@96

It isn't the fact that something went wrong with the update (although like @97 i find it hard to understand how a bug like this could have crept in if the code was well constructed and managed), but that anyone in the industry knows if you roll out a patch, you have to anticipate something may go wrong however well you test and have the resources and plans in place to tackle things if problems do happen - you don't roll out a patch last thing on a Friday, and then when you find a problem just shrug and go home anyway...

@98 - 3D worlds may be new ground (although they aren't they've been around for over 10 year), virtual societies may be new ground (actually that's debatable too). but good software design and engineering, and good service practice when applying updates are not new ground. There are tried and trusted methodologies which others use to reduce the impact of this sort of thing.

It's obvious that LL don't understand their own code.
It must be horribly written, that no one in there has a real understanding the repercussions of changing a line of code in one place.

The real issue is not the particular embugment in this instance.
The issue is that one of their programmers could just as easily have changed something that had unintentional massive repercussions for everyone. It's a lottery. Throw a line of code in there and sort of pray!

I've been creating software for more years than many of you have been alive.
I've written really awful buggy stuff in my time I have to admit. Mostly when I was starting out. :)
BUT , I can't imagine just how incredibly messed up and unstructured the LL code must be. Spaghetti code may be too kind a word for it.
It's a major accident waiting to happen.

I just hope to gawd that there's a team working on a properly controlled near-total rewrite.

@Quiet Sinatra: My thoughts EXACTLY. What pi**es me of far more than any bugs is that constant whining on the blog.

@Simba Fuhr: Dann wäre es auch hilfreich, sich im Deutschen ein bisschen mehr Mühe mit Rechtschreibung, Zeichensetzung, Stil etc. zu geben. BESONDERS wenn man sich an eine Firma wendet.

@Amy Faddoul: Another thing that annoys me a lot-people just don't read the blog, they read a few words and somehow imagine the rest of it...rolling restart? "MAJOR UPDATE, they'll break everything again!" Talk about self-fulfilling prophecies here.

Oh, and I actually lost something from my inventory right after buying and trying to rez the box DAYS ago, which had NOTHING to do with the restart on Friday. So? Sh*t happens. I told the creator and got a replacement.

Unfortunately my inventory item is gone, not misplaced. I was in the process of taking something that I had put on the floor in my own home. A rolling restart warning interupted the process and the item never showed up in my inventory. Searched the house, the land, my inventory, nothing!

It's not misplaced, it's GONE. 900 Lindens down the drain thanks to a rolling restart. Priceless.

Monday. I guess this confirms customer service is very limited on the weekends. I have noted that on Sundays SL tends to slow down regarding performance. I'm sure LL is aware that they need to increase staff. So I won't state the obvious.

"It is expected that we will not be able to address the issue until Monday and apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks to those who sent bug reports and used the Public Jira to bring this issue to our attention!"....Its just that in 2007 in internett you run a 24/7 service 365 dayas a yare. If you even considder to get in RL companies to SL you must run a complete 24/7-365 Tech service....Even small inrernett businesses that provides a service got tech ppl stand by.

I have been observing this Updates thing for a while and I have to say, LL has sure a real hard job to keep everything as smooth as possible in such a complex plataform and I think they are giving their best since this is their baby creation...BUT.. they may dismiss the incredible responsabilitity behind it since its a World it deals with real Money so as they get Money for it aswell.. so many casual Players may miss what actually happens around them.. anyway.. with such a responsability behind it backs, Over the Weekend Support should be really there.
