs can`t either support this many users or even support the current level of inventory of users. The limit EVERYONE or raise Prices! And STOP FREE ACCOUNTS!!!!!

  19. 19 Simon Nolan Says:

Woot! VWR-409 is my patch! (teensy as it was.) Yay for open-sourcing the viewer! I just wanted to point out how knowledgeable residents are helping make SL better for everyone. These Residents deserve a big thanks from everyone:

    VWR-870, VWR-849, VWR-823, VWR-810, VWR-809, VWR-808, VWR-807, VWR-805 patched by Nicholaz “Mad Patcher” Beresford

VWR-682, VWR-671 patched by Zi Ree

    VWR-412 patched by Drewan Keats

    Way to go guys!

  20. 20 Usagi Musashi Says:

As for memory Leaks when I reach level of 1 million+ this is scary! With voice coming its just going to get worse. Promoting features like voice is only as good as the hardware that is the backbone of the company (LLABS). Voice will not only cause more issues but it will indeed cause more users to quit. Because tUSERS can`t support on their own machines the half brained 1 year level of understand how LLABS to build a useful product.

  21. 21 Lenneth Hannya Says:

Leave it to 16 to start out complaining about free accounts.. Know what.. if they remove those then all you get is the corperate scuttleheads and the techies who actualy can understand it.. this is after all a Learning experience and one people like to share with friends.. STOP THE GRIEF ABOUT FREE ACCOUNTS thats not your call thats LLABS..

  22. 22 Jesse Says:

I am a bit concerned as to the purity of the test results. If voice is not going to be a part of the final release, then how can you get accurate test results if it is a part of the beta testing? Seems to me like it corrupts the lab, if you know what I mean, and introduces variables that will not be present when 1.17 goes live on the main grid, increasing the likelihood for any number of unforseen possibilities.

  23. 23 Yoz Linden Says:

@Simon: You’re right - there are some great patches coming from external developers that have gone into this release. It’s great to see that the open source effort is working, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who’s helping us make the Second Life viewer better.

To those asking about memory leaks: VWR-364 (Memory leak) is an umbrella bug covering a number of different leaks. Lots of them have been fixed in this release, many by external developers.

  24. 24 JayR Cela Says:

Yoz Linden ~ Thanks for clearing up the memory leak questions :_)

  25. 25 FireFox Bancroft Says:

*waits for the negative posts saying LL isn’t focusing on bugs*

Holy crap thats a boatload of fixes LL, good job.

  26. 26 saijanai Says:

Howabout a bugf ix that lets me log into the beta? I don’t know when your snapshot of accounts was taken because it isn’t listed on the page (the date is actually a space, whee), but obviously I’m still not authorized for beta testing…

  27. 27 Mr.Fix it Says:

What about the rendering issues that when you render the whole client crashes ?

  28. 28 Issarlk Chatnoir Says:

Double plus good LL. Now the citizen won’t notice the bumped down entry about crimethink.

  29. 29 Benja Kepler Says:

Perhaps it’s too early in the day and I haven’t read this properly, but can you clarify what is the ‘browser cache’ that can be cleared in the Web tab in Preferences?

Is this a cache just used by the viewer OR the whole cache used by Internet Explorer?

I’d like that clarified in case I lose all my cookie settings on my machine.

  30. 30 Matthew Dowd Says:

Any fix for the new 1.16 bug which results in scripted objects still being present (but in an invisible, undeletable state) on Take?

  31. 31 WarKirby Magojiro Says:

Who gives a damn about bugs when you’re destroying SL with your censorship policy?

  32. 32 Usagi Musashi Says:

90 said…….To those asking about memory leaks: VWR-364 (Memory leak) is an umbrella bug covering a number of different leaks. Lots of them have been fixed in this release, many by external developers.

Well how many times in the past 2 years have we been told every possible reason for leaks? All due repect and I mean it, is it possibe to have a limit to the chances of memory leaks do to codes be written wrote to start with? Like have a understanding that it may result if “X” is not fully stable enought to handle “Y.” If that may occur don`t even do “X” if Y will result in a memory leak?

Talking out of your set of checks again trolly-san……………Gesh :/

  34. 34 Domino Marama Says:

I can’t help but wonder if roll outs to main grid would be smoother if the actual code base that will be released is tested on beta rather than pulling things like voice out at the 11th hour so the release compile is effectively untested.

  35. 35 Domino Marama Says:

Sorry about the off topic post, just thought it was worth mentioning that Live Journal may have some advice for LL on censorship. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/01/livejournal_sorry_censor/

  36. 36 Pyrii Akula Says:

I don’t think it’s been mentioned here, but the chatterbox is SERIOUSLY unpopular, why are the lindens continuing to use it, it takes up far too much of the screen and is more difficult to use, it’d be nice to see this as an addition and not a requirement as it currently is in voice beta. Stick to a modular UI design please.

I think many people on voice beta will agree with me. That is if you took the time to join us.

  37. 37 Zbyszek Says:

  38. 38 Cat Gisel Says:

    * Auto-accept inventory and auto-preview texture/notecard/landmark are now separate preferences.

YAY! Inventory help. DO you know HOW many times I wished I could just “Turn this off” ? Now if we can ONLY get the Blue PopUps from resetting my scrolling down (back to the top) when ever I try to work on my inventory…

    The login problems are back!

I’m waiting to get in right now, stuck on connecting to region. It’s Saturday and these problems are reoccuring, *sighs*. Here’s to RL, hey maybe that’s what Linden Labs is trying to tell us, hmmmm?

I’m just hoping this release will bring back a more stable environment. I’m feeling like a big dummy now for signing up for a whole year of premium instead of going on a month by month basis. Stupid me!

I love the fixes but still I am curious about the one I reported awhile ago VWR-333 when upon login I get spammed with gesture missing notices. Also, gestures that were active on last login are not anymore but they show as active.

Good luck to all, keep your head down!

  43. 43 McCabe Maxsted Says:

@13 A lot of the lower-voted bugs get fixed simply because they’re easier. Random crashes, memory leaks, etc, are hard to reproduce and can be difficult fixes (just look at SVC-124). For what it’s worth, I’m just happy LL reads the damn thing and responds. Knowing that the quality of my experience is important to LL–even for sometimes trivial annoyances–is helping to restore some of my lost faith in the company. I’m even starting to consider upgrading my account again (but will hold out to see how well voice goes).

  44. 44 Max Kleiber Says:

    Interesting..
Does the availability of a non-voice beta client indicate that when this is implemented on the main grid there will be a non-voice client available for those of us who are physically unable to use voice, or simply uninterested?
Furthermore, does this indicate a trend that multiple clients might be available in the future, to work more closely within the capabilities of older or lower-end client systems?

  45. 45 Stefano Says:

My sad last words about voice:

1 - First voice in Second life is a nonsense. Second Life means second voices. Second Life means yourself and/or yourselves. As many voices as you want. The rest is nonsense.

2 - SL means the freedom to be yourself and/or yourselves. Voice will kill imagination and fantasies. So please LLabs change “Second Life” in “Real Life Two”.

3 - For those who keep on saying: “You can desable voice”…This is NOT a choice: the refrains will be “Prove me who you are” and “Why do you disable voice? What are you hiding?”. So many dramas…

4 - For those who keep on saying: “We want the freedom to enable voice”…You already have many tools to make your voice heard. And webcams too. And msn and yahoo and so on. Let SL be a social community where we can actually express ourselves.

But its too late now…market kills community and real life business kills romance and fantasies. Avatars will be just excuses for RL meetings. From a psychological point of view this is the end.

  46. 46 Despil Korobase Says:

    Yes Stefano.
    It will be IMVU 2.0

A pretty, shiny, 3D chatprogram. Do I need one that’sw so bloody big?
    No…

)) To those asking about memory leaks: VWR-364 (Memory leak) is an umbrella bug covering a number of different leaks. Lots of them have been fixed in this release, many by external developers. ((

With all due respect. What is described in VWR-364 has twovery specific causes. One is user fixable (details in VWR-733) and the other is a leak as big as burst water pipe behind your kitchen sink and it’s documented there.

I have found that one and fixed a lot minor memory leaks (most of the VWR-8xx above in the list are from myself), but these have nothing to do with the effects in VWR-364

Anybody who’s interested in the details of the leak, they are here:
    http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2007/05/leftovers-leaks-and-leak.html

  50. 50 Baleia Says:

I just want to know why brasilian people cant buy lindens at the moment, can someone pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease tell me?

  51. 51 Steve Finn Says:

LOL, I’m over SL. I used to spend almost all my free time here a few months ago, but things are getting so much worse, and on top of that I guess Im just bored. my MAIN issue though, and one that was NEVER solved was the items that I bought that just plain disappeared from my inventory.

That made me stop buying things, and ultimately lead to my disinterest in SL. I mean if you can’t be sure that what you buy will be in your inventory tomorrow, and LL just says buying and keeping inventory is “At your own risk”, then how can I or WE buy anything? After that I was done.

I may still pop in once in a while to say hello to friends, but I will never spend any more money here. I mean there are records of every financial transaction that takes place here; I.E., I buy something for 5000 L, there is a record, so when that 5000L items vanishes somehow, and never reappears, how can LL say that they can’t verify that I had it or purchased it?

This issue for me is the clincher, I can get over bugs, or crashes, but when money spent can just disappear, by the items not being there and no accountability from LL, then I’m done.

And the ratings too, how can they sell us ratings, and then take them with no refund? And why did no one say anything? I saw no posts about it before except the ones I posted. I mean I hardly bought any ratings, but that’s not the point! I’ve seen people who had given over 3,000 ratings, and I feel like they would feel!

Let’s face it, SL is and can be fun, but these issues, as well as the ones that aren’t personally applicable to me make it UNFUN. If this continues LL will find that it doesn’t pay to ignore their income source, US the paying SL resident… Well not me anymore, but you know what I mean..

I wish you all the best in your dealings with SL and LL, GOOD LUCK!!

  52. 52 Nefertiti Nefarious Says:

Any chance that the Linux viewer will be able to UPLOAD TEXTURES as well as use ALT-ZOOM without changing from window to full-screen. They both work, but not with the same viewing setup.

Also Linux big: for heaven’s sake fix the sound so it uses ALSA, not that antique OSS stuff, and cleans up after itsself when it closes. I would like to enjoy concerts and listen to music on the sims, but if I do, I have to reboot to pry it loose from my sound system. Bug has been filed.

  53. 53 Baleia Says:

And i dont know why the voice, if somoene want to speak go to skype or msn, sl is growing up and you cant do a big change, a lot of people dont like, i really dont like!
This can be the start of the end!

  54. 54 Priya Dollinger Says:

I agree with Stefano about RL voice in SL. If you want a RL experience from SL there are many options. My friends who are married in SL and live in different countries in RL talk to each other via VOIC (not completely sure if I got that acronym correct).

SL is fantasy. I don’t care what the person looks or sounds like in RL. We should be able to pick SL voices to match our SL avatars.

If I bump into a RL business associate, relative, neighbor, etc I don’t want them to recognize me from my voice. I want anonymity in SL.

  55. 55 Ravanne Sullivan Says:

Is anything going to be done about the vastly degraded frame rate? The changes that came from the First Look viewer tests made a big improvment that has gotten worse with each subsequent update until now it is so bad that SL is almost unusable to me. I have a very fast system, super fast nvidia graphics card, fast internet access and all the latest drivers and still getting frame rates of 5 or fewer FPS where once I was getting 45 FPS or better.

  56. 56 Keiko Rau Says:

Im one of the first to shout “stability before features” so its great to see so many fixes and cleanups in this release. Thanks LLAB, and thanks to those that sent in patches too! I cant wait to try it, and I hope it addresses the problems with Group IM that we are still having.

  57. 57 Farrah Foss Says:

Well, nothing is working again. Guess I will go see if beta is any better. Keep getting booted with “Your account will not be available” errors, when I do get in, can’t save objects or scripts - Assest error please try to save later”

Whats the point? Nice skys, maybe voice some day, so we can sit around in a pretty picture and voacalize about how nothing else works?

Everytime I get on here and talk about what good job LL is doing, they make a liar out of me shortly there after.

  65. 65 SiTWulf Wakmann Says:

Fix the logins problems, and the Sims problems!

  66. 66 Cat Cotton Says:

Houston you have a grid problem, you might want to look into it.

Sat. log in and world issues.

    Just saying.

  67. 67 Joshua Linden Says:

    @Wrestling Hulka:

Sorry about the confusion about Voice/Non-Voice. Writing these blog entries is always a balance between saying something short enough that everyone will read it and long enough that it has all of the details. Regarding a Beta-specific blog, I’m planning to start blogging a more general “Release Roadmap” that looks a few months ahead when possible. Hopefully that will appear soon.

    @Untameable Wildcat:

Re: group IM window reopening - that should be fixed in 1.17.0 as well; it’s not in the first beta build but should be there on Monday. That fix is actually simple and should have gone out with 1.16.0 but was lost in the shuffle. My apologies. :(

    @Simon Nolan:

Thanks for calling out the contributors! I meant to do that in the Beta announcement post but ran out of time. I’ll make sure to call out the names in the final 1.17 announcement, and of course names should be there in the contributions.txt file in the releases and code drops. Way to go folks!

    @Jesse:

Re: purity of the test results - your concerns are quite legitimate. To migitate your concerns (and mine) somewhat, the server code deployed does represent what is planned to go out as the 1.17 release, it’s simply the viewers that will be different. That said, we’re well aware that the testing over the weekend will not represent the release configuration for 1.17 (non-voice clients) and will be therefore focusing our attention from Monday onward on that, and the shorter testing time frame will factored into our confidence for going forward with the release on time, along with data gathered during testing. (PS: We’re hiring! Skeptical nitpickers wanted!)

    @Benja Kepler:

Re: does “browser cache” mean your web browser, or just the embedded browser? Great question - I’ve confirmed with the developer that the option only affects the browser embedded in Second Life. It will NOT affect your Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari (etc) cache.

    @Matthew Dowd:

Re: scripted objects left behind in a wierd state on take - we don’t have a fix in 1.17 yet, but there are a few more fixes that will be merged in pending testing. That’s a particularly horrible bug that is getting attention. Hopefully it’ll make it into 1.17.0.

    @Max Kleiber:

When voice chat capabilities are ready for release, it will be part of the main viewer. However, there’s a master switch that turns it off. And when it’s off, there’s no sign of it (as beta grid users who haven’t changed the default can relate)

    @Nicholaz Beresford:

First off, hats off and my deepest gratitude for your awesome work plugging leaks! Getting the code base down to zero leaks is critical for making sure no future leaks are introduced. (I.e. eliminate the noise so you can see the signal) We have several more fixes hopefully going into 1.17.0 (including several more leak patches); I’m not sure if the libcurl upgrade will make it in, but I have my fingers crossed. If not, we’ll release an optional viewer update as soon as possible afterwards.

#26 is proof that no matter how many bugs LL stomps, you people will find something new to complain about.

This is on the beta grid for a reason also, it’s there for final QA. Also it looks like #35 missed the line:

“Please note that Second Life 1.17.0 will not include Voice Chat capabilities when released; voice testing will continue on the Beta Grid. ”

Also for #35 you can just tell people you don’t have a mic and most people will accept that. If you’ve been on the beta grid in the last couple of months you’d know that first-hand.

I beleive that theese are good fixes, and the Wind Light and Voice Chat will be nice, but stability is an issue. There are a lot of small bugs, which you are doing good to eliminate, but we need to have the texture bug fixed more.

  74. 74 Joe Minnelli Says:

#35 makes we wonder how voice will really impact SL. The allure of SL (for many) has been the elimination of RL constraints that allowed a more uninhibited expression of thoughts, ideas, opinions, feelings, art, creativity, etc. The more RL characteristics that are applied to SL, the more it becomes an extension of RL, rather than a diversion from RL. It’s hard to say if the end result is good or bad … but the SL experience will clearly be different than today. For those who enjoyed the release from RL “shackles” (whatever they may be to any individual), RL will quite possibly become a less interesting place.

Oh i know…furries are terrible cratures assaulting the girl next door wearing her pretty headset. Oh yes ban the furries! They dont exist, as also gor states. Slavery exists and its ok right?

  78. 78 Diomedes Nikolaidis Says:

    @ 35 Stefano

    Right on!

Once again I will add my opinion that voice chat will be the downfall of SL. I am not here to listen to RL voices, nor see SL turn into the world’s largest phone sex site. Enable it for the big $$$ Corporations who want to use SL as an inexpensive teleconference platform and let the rest of the residents have their peace.

Or are the Lindens even listening. (Received notice of my upcoming premium renewal today. Hmmmm…what to do. What to do.)

  79. 79 DR Dahlgren Says:

Voice is not a big deal. It should have very little net effect on the grid and you can turn it off on your land, in your viewer, etc.

What I don’t like is that even if off, the History window now has the voice stuff in it. Please set that so that if voice is disabled, we get the normal Chat History window.

I just got back from Beta. The minute I went the Cordoba Sandbox I got griefed. Nice. Would have stayed longer but could not seem to have more than a few minutes peace without this “woman” showing up and caging me. My assumption, it was an underage male in Mama’s account. Oh well.

Until some kind of recourse is available to either Linden or individual residents against this type of thing, Griefers will continue to be able to ruin the experience for the rest of us.

Sure hope things get better in that regard, or the beauty and techology won’t matter, SL will be the online gambling, virtual sex capital of the internet, and nothing more.

Thank you, Joshua, for taking the time to respond to the various items you noted. Assuming all other functions will perform normally with voice disabled, you have truly set my mind at ease regarding voice.

I am, however, still worried about whether my machine’s capabilities will extend far enough to remain usable with the various graphic updates, notably WindLight, which I found rendered the viewer unusable in the first release of FirstLook.

Does virtual reality need a sheriff?
Reach of law enforcement is tested when online fantasy games turn sordid

UNITED NATIONS - Earlier this year, one animated character in Second Life, a popular online fantasy world, allegedly raped another character.

Some Internet bloggers dismissed the simulated attack as nothing more than digital fiction. But police in Belgium, according to newspapers there, opened an investigation into whether a crime had been committed. No one has yet been charged.

Then last month, authorities in Germany announced that they were looking into a separate incident involving virtual abuse in Second Life after receiving pictures of an animated child character engaging in simulated sex with an animated adult figure. Though both characters were created by adults, the activity could run afoul of German laws against child pornography, prosecutors said.
As recent advances in Internet technology have spurred millions of users to build and explore new digital worlds, the creations have imported not only their users’ dreams but also their vices. These alternative realms are testing the long-held notions of what is criminal and whether law enforcement should patrol the digital frontier.

“People have an interest in their property and the integrity of their person. But in virtual reality, these interests are not tangible but built from intangible data and software,” said Greg Lastowka, a professor at the Rutgers School of Law at Camden in New Jersey.

Some virtual activities clearly violate the law, like trafficking in stolen credit card numbers, he said. Others, like virtual muggings and sex crimes, are harder to define, though they may cause real-life anguish for users.

    Virtual killings, muggings, rapes
Simulated violence and thievery have long been a part of virtual reality, especially in the computer games that pioneered online digital role-playing. At times, however, this conduct has crossed the lines of what even seasoned game players consider acceptable.

In World of Warcraft, the most popular online game, with an estimated 8 million participants worldwide, some regions of this fantasy domain have grown so lawless that players said they fear to brave them alone. Gangs of animated characters have repeatedly preyed upon lone travelers, killing them and making off with their virtual belongings.

Two years ago, Japanese authorities arrested a man for carrying out a series of virtual muggings in another popular game, Lineage II, by using software to beat up and rob characters in the game and then sell the virtual loot for real money.

Julian Dibbell, a prominent commentator on digital culture, chronicled the first known case of sexual assault in cyberspace in 1993, when virtual reality was still in its infancy. A participant in LambdaMOO, a community of users who congregated in a virtual California house, had used a computer program called a “voodoo doll” to force another player’s character to act out being raped. Though this virtual world was rudimentary and the assault simulated, Dibbell recounted that the trauma was jarringly real. The woman whose character was attacked later wept — “post-traumatic tears were streaming down her face” — as she vented her outrage and demand for revenge in an online posting, he wrote.

Since then, advances in high-speed Internet, user interfaces and graphic design have rendered virtual reality more real, allowing users to endow their characters with greater humanity and identify ever more closely with their creations.

    ‘Double-edged sword’
Nowhere is this truer than in Second Life, where more than 6 million people have registered to create characters called avatars, cartoon human figures that respond to keyboard commands and socialize with others’ characters. The breadth of creativity and interaction in Second Life is greater than on nearly any other virtual-reality Web site because there is no game or other objective; it is just an open-ended, lifelike digital environment.

Moreover, Linden Labs, which operates Second Life, has given users the software tools to design their characters and online setting as they see fit; some avatars look like their real-life alter egos, while others are fantastical creations.

This virtual frontier has attracted a stunning array of immigrants. Former senator John Edwards of North Carolina, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, has opened a virtual campaign headquarters. Reuters and other news agencies have set up virtual bureaus. IBM has developed office space for employee avatars. On May 22, Maldives became the first country to open an embassy in Second Life, with Sweden following this week.

Second Life is intended only for adults, and about 15 percent of the properties on the site — in essence, space on computer servers that appear as parcels of land — have been voluntarily flagged by their residents as having mature material. Though some is relatively innocent, in some locations avatars act out drug use, child abuse, rape and various forms of sadomasochism.

“This is the double-edged sword of the wonderful creativity in Second Life,” Dibbell said in an interview.

One user found herself the unwilling neighbor of an especially sordid underage sex club. “Tons of men would drop in looking for sex with little girls and boys. I abhorred the club,” wrote the user on a Second Life blog under the avatar name Anna Valeeva. She even tried to evict the club by buying their land, she wrote.

    Disagreements among countries
The question of what is criminal in virtual reality is complicated by disagreements among countries over what is legal even in real life. For example, virtual renderings of child abuse are not a crime in the United States but are considered illegal pornography in some European countries, including Germany.

After German authorities began their investigation, Linden Labs issued a statement on its official blog condemning the virtual depictions of child pornography. Linden Labs said it was cooperating with law enforcement and had banned two participants in the incident, a 54-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, from Second Life.

Some Second Life users objected on the blog that Linden Labs had gone too far.

“Excuse me. You banned two residents, both mature, who did a little role-playing? No children, I repeat no children, were harmed or even involved in that act,” protested another user on the Second Life blog. “Since when is fantasy against the fricking law?”

Philip Rosedale, the founder and chief executive of Linden Labs, said in an interview that Second Life activities should be governed by real-life laws for the time being. He recounted, for example, that his company has called in the FBI several times, most recently this spring to ensure that Second Life’s virtual casinos complied with U.S. law. Federal investigators created their own avatars and toured the site, he said.

In coming months, his company plans to disperse tens of thousands of computer servers from California and Texas to countries around the world in order to improve the site’s performance. Also, he said, this will make activities on those servers subject to laws of the host countries.

Rosedale said he hopes participants in Second Life eventually develop their own virtual legal code and justice system.

“In the ideal case, the people who are in Second Life should think of themselves as citizens of this new place and not citizens of their countries,” he said.

  88. 88 Coventina Dalgleish Says:

Oh my I can hardly wait for the voice option except for from what I have seen on the beta grid (double negative) the lag was immense and the confusion of babel overwhelming. I don’t know if any one has noticed that many of the typed dialogs created by individuals make little sense.

I cant wait to see what goes on when they don’t have time to think about what they are saying. There is enough open mouth and insert foot spam out there now. So now we will be able to open our mouths and remove all doubt. Well every where except on my islands. There are plenty of work around’s to voice personally we use YMB to let our friends know why we are suddenly not in the game because the game can not cope with something as simple as opening inventory or trying to edit an item that you have been working on for half a day. It is also a nice place to vent about the developers who have created a monster that will , in my opinion, never be bug free. There are just too many variables in this formula and too many lost lines of code.

It would just be nice if the game would work as designed originally with out all of the eye wash that has been added in the last year.

I have little faith that all of the bug fixes will not create as many new irritations that will take three to six months to fix if ever.

Also I noticed a comment that a user was unable to log on today. Well this never happens to me, except today. Why should I support multiple islands when I can’t log in. Perhaps there needs to be a priority cache for we that spend money to support this adventure. And this is not a slap at the free accounts as they do create many items and add to the economy, oh also there are several country’s that do not use either credit cards or allow pay pal to operate within their borders.

  89. 89 Fourman Forwzy Says:

1.17 doesn’t accept my password; 1.16 works fine. Do I need to sugn up separately for beta test?

  90. 90 Feynt Mistral Says:

Joshua, does the browser cache clearing, and cookies indicate that the browser will become more open to general web browsing? Or is this only a notice that logging into the SL Wiki will now be possible? For reasons that escape me, browsing the web (or at least the SL wiki) in the SL client is far more processor efficient than having a separate browser open, and I look forward to being able to hit Google with it in a window. Perhaps the first look client could be allowed to visit other pages?

To all you people who say that voice will ruin SL, you really don’t read as much as your protests would suggest you do. Voice can be turned off on any parcel. If you own the land, disable voice and be done with it. If you are against voice, chances are your favorite hangouts will share some if not all of your sentiment and disable it too, or will disable it if enough people protest. If not, you can still type while others talk, no one’s forcing you to speak.

And to Stefano specifically, dude, what’s your damage? There’s half a dozen voice mod programs out there, free or at least unlimited demo versions, which will disguise your voice on SL. I’ve met a couple people who have tried them on the beta grid and thought they worked well. I thought they were alright, but clearly they needed further tweaking. It’s not LL’s place to offer these options. It’s YOUR place, because you want to hide that you’re a 14 year old on the adult grid.

And for the record, bestiality does not include furries for the most part, unless you would consider them lower class animals. That’s an argument you don’t want to get into.
