llGiveInventoryList bug

Friday, May 18th, 2007 at 7:20 PM by: Blue

Since the rolling restart we received reports of the llGiveInventoryList function not performing as intended and have confirmed that its functionality is impaired. Instead of an object’s contents being copied to a new folder in inventory, the items are placed by type, ie. notecards in the Notecard folder, objects in the Object folder etc. and clothing is immediately worn.

Inventory is not being lost, just misplaced. Please use the Recent Items tab in your inventory to quickly find these mis-sorted items.

It is expected that we will not be able to address the issue until Monday and apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks to those who sent bug reports and used the Public Jira to bring this issue to our attention!

Ummm, you know, you just KILLED shopping in SL until Monday with this right?

  2. 2 Javier Puff Says:

This is a pretty damn serious issue. I know our store is affected heavily, I’m sure many others are as well. Lots and lots of people are going to be confused and think they’ve been ripped off when items don’t go where they belong. Rather than have the incompetent developer(s) who caused this serious issue stay there on a friday night and fix what they broke, you are letting them go home and tossing this onto the shoulders of the innocent people in your world.

I don’t think it’s unfair for us to expect a little bit more professionalism than what you’ve been providing us lately, do you?

  3. 3 That DeFarge Says:

    Roll back please!

  4. 4 JohnnyB Allen Says:

why can’t text be locked in one place or another? everytime we IM we have to move the pointer to the main screen to move then down to chat then back to IM then to screen then IM then to Chat then to screen Then to IM then to screen then to IM then to chat then…. are ya feeling me yet?
just default text to chat or something at least allow us to choose a lock! spend a LOT less time working on qsprt3 sychappmode b7ypassovverides and put some simplification in the UI!!!

  5. 5 Nite Page Says:

Only if you don’t know how to edit a package, and manually drag and drop things into inventory, Jaxx.

  6. 6 Ran Bright Says:

Well, not really, its a notice so you can be notified that when you open a package, drag the contents to a new folder instead of clicking “copy to inventory”. I believe we are all mature beings and can easily be less impulsive and refrain from clicking the easy way for 4 days.

  7. 7 Martini Says:

    (1) It will if you sell things that contain prims, clothes, notecards etc all from the same box.

I’m bracing myself for the IMs….” I bought this and can’t find it in my inventory”.

I think this deserves a little higher priority than “It is expected that we will not be able to address the issue until Monday”

  8. 8 Reb Says:

    Monday???

    That’s a joke right!

  9. 9 RH Engel Says:

This will not be fixed until Monday??!!!!!!
The weekends are the busiest time for shoppers. Now we as owners will have tons of IMs to answer trying to explain where to look………
Thanks so much for the help Linden Labs.

    Monday??…………*sigh!!!!!!!!!”

  10. 10 Tigerlily Koi Says:

Jaxx perfectly summed it up. This has huge implications to business owners. I do not understand how this is not a first priority. Waiting through the weekend to fix something that affects this many people is all kinds of wrong.

  11. 11 Lorelei Mission Says:

I dunno, Jax… the “recent items” tab is quick & easy — I always check it right after a purchase anyway.

  12. 12 Alyssa Bijoux Says:

or killed the merchants who will be inundated with IMs about lost contents :(

  13. 13 Ran Bright Says:

It is easy, copy this blog’s URL, send the link with a smile and “apologies”. Everyone can read. At least those that play sl.

  14. 14 Tigerlily Koi Says:

With the optional viewer, nothing shows up correctly in searching inventory (I searched Calla in my own inventory today and it found NOTHING) and the recent tab doesn’t show any items at all until you change the sort method a few times.

With purchases not showing in a folder, but going to System Folders, anything purchased will be all over inventory. Like inventories aren’t enough of a disaster anyway.

    *sigh* Monday is completely ridiculous.

  15. 15 Rob A Says:

I’ve gradually distancing myself more and more from SL, despite the fact that I really like the idea of SL and the way things are *supposed* to work. Unfortunately, they rarely do, and I get constant lag issues within 5 minutes of logging in, if not sooner. This may just be the straw that breaks the avatar’s back. What makes you people think this is acceptable customer service? Try talking to CCP games in Iceland. They may have a different way of doing things or whatever, but for their games which I play they can sustain 40k concurrent logins without a tenth the lag I get in SL with 10k people online. Next!

  16. 16 Arsheba Nasu Says:

What? Recent Items tab DOESN’T EVEN SHOW items copied from container inventory. Everyone KNOWS that. It SHOULD, but it hasn’t worked as expected for a very long time. This is really intolerable.

  17. 17 Jack Hathor Says:

Not again is it, then PLEASE dont do updates on friday no more, if you cant staff development over weekends, or at least get decent support. Thats not a good way of dealing with us, the load will be on the vendorowners, you install a bug, you report it, and you run off

  18. 18 Patchouli Woollahra Says:

Only because interactions in there are a subset of what SL is capable of. When you can cache world content well in advance and change only a few details when necessary, the effects of lag and bandwidth become less significant.

Please do us a favor and don’t compare SL to any conventional MMO, you’re only going to look like a idiot for comparing apples to oranges.

  19. 19 Denalis Says:

This is extreamly poor customer service at best. This is a huge bug that already has cause a great deal of people hours of trouble. Thousands of people thinking thier items aren’t getting delivered and all complaining to the creators. On top of that some items aren’t so easy to piece back together. A shirt is one thing but some items in this game contain both objects, scripts, sounds animations and notecards that all are getting dispearsed among your inventory now for you to try and piece back together.

This is completely unprofessional of Linden Labs. A bug this big “should” have been caught before, but letting it slip is one thing, not fixing it for 3 days is another. Not to mention the irresponsible action of patching on a friday night and then leaving for the weekend? Are you freekin serious?

  20. 20 Mike Crosley Says:

You’re kidding, right? Is this even tested before its done? And yes, Jack Hathor is right, who does a public release on a Friday? Why don’t you just wait until next week and make us wait until TUESDAY after Memorial Day weekend?

GET SOME FREAKING DECENT QA TEAM or give it up!

  21. 21 Bucky Barkley Says:

Sorry you had to deliver bad news such as that Blue, I know it can’t be fun.

This is a pretty bad one to let go over the weekend. LL needs some adult management that is not afraid to say “look, this has to get fixed ASAP”. It’s a pretty big stage at this point for the folks at Sansome and Green to just punt like this.

  22. 22 ONE PO'd RESIDENT Says:

lets just say again BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE do you all realize how bad u hurt businesses with all these bugs not that you all care but i dont think you would like it if ur paychecks all dropped by half evey otehr week cus ur bosses didnt fix teh bug in the paycheck printing machines THINK ABOUT IT and give us the service we all PAY for here

  23. 23 Wolfgang Fapp Says:

“..Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine…fine…” - R.E.M

  24. 24 Digital Digital Says:

I don’t understand why they have to wait until Monday lol

  25. 25 That DeFarge Says:

@4 - except my recent items doesn’t work now either….

  26. 26 Livinda Goodliffe Says:

Okies, I’ll deal with things…have a nice weekend.

  27. 27 Vx Shaw Says:

    UNBELIEVABLE!

You roll out an update with the potential of this sort of problem then head home for the weekend?

Has anyone at LL heard of OVERTIME? You are actually going to leave a hundred thousand people hanging all weekend?

    unbelievable…just unbelievable.

  28. 28 Oz Spade Says:

“It is expected that we will not be able to address the issue until Monday and apologize for the inconvenience.”

This is why deploying new things on a Friday is a “Bad Idea”.

  29. 29 Ann Otoole Says:

i didn’t even have to see this blog to have figured it out on my own. as customer ask i will explain. yes will be a pain.

i hope LL learns they need someone like me cracking the whip to ensure software engineering methodologies around version control, such as version trees and making sure you don’t miss something basic, are adhered to and all those developers too lazy to follow the disciplines of a software engineer find a paycheck elsewhere.

  30. 30 pizzaguy Clutterbuck Says:

Give LL a break they are trying to fix this stuff. its not like they do this on purpose. Mike, they probably do test it but they cant test everything. there are billions of different situations that would have to be tested in order to find most of them and even then some will probably still be there.

and even with tons of IMs just copy one response and when ever you get an IM ctrl+v it into the IM.

and dont forget, its not like the buyers arnt going to get what they bought. they are just going to get it spread out.

  31. 31 Anthony Hocken Says:

I think Linden Labs have underestimated the importance of this bug. This is a CRITICAL bug that needs fixing ASAP. Most vendors in Second Life will now be broken until next week. Who decided to update every server on the grid on a Friday! Madness. Thanks a bunch.

  32. 32 Martini Says:

Let’s all recognize that these things are going to happen.

Let’s also realize that that to some degree we have to accept some problems in an evolving system like this. Yes QA would help but problems will still occur.

I’m making up notecards of explanation to answer the “I’ve lost my purchase” problem. It will help a little.

All that having been said I am still surprised that no fix is being considered before Monday despite the possible gravity of the problem.

Let’s hope that “It is expected that” is a pessimistic prediction.

  33. 33 Patchouli Woollahra Says:

Ann: Software development methodologies are not a guarantee against issues in software, or a instant panacea, especially in complex code. All it can do is reduce the damage it causes. WRT your comment on Linden Labs reqiring you, I would suggest sending your resume to Linden Labs to apply for the relevant position.

  34. 34 Stephe Erhler Says:

Can you PLEASE send this info out as an in world notice so I don’t spend all weekend explaining to people where the items they just bought have gone? This is going to be a nightmare.

And I also agree doing an update on friday afternoon, when you know you’re not under any circumstance going to work on the weekend to fix whatever problems you create, is an insane practice. I’ve been actively trying to bring RL companies into SL and this sort of unprofessional behaviour isn’t going to convince anyone this is the “web 3.0″.

Stephe Ehrler, who might pull all my vendors down just so I don’t have to deal with this headache.

  35. 35 Anthony Hocken Says:

@pizzaguy, oh, they didnt mean to break it? Well that’s okay then! No lessons learned. Feel free to do more updates on Fridays Linden Labs, because even if you break important things, we know you meant well.

Plus if they adjusted code that could be connected with giving inventory items, this is one of the most obvious things to test. It’s just ridiculous on a huge scale. Large projects like this isnt easy, but its not voodoo either.

  36. 36 Calin McKinney Says:

The best customer service I have ever dealt with in my 40 years on planet earth is with American Express. Polite, courteous, professional, respectful…a good model to learn from.

By the way, I did receive excellent phone support from Linden Labs from Lightfoot Linden a few months ago! He knows how to take care of customers!!

  37. 37 Magi Merlin Says:

NOT GOOD ENOUGH - MONDAY TOO FAR AWAY

An issue that causes inventory loss or misplacement deserves a lot better attention than “..we will have to wait til Monday..”

Page the development team - pay the overtime and get it fixed - if there truly were no client or server software changes during last weeks maintaince then the cause is probably a minor config setting anyway - so get a techie involved!

WE PAY REAL HARN EARNED MONEY FOR OUR ASSETS

We deserve better than “Wait until Monday”

    Sincerely,

    Mad Magi Merlin.
    (Mad not Crazy)

  38. 38 Nobody Fugazi Says:

    (1) Yeah, updates on a Friday are *always* a bad idea. I’m pretty sure that someone said that at a meeting somewhere. If they were afraid to say it out loud… What is done is done, so let us just leave this with the lesson that Updates On Friday are Bad.

    (2) llGiveInventory being broken does not mean that stores are busted for the weekend. Guess what? Prim sales still work. Sure, it sucks about the vendors that depend on llGiveInventory, but… if the vendor is only giving one thing instead of a folder, there should be no confusion. It goes into the… objects folder. Where it usually goes.

    (3) Between (1) and (2), there is some disconnect. First, I’m not certain that LL understands the importance of the bug to store owners - but I’m also not sure that store owners have done the right thing by depending on functionality without some form of redundancy. Come on. Expect things to break, and plan for it.

  39. 39 Klang Wopat Says:

I realize that this is not a Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 1540 8) application–planes will not fall from the sky, ships will not run aground, and no one will die or be injured.

But I do have to second those who have made comments here outlining the foolishness of rolling out an update on a Friday, and then leaving any problems that need to be fixed until Monday. If changes need to be made on Friday, than be prepared to work the problem over the weekend.

You all seem very dedicated, so I don’t understand why some staff aren’t in to clean this up on a Saturday.

I’ve actually read and considered your Systems Engineer and Project Manager job announcements, and thought you hit the nail on the head with the descriptions and requirements for these positions. I’d like to get involved, but can’t move at this time. Were you able to hire anyone to fill these positions?

Hiring qualified professionals to fill positions like these might go a long way towards avoiding problems like this–a minor technical problem that has a major impact on your customer base.

At any rate, I’m sticking. It’s tough out on the event horizon, I appreciate that problems come up.

  40. 40 Susie Boffin Says:

It could be worse. They could have started the new identity theft program on top of this enhancement.

  41. 41 Bionic Merlin Says:

If you could just address the problem of the “hourglass from Hell” (computer totally frozen) and the spontaneous reboots, I’d be oh so happy. I can’t be the only person experiencing these symptoms.

  42. 42 Ann Otoole Says:

i love it when somebody tries to talk down to me by stating the blatantly obvious. LL doesn’t hire the type of people required as it is against the tao of linden to follow any proven methodologies.

  43. 43 Iexo Bethune Says:

Well isn’t this a lovely case of bug and run? Just thought I’d pop in here, being as I just crashed anyway. Not to change the subject, by the way, but is there a reason why, when I crash, I’m penalized with having to wait 20 minutes to log in again? I bug reported and everything… Right, I’ll just sit here then.

  45. 45 Nate T Says:

Sigh, I noticed this glitch, wasn’t sure if it was the vendor or a SL bug. But why are these releases not put through an observed testing period? It just came out of nowhere with the grid-wide rolling update. Well, I’m glad it wasn’t something much more serious, but I don’t exactly feel comfortable with whatever closed testing process is going on with each update we’re getting, or maybe it’s just me.

  46. 46 Cappy Frantisek Says:

I only have one thing that uses this function so it’s not a big deal for me, but I feel everyone’s pain. I can’t but help to wonder what else is broken and won’t be fixed till Monday. Thanks to all the posted this on the JIRA. For you nay sayers that won’t take the time to learn the JIRA, it does work. Only it works on LL schedule.

To LL, if you are going to have 24/7 access to the grid and will be doing updates outside the normal Wednesday times (which everyone knows about) then I would make the humble sugesstion to hire a 24/7 workforce. Wouldn’t it be a shame if the colo only had support from 9-5 Monday through Friday? Now that would be a disaster.

  47. 47 Dementhe Paravane Says:

MMm, Really effected my remodel effort - wonder why my sexgen platinum Astral Bed disappeared - no kidding. That really sucks to the tune of 10,000L. I want to know how to find it - not in my inventory, not in my trash, not in my objects, not in the folder best bed. etc. Shall I go on. This really suck.

  48. 48 Magi Merlin Says:

    OM F’ing G

I just read the previos blog entry

    YOU DID WHAT???????

Honestly, only a fool would deploy a major server update (or any %$#^# update) late on a Friday afternoon on a system who’s busiet time is the Weekend - at least not without sufficient resources to address any emergent issue that may arise.

I pity the mechants and the nubies - it will be retail hell for them this weekend.

Linden Labs should by all accounts be making enough cash outa this cow to afford a “follow the sun” approach to technically services with a team in the US, EU and AU available to provide quality technical and developmental support and critical issue resolution.

    **** _AGAIN_I_SAY__-__MONDAY_IS_TOO_FAR_AWAY_!!!

If the team on duty can’t solve the issue get on the phone and find someone who can - and if they say it’ll will be OK till Monday remind them that all the weekend shopping (and the resulting economic activity) will be effected - why should thousands of merchants suffer so they can have a day off - if they still refuse then call King Phil - and while you got him on the phone tell him I bought a rocking chair from HIM and it aint in my Recent Items and it ain’t in my Objects - Feel free to check my trancaction history to confirm payment.

  49. 49 Jak Digital Says:

Absolutely Mickey Mouse guys… Another brilliant move by LL.

Business as usual, make one fix to only create a larger one. Nice work guys.. God, all weekend is gonna be busy. Nice that LL doesnt have to work over the weekend because of this - but guess wat?? I do!!! Get real guys… I though I heard it all…

  50. 50 KS Says:

Use the recent tab? Too bad it doesn’t work… I haven’t had items show up in recent tab since Wed.

  51. 51 Magi Merlin Says:

Anne (25), sometimes the bleeding obvious needs to be stated

DO NOT DO UPDATES ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON

The deployment team should be spending Friday afternoons in the pub doing post mortems on the deployment they did on Wednesdays - not in the server room pushing out code that stuffs up everyone’s (ok exageration - many peoples) weekend trading.

    Enuf Sed

I think I will give SecondLife a miss this weekend and go to the pub myself - anyone up for a beer and a game of non-virtual pool?

  52. 52 nika talaj Says:

I agree that rolling out updates on Friday afternoon is inexcusably bizarre release management, but be assured that if they are planning to roll out a fix ON Monday, people WILL be working over the weekend. Somebody has to make the fix … check it into the tree … build … smoke test … etc.. All before Monday morning, when QA gets in and finishes up the regression. Then they have to package the update and roll it out … actually I’m a little worried that they are attempting a fix by Monday … but really they have no choice.

  53. 53 Annabelle Vandeverre Says:

Um, Lindens? I’m sure you really were trying to help us by deploying the updates with the region restarts on a Friday afternoon. You probably figured that what you were fixing was important enough not to wait until next week.

I appreciate that, but, I will agree with some of the previous posters - SL has grown to the point where you should hire people or pay them overtime to work on this stuff on the weekends, to keep the masses who keep your company running happy. If businesspeople have difficulties with distributing their merchandise this weekend, they’re going to sell less and have more hassles, decreasing the amount of money that they’re willing or able to pay you.

  54. 54 Alex1 Richardson Says:

Guys come on, LL is trying its best, they provide a service, if you dont like it, leave.

Yes, i said it, THEY provide the service, this is a GAME, which means they can cancel it at any time.

Would anyone like to try having a game like Second Life and having to hear all this shi* all day?

  55. 55 Oki Di Says:

okay, you guys sound like a bunch of horribly spoilt children.

if you like this game, take its existence itself as a gift. sure, LL has made blunders big & small - though whether or not carelessly, they were still never intentional. i could understand an outcry if personal safety was an issue, but being forced to use the search bar in the inventory window is hardly comparable.

if you don’t like, or feel as though you can’t trust the game, then stop playing. walk away from the computer for five freaking seconds, and try the Real Life thing they’ve got going on outside. but i warn you, it’s unstable in the real world too.. so i suggest you GET USED TO IT.

  56. 56 Jak Digital Says:

Alex1 (35) - Wanna buy my investments in the game? Come on man. LOL! Some of us are so far in - we have no choice. This was a bad move - period!! Geez

  57. 57 Kristopher Hudson Says:

Wow, they just said that the inventory is not lost, jsut mis-placed — and they claim they will shut down business for the entire weekend? I’m sorry to gripe about LL’s customer service however note the fact you are griping about having to do the same for your own customers, saying in fact having to answer such service calls is so horrible? You’d be suprised how much business you’d get if you’d just take that time to deal with them kindly - without complaints about it on the blog. When Linden Lab messed up llSetScriptState() bug was introduced a short while ago it rendered a number of my scripts useless for a short while. While a bit tiresome I spent several hours developing rapid work-arounds to bring those scripts back to working order, and in doing so built a loyal customer base investing so much time into my customers. When I hear you people whine about having to help people I just want to keep note of your names and attempt to avoid your products. Turn an annoyance into a good thing and prosper. :)

  58. 58 Tegg B Says:

    Jaxx Tardis Says:
Ummm, you know, you just KILLED shopping in SL until Monday with this right?

Hmm I brought several items today with no problems, was I supposed to stop shopping?

Hey, they are admitting there is a problem and explaining it, thanks Blue Linden for informing us, ignore the whinners who seem to prefer not to know.

    Alyssa Bijoux Says:
or killed the merchants who will be inundated with IMs about lost contents

Or saved them a lot of IM’s from uninformed people too.

  59. 59 Jesseaitui Petion Says:

The only thing that bothers me is not everyone reads the blog..so a large perecntage of OUR customers, will not even get this message.

Maybe we should have some type of “in inventory”mailbox, where Lindens can send IMP messages, like these, to everyone..in a place where they go all the time - their inventory.

  60. 60 Alan Edelman Says:

I wish you guys would just SELL TO IBM and get it over with already - they know how to run a production system! IT’s not your fault you have no clue how to manage this but at least acknowledge this and GET SOMEBODY WHO CAN!

  61. 61 Gillian Waldman Says:

Agree that an in-world message may help avert major headaches for people. I suspect they’re working on a fix now - but let’s face it, Fridays are hard to get people to give up their weekend that late in the day so to speak. Here’s hoping for a quick fix :)

  62. 62 Magi Merlin Says:

    Alex(35):

There are many who have invested thousands of dollars setting up businesses in SecondLife - to them THIS IS NOT A GAME. To anyone taking home a paycheck, be they Lindens or Merchants THIS IS NOT A GAME.

What this is - is a Multi-million dollar (USD not L$) business whether or not you choose to believe it

    ============================

    Nika(33):

I believe it wasn’t seen as important enough to raise the issue til Monday - hopefully the noise on the blog will change that. Otherwise we won’t see a fix til Wednesday at the earliest.

I do agreed with you that they might attempt to push an untested fix out the door ASAP - I just hope they do conduct sufficient QA - some UA would be good too - but most importantly solid unit testing would really help especially with key transaction related code modules.
    ========================================

That said I am off to the pub for a beer.

    All the Best,

  64. 64 Quiet Sinatra Says:

To all the whiners - you are total pathetic losers if this gets your panties all in a wad. So what if they end up in folders for a few days? You own them, you can find them in recent items. God, I can’t believe how many jump on to complain at the least little incident. All you “business people” couldn’t keep a real life company together if this kind of stuff freaks you out. Go crawl back into your holes. Here’s an idea - try to make the best of things and enjoy SL instead of thinking that everything in this Second Life is Life or Death. Is this place a total freak magnet?

  65. 65 Imp Xi Says:

This is a supreme example of exactly why Second Life shouldn’t be under the control of Linden Labs. You guys obviously don’t have enough manpower or talent to eliminate old bugs and prevent new ones.

OPEN-SOURCE THE SERVER AND FOCUS YOUR EFFORTS ON HOSTING SIMS AND KEEPING THE L$ WORTH SPENDING MONEY ON!

Second Life was based on the Metaverse from Snow Crash. The great company that hosted the Metaverse in that book was only concerned with upkeep, and they spent all the money they made on expanding the Metaverse (adding more servers).

With the code open-sourced, bugs would be less likely to surface, and when they DID surface, they’d be eliminated quickly and efficiently. It would allow Second Life to grow beyond your wildest dreams.

We all know Second Life is Mr. Rosedale’s baby… But he needs to realize: it has the potential to become something even greater than it already is… and this is something too important for just one man, or even one company, to undertake.

    Save SL. Open-Source SL.

  66. 66 Coyote Momiji Says:

    Well, uhm, thanks.

Hope you have a better weekend than merchants will. :/

  67. 67 Anthony Hocken Says:

@Quiet Sinatra. Try to get your head around the logistics before discarding everyones concerns.

  68. 68 Coyote Momiji Says:

It’ll be a customer service nightmare for anyone who sells objects unboxed.

  69. 69 Quiet Sinatra Says:

Well Anthony Hocken - has it ended your world? Will suicide be next? Hey move to Iraq or or Darfur to improve your lot. Why don’t you keep some perspective before calling me out?

  70. 70 Ishamel Dagger Says:

Well o well im one of those that cant brose the inventory cause it will switch to notresponding having me to relog forever… thats ok…it only means i can not rp anything in Gor until monday…hmmm the only reason i logged into SL for… Oh well… I guess ill be looking ffwd to monday… by the way i tried uninstalling and re-stalling SL in my Pc…it dosent help anything… Hateful life, Really…

  71. 71 hallo Carter Says:

Although I begrudgingly admire LL for saying ‘kiss my royal patoot and wait until Monday’, it just means I actually have to look for things I buy. Meanwhile might I suggest all of LL go for a beer with Starky Raving Mad Maji Merlin..you might save him from hisself ! it would be worth the trip.

  72. 72 Simba Fuhr Says:

So, now we can try the wonderful LindenLab support:

Schauen Sie sich mal World of Warcraft an.

And LindenLab, dont translate this with google LOL
Use people they can speak more languages. I Think this is no problem for a wotldwide Game… right ?

    Thank you

  73. 73 Andromeda Quonset Says:

What? You are going to wait until Monday? Then you may as well put up a notice on the log-on page that log-ons are limited to support staff until Monday.

  74. 74 Magi Merlin Says:

Hey Quiet Sinatra - If you can’t stand the freaks stay out of the freakin’ side show -

Show some tolerance and consideration for others and perhaps, just maybe, it is you who needs to re-evaluate their perspective.

If you think the issue is trivial then you obviously aren’t affected by it, but why not show a little decently and concern for your fellow members of the human race who are suffering?

I am a professional programmer with over 30 years experience and I can tell when a software vendor is stuffing up by making really silly easily avoidable mistakes. The programmers at Linden Labs take home a paycheck, there is no reason they should not be expected to earn it, just like me.

Personally I am not affected by this bug, other than unthinking inconsiderate people getting my goat up enough to hang here and argue the point instead on enjoying a quiet beer. What I do care about is the real issue here, the ongoing testing and sensible scheduling of software releases to minimise the real harm that can be caused by releasing poorly tested software at inappropriate times.

    ===================

I would also like to add that I have been seeing many improvements in the way the Lindens are, or are planning to be, doing things and I do applaud them for that they have built us a lovely world to play and do business in and they do deserve our heartfelt thanks for that.

THANK YOU LINDENS FOR THIS WORLD YOU HAVE PROVIDED TO US

  75. 75 Coventina Dalgleish Says:

Very interesting I see others are beginning to realize that Linden Labs does not adhere the the ethics of the customer first. I suppose you must keep all of the mis coding individuals happy, how many is that now I don’t think it approaches the customer base.

In IT when something goes wrong on a Friday it becomes an all week ender but then that is a professional organization and of course you must have happy employees. Well if in my control there would be heads on the floor for this bone headed stunt but I am sure the programmers will have a pleasant week end.

Again thank you for living up to expectations

  76. 76 Magi Merlin Says:

    Hey Andromeda @50,

No point, they obviously don’t plan on being here either until Monday!!

  77. 77 Ponk Bing Says:

When do we gat an update to get rid of the whine?

Cut it out, we’re all suckers and we’ll still be here regardless of the problems.

  78. 78 Argus Collingwood Says:

Recent items by date/day does not work now.

  79. 79 Anylyn Hax Says:

    Linking is not working.
1 Prims in 1 meter on from the other and it say they are too far.

  80. 80 Amy Faddoul Says:

Forgive me if I say..Big deal. Ok on that note, Where in that post does it say Major update? Or even update? This has something to do with the rolling restart. Nowhere in this does it say update. Yet everyones flippin out about a “Major Update” on a Friday afternoon. If..And it’s a big if, this is the only problem we have this weekend, Lindenlabs actually put out a good update..Last Weds.

  81. 81 MarmelaGramela Doesburg Says:

Amazing how people here make as major eclat of everything, even problems like this one , that really arent a problem at allm if they could read right. If I was working for LL and had to deal with all this uproar for nothing , I’d probably move on to a quiet job..like in the IRS or so…

  82. 82 Brett Finsbury Says:

wow I got lucky did see a timeout message rezzing new items but they always showed up. would have liked to have known this in world and not until I ended up crashing on a tp after i risked a few purchases.
Still having problems with scripted items not working after I bought them. One from Armory overstock that I was assured would work after SL fixes the bugs. Who knows maybe it didnt work to begin with. I guess I can kiss that 900l goodbye.
You can guess what store Im staying away from.
BTW thank you Stargazer Diller great customer service as well as a nice jacket my group loves them.
I am sure I will be back for more.

  83. 83 Amy Faddoul Says:

*Cackles* My bad. That will teach me to only read the Blog that I click on.

  84. 84 revochen Says:

    hey guys…come down!
    dont play any drama here
if you worry about your busy just because llGiveInventoryList is broken …face it! ITS A GAME!

  85. 85 Kevin Susenko Says:

Haven’t you guys heard of overtime?

  86. 86 Kristopher Hudson Says:

Merlin, 30 years eh? That’s an interesting note - curious to what languages. :)

Seriously, take this opportune time to focus on your own customer service - your customers will appreciate it. While the Friday cut-and-run update was a bit humorus to say the least, however again just not seeing this as a major problem to create an issue out it. Take advantage people. :)

Merlin, kutos to accrediting LL for there efforts, Linden Lab’s Second Life may have it’s bugs and there standards are a bit unusual, however those standards have shaped what was thought to be “impractical” into a million dollar industry so they’ve got to be doing something right. :) Let them have there quirks and strange behavioral patterns, as long as they remain inventive and continue to think outside that box, more power to them.

  87. 87 Alice Says:

Indeed, it is funny. With so many professionals (from real-world companies, or working for real-world companies, or just earning a living by providing something to SL users) engaged in SL in some way, you would expect something more than just a ‘oh well, made a mistake, figure it out monday, let’s get drunk’-approach. It does show something about what sort of standard linden labs sets for it’s own perfomance. They are open about it, which is nice… and they made something really cool… but this sort of approach will make managers from companies that consider investing in SL look away and shake their head. Which is fine, it can stay a really interesting if extremely buggy and laggy 3d chat/game. It could be more, but that would really require a change in attitude.

  88. 88 Tillie Ariantho Says:

Hey folks, make an AFK message that there is a bug and the items are going to wrong folders, where is he problem?

Each buyer will get this message in reply to IM you… so what?

  89. 89 Benja Kepler Says:

I just used my alt to check out the purchase of my item. It uses the Contents option on the box, not llGiveInventorylist, and so works fine.

I also put up a sign with a screenshot of the Inventory folder where the item goes if bought, just to make it clear to potential purchasers.

  90. 90 Zlad voom Says:

Again LL did not use the Beta Grid to test Bugfixes, why dont you use it?
Did u read the open letter ??? did u understand the needs of your paying customer????
Voice is nice to have but bugfree updates are a must !!!!!!!

To all Lindens: we pay your salary we are the customers

  91. 91 Kalyrra Heart Says:

LL, last month you sold 189 million L$ that you created out of thin air without working to earn it (competing with the very people who support your online world). How about working a few hours this weekend to fix this little problem?

  92. 92 Neon Dingson Says:

Sorry Lindens, But I have actually lost inventory. MY ZHAO HUD and L$800 of animations contained within it. And yes I have done all the usual ‘advised’ stuff to find it. So it seems that we are to be plagued with losing random inventory items yet again when playing SL.

I have to say this, but SL is the only online game that I have played where inventory, loss of items during simple rezzing or take actions occurs. This stuff is basic. If you can’t get the basic stuff right how the hell are we to trust you with important stuff like personal information for age verification.

Yes I am annoyed because this is not the first time I have lost objects that I have paid for. And why is it that I only lose objects that are not copyable.

As the Open letter requested and people have repeated asked. Sort out stability and the basics first. Once SL is working fine than you can introduce new features to break SL all over again.

  93. 93 Enigma Cassavetes Says:

Kudos to @62 & @63. While everybody spends 30 mins whining on this blog these two spend 5 mins putting in the simplest of fixes and business carries on. How the rest of the whingers on this blog would cope with a RL business I really don’t know. “Assess - Adapt - Survive”

But good point made about introducing something on a Friday when you haven’t got the resource to fix it.

  94. 94 montgomery sunnyside Says:

This is a real nightmare. For real LL, isnt it time to pay us doing the betatesting? Im running a business (as most others do) and business is nearly non existent after your last updates. We have bills to pay and the landlords surely will not wait for their money because YOU made a mistake.
And Simba Fuhr is right. Why is there no international support? Well, why is there no support at all atm. Im very disappointed about the situation. Im loosing money! Well that would be ok, if i would get some fun instead, but the usual problems (tp, rezzing, lag, inventory, etc… ;) prevent that.
    DO SOMETHING FOR GOD SAKE!!!

  95. 95 Christos Ferraris Says:

I really like sl when it works but there are to many bugs. Im goning to try Entropia Univere :(

  96. 96 Alpha Vargas Says:

Dismissing such a massive economic bug as “eh, we’ll fix it after the weekend” is BEYOND unacceptable.

  97. 97 Lazikas Barbosa Says:

LL guys, why dont you, instead of having this “Helpfull Tip about camera”, put a message about this bug for everyone that logs in ? This is for sure something that everyone sees…

  98. 98 Tegg B Says:

    Usagi Musashi Says:

    May 19th, 2007 at 1:11 AM PDT
CRASH CRASH CRASH! and when touch object occurs crashing results. The grid monkeys are on banana break for the weekend, oh joy its going to be really fun until tuedays :/

Face it Usagi, seein SL seems to never work properly for you in last 6 months, you have something different to everyone else. They could fix every bug in SL and your machine would still crash :)

  99. 99 Jopsy Pendragon Says:

“No Change Friday” is a policy in lots of shops, sounds like it may get adopted here after this. ;)

If they were to deploy a change on Friday, I’d prefer it be something trivial.. you know.. like preventing certain people from posting 15 times when there’s only a 100 reply limit on blog entries. ;)

  100. 100 Vic Says:

Have any of you tested your own objects? Hold off on moaning for long enough and you might find it hardly affects you. All my wall vendors work fine because they use good old basic Lindon ‘Buy Object’. The things that don’t work are my freebie distributing devices because I have scripted them. TRY THIS:

Deactivate the script containing llGiveInventory - for those who will moan “you cant expect us to do that on a Saturday”, “I don’t know how to do that”…. just click the big red X at the top of the screen and come back on Monday. For those who actually want to be helped…. take the tick out of ‘Running” in the bottom corner of the script. Go to the General tab, enter your price and change “When left clicked” to “Buy Object”, sure you wont get fancy messages like “Thanks for visiting XYZ and kissing my butt” but your customers will receive their items as per normal.

If you use a vendor, sorry can’t help! Maybe go moan at the creator!

Silly of you to break things on a Friday LL, but come on, help these obviously mentally impaired moaning people work arround it.

  101. 101 Zebadee Says:

yay more complete boobery, we had a good few weeks in march, now its back to the same old linden labs

  102. 102 Thyna Ree Says:

I can see a couple different side’s here and you can take my opinions and run with em or just ignore them that is your choice

    1. Unfortunately becuase Linden Labs was trying to fix a big bug before a holiday weekend in the USA -doesn’t think any other country celebrates memorial day but hey correct me if I’m wrong- instead of leaving it all weekend another bug spawned in the fix of the first bug.

Given we all know linden labs makes mistakes but you can’t tell me no other company has bug issue’s from time to time specially games as massive & diverse as something like secondlife.

So ty Linden Labs for trying to correct a bug but eh..it backfired lol

    2. I feel bad for those merchants who are going to have to do alot of customer repping this weeking if that means you have to ccp something and post it into every im concerning why someone didn’t recieve said item that may be the case sadly.

    3. If people who really like to shop but are afraid they are going to loose something a suggestion would be a. make a folder in recent so anything you do buy toss it into that, b. don’t go buying expensive things by expensive I mean anything you won’t have the funds to replace without having to buy money so if you can’t by that 11k castle this weekend i think you’ll live til tuesday ^^:

    4. Had something else to say but I figure I have done enough yapping ^^

  103. 103 Joeb Says:

    Ipaymembershipfeebug

and i don’t have a fix for it this month!

  104. 104 loki clifton Says:

umm the buy contents option dose not seem to be effected so its not as bad as it sounds

  105. 105 minx jun Says:

i bought shoes worth 200 $ from AFANTASY EMPORIUM, ARKADIA MALL, my money is gone and the shoes r not in my inventory. pl help. also when i tp often my hair n shoes come off n stick 2 my bum! which isnt nice at all. kindly fix the problem. otherwise its a great game enjoying myself ty.

  106. 106 Kitten Radio Says:

Blue, thank you everyone for atleast trying to get a fix out, but frankly, you need to do a true rollback on the sourcecode on the servers, you NEED to revert it back to the prior stage.

    I give you a 10 for effort.
But I give you a 5 for actual benefits of this update.

  107. 107 Anabella Voom Says:

perhaps this is related…i bought two items earlier, both by ‘gift’…..they both showed in my inventory, as they should, initially…

it was when i ‘wore’ them, and then ‘took’ them back…that the problem occured…the first item ended up in an errant ‘new folder’, which i almost deleted before checking……the second i havent found at all…..and i have been through every single folder in my inventory…

i did all this before i read about the problem…in boths cases i happen to know the sellers….and both sent me a new item….but no way am i going to rez them again..until this problem is fixed…

if my experiance is related to the bug…then its actually worse than its made out to be…

  108. 108 Clinton Oddfellow Says:

While this isn’t exactly the end of the world, it is somewhat of an inconvienience to anyone who a) uses llGiveInventory() in their vendors, and b) purchases from a vendor that uses llGiveInventory().

Workarounds have been posted up further, and they’re not difficult to implement, but they’re still inconvienient and shouldn’t be necessary.

It’s perfectly understandable to have a buggy release come out every once and a while (not everything can be tested in house) when a really annoying bug like this comes along, it’s nice to know about it, but kind of a kick in the head to see “Yeah, we’ve got this bug…but it’s friday….and we won’t get to it until monday. Our bad!”

The problem isn’t all that serious, but it is really rather inconvienient. Owners of vendors can put signs up all over everywhere, and set their busy mode to reply to people who ask them about it, but people don’t always read what’s spoon fed to them, and they’ll still blame the sellers, making their lives difficult for the next few days.

To all the people screaming about this: Yes, it is incredibly annoying, but it could always be worse — it could just not complete the inventory transaction and send purchased goods into the void.

To Linden Labs: I, and many others, appreciate your constant efforts to make SL a better place. I appreciate you blogging abo
