Second Life Open! Maintenance Complete

10:35am PDT: The Second Life Grid is still currently down as we work on an issue with one of our Dallas network switches identified during testing of this morning’s maintenance work. We’re currently working to either repair the problem and bring the switch back online or move the affected hosts to another network so we can open the grid. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you all again for your patience.
10:00am PDT: We’re currently in the final stages of today’s maintenance work. We hope to be back up shortly and apologize for the delay.
9:00am PDT: The downtime is still going well, we hope to be back up again by 10am PDT. Thank you all for your patience while we work to improve Second Life.
7:00am PDT: Work on the main grid is proceeding as expected. Beta Grid logins are being slow; we’re investigating the problem.
As previously announced, the grid is currently closed while some maintenance work is performed. We’re not doing any software updates - this is purely hardware work needed to ensure critical things like electricity are delivered to all of the machines that make up the grid, and also to increase the bandwidth into our Dallas facility. We should be open again by 10am PDT.
As a reminder: at 8am PDT there will be a Party on the Beta Grid to test out Voice. An updated Beta viewer (version 1.16.0.1) will be required - you can see an earlier post to find out what else is in it.
NOTE: The Lindens engaged in the update are hard at work, so we probably won’t read comments on this post. Party on, dudes!

Hello LL, I think you guys should take a look at a problem i been having since the last update. Sometimes it’s impossible to build and if i finnaly can build it refuses to change textures, resize the parts, etc. Also a problem with inventory, i lost a few things during the update aswell (luckaly free stuff only so far i can tell). Also after the update my latest project that was still in world during the update was somehow replaced 10 meters (funny but ow well, it’s not suppost to do that :p )

Yeah, they need more help dealing with all the whiners out there. When people start whining that there is a problem with THE BETA GRID…what are they supposed to do? Beta means that it is in testing, no action guaranteed…still ppl whine on and on, just as they do about every little thing.
Get real people…whining doesn’t make them change anything. Either you stick around, send in complaints the normal way or leave. Whining in posts like this isn’t helping anyone. It makes the team work less enthustiastic and generally makes everyone enjoy their SL experience less.
Complaining is one thing, you do that to the company. Whining is something else and brings nothing good.

Bit stupid to think they are going to work on the problems on the beta grid when they are doing maintanance at the main grid.
People have only two hands, they can’t do everything at the same time.
Test the voice thing on the beta grid later, it’s well known that when the main grid is down the beta grid is overwelmed with SL-ers.

Beta grid is open now. It may take you some time to get in it. It took me about 40 mins. What they were saying was they would like to max it …have as many logged in as possible starting 8am, but no it is open.

i don`t mind down time…if the packet loss,low bandwith/ general lag would be fixed.
SL is awesome, but the almost constant lag killes all the fun.
I have never played an online game/experience that lags more then SL.
having a fast pc and connection means nothing when youre playing SL.lol

Hmmm… Well the beta grid seems gone for the moment. *This* is perfectly normal, I’m only hoping that proper QA procedures will use this as a flag that maybe one shouldn’t expedite the beta to the main grid before a little more testing…
Oh and BTW I feel it is a bit silly not to have the client itself handle the sculptie texture reversal. And the example sculptie textures in the Library haven’t even been corrected…

Look… Voice is nice and all (for some people who have the overwhelming urge to chatter about chattering), but it will bring more problems to the grid through Community Standards and Terms of Service violations which cannot be reported through the standard framework.
Not that I haven’t said *that* before…
Meanwhile, there are other pressing issues that need to be addressed. For example, the land buy/sell system is costing people money.
But most pressing is… JIRA needs to be more friendly. I suppose that one way to assure that there are no reported problems is to make it almost impossible for people to report problems. But people keep saying ‘go test the Beta Grid’ and here’s the thing - the whole grid is a Beta grid. What you call the Beta grid is just a staging area for the new Beta.

I agree about JIRA… I called a week or so back to talk to a tech about the Group Messaging problem. He pointed me to the JIRA site and showed me that it was a known problem, they were working on it, etc. Then he said I should log in and add my information to notes concerning this issue… well.. then he said “Wait a sec… there’s a problem loggin in to JIRA atm, you may need to wait a bit.” (or something to that effect). As I said, that was a week or so ago. As of yesterday, I still couldnt log into JIRA.
So you’re right, until they fix the bug that keeps you from reporting a bug in the bug reporting system, JIRA appears to be useless too.

jira is COTS (commercial off the shelf) software. it is daunting at first. but if you stick with it a bit then it becomes easier. since it is COTS we can’t expect much to be changed. So a support forum *inside* jira is advised for user to user assistance. *NOT* a forum inside of SL that is not public access as the forums are *NOT* open to *ALL* sl residents therefore the sl forums *ARE NOT* valid.
And there will be no “NO VOTE* feature unless the people that make jira add it. That has been clearly stated in the feature requests in jira. it just isn’t LL software.

Electricty is a major problem in data centers. Having a PC per region is a major problem as 2L expands. I still dont understand why IBM cannot help them or SUN. Unix is Unix is Unix so why not run multiple regions on a single mini-computer or on a single large-scale computer.. IBM computer in a “can.”

Hey people, calm down and read everything for a change. The grid is down, everyone doesnt like it but it is for the best (lets hope). i also cursed like an old sailor when i read they are going offline. but ow well.. thats the way it goes, now just give them the things they should know and stop whining about everything that they dont need to know.

Does anyone know what time that is EST that it will be up completly. I am still learning this whole thing. For some reason, my DumbA decided to skip ahead to the island. Not a smart move. But anyway, I am learning so I want to get in as much as possible. It said 10am PDT, what is that EST?

To #45– But they WANT us to report problems! They don’t want to FIX problems. That’s why they are so hell-bent on getting voice into SL.
They want to be able to hear the quiver in your voice when you beg for your inventory back; the timbre in you voice when you scream with outrage because a land bot grabed your land; the richness of you voice while you try to make sense with them…ahhhh, how they dream of the day they can pipe your voice throughout “customer service” while the party rocks on over the ringing of unanswered phones.
And you thought they were shoving “voice” for the benefit of SL residents. Go sign the frickin’ OpenLetter like I did, they need more toilet paper in the management john.

I signed the Open Letter and support it wholeheartedly, however I have not noticed any really bad problems in the last 2 weeks. OK there are still issues, but if I compare it to a few weeks ago; it seems to be a little better?
One question I have for any Linden….. when you introduce Speech….will this affect existing available bandwidth? If it does….there are going to be real issues….because it seems to be a real bottleneck right now…without Speech….
Really would appreciate Linden or anyone who knows about this issue letting us all know…..please

Please surprise me with the newests features after the down-time! ‘ll I made a guess? a crash every 5 minutes? Less network traffic, it solves also the network problems!
It’s good that SL crashes in a stabilised way, so we have more time to write comments!

I can’t tell Linden Labs just how much fun this game is. It has quickly become my favorite on line game of all time. It amazes me that it is down so little compared to the other games I play. And the price is right too! Most of the people I have met in SL have been really friendly and kind, giving me clothing, WINGS! and all sorts of neat stuff. It’s a one of a kind community!

yes group notice got issues, when u try to send message waits to connect and sometimes it says error connecting to group chat, bla bla bla,
rolls eyes and wonders whats gonna be screwd up during this mentainance, cause that is always when there is problem after updates and mentainance.

Beta grid is obviously for testing only, it states it right on it. I see no reason to even bother to try to log on to it when the SL Grid is down. I can never get on there during the maintenance and I have tried several times. It is pointless…
Also, I do not believe that voice is a good idea. They already and issues with underage children being on the adult grid and now they wish to allow voice access.
Voice is the one thing that will create the most lag and also you will see twice as many griefers. I have no interest in using it EVER.

Ok I give up…It won’t let me back onto the Beta grid…So much for their come and join the party and let’s hammer the Beat Grid and see if it survives. For me apart from a brief glimpse, it doesn’t….Rather like support on the main grid.
When am I going to get answers to support emails (not for little mundane things like “I lost a pair of shoes” or “How do I get out of this cage”. but the ones I put in when I can’t Rez anything for hours. Why can I only judder round a class 5 sim with only 3 “agents” in situ. Why do I keep being crashed out when SL decides to try and use more than the 2GB of RAM on my machine, and why is SL using so much, Also why are there still large areas still totally grey on the map while the sims there are active and operational, but of course a lot of people don’t realise ( I know they have a problem, but that is only cos I was at the Town Hall Meeting. Don’t remember seeing anything on the blog for the general public to be aware of the problem…Not to mention an abuse report, that I have still yet to here on even though it related to adult contnt on a PG sim All have got the statutory autoreply and then nothing else.
Apologies here to Rheya Linden who has tried to help with the slow performing sim with restarts, but it has not cured the problem. And the JIRA, I totally agree I will have to go back to Uni/College to learn to find my way round that site.

Here is hoping the stress test works for the voice feature. What i really dont understand is, whenever you test something on beta that WORKS!?, it always ends up broken when it ends up on the main grid. Like some nasty gremlin is between the two chewing up code as it laughs insanely at all of us.
Why bother beta testing a feature when you know you will not read the outcome and just push on ahead. If i didnt know better i would say you guys are intentionally overburdening your platform, are you actually testing second life on us before releasing something that really works?
Love the innovation, Love second life for the most part, hate the technical incompetance and your lack of customer service, do the right thing LL and FIX THINGS!

I bet the reason they can’t get the beta grid up is due to a prank they perpetrated in which the entire betagrid landmass has been replaced by a giant sculptie, which has inverted and annihilated everyone.
