You say "As part of your subscription fee" does this mean that it is a annual payment to have this? Or is it a one time fee?

If it's a annual payment, will it be taken out like a parcel listing is? Or is it taken in USD out of the account?

If it's taken out in USD, how are Lifetime's going to pay for this? Will we be charged annually in USD for age verification?

While I am in favour of protecting minors and keeping SL adults only, I don't see how this methodology will work.

When I first joined SecondLife, in order to restrict the world from minors you had to provide credit card information. This system has been used by many companies for many years and has been accepted. This was an age verification process which many of us have already undertaken, however some minors still got through.

If a minor can use someones credit card and charge $10 to it and get away with it, what is to stop them using someones passport or drivers license?

I am from the UK and we do not have ID cards additionally many people do not own a drivers licence or a passport myself included as one of those people. To my knowledge you only need a drivers license to drive a car.. and a passport to travel between countries.. I don't quite see the connection between those and playing SecondLife.

I am also shocked at the extra cost we will be charged for the imposed age verification, I am a premium member and an estate owner, is $2500 a year not enough?

Additionaly I am also confused as to how an adult is defined as many different reigons and territories have different methods of classification.

This sounds all too familiar to China's attempts to verify their MMORPG gamers which like almost every other form of online age restriction is fallable.

Why don't we instead go back to the old method of CC verification? At least that way if a minor uses someone elses card they may notice the charge on their CC bill. It seems to be much fairer to your global customers and also seems to have about the same chance of success.

What?

I am an adult and do not possess a credit card, nor do I have any form of national ID number that I would ever dare give to anyone for something so trivial as Second Life.

Thanks a lot, Lindens. Thanks for nothing.

As a UK resident, I do not feel comfortable about giving personal details to an as yet unamed data collection company, which I assume is US based.

With the current climate in the US as regards to Bush's evesdropping on data communications to aid the War on Terror(tm), I do not want to end up on some US government database as belonging to a virtual porn-ridden community run by a bunch of subversive godless burnt-out californian commie hippies (Ann Coulter is hawt!!).

Could Linden Labs please state as a matter of urgency the name of the company that's going to do the data verification, so concerned residents can start to do some checking on their history.

I have one question I live in the USA in a state like 16 others that has made it againest the law to ask any person to use their Social Security number as proof of anything.Business can no longer ask for them or can access a persons credit reports. This was done to stop identity theft. Now you want us to give them to a third party? Just asking is breaking the law here.

"Um, can you tell us who this company is that we are supposed to hand our social security numbers and such over to? Because that is not something I am going to do lightly."

You are completely insane. You ask international customers to hand over identity stuff like passport IDs or something like to a 3rd party they don't have a contract with? With the track record of american companies for losing their data to some script kiddie? That's just plain nuts. LL itself couldn't keep their data to their own servers, and we should hand over hard identity data to someone?

I have 2 giggles trying to read through all the comments. #1. The majority of comments I've seen in recent months about age-verification were begging SL to do age verification. Now it's coming, and they're gonna have experts do it, but people are freaking out! wtf. (P.S. No, use of a credit card has nothing to do with proving adult age.) #2. It's always hilarious how many comments are people asking a question that was clearly addressed in the original announcement. This seems to happen with every SL announcement.
