Preview of Second Life 1.16 on the Beta Test Grid - Sculpties!

Friday, May 4th, 2007 at 5:38 PM by: Joshua Linden

First off, a quick roadmap -

Second Life 1.15.1 will be an Optional Viewer release next week. Many of the fixes listed below which are going into Beta can be released as part of an optional viewer, and we plan to do so as soon as testing has been completed. We are also planning to roll out additional simulator fixes for group IMs, group notices, and friends list as they are ready.

Second Life 1.16.0 is the next release that will require viewer updates in conjunction with a server deploy. We are currently planning for this to occur on Wednesday, May 23rd, but expect further announcements as the date draws near.

Next, what’s in the Second Life 1.16 Beta:

  • Sculpties! As discussed on the blog and on the wiki, Sculpties (or Sculpted Prims) are a new type of prim that has a shape described by a special kind of texture. Check out the links to learn more.
  • Voice! We’ve integrated the voice beta capabilities into the normal 1.16 viewer Beta. Check out the links to learn more.

Updated Beta Viewers will be required, and can be downloaded from the Beta Test Grid page.

Macintosh Users: We are seeing issues with auto-updating from previous Beta Viewers on the Macintosh. We’ll be investigating this issue. For now, users should download the viewer from the Beta Test Grid page.

[UPDATE: We have reports of crashes running the Beta Viewer when with flexi objects are visible. We'll obviously address this and other reported issues with further updates to the Beta as quickly as possible.]

Will age verification be added to this beta release?

  5. 5 Stormvangoth Says:

    tüdeldü

  6. 6 Beat Roelofs Says:

I agree that the fixes are necessary. But for the voice and sculpted prims, I feel that there must be a period of minimal two weeks of SL working properly. - In a week or so we will have a peak of 40K Users online. Please take this into consideration

  7. 7 Susie Boffin Says:

I see that you paid absolutely no attention to the open project letter that clearly asked Linden Labs not to implement any new features. No new features means no new anything! I have been in SL a long time and after reading this announcement and the identity verification one I am having some real doubts staying in the “new internet”.

  8. 8 Patti Frye Says:

As always, here’s hoping that some of the bad bugs have been fixed. At least their making an effort.

  9. 9 Elder Raymaker Says:

you are making so much money you have lost sight of the customer. the customer who pays for your system doesn”t want a new and better system until the old system is fixed. After the town meeting it is fact you are playing lip service to our main comcerns. FIX THE SYSTEM WE ARE USING NOW !!!!! Thank you have a nice day.

  10. 10 Dale Innis Says:

As a customer who pays for the system, I say keep doing whatever the heck you think best. You’re doin’ a darn good job so far, and I’m looking forward to sculpties. Stopping all development until no one has any more complaints would be Death. :))

  11. 11 Ben Says:

this update has completely messed up alot of my old objects and also crashes ALOT….. god help us if/when it goes on the main grid.

  12. 12 Raccoon Kabuki Says:

    Re: Age Verification

So, remind me why I entrusted LL with my credit card number when I signed up?

    Right. L$250.

  13. 13 Novae Zymurgy Says:

Oh dear god, I don’t see a fix or a option for us who have older graphic cards. I don’t think I can survive another required update. I do appreciate the effort of actually fixing things, Lindens, but this constant required update madness is killing most of us who still don’t have real fixes for our graphic cards and SL.

    I do appreciate the work that you are trying to do right now, but think of us poor laptop users would you? ;.;

  14. 14 Henri Beauchamp Says:

    BOYCOTT !

I propose that all land and parcel owners boycott the “adult” flag.

I’m 43 years old, I’m French, and we got in France a very strong set of laws to protect our privacy. There is no way I will give to LL or any third party any official info about my identity. Period.

By giving my payment info (and using it), I ALREADY gave to LL the proof that I am an adult. Any demand for more proofs is simply illegal as far as the French Law applies. And I am pretty sure, this also applies to a whole lot of countries across the world.

The solution I see is therefore that all land owners boycott the adult flag and let free access to the Mature sims for the residents with “payment info on file/used” (you can already do that in SL), which is enough a proof about their age !

I’m all for baning non adults from the adult grid, and it’s a very simple task to do it: simply require the payment info (either CC or Paypal). There is NO NEED for an adult check.

The existence of PG and Mature areas on an adult grid is already a non-sense (all resident being supposed to be mature, what the Hell is the use of a PG area ???), let’s not introduce more non-sense into SL.

  15. 15 Brodo Beerbaum Says:

#3 “Will age verification be added to this beta release?”

Will it? I’ve just bought a boat load of land in a mature water sim. Are we going to see some kind of annoying “Banned from parcel” fencing for those parcels branded Adult? So if I don’t verify I suddenly will be knocking around these like a pinball machine for areas I could once travel freely through? What barring ‘mechanism’ is going to be implemented?

  16. 16 Garn Conover Says:

woot! lol who’s takin bets on how long it takes for feilds of Phalluses? I like the ideas your comming up with but is there any update on a Vista version? I still cant log in for more than a few w/o crashin and ive got all updates
    Geof 7500le
    Vista Prem 32
    core duo
    1gig

  17. 17 Raccoon Kabuki Says:

Nice how LL shuts down comments on the hot-button issue, leaving it to flood tech threads.

  18. 18 Cosette Lundquist Says:

Even if some users are short sighted, and go for anything shiny and new, some of us know a diversionary tactic when we see it.

Please fix past problems before introducing anything new. That is all that residents have been asking. We would like to see the previous updates functional before any new ones come along and pile more woes and work onto every one (Lindens included of course).

New things are great, they’re wonderful. But you have some issues and grievances (passwords and new age verification) that are best taken care of first.

What the open letter had to say was very plain and simple, or at least I think so.

LL, please stop worrying about the children and being on the absolute cutting edge.

    *Pay attention to your residents
*Fix the current system and issues

So far I’ve seen a lot of taking what has been asked for way out of context, and not a whole lot of follow through otherwise.

  19. 19 Alexandra Rucker Says:

Oh joy, more bells, less fixes.

    *head/desk*

    Gee….thanks….so much.

  20. 20 sterling Whitcroft Says:

    Enough!
Fix all the critical errors BEFORE you add in Voice and Sculpties.
Cool as they might be, they are NOT essential to the enjoyment of Second Life.

  21. 21 Wyald Woolley Says:

I’m posting this here since you slammed the door shut on the Age & Identity thread at 59 replies…some one must have hit a nerve!

Age and Identity Verification in Second Life
Friday, May 4th, 2007 at 4:25 PM PDT by: daniellinden

This unreal solution to a real problem is laughable. Somehow, to the lobotimized Lindens, having and using a credit card is not considered age verification, however, coughing up the lat four digits of someone’s SSN and not owning or using a credit card (debit card or bank card) is considered age verification.

By allowing children, who don’t have a workable CC that they can and do use, to still access SL is part of the Linden’s whole objective, so they institute this idiotic work-around that still gives the child access to grief the heck out of all but the age verified adults safely hunkered down in a “Adult” area/sim.

What this ill-conceived non-sense seems to overlook is that all of SL is an adult-only area…some areas within SL is more adult content than others, but there whould be no children what-so-ever. Because LL is continuing to be a blind gatekeeper they wish to pass off the “morally and legally responsibility” to the land owners to keep children from seeing what they shouldn’t. It is not the land owners responsibility to flag their land from children’s viewing…it is LL morally and legally responsibility to be the gate keeper. The land owner only needs to flag the area/sim/land to notify other adults that don’t wish to see certain behaviors/images.

Until, such time as LL requires ALL residents to have some kind of payment method on file and verified, all of this hog wash is just a smoke screen to allow children into the Adult-only SL area.

Rather then be reticent to classify one’s land as “Adult”, I wonder what would happen if all land owners were to move to that classification as a protection from the great numbers of griefers who are mostly the under-aged children LL is so careful to continue to allow access via their current “no proof of a adult-only financial instrument.’

I’m sorry to be the one to point out the elephant in the room, but if you re-read the initial announcement, you will see that it is not at all about keeping children out of RL but about trying to let them in while moving LL’s responsibility for gate-keeping to the land owners.

  22. 22 Jakk Szondi Says:

OK the previous blog has autoclosed @ 100 again. No Linden is watching it to see that it stays open.. no forums are open to discuss it.
So instead we get a new viewer with ‘new’ goodies to play with that flies in the face of everything the open letter project tried to address and LL ‘claimed’ they were listening to.
Read the posts. Cant you see what people are saying here??
A few Yays from people that only want to try the ‘next best thing’ doesnt outweigh the paying customers that run businesses and islands that are fed up with stability issues.

I joined. I became a premium member about 2 weeks after first land stopped. Unfortuantely on the sign up page there was NO MENTION first land had been stopped! I only found that out after trying to get some!
Since then, I have bought an entire sim. I went out and bought everything i needed for my casino. 2 weeks later, casino ads were banned.
So i went ahead and built a club on my sim. Nice place, dancing, and dancers.
Except in a couple of weeks my dancers will be out of a job. Because Ill have to make the whole island non adult in nature. No, not just the PARCEL the club is on. THE WHOLE ISLAND to accomadate non verifieds. (dont say i wint have to.. it will be a long time before most businesses can survive in adult only areas once age verification starts.)

    So if anyones interested,
i have a whole load of club equipment to sell
I dont have any casino equipment to sell because hey.. even though its a matter of weeks old I now cant sell it on to anyone.
And I dont have my parcel of first land to sell on because when they removed first land they forgot to update the premium sign up page to reflect that first land no longer existed BEFORE stopping the land giveaway.

Is my timing just really really bad??
Because it seems everything I do is within 2 weeks suddenly unavailable or unfeasible.
Or could it be that LL are just so scared of getting sued every right now that they are retracing their steps and retracting everything they once offered to their customers.
Im not buying another thing. Nada, Zilch.
Because im either forced to sell it all at a loss a few weeks later or I cant even sell it and may as well just delete it from my inventory.
I wonder if this could be listed in Jira under ‘unexplainable inventory loss’

  23. 23 Psistorm Ikura Says:

    woot!
cant wait to meddle with these - Ill definitely play around a lot with them, since I see a lot of potential in them!

as for the “fix up the old stuff” folks: 70% of the LL team are dedicated to this atm, ffs. they ARE working on it, its not as if all of LL were working on that… get some perspective, folks

  24. 24 Novae Zymurgy Says:

    @20,

Note that 70% of the team apparently doesn’t seem to be enough. Just because you are running the update just fine doesn’t mean that the rest of us are.

I don’t like complaining, it wastes my time. However, since nothing is being done for the laptop users that are STILL crashing, I figured that I may as well put my two cents in.

Hmm…sculpted prims? Sounds nice. Actually having a working viewer that doesn’t crash? That’s pretty darn awesome.

  25. 25 Jessica Veressi Says:

    No problems with age verification.

But Drivers Licence, Address, and last 4 of SOCIAL SEC# !?!?!?!

That is too much entirely, NO other online company I deal with that has age verified areas requires this kind of personal information to verify age for access. NONE, a credit card on file is all I need for age verification at auction sites, at banking sites, at a myriad of strictly adult content sites. A credit card is the defacto standard of age verification internet wide, it is all that any other company needs to protect themselves from liability of minors accessing adult content.

I for one would be extremely interested in knowing why LL thinks they need more personal information than any other internet/online company that hosts adult content.

As the owner of a SL adult oriented business, I am gravely concerned that the overly high requirment of personal information will have a huge impact on the amount of people that refuse to verify themselves, thus leading to fewer availble customers and shoppers.

In seeing the amount of highly adult and potentially contraversial oriented material in SL I can not help but to wonder if the requirement of more information than is necceasary is not an intentional measure to make people wary of becoming verified, thus keeping the number of verifiers low, and slowly pushing out much of the overtly adult based content in SL. All in an effort to make SL a little more paletable to the masses.

  26. 26 Binkse Ferrer Says:

Distraction. Thank you LL for repeatedly dodging the question of how much this is really going to cost all the free users. We all know that you could very simply run the CC information already provided by most users for age verification. Porn sites do it all the time, without additional information. So what is this BS about you wanting all this extra information? And why is it that you’re refusing to give out the name of the company so we can make sure our information is going through a reputable company? Personally if LL can’t bother to answer our questions straight, then I don’t think their ’service’ (if you can even call it a service anymore, what with the constant grid problems, glitch laden viewers, and the total lack of support) is even worth a ‘nominal’ fee. Start talking or I’m walking, pulling all of L$ out and throwing all of the inventory away. It was fun, but what proof do I have that my information is safe (or not being sold) when LL won’t even say who they’re going through? How do I know that they’re not going through some cheep little company (all that information, a hackers paradise) just so they can get off a little cheaper? I don’t, and until I get more information I’m one foot out the door…

  27. 27 Zi Ree Says:

    - Linux viewer crashes after “Precaching” and starting to fade in the in-world graphics.
    - Flexible objects freak out with spikes and distortions on a Windows client on intel 915 Chipset

  28. 28 sterling Whitcroft Says:

    On the Age Verification Issue.

I’m all for it. Its a great idea. I expect a HUGE drop in Griefers on the mature SIMS. And the number of free, unverified ALTS will go Waaaayyy down…easing the load on the asset servers.

    But there’s 3 problems that I see:

    1. When a ‘credit card’ was proposed as a means of age verification (back last fall) there was a HUGE uproar from overseas…’cuz credit cards aren’t as popular and PayPal doesn’t work. The Int’l community was afraid they’d get shut out.

Now the Lindens propose that EVERYONE provide Identity Proof, not just proof of financial responsibility.

Seems to me that eihter is acceptable.
-If you have a credit card or PayPal paid account with the LIndens, you’re age verified at the raunchiest XXX sites on the web. “Payment Info On File” or “Payment Info Used” should be adequate for SL.
-For anyone without a Credit Card or Paypal, the online identity management service seems like a good solution.

    2. Imposing the Identity Solution on everyone, to a 3rd party whose privacy policy is not revealed, is NOT a good idea. It may be easy for you to program your ‘back office’, LIndens, to only have to deal with a single identity management service, but it is NOT a good idea. Either/or method of proof should be acceptable.

There are clearly some privacy issues involved here, as well as issues of responsibility. So tell us, “Who Do We Sue When Our Private Data Is Compromised?” I’d like to know NOW, who will be accountable.

    3. Payment. Let me see. I pay $72/year to be ‘Premium.’ At current exchange rates, that’s about L$19,000. And now you propose to charge me “less than L$10′ to be verified? How cheap can you get? I clearly don’t understand the payment proposal. Is this gonna be L$10 EVERY TIME I ACCESS AN ADULT AREA? EVEN MY OWN PROPERTY?
Or are you saying that you’re going to extract L$10 one time fee to have my age ‘verified’? You’ll spend WAY more to write the billing system for that L$10 charge than you will collect! Come on, Lindens, think it through!

  29. 29 Novae Zymurgy Says:

I don’t think it is fair to make us, who don’t own paid accounts to pay a fee to make sure we aren’t underage users. There has to be a better way to do this, guys. Something has to give on this issue.

  31. 31 Kevin Susenko Says:

    Scuplties = cool.
Making me pay to send my drivers license to some third party so you can verify my age to access the majority of the main grid = very very lame.

  32. 32 les Says:

    Re: age verification. (closed thread…sigh)

If SL is adult only then why is this age check not done ON THE SIGN UP PAGE? Would this perhaps negatively effect Phillips favorite number? You guys are a bad joke on so many levels.

I look forward to having to pay to give age verification AGAIN. Go premium!

    hardy har har.

    carry on.

  33. 33 Shinyukie Takakura Says:

There is still no way to contact anyone if you are haviing an inworld sim stability problem and need a response in a reasonable time frame (ie..less than a week say). The methods listed in the blog do not work. Anyone who says they do is ….well…I won’t say. Want proof? Just try and report an unstable sim through their support system. They ducked a response to this at the town hall saying it’s in the blog…but pointing to a non functional system is not an answer…except…maybe…yes!! that’s it….all support functions have now been outsourced to Dogbert tech support!!! That explains everything…..(including the increasingly pointy hair on those rarely sighted in world lindens…..).

  34. 34 Alicia Sautereau Says:

so the open letter project is totally being ognored with spinning words and corperate bs

how hard it it to stop for say, 1 month, with adding new stuff but have the team fixing critical bugs instead of playing with new toys and ignore us

i`ll skip the worldwide privacy law violations part for now as i`m not blocked in by sex clubs all around…

  35. 35 Jaxx Tardis Says:

LL employs many people and I can speak from experience that good original creators are usually not good debuggers. I suspect that Sculpties have been in the works in secret for some time and have no real ‘grid’ level impact, frankly they’ll probably help, a single scuplted prim for an avatar attachment or 200 prims to do the same thing?

  36. 36 Jaxx Tardis Says:

I know this isn’t the place to suggest features but why don’t you tie the blog to autogenerate a forum topic for each post? Seriously that’s an afternoon job for a single 2 bit hacker.

  38. 38 Brett Finsbury Says:

its not the concern for age its the kickbacks for sending business to a 3rd party company. Dont bother me none except that now the porn clubs will close now the trash will spill into the streets.
Have you been to Abbotts Aerodome after midnight? I am sure the owner doesnt know that his/her PG sim is being used as a escort hang out taking their business into buildings in the PG sandbox next door.
Sorry this is off topic guess I should have” filed a bug report “ROFL.

  39. 39 Liz Link Says:

I’m all for keeping the kiddies on the teen grid so they won’t be corrupted until their 18th birthday.
I will not give out my SSN, address, phone #, and drivers liscence together to a company that already has had a major security problem-even if it is to a 3rd party.
I’ll just have to stay in my PG sim:/

  41. 41 Theogrin Dilley Says:

Unfortunately, while the updates *look* reasonable and decent for the most part - especially the bug fixes - I’m going to have to cry foul on the issue of voice chat.

I can’t imagine that it would have any truly positive effects, particularly for those who want to separate their Second Life from their First..a situation which is heavily problematic in numerous ways already.

  42. 42 Vincent Nacon Says:

@12 “I’m 43 years old, I’m French, and we got in France a very strong set of laws to protect our privacy. There is no way I will give to LL or any third party any official info about my identity. Period.”

Then you can’t play SL where they are on USA’s ground. Sorry :/ Just make your choice. Give up your identity or …go to teen grid?

  43. 43 Argent Stonecutter Says:

Immediate crash on login, apparently someone’s put a really horrible complex sculpted prim where I’m logging in and I materialise inside vector hash.

  44. 44 Cedric Boyd Says:

    Hey,

due to the auto-closed comment function in many current blog entrys:

    1) Still waiting for a feedback from linden lab support concerning my three support requests. Closing the in-world help was a very bad idea since i’m not getting any answer from you (except the one which i’d to ask during the town-hall). Should i use the town-hall in future instead of sending a email to your “support”?! I’ll ;).

    2) Town-Hall: nice… everything i heard during one hour (in which the group im was broken about 30min - great isn’t it?) was something like “we’re currently working”… still waiting for the successful realization :).

    3) Age and Identity verification: I’m a assigned basic member with payment info on file =and= already used. So -> why do i have to pay for verifying my age? And how much (as i can’t find any further information concerning this) do i (as a basic member) have to pay for (L$/USD)?!

    Regards
    Cedric

  45. 45 Argent Stonecutter Says:

    Nope, immediate crash anywhere.

  46. 46 Real Deal Says:

If I am on my own land and i have not become “age verified”, and i do not have the adult checkbox or whatever checked, can I still speak things with “adult content” in them to my partner. Like I tell her/him to go **** themselves for example - am I now in violation of the adult property flagging?
Or just in general, what if someone says something kind of “adulty” and non-age verifieds overhear it? Who gets suspended? The spaker or the easedroppers? What if the speaker is non-age verified, do you have to be age verified to speak in “adult” terms? Say a non age-verified tells an age verified ava that she has nice boobs? Obviously it is okay for the age verified ava to hear that, but is it okay for the non-age verifed ava to say it? Who should fill out the AR? The spaker, the person the comment was directed at, or a non-age verified that overheard?

I still submit that LL is requiring more personal info than needed to keep people away from becoming verified in order to hurt adult oriented business in SL in an effort to “clean it up” for the masses.

  47. 47 nokithecat writer Says:

Many countries have privacy laws that must be considered!
LL already has many members’ names, addresses and several credit card numbers in file already. LL can use this to verify age already. International licenses, passports and S.I.N. are not needed. There is a liability issues for the misuse and theft of this information.
I encourage members to contact their barrister and inform them of this issue.
Legal teams should take litigation upon any and all evolved with the personal information misuses that is to say-Linden Lab, Employees and any third party used.
Identity thieves have stolen billions yearly; Linden Labs can’t keep PASSWORDS secure how can they keep Passport, Licenses & S.I.N. secure?????
You might wonder why I’m very upset.
I have been a victim of identity theft; I had thousands stolen from me!!!!
I suggest people should be proactive, utilize legal teams find other victims and seek compensation from all involved! Power in Numbers, Power to the People!

  48. 48 Gigy Woodget Says:

All I can say is bye bye SL. Been fun, but soon everyone will be gone.
Sims are empty as it is with all the new land LL keep rolling out.

Linden Lab, WE DONT NEED MORE LAND, WE DONT NEED MORE COOL FEATURES, WE DONT NEED OR WANT AGE VERIFICATION.

ask the users what they want. personally, i would like to see the ability to make bigger prims, if i could make prims up to say 40 metes square i could build most of the stuff i make out of a quarter of the prims.

  49. 49 Kymberli K Says:

    Beyond frustrating.

In the 10 minutes I was able to tinker on the Beta grid… I crashed 7 times. There’s little incentive to keep loggin in, when the instability is that pronounced. The speech tended to distort after a couple syllables. Several of us tested the ‘timing’ of this distortion… and we agreed it began at roughly 4-5 seconds of talk by a single Av. Abysmal.

  50. 50 Cosette Lundquist Says:

@34 Wow, I’ve never seen that much of a lack of understanding for someone else in a long time.

International users make up a lot of Second life’s content creators, builders, and scripted.

Saying “Oh well, you’re shit out of luck”, or something to that effect, is careless on so many levels.

There are a number of Americans who don’t want to have to give up their personal information, as they have been told for years not to.

It is a simple matter of LL demanding information that they have little to no real reason to.

We are told to protect our identities while on line, to keep our information out of hands we don’t find to be trust worthy, and that is what we will do.

Frankly, if there is a teen grid, and teens keep sneaking onto the adult grid–their parents should sue themselves.

  51. 51 Dolphpun Somme Says:

Don’t let the “New Features only Break SL” types discourage you LL! I was actually opposed to Voice… unitil I used it… and you have no idea how much I am looking forward to sculpted prims.

  52. 52 Ian Rall Says:

No other website ask for such detailed information. Not adult sites or even some PayPal asks for driver license number AND last 4 SSN. Someone could take all this info and access EVERY account you have online, even your BANK ACCOUNT. If ANYONE gives ANY website all this info you are a victim of fraud waiting to happen!
And NONE of it proves you are an adult. If someone steals a CC number they can steal the other info. No way this is legal!

  53. 53 Max Kleiber Says:

I did some tests, and find that flexi prims are wildly distorted and have a tendency to disappear from view, although the minimap shows them as being still in place.
Intel 915G Express chipset, Win XP pro

  54. 54 Ann Otoole Says:

nobody asked for voice or sculpted prims. they are doing as they please. and if you dare to point out the town hall expressly stated they are not pushing new features before stabilizing the system they delete the posting.

perhaps the lindens need to move back to the USSR.

  55. 55 Shadow Engawa Says:

LOL They are all insane. Got into some bad pot or acid. This must be some kind of joke right? April fools is long gone.

  56. 56 RobbyRacoon Olmstead Says:

GAAAAAHHHHH!!!! Sculpties now with no Blender plugin yet?!?!?!? Come on!!!

    :)

  57. 57 Anti Antonelli Says:

People whining that the new features evident in this release somehow demonstrate LL is ignoring the Open Letter and related concerns:

Do you honestly think this release was developed in the past couple of days? Grow some brains people, clearly the new features being tested here have been in development for some time, well before all the recent ruckus. And it’s just dumb to think all the hard work that went into these new features would be suddenly discarded.

I signed the letter and I agree with the concerns voiced there, but all this ridiculous ranting is stupid and only hurts LLresident communications. More signal and less noise please, or at least some signs of intelligence beyond what is required to carry torches and pitchforks and post silly rants on an internet blog.

  58. 58 RobbyRacoon Olmstead Says:

@43 - Lots of people asked for sculpted prims, or at least something beyond the standard primitives we have now. There’s years of forum posts about it. Probably several hundred requests, actually.

  59. 59 Dolphpun Somme Says:

*I* asked for sculpted prims and now I am asking for Voice. I am not “nobody”. Please speak for yourself. Very Few People… maybe. :)

  60. 60 nokithecat writer Says:

    Sculpted Prims = AWSOME ! ! ! !
Now it would be great if some one made a Sculpted Prim into a HUGE Sculpted Prim!!!
Very useful for lowering prim count on large projects!

  61. 61 Shadow Engawa Says:

Im saying this here since they capped off the thread for it. But i think verification without paying for the FREE basic account would be a smarter way to go without looking like a bunch of idiots. I’ve payed 20 something dollars to secondlife so far, but if they do this im not paying for anything else on sl.

  62. 62 me Says:

Am I the only one getting some random domain parking page when I try to download the beta viewer? Any requests to s3.amazonaws.com go to the same site!

  63. 63 Naomh Pintens Says:

First off, in regard to the people saying that a credit card is proof enough of age…I had a debit card with a mastercard logo at 15, a credit card is no longer proof of age. It used to be, but no longer.

I agree with the person who asked to be given the name of the 3rd party…research is key. If you are reluctant to give the name, I can understand being reluctant to give personal information. We are warned daily of the threat of identity theft, and if you’ve gone through it, you know the hell one goes through to get it taken care of.

Finally…all these new things are cool, but, it will only work if I can get on the grid to use them. The first thing I was told today, when I couldn’t get on my land was the I had “done something” to cause my computer to block access. Come to find out over 2000 regions were down. Premium members deserve compensation for unplanned downtime ( due to a broken grid) I understand that downtime happens, but I pay to play…and a broken grid is lost money for me. Keep making cool stuff, but keep working to fix the broken. Make it worth our while to stay. Keep your customers happy, and they won’t jump ship when something new comes down the pike…pretend like we don’t exist, or you don’t care, and the new thing will be the only thing.

As with any business, you need to look at who is paying your salary…without residents, there is no Second Life. Without Second Life, that would be a dent in your revenue. Keep that in mind.

  64. 64 Winter Ventura Says:

Milo mentioned something about Floating text on HUDS and in world being reverted to the display method used in 1.14 and before… is that patch included in the beta?

  65. 65 Feynt Mistral Says:

    * Alt-Left and Alt-Right switch between tabs in IM
This is a bad idea. Ctrl+[ and Ctrl+] already do this. Alt+Left and Alt+Right should universally orbit the camera no matter what window has focus (if any).

  66. 66 Usagi Musashi Says:

@43 well some wante VOICE be they want second life to be a THERE.COM. As for the sexy new prims well…………LLABS is better off fixing what is broken before they add this the messed up and totally outdated UI……….

  67. 67 Drake Bacon Says:

Does the Linux version have the Voice feature?

  68. 68 Rascal Ratelle Says:

TWo things, 1 I would like to remind LL of the the open letter project:

((We remain fully supportive of Second Life and are more than willing to continue doing our part to help, but our confidence is steadily being eroded due to a general lack of communication and the apparent failure to successfully address the many issues detailed above. What we are asking for is that these problems are addressed immediately, AHEAD OF NEW FEATURES, and that we are able to see tangible improvements. We accept that this will not happen overnight but it also cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely either. ))

You did not do that, What we are seeing instead is that LL has decided to disregard some of the issues brought up in this open letter.

BY the Way the current signature count is now 3953 sigs.

2: Age verification issue, You have failed to: Tell us who the third party is, if we are to entrust our privet info to a third party WE the costumers have the LEGAL right to know who this third party is. Are they a privet company? local law inforcment? a special Team put together by LL?
What is the garuntee that this currently Unknown to us third party will respect the privacy laws and NOT store he info unless requested? is LL Monitoring this third party? Why should we entrust our privet info to a third party we know nothing about?
what about security? how securer is this third party?
Who do we hold accountable if a security breach occers at the third party?
    What about third party credentials?
I believe we have the Legal right to view those too.

I refuse to submit any of my privet info to a third party untill you guys address ALL my concerns and questions regarding this issue.
I do NOT feel safe nor secure releasing my privet info to a third party I know nothing about.

One more thing, When will LL address making SL and the client more compatible with Older systems and graphics cards? not all of us are able to upgrade nor are upgrades available for aLL graphics cards. the graphics cards update page you provide is mostly for windows and does not provide a driver upgrade for my system.

To ALL residence of SL, I strongly suggest another open letter. I also strongly suggest continued petitioning of LL regarding all these issues and concerns until LL address them.

  69. 69 Argent Stonecutter Says:

@Feynt: Oh, I missed that. They’re screwing with focus again? Joy.

  70. 70 Rascal Ratelle Says:

I forgot to add, that Lindens have still not answered a previously asked question, so, How are we to submit our privet info? by photocopy? By Scanning into our computers and then E-mailing it?
How often are we to pay this fee? how much do free accounts have to pay? what about those of us unable to get a credit card for what ever reasons or can’t access pay-pal?

  71. 71 Farallon Greyskin Says:

Wow, that only took two seconds. Instant crash on connection. Haven’t seen a version that bad in a long time. crash logs reported…

  72. 72 Lozlo Peng Says:

    THE BUG FIXES DIDN’T INCLUDE

FIXED - CRASH-ON-STARTUP FOR USERS WITH ATI RADEON X300 AND X600 GRAPHICS CARDS!!?

    LETS HOPE IT WORKS ;\

    ALSO

Noones protected with voice.. how are you going to rid of griefers and peple in general who talk sexually, violently, disrecting others and just being pests? What’re you going to do about that LL? What evidence will you have to rid of these kinds of people? Are you ONCE AGAIN going to intrude in our privacy and freedom of speech by RECORDING us?
    Have things been though over?
I welcome voice, but I do not welcome LL’s mistakes.

  73. 73 Actarus Noodle Says:

LL Proves once again that it don’t give a dam about its (paying) user.

Open letter Project clearly said to LL NO NEW FEATURE UNTIL SL IS FIXED. Yet they introduce 3 new features that nobody want (well 2 features that no one want for now and one so badly implemented that nobody want it)

    1. What good is voice chat and sculpted prims when SL is not even able to do BASIC 3D whitout crashing.

    2. Age fevificsation by FORCING user to SURRENDER extremly privates information (that no one in is right mine will ever think of transmitting over the internet) to a unknown 3rd party is almost criminal!

Maybe the open letter project was not enough… Peoples at Digg found a interesting to force that company to listen to it’s consumers. maybe it time to show LL that thet PAYING member means business….

(how are my chance of been censored by LL now?)

  74. 74 Another Lame Idea Says:

This comment is concerning the age verification nightmare we are about to embark on..since the comments for that topic have been conviently shut down as soon as people began pointing out all the negatives to this idea.
My comment I wanted to make was this: I provided CC info when I joined and I update this info everytime my CC is about to expire. I think that should be enough *verification*. I dont think verified accounts should have to reverify anything, what does it prove anyway?
If minors can get hold of parents CCs whats to stop them from using parents ID’s as well? It’s just a CYA on LL’s part (cover your ass)
I’ve never heard of this level of *security* for a so called *game*..it’s a bit nuts if you think about it.
I run a business on SL and I hate to see that business take a dive into the pits of hell because people can’t or won’t verify their age to be on SL. It will stop maybe a few underage people at most, but I think the harm will far outweigh the good as I see many already saying they will leave SL before they put out their personal info to be here.
*sigh* just when thinks were looking a bit better for a once.

  75. 75 Argent Stonecutter Says:

@Lozlo: the solution to voice griefers and stalkers is not to use voice. I’m certainly not going to.

  76. 76 Peng Barthelmess Says:

Another update? Frick! Now I’m gonna either have to install yet another viewer to get in SL until the update his the Ubuntu repos or get locked out of. As far as the age verification goes, I understand why it may be needed, but how many users will be forced out by it? If I can’t identify the company that’s getting my personal info and make sure I can trust them there’s no way they’ll get it. And if not being verified as an adult gets me locked out of too many places I’ll see how some of the other virtual “games” work in Wine because SL will chase me off.

Not that I expect it matters anyway. I am a free user on Linux so there are enough other fish in the sea, they don’t need me sucking up bandwidth and clock cycles, eh?

  77. 77 Darien Caldwell Says:

Well I was excited to try out the sculpties, but after crashing 5 times in a row, I guess it’s not happening. The Logitech G15 LCD Keyboard support will be nice though…

  78. 78 Another Lame Idea Says:

And this whole adult flagging thing..I dont have any *porn* or any sex happening in my store, but I do sell skins- so pictures of naked Avatars, (which basically cartoons, not REAL PEOPLE), are posted to advertise these skins. Its much like nude paintings, they arent intended to be a sexual turn on..they are selling skins..but yet I will have to flag my shop the same as the sleazey FREE SEX places??
    BAH!!

  79. 79 Keiki Lemieux Says:

Fix inventory losses before sculpties and voice. Everyday more reports of lost inventory. LL refuses to learn from past mistakes.

  80. 80 Christian Colville Says:

Sculpties - great idea. They will have been in development before Project Open Letter was thought of so give the Lindens some credit. They will result in considerable loading efficiencies which will help the reliability problems. If they cause problems it will most likely be of the rendering variety which should only be minor annoyances.

Speech - I won’t use it but I can see the attraction especially to conferencing facilities etc. Apparently it will cause little extra server load as it is being handled independently. Minimising where it can be used should also help reduce the impact on the rest of the system.

Age controls. A huge can of worms. I’m off to the forums…

  81. 81 IfFortuneFavoursTheBrave Writer Says:

Instead of avoiding the questions people are asking you, only answering questions that have already been explained in the FAQ and capping comments to only 100, why don’t you open them up so more people can speak their mind? If you don’t, I can see people asking questions about this and the Age Verification situation in blogs and posts that don’t even pertain to the blogs they’re replying to.

Do you take the opinions of SL users to heart? If so, why does it seem like you haven’t listened to anything they/we have said?

Why won’t you name the third party company in charge of the age/ID verification?

A lot of users and businesses are going to lose a lot of generated revenue simply based on the number of people who will choose to not verify their accounts, and you will lose a lot of current and potential users through this action also.

Why can’t you fix ALL of the issues that are happening at the moment with the current release, instead of wasting your time and ours on something that will work just the same as it does at the moment anyway?

Why have sculpties if people will only lose them from their inventory anyway?

A happy customer is a paying customer, and I’m seeing more unhappy customers than their smiling counterparts.

  82. 82 Keiko Rau Says:

Its great to see that LL got the message from Project Open Letter that what we (the paying users) want is fixes to existing failures, rather than new features. I can wait forever for sculpties and voice, but it would be really nice to be able to teleport or even change my group, or do a search reliebly.

Please stop adding bloat to the servers / clients until you get them working right - it only makes them more complex and harder to debug.
    (Yes, I signed the letter)

  83. 83 Keiko Rau Says:

@46 That may be so, but forging ahead with not one, but two new, and obviously complex features right after they have been served with the open letter, really does show that the people pushing these features are out of touch.

At the very least LL should have some sensitivity and delay these new features until the system is running correctly. They do not have to discard them, just put them aside for a while until the problems are fixed, and then dust them off and implement them. They already do this all the time, look at HAVOC and MONO for example.

SL is broken. Its that simple, and voice and sculpties will not fix that, no matter how long ago their development began.

  84. 84 Argent Stonecutter Says:

Well, I was able to get on in the Mac client (Windows crashed immediately on login), and was promptly blasted with voice requests that I remove flexiprims because they were crashing people. This is a problem for three reasons:

    1. the changes for sculpies make flexiprims crash.
    2. voice is enabled by default, WITH the mic “hot”.
    3. It’s not obvious that voice is enabled by default!

The privacy implications of people logging in at a “hot” mic the first time are obviously bad.

Voice shouldn’t be enabled by default, when enabled, the mic shouldn’t be “hot” by default, and whether it’s enabled or not it must be obvious who is talking and using it. That is, even if you DO NOT have voice enabled you should see who does.

  85. 85 Ali Maltz Says:

Can’t wait for sculpties or voice.

If all the developers were pulled off implementing new features to fix old bugs, it would *not* fix the old bugs any faster. Programming is difficult, and as you add more people to the problem, effective communication between team members becomes more difficult — so let them deal with new features instead!

While you could expect two people to build a wall in about half the time that one person could, 100 programmers cannot fix twice as many bugs as 50 programmers in a given period of time. Read “The Mythical Man Month” for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mythical_Man-Month

  86. 86 Jaime Hocken Says:

    “* Voice in Second Life”

Will this be a option to have on or off?

  87. 87 Grow Says:

Crashes just after logging in. Time to cash in the L$ and head for the competition.

  88. 88 discodisco Says:

Am I the only one that think implementing “sculpties”, a feature that requires very expensive outside tools is a major shift in the balance of the SL landscape. The coolest thing about SL was always that everything you see was created in-world using the client itself. Now creators will be an elite group of people who can afford this highly specialized software.
I for one would be much happier to see this new feature put on hold until the bugs are fixed and things are stable and the ability to use this feature can be put in the hands of the average user (built into the client). I am starting to worry that the line we are going to keep seeing from now on is “we open sourced it so you do the work”.

  89. 89 onionpencil musashi Says:

yes there are issues in beta, that’s why these things are not on the main grid yet. yes the flexi crash needs fixing. i’m sure they know that.. i agree voice prolly should not start with default full on. yes i sure hope they work harder on fixing the existing issues. that said, even w/o the first clue about maya. i’m in LOVE with the sculpties. 8D and i like voice. i also like that i don’t have to use voice everywhere or all the time, since i have no intention of doing so. if LL can get rid of more of the lag and issues and get these new toys in, i can be a happy child 8D

  90. 90 Keiko Rau Says:

One last thing on the Age verification thing…

Why do we even need an Adult Flag?

If you introduce verification as part of the signup to the main grid, as you say, arent we then all adults here? I mean if the main grid is for over 18’s only as stated in your post, its done, finished. - No need to further tag land because everyone is already an adult, right?

Clearly LL hasnt thought this through - its obviously come from management who have a high level overview of how things work, but little actual understanding of whats really happening at the GUI.

Ive never understood why the main grid has Mature and PG anyway… Shouldnt there simply just be the main (over 1 8) grid and the teen grid? That would seem so much easier to manage. Credit card verification would seperate those two marvellously.

    And finally,
I doubt many 15 year olds have a platinum visa card, so I wont be expecting to have to provide LL with any further information than I have already provided. If I am you can kiss my annual subscription, tier, Lindex fees, classified fees, and any other income you get from me goodbye, as SL has already started down the slipperly slope, and this is one more move towards it becoming a police state - somewhere I have no intention of living.

Your world, legal team’s imagination? - No thanks.

  91. 91 Selene Says:

This is about the age verified system. I can’t post in other blog so its going here.
Buying lindens with my cc should have been enough verification. No way in HELL will I give out my SSN for this game. I’ve already dealt with identity theft in real life. A lot of my friends said they won’t do this either.
Also as regarding the different charges for verification.. Why should we be charged at all? You want to do this YOU pay for it. I am all for keeping teens off the grid but this process is just flawed. Why should basic and prem be charged diff fees for same service of verification? Again why should we pay at all?

  92. 92 FireFox Bancroft Says:

@68 & 69, this is a blog post about the current Beta Grid, not Age Verification, please stay on topic. Please don’t waste space talking about Age verification. If you want to discuss more about it go to the forum under current version. Thats what it’s for.

Speaking of Beta Client, I can’t get the Beta client to download, I get a 404 page instead. Any ideas to get around this?

Beta is crashing pretty hardcore. Looks like fun but ya gotta stay in long enough to make that so. A few giant prim sculpties laying around. Not sure if that is the problem though. It is pretty freaky looking all the way around as evidenced here.

LL need to start listening to its paying customers as competition is heating up and many other virtual universes will be launch in the near future….

i bet those responcible company will listen to they PAYING customers and probably will never let they software out of beta in such a pity state as SL is.

SL is no longer alone…. and won’t survive with such as bad software.

    1. Fix the client multiples stability issues.
    2. Optimize your code…. ANY other 3D software will not even considere using a 3d technology that do an avarage of 20 FPS on a high end machine
    3. All user who have payment info on file via CC should be considered “Age Verified”. It is bad anough to have personnal information sitting on LL “proven” un-secure server, i sure don’t want to be FORCED by LL to supply personnal info to un-trusted and non disclosed 3rd party.
    4. The recent extra code to sign up on SL website, the reminder to use good password, the plan to FORCE US AGAINS OUR WILL to surrender personnal information to a 3rd party…. Is LL is hidding something? Have they been hack (again), did they receive legal notice about kids on the main grid? are they been blackmailled?

it’s hard to even think of supporting LL in any way as they keep people in the dark and LIE in the open… as they have said they have eard US loud and clear about the open letter project, but instead of announcing a future release with less bugs.. they added not one but two new bugs ridden features! Way to listen to your PAYING consumer LL

Second Life: your world, our legal team’s imagination (well restriction), our bugs.

SL is the closs thing to a virtual universe we have… good thanks LL did not Ddsign The Matrix, Neo whould have a easy job and the whole trilogy whoudl have been dull to watch.

Having to give more personal data than my creditcardnumber is far from reasonable! End unverified accounts and you have your age verification!

    Thank you for not listening!

  101. 101 Taimi Valeeva Says:

I hate this idea with a passion, I really truly love my second life, but I am very bothered by the direction Linden Labs is sometimes hell bent to go. Each upgrade there are more and more features taken away, you as a company have my Credit Card details on file(which is a step many people feel dreadfully uncomfortable with), tell me if you don’t think I’m 18 and I’ve been playing to game over 6 mouths who’s credit card am I using(the stock answer would be a relatives). So there is your hole in this plan if I am hading behind false information now then I would just do the same in future. Then we come to credibility and a US company taking personal details in the current environment is not going to fly with a lot of people, I say this after having spent the last 10 years in the US, I am far from anti American, but the majority of those not from within your shores do not believe that any there interests and welfare will be considered after having given up there information. Please LL stop this madness to quote that great American Rodney King “can’t we all just get along”
