1.16 Release: Wednesday May 23
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 at 3:34 PM by: Jeska LindenWe’re pleased to be announcing the release of Second Life 1.16.0. This release will require a viewer update. As mentioned, we expect the Second Life Grid to be unavailable Wednesday May 23 from 6AM – 12PM PDT.
We apologize for giving short notice on tomorrow’s release, but 1.16.0 includes much-requested fixes from our community that we wanted to include ASAP. We encourage you to visit the Second Life Beta Test Grid during the downtime.
Here are the highlights of the release:
- A fix for a notorious inventory loss bug, “No-copy objects can be lost while taking them”, also known as “derez loss”. Now, if a “Take” of a no-copy object fails, a message will display indicating the failure and the object will remain in-world instead of disappearing. This is significant progress towards fixing related bugs, and we understand how urgent and crucial inventory loss issues are.
- An important fix for the Group IM issues: “Group IMs Not Working Properly” (VWR-513); this fix also includes speedier transmission of group IMs as well.
- The much-awaited release of sculpted prims, aka “sculpties”. This fun new prim type will hopefully result in both the creation of cool new content and help lower prim use, increasing performance in some situations! We’ve been testing Sculpties on the Beta Grid for the last few weeks and many Residents are already discovering their creative potential. Read more about how to use this new prim type at the Sculpted Prim wiki page.
Other smaller-yet-welcome fixes include:
- Fixed placement of LSL Wiki Help window and minimize/maximize buttons while scripting
- Lots of polish and typo corrections for alert dialog text
- There’s also a new scripting call, llRegionSay, which reduces the need for object chat relays, resulting in better, broader text communication across entire regions. See the wiki page for more details.
We will post the full Release Notes tomorrow morning. Thanks again for your patience while we work to improve Second Life!

nice job with the updates sl is getting better every wednesday
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:38 PM
Woot! Wait, no voice??
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:41 PM
Yeah youd think voice would come first.. I was more excited about that than sculpties..
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:42 PM
llRegionSay NICE!
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:42 PM
This is a great update… Sculpted prims ? WooooooooooooooT !!!
I hope everything goes smooth after the update :=)
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:48 PM
I didn’t hope it comes with the new Client is 1-16-0-4. You can’t make any settings with this version, it crashes immediately.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:04 PM
SL is getting better every Wed. I agree with budster slade. Losing some great ” no copy” items was a bummer, but I take it all in stride because SL is a wonderful experiance. Keep getting better!!
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:06 PM
This is great news for me at the moment.
I’ve been having all sorts of problems in creating a weather generator and having the drone stations limited to 100m distance from the controlling object, so llRegionSay looks like it may be just what I need for this.
I’ve also been having problems in building cascades of flowforms - I can get some 95% of the shape with a couple of prims, but always get stuck on the lip/spout of each bowl where the water comes out - sculpted prims will hopefully ease my pain :))
Bring ‘em on !!!
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:06 PM
Wooohooo, and now we can Really start Playing and having Lots more Fun, Yeah!!!! As for Voice I think someone may have been at that other place I was at for years, oh my the day they updated the whole thing from version to version, and new Server they had a Whopping 325 people at the main area and with the VoIP enabled, within Seconds it was Totally Crashed and Burned, was down for an entire day after that. I am sure SL wants to be better, and understands the slow rollout of this feature. Could you Imagine the Entire SL Network going down because VoIP was active? Wow and for an entire DAY..Could any SL user do without that for that long?
I know I was going crazy when I moved. 3 weeks off aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:07 PM
I’m setting expectations real low for this. I won’t be surprised to see losses for days. That being said, I hope it goes smoothly and without any issues at all.
Plan for the worst and hope for better. Then be pleased when all goes well.

May 22nd, 2007 at 4:13 PM
Well, glad to see the inventory loss issue finally getting resolved. Although I’ve only managed to actually *lose* one nocopy item when trying to rez it in world.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:15 PM
Most dont really care about features like sculpyed prims. The real value is a stable environment
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:15 PM
Having just recently again fallen foul of the ‘derez loss’ bug I am looking forward to this update. In fact I am feeling very positive about it. I am sure the update fixes a lot more than that and look forward to reading the full release notes.
I know at times I have been vocal with complaint so I would just like to take this opportunity to say ‘Thank you Linden’

Eagerly awaits for the new product line that Xcite might be rolling out with sculpties…oops, did I say that out loud? In any case, the inventory loss issue is a welcome fix, as well as the others.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:26 PM
When 1.16.0.0 was on the beta grid I couldn’t get in without crashing within five seconds (a generous estimate).
I’m biting my fingernails at this one…
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:27 PM
Hey:
How about a comment regarding Voice? Is it in or out……the usual list of release notes for the version seems to be missing from the announcement.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:27 PM
Marvellous! Really looking forward to making, and keeping, sculpties. Keep it coming!
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:29 PM
Woops! Read to the bottom of the announcement-release notes out tomorrow. Got it.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:29 PM
Wow!
Even though im a bit worried if sculpties will slow down the grid im very very exited to try them out in the main grid!
The One prim head by Chip Midnight is lovely! omg *big eyes* amazing
And a huge thanks for looking at the content loss!
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:35 PM
llRegionSay will remove a lot of the weird stuff we have to do to move messages around quickly and easily. Right now, I frequently rez objects that use the warp trick to get a message from one place in a sim to another — it works but it’s a ridiculously heavy solution for what should always have been very simple and easy on sim resources.
Now, the only thing we’re missing is something like llTargetSay(key id, integer channel, string msg), which would be a lot less of a drag on sim resources than an instant message is for sending messages to people, or the even more elaborate solutions used to try to communicate with a specific object. Lack of simple, lightweight functions like this cause scripts consume far more resources than they ought to in order to solve what should be simple problems.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:35 PM
I hate sculpted prims. I mean seriously, why did I just spend the last year and a half perfecting my skills with SL’s building system if as of tomorrow those skills are practically of no value because now I can make all these whatever shapes with YAY PRIMS THAT ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM EVERYTHING ELSE. -_-;;;
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Surprised sculpties will be here as soon as tomorrow. I just hope you develop the ZBrush exporter right after the 3DS Max one. =)
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:44 PM
@23: lol I know the feeling. It’s like learning how to do more with less, becoming an expert at it that everyone admires because you can do more with less better than everyone else, and then suddenly the constraints are gone and it’s no longer needed because now we can just have more and don’t need to try to make do with less. Now anyone can easily do what only you could do before.
Still, there are limits to what you can do with sculpties, they’re a less than ideal solution in many cases, due both to the limits in their number of points, shapes possible, and the weird way they can change appearance based on distance.
In other words, they can be tricky, and expertise will be required to use them well. Everyone will be capable of doing more than they could before, but those of us who could push the limits before will still be able to push the limits and go beyond what the average joe can do.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:49 PM
As I understand it, right now it takes programs that cost several thousands of dollars to make sculpties.
When will the free Blender program (I believe it is) be able to be used to make these?

May 22nd, 2007 at 4:50 PM
The simpler, more curvy objects I created didn’t seem affected by the LOD thing as much as more complex ones like helix and spirals. (The more twists, the worse it looks at a distance.) I wonder if this is just the nature of the beast or whether something can be done about it in future. It’s a shame to have so many unusuable building possibilities.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:52 PM
Hmm, the voice worked perfectly with me, i don’t see why it shouldn’t be released. Oh well, the sculpted prims were my main concern, all i have to do now is wait for a proper plugin for 3dsmax, instead of the faulty unwrap technique… I notice many people being angry about sculpteys replacing the old ways, but i think that what they do is bridge that gap between real 3d and a prim-based system. Not only that, but the sculpt-shaping is done mostly by the engine, so we won’t have to worry about lag either.
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:53 PM
I think regionsay is going to be a spam problem, even if it can’t spam standard chat.
I’m curious to know how much thought went into this…
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:58 PM
Great? What about all the stuff I have already lost because they won’t rez from my inventory? Are they ever going to rez? Half of my items in inventory won’t rez…
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:59 PM
I will have an Oz of whatever Gaius Goodliffe is smoking please
The new prims will be a huge shock to people who have no idea what they are all about or how to go about creating them .
I expect to see every new resident and his dog walking about with a mushroom attached to every limb
Good luck with the update …fingers crossed here
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:01 PM
@28
All it does is is effectively double the range of Shout… I don’t see it constituting a problem.
It solves a major need in LSL.
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:14 PM
I sincerely hope this update remedies the problem I’ve been having with textures. It is such a pain having to drag textures from inventory to all surfaces of an object or group of linked objects to make a global alteration. It doesn’t seem to matter what I do, or which of my accounts I use, or where I go to work on stuff - it still doesn’t work.
Also - as an aside, but an interesting observation - every night (as an Australian) there are less than 25k people on the grid (including campers) and yet we get more lag and packet loss problems than when it’s US daytime.
Is this the time that LL do backups or run other programs - which have a side-effect of diminishing grid performance?
I’ve been watching this and have talked to others about it for months now. It’s not a recent phenomenon.
As someone who has played around a fair bit with voice on Beta over the past weeks, I’m completely pleased that LL are not implementing it yet.
There needs to be a much more inclusing dialogue between LL and the Beta voice users on issues before it gets rolled out.
My suggestion would be that LL call a meeting of voice users in Beta to discuss this, or allow us to make definate suggestions that we know will be heard.
So….
I will cross my fingers on Thursday (my time) and hope that I don’t freeze so much, lag so much, packet loss so much - and can apply textures correctly.
I would encourage as many people as possible to try out voice, and get advice from those in Beta who are a bit more experienced - it needs really solid testing - and a lot more people who try it out and who can then teach people inworld when it hits the maingrid.
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:15 PM
I tried following the blender tutorial and that is one NASTY user interface to actually use.
The demo has a problem that the mesh really needs to be a multiple of 32×32 to minimize artifacting.
I’ve also made some prims just in photoshop. Adding R G B layers in a mesh and hoping.
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:28 PM
So will this include voice? Because the current 1.16 does… I guess it will? Either way, it will be interesting to see sculpties to go mainstream.
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:30 PM
No Voice?? How does sculpties come before Voice? Ridiculous!
Another great decision by the powers that be…
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:58 PM
What about the folks that still can’t even get to a login screen since 1.14 viewer update? When will this get fixed? Support isn’t doing anything at the moment.
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:59 PM
———————————————————————————-
When are you going to fix the disabled accounts. My main account has been disabled for 13 days now. NO reply from support. And chadrick’s reactivation mechanism did nothing.
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:04 PM
I like the idea of sculpted prims, but I feel that it is moving away from what I love most about second Life, and that is the teaching & learning aspect within SL.
How can you teach someone within SL to make sculpted prims? .. in a nutshell you can’t! Its an external 3D application that is required .. and thus limiting the possibility for everyone to create the textures required.
I would imagine that textures for sculpties will be available by the bucketload within a short timespan, but unless you specifically want something that is already available you won’t be able to create something yourself ‘within’ secondlife.
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:10 PM
We need voice! and more Estate Control Updates! Grr
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:27 PM
@2:
To be perfectly honest, I can live without voice. As it is, I have my speaker muted most (~98%) of the time, because the sound effects would disturb those around me. Imagine what constant chatter would do!
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:32 PM
what? wait, i think that sculpted prims are ready yet, beta was messed up becus of it last time i checked. and that was like…two days ago. >_>
I think its not ready. but i think the voice is or are they going to add that on the 26th.
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:32 PM
I am looking forward to use sculties.. And I hope 1.16 will be more stable on Main grid than the beta grid ( Where it was horrible)
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:33 PM
sry i think the sculpted prims aren’t ready yet*
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:38 PM
less than 700 people voted for voice out of the 40,000+ active residents. Voice is not a priority nor is it needed nor wanted by the vast majority of residents.
But i don’t really care. If voice is in we will see the grid crash horribly over and over and the griefing via voice will become intolerable in unmanaged sims so more and more sims will simply be voice disabled. Voice will be optional after all. Note that press key to activate mic needs to be mandatory. locking voice on is a dumb move. I don’t want to hear you talk unless you are a DJ. And i don’t want to hear what music you have on, the feedback from your listening to the same as me, your bodily functions, your kids crying for your time, your wife screaming at you, etc etc. Voice was an idiotic idea imho. but i am one of many thousands that see the problems (that have nothing at all to do with posers) and don’t want additional complexity added to an already unstable platform and a few hundred want voice so you few hundred have a tooting and belching party and have fun with it.

This fixing of the inventory loss is a wonderful thing, problem is,about a month ago I picked up an entire house full of new furniture and belongings and they all dissapeared. When I figured out what I lost it came to close to 20k in Lindens.Ive gone thru all the proper channels about this problem and no one has been able to help.Ive been sent the notecard with all the little tricks one can use to recover lost items but none of them work for me.When I contacted Susan Ramos, she was kind as always and returned 98 % of her products that I lost of hers, however, the rest of the creators have not been as nice and wonderful.I personally believe that the rest of the creators have been hounded so much for return of lost items that they have almost gone into a hiding mode, even some of their Profile list on the front page not to contact them about lost items. This is a really sad thing,im still out 15k with no hope of recovery….:(
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:53 PM
Oh boy! they are really going to Release this client? Let me ask you was there enough testing before you “FEEL” this is ready to go? Or is this another free look at was released too early? When LLABS releases a new client how long ( or time frame ) is planned before its release? Is the time frame already known when the client makes is appearnce in the beta game? When its will go fully online in the main game? I myself had a ok time in the beta game, but really it was not that great of a experience and its not just about the game being in stress test stage. Like many that “TRIED” to get in in other times the beta game was ” DOWN” and useless. So how could you event “GET” user feed back when more times then less people crashed on “LOG IN” and or failing to log in at all?

@29:
If it merely doubled the range of shout I wouldn’t have as much worry about it, I do appreciate the potential uses of the function, I have plans for it myself, but it is NOT as small an upgrade as you seem to suggest, the range on it is HUGE and does not conform to any simple vector magnitude.
I see a lot of room for abuse, this is a major shift in functionality and design, and should not be taken lightly.
May 22nd, 2007 at 7:12 PM
Actually, I’ve never had a derezz loss, but I’ve had tons of no copy stuff that has disappeared on rez. Including over the last two weeks. It would be nice to fix that.
Oh, and I’ll remember to take all my attachments off this time because with the 1.15 update they all got borked with the UUIDs set to zero.
Glad you’re doing something about IMs, though in VWR-513 there are in fact multiple problems, so which have you fixed? The ones not getting through ie get lost? The lag? The false error messages? The messages that don’t get posted, at any time, let alone within 5 minutes after tp? The window constantly reopening?
It would have been nice if you’d fixed all the borks from 1.14 and 1.15 first before introducing sculpties, and I couldn’t care less about voice. Still I suppose voice might be useful when all the radio streams disappear in a few weeks.
But sculpties are likely to be a big problem. Not only a sudden myriad of really ugly prims (but they’re kewl, they’re only one prim even if ugly), but that’s an extra texture to download, more bandwidth eaten up, and interesting to see what happens when textures are still not properly drawn or keep redrawing even though in cache since 1.14… That’ll be shape and colour changing and redrawing all the time (maybe I can cancel my LSD order).
I’m not sure which will totally crash the grid first: voice + sculpties or the sudden insane rush to get 50k concurrency).
And btw, if you do bork this one up as I fully expect you to, thinking of 1.13, 1.14 and 1.15, please please please, do not rush out any Friday afternoon “fixes”.
Thank you.

For those who worry that this will made gridlock worse, consider this from the FAQ:
>>At a maximum of approximately 1000 vertices, sculpted prims have about the same “rendering weight” as a hollow torus prim. So no, they aren’t more “expensive” to render, and you’ll be able to fill your sim if you like.
May 22nd, 2007 at 7:25 PM
Fixing INV loss: GREAT!
Adding sculpties: Good!
No voice mention: Bad!
What happened to that cool new sky/environment tossed abotu this last week? THAT looked cool!
And for the love of Pete, fix that stupid local chat bug that does not allow me to use my arrows to edit what I’m typing! it still thiks I wanna rotate the viewport!
Oh! a neat idea: add support for that new Scape Navigator for 3d applications from 3d Cinnexion.. I just got one, and LOVE it with google earth!
May 22nd, 2007 at 7:28 PM
Thank you thank you for the splendid sculpties!!
Great work folks.

@ 38 Usagi Musashi - Sheesh, it’s been a whole two weeks on the Beta grid, tons of miniupdates and little versions since, a major change or two (sculpt rotation, parameters), a borked 1.15, a borked 1.15.1, a Friday afternoon borked roll out - of course it’s ready for prime time
Dons tin helmet and sits in fallout shelter….
May 22nd, 2007 at 7:38 PM
Are sculpted prims really ready for prime time this soon? I think perhaps they should undergo another week of testing first. Not that I’m against having them to play with on the main grid mind you.

Well not for everyone……Oh boy figures someone would say this :/
mini updates “laughs!” If people can`t get in at times the beta never gets tested correctly and is the reason why late issues so bad later with the release. Sorry but numbers of testers are more important then fellers ones that can get in.

I can understand both sides of the issue with sculpties.
One one side, one of the things I thought was quite neat about SL was that it leveled the playing field quite a bit for content creation. I’ve made objects for sale for Poser people, and that takes some significant software to do well. In SL, you didn’t have to know how to use Maya, know about NURBS or UV mapping, etc. You could just grab and build. With the arrival of sculpties, I feel that the balance will shift heavily toward the pros.
On the other, SL cannot survive if it does not update to more and better performance over time. If they don’t do it, another virtual world will, and that would not be good for SL.
It’s a fine line to walk between accessibility and functionality. I don’t envy the Lindens at all on this choice.
Thank you for the new stuff and the attempts to improve

Does this rollout fix the borked classified search too? Can’t search without a keyword! No way to browse without plugging in a word.

@40-Zimmy:
Sculpties were rigged up by Qarl Linden in a way that ensures the load it imposes per-prim on the grid is theoretically the same as that of prims that rely on only numbers to get their visual detailing across.
Theoretically - it’s one thing to build a prim that rezzes all its detail based on data that’s innately part of the prim’s description, and another to rez one that requires a texture map call up. It will be interesting to see the effects of sculpties on live grid…
May 22nd, 2007 at 9:43 PM
/me attempts to get a word in before Usagi and Ann Otoole fill up yet another blog entry :p
I hardly play SL now because of all the bugs and the incoming crap of ID validation but it does seem LL are really giving it their all now. I logged in a few days ago was suprised with having most of my invo still there, and TP’s working 95% of the time. Granted it took a good few mins to rez everything (8mb line, before people try blame my connection, I’m probably alot further away from the servers than some) so that in it’s self is a great improvment
Might even think of re-investing if everything goes well
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:04 PM
I don’t suppose the “no textures found” bug when using the build tools has been fixed??? This bug is reproducible on the Beta grid and has been reported in the JIRA, but all we’ve been told is “Hasn’t made it to a public release yet, but we hope to get it out soon!” Does that mean we have a mandatory upgrade tomorrow and the bug is still in 1.16.0???? Please tell me otherwise. Builders across the grid will have a heck of a time getting any work done, myself included. >:-(

Still having issues with friends list not showing correct status, also Friends list not updating when freind(s) log off.
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 PM
ok grow… that was uncalled for. i haven’t been posting much and what i post is legitimate constructive criticism or very positive praise for a great product.
But since you asked for it…
nahhh… i won’t be baited into your flame raging.
i really don’t care about voice. i do wish they had it so there was no way to keep the mic on. i really don’t want to hear bodily functions, kids crying for attention from sl addicts, angry spouses yelling, etc. but overall i don’t care about voice unless voice cause grid problems.
Don’t like voice? disable it.
I’m all for sculpties although it means i get to turn on the fountain of youth again and learn new graphics software. yes folks, learning stimulates your brain to produce stem cells and stem cells keep you young (to a degree). does it bug me that i developed these skills and now have to learn new skills? a bit. no rest for the wicked. but i can easily predict we will see some wicked new products in sl very soon. so sculpties are a good thing.
however, a hiatus from updates is needed. LL needs to halt introduction of any code unless it is a fix for a security vulnerability.
LL needs to put some money into the beta grid. they have declared they are profitable. therefore they can afford it. And they need to “hire” dedicated beta testers that know what they are doing. maybe even compensate them for the time somehow. LL needs 10,000 beta testers minimum. and the beta testers need to be capable of executing unit testing. on and on i could go with a detailed strategy and operational plan but why bother? LL has shown zero inclination to adhere to any proven SQA and SCM methodologies. Jira is a great step and more people need to be involved there. But testing needs to be expanded on an immense scale and it will require an immense effort and investment to pull it off.
Here’s to hoping tommorrow goes well and no issues are introduced: *tips glass of iced tea* (sorry i don’t use alcohol)
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:18 PM
Wings 3d is rumored to have a nicer user interface and a reasonable sculpty import script, and it’s free like Blender.
You can put one texture on the whole object by opening the editor on the object and dragging the texture from your inventory to the texture square on the texture tab without having “select texture” radio button clicked.
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Hmm, everybody is so excited about sculpties, but these things are quite limited.
I think there might be quite a few shapes that will be very hard to create(maybe even impossible).
I also think that “non-sculpted linkset to single sculpted prim” might take a while to show up. And if and when it does show up it might not work for linked sets that have holes in them.
May 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 PM
Thanks for fixing a few of the bugs.
Can anybody tell me if there are other people still being affected by the intermittent but frequent problem of being unable to texture all the faces of a cube at the same time without getting a “Multiple” texture message coming up? Please IM me if you know of a bug report for this so I can add my name to it. Despite being told that this is known about, I have been unable to find a bug report anywhere.
Good luck with the ypgrade later.

llRegeonSay cannot be used on channel 0 so no it cannot be used to spam you as someone asked. Also it should FAR more than merely double the shout distance. It should be anywere in the regeon up to 760 meter s(It better be, wiki is not specific).
And no voice? THANK YOU. Maybe some of your are excited about voice but it is a COMPLICATED feature that frankly still has some major problems. It is a GOOD THING that it was not relesed. LL obviously recognised that it needs a lot more consideration and given that the sculpties are pretty basic and there were several other nice bug fixes, it seem slike a very sensible descision to not release voice at this time. (Well asuming that not mentioning voice actually means it’s out

Sculpties will be no use for 99.9999% of the population, until SL has its own editor for them, and it is simple to use. We don’t all have access to a thousand dollar piece of software.

Amazing progress, I just hope that the issues I was having in the beta grid are resolved (you know I filed a crash report every single time : ). I am pretty excited to see what this new technology will bring to the table in the coming months. On the other hand I really hope you guys pull this off because on the surface it seems like you have executed a beautiful plan to make SecondLife a new frontier once again.

Why is the usual feature list missing?
Anything on it you don’t want to show, like verification by Integrity?
Sculpties are nice for a lot of people with expensive programs (or who have bought a cheap hacked copy from an auction…). For most of the residents it’s simply useless without an own editor inworld.
llRegionSay is a good point at all… this may reduce the need of relay scripts reducing scripting in a region. As this ist no “killer application”, it may reduce lag by 0,5%
Awaiting the usual badly tested update fixing five bugs and bringing up ten new ones it may be a good idea to stop transactions for some days……….

I have a question vaguely related to sculties, I am a model and photographer. I struggle about unsightly curves on av when posing, tipical knees and arms folded shows angles in place of curves (without to speak about more women specific curves…). In fact the AV griddle should have more detail, is that something that can be developped? It will give a more detail shape and as you have high quality skin, you would have high quality shapes? Am I talking about something possible, difficult? about something ppl would like? I would, I normally get my pictures down in Photoshop and have to make corrections before reloading them in SL. Oh, and flexy hair should not go “through” av but “around” the shape, some many things, sorry to ramble.

Broccoli, what des Photoshop cost? Thats the tool for clothing - I hear no demands for a free graphics software for budding content creators.

Wings 3d is free, and has a great sculpt import/export - MORE features than Maya for sculpties.
all you need to bring is your brain, oh wait… some people are too lazy to exercise that. Oh well
May 23rd, 2007 at 12:22 AM
SCULPTIES! w00t! Congratulations on the rollout!
For the people complaining about the cost of Maya, I think that it also works with the free program Blender.
It’s great to see progress like this in spite of all the whining from various sources. Sculpties can really improve the visual quality of the world, while at the same time decreasing prim counts - wonderful! I can’t wait to see what the many artists of SL produce with this

@53 gesh its bad enough you IM people in game. So why not just close it and get a life. If people can`t post their sl name and instead hide and insult people. Then maybe people liek this remarks so be ignored and removed fromt he blog totally. Now be a good boy and mommy might give you a cookie. Stupid people
May 23rd, 2007 at 12:23 AM
Ooh, this is one of the best updates ever for me i think. Sculpties are exciting and I always wanted something like llRegionSay.
If it goes without problems… Way to go Lindens!!!

@56 let the little kids have their fun. because their parents never taught them any manners to start with. Sooner of later we will lose the blog because of their brainless and less then 1 IQ insults of people.

May 23rd, 2007 at 12:35 AM
Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Group IMs fixed…
Like a long awaited dream come true!
TY LL I love ya!!
Just to check though… will this fix make my messages transmit AND allow me to close a chat without it reopening with every message????
Like the idea of sculpties, no idea how to make them but we all have to start somewhere!!!
/me dances around planning how to keep busy for 6 hours without biting nails!

What about the leaks in the client that we have seen since 1.15.1 was released (before 1.15.1 this was not an issue), will that be fixed too? …Or do i need to get a spare HD just in case the leak messes up my HD… or kills it? Right now it’s like my pagefile keeps getting full everytime i run SL and i have disk access like hell (excuse my language) . My only option to keep this in control is to restart my PC every time i exit SL

I’m really unsure where to put this.. it’s FEEDBACK on a GUI change. in beta 1.16.0 (105), a new unified Local Chat, IM, and Voice console was introduced, named “chatterbox”.
It’s REALLY hard to use. The “Near me” tab doesn’t blink when people in the local area chat. Likewise, the window has limited resizing available due to features on the new “My Friends” tab.
Over the last six months, I’ve learned to keep my IM window wide and short along the top, and the “History” window short and fat in the bottom left corner. Now I can’t do that. IM and history have become one and the same window. The voice features take up a large area in the “near me” tab, rendering the chat history nearly useless. And if you dare switch to an IM tab, local chat begins appearing below the history window (the entire reason I leave the history window open is to eliminate this scrolling text all over my work)
You guys sprung this new feature on us on tuesday evening.. and I really have to say, it’s NOT READY to be added to the release tomorrow (gods I hope you see this). there is WAY TO HUGE potential for “wrong window” issues.. and even running at 1280×960, the “chat” window now takes up nearly 1/6 of my screen at all times.
Please please please… this chat window concept needs a lot of work. There’s some promise there, but it’s SO not ready for prime time.

Great that short notice announcement as ppl making appointments with each other, NOT!!! As in every new release, I will awaiting a lot of troubles logging in. And please don’t mention an endtime of 12pm cause every time you will come with the message that something has unexpected going wrong after a new release. Why don’t release updates at night or quiet times and not bother ppl during play? Again thank you for your Linden LOVE, as I expected estimated time of ending is 1pm or even 2pm. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! for bugging op my fun again. :((((

um
any fix on the inventory search situation?
you can upload a brand new texture into your inventory and it wont show up either named in the search field or otherwise.
Same goes for current items already extant in your inventory.
Might wanna add that in to stuff thats busted up bad and needs fixin ASAP
And thanks for scrapping the ability to see pics and access links on the classifieds page on stipend day.
Just what SL ARE you guys “in charge” of? seriously, the borkification of that could have waited until during downtime, when nobody can go in world to shop any dang way.
May 23rd, 2007 at 1:49 AM
And I couldn’t care less about voice, and others with me I think. I love music without chatter from ppl. Sometimes even this awfull gestures Spamming bothers me a lot during great music. Please release good working updates once a month and not crappy updates once a week. This is the last thing I say about this updating thing from Linden. You Linden ppl don’t listen to your SL citizens, so why do I bother complaining. Well, just so. GRRRRR!!!
May 23rd, 2007 at 1:54 AM
I tried to download beta voice via http://secondlife.com/community/bhear.php but unable to, it tells me “You are not authorized to view this page”.
Is Beta voice down or is the download page moved?
May 23rd, 2007 at 1:57 AM
Excellent, nice one LL - this all sounds totally fantasic.
As some people say, there may be a few “judders” after the update but I think a few hours (or days) pain is a price I am willing to pay if it solves inventory loss!
Does the “loss protection” work the other way around too, ie, when rezzing a no-copy object from inventory to world? Or is it simply “derez” only, when taking an object back? Either way it’s good.
Although “rez loss” would be a useful thing too, when rezzing a no-copy item from inventory to world… I’ve lost a few things that way
Anyway, once again… nice work LL and hope it goes well. See folks…. they do listen!

Sculpted prims, havn’t even tested them out on the beta, they better be impressive
This is an SL dream of mine, never thought it would come out so soon though or at all!

#76 - you can MUTE people
May 23rd, 2007 at 2:08 AM
Finally I know where those items went I lost lately….and still miss them. Well, only about 1500L$ :o) So I appreciate the (hopefully) increasing stability of the system. As for voice: I don’t really need it, and regarding the lag already experienced in hig usage times, I doubt it will lead to a better second world. VoIP might be a nice feature for peer-to-peer communication - but this can be done outside SL if really necessary. Not all nice-to-have features are really an improvement. The new sculpted prims may be an improvement - if they lower the prim rate and thus decrease data volume to be processed.
One missing feature in my eyes is to get to know who sends textures or notecards, as a friend got a spamming victim and doesn’t know how to address it when the sender is unknown….
So thanks LL for continously improving - even if I paid my price for learning about bugs…
May 23rd, 2007 at 2:09 AM
@ Wendy #76
I would prefer weekly updates, rather than monthly. Reason…. simply it means bugs are solved more quickly, and issues fixed more quickly rather than having to wait a whole month.
@ Wendy #74
Updates are done when LL has maximum staff available - simple, common sense. Besides, it’s not night for everyone at the same time
so simply, someone, somewhere is going to be disturbed. I am GMT, and totally agree with LL’s update policy
and guys…. don’t worry about the new update, client and lack of notice, it’ll be fine… probably
/me dismisses all the doubters

So yea,
76 - I think there is choice via preferences to have voice active meaning you yourse (ofcourse) don’t have to talk anyway NEITHER hear what other people have to say!
Updates are more so every fortneight not every week. Most online games have frequent updates. Gesture spamming can be avoided - mute; not LL’s problem. Stop B’ing.
75 - I agree. When I search an item by it’s exact name it won’t show up. If I delete the last letter of the item’s name it shows up!?
For example, I want to search for my ‘Piggy’
I type in Piggy into my search box
“Searching…
Item could not be found”
So now I change the word ‘Piggy’ to ‘Pigg’ and…
THERE IT IS!
‘Piggy’
(Note: Piggy was just an example, this happens with all items w/ whatever name!)
What’s up with that?
Also notecards have changed? When I create my own notecard it asks me to keep instead of save, so once I write on the notecard I click ‘Keep’ and it asks me to save, so I save. BUT the notecard is still there with the options ‘Keep’ and ‘Discard’. So I click ‘Keep’ again and it returns to my inventory. Shouldn’t the button change to ‘Save’ instead of ‘Keep’ and ‘Discard’ again?
I also have problems searching textures via my texture search in EDIT, I think this is due to the texture being set certain perms, for example no transfer. I had the texture sent to me by another person with full perms and it appeared. This was a while ago, I still experience it now and again, so it may not occur all of the time.
Also customer support or technical support.
I was having a problem with my edit settings, the rotating tool was not working - I couldn’t see the white scale so I could snap to the grid. I thought this was a bug, so I contacted a Linden via IM, but I was told to file a bug report. This was poor. Why? Because it was not a BUG, it was a simple options box that all I had to do was TICK to solve the problem. Reporting ‘bugs’ helps Linden Labs, but not even the bug report explains whether it really was a bug report and whether it was resolved etc, or a mishap via your client, li
