Preview of Second Life 1.14.1(1) now up on the Beta Test Grid

Monday, April 2nd, 2007 at 4:34 PM by: Joshua Linden

We’ve updated the Beta Test Grid with a preview of the next version of Second Life - 1.14.1. We are currently aiming to release this version next week, on Wednesday April 11th. (FYI: this week’s downtime is for some maintenance work, but no new client or server code.)

We’ve been fortunate enough to have several server updates and optional viewer updates in the last few months without requiring everyone to update viewers at the same time. However, the 1.14.1 release changes the “message template” (client/server protocol) and hence will require an updated viewer.

In 1.14.1 there is a new LSL function, several fixes submitted by the open source community, and other bug fixes. The biggest changes, however, are hopefully (!) invisible, and involve the deprecating the overloaded back-end system responsible for group IM and Group chat and replacing them with more distributed and scalable counterparts.

There are several more bug fixes coming for 1.14.1, and we expect to post new viewers by Wednesday that represent the final change set for next week’s release.

Release notes with the changes in 1.14.1 so far follow…

Please note: This preview is currently affecting the voice beta. When you launch the voice viewer, you will be prompted for an update. The subsequent update does not include voice functionality. If you wish to continue using voice chat, please make sure you are using the latest voice release, available from http://www.secondlife.com/community/bhear.php

Anything that helps smooth things out and fixes things is good news

  2. 2 DR Dahlgren Says:

All great fixes of annoying little bugs in most cases. I will go right now and give it a whirl.

Thanks, this kind of communication, up front and in advance, is the way to do things.

  3. 3 Newb Mountain Says:

Is there a problem i keep getting asked to update , hmm cant get in voice beta either

  4. 4 Julitcha Messmer Says:

It´s nice to get some bugs fixed. BUT, the update comes with one. I can´t enlarge my uploaded pictures anymore! (and a lot of friends who did the update too). I´m trying to find how to roll back to the previous version. I need to enlarge my pictures.
Hope to see something about that here on the blog.
    Thank you.

  5. 5 Mathieu Basiat Says:

i am submitting this to the bug report, but here goes:

When working with a RAW file, downloading a RAW file from a Sim does not properly show the property borders in channel 4, and vice versa, uploading a RAW file that includes greyscale values in channel 4 does not subdivide the sim.

  6. 6 Tsukasa Keiko Says:

    YES

  7. 7 Usagi Musashi Says:

Oh well let`s hope this one grwos into a more stable client. Good luck joshua

  8. 8 Lucey Grigg Says:

    OKAY I’m kinda excited!!!!!!!!!

Maybe i hope tommorow when i get home from work i’ll be able to play :)

  9. 9 Reinhart Mokeev Says:

Hey Newb Mountain i got the same crap as well…

  10. 10 RobKubrick Says:

Please consider the release of a secondary client that does not require OpenGL 2.0 . True, 2.0 provides a large number of enhancements including some performance, and many quality - not too mention the reducing the client footprint.

However, a large number of video chipsets, and especially drivers do not support it. In particular, Laptop/Tablets in many cases are not able to use Vendor (nvidia/ati) released drivers which allow for OpenGL 2.0, and are left hoping for manufacturer release.

One of SL’s great accomplishment is it’s relative-platform-independence - which reduced by forcing 2.0.

For nvidia users in this situation - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ - hosts modified drivers (Release 75 and above support 2.0)

  11. 11 DR Dahlgren Says:

Just a heads up, there is a parcel listed for sale at Balance 98,42, that shows - There has been an error while fetching…. that has been this way since Beta was redone the last time. Was it put there as a joke, or has it just been off the radar? What ever happened to selling the land on Beta btw? Have not seen any available in a long time.

  13. 13 Charlie Vanalten Says:

Well Ive downloaded the Beta test grid and tried it out only to be confounded by being logged out 3 times and unable to move after a short while. If this is anything to go by this so called up grade will be the downfall of SL.There was no packet loss or bandwidth problems,so I assume the fault lays in the program.

  14. 14 Vincent Nacon Says:

I’m starting to notice your pattern for update plans. Best to give the beta grid more than 2 bloody days, right before the public release. A week or 2 at best.

Other wise, people on Main grid will be a bitch. Complaining about minor bugs and other problems that may causes them more business/money/events related problems. Try to keep in mind what the beta grid is really for. Not just some 2 days before release “preview”.

But of course, haven’t tried the beta yet, which I will after this post. (hope it’s all good this time around)

  15. 15 Feynt Mistral Says:

Seems the alpha sorting issue is still there. Actually there’s two I noticed, and both are limited to certain hemispheres (though one is different than the other).

The first one is the hemisphere from NNW -> West -> SSE. When your camera is looking into this hemisphere, closely arranged prims with external alpha layers appear to layer in reverse order. For example, my new avatar’s head is made up of two spheres, with the outside sphere textured with a single transparent pixel, while the inside sphere is dimpled and has no transparency. Facing into said hemisphere renders them in reverse order and the outside sphere’s texture is blanked out. Facing NNW -> East -> SSE shows them in proper order and with the outside sphere’s texture intact.

The second problem is larger scale rendering of alphas, which I noticed the other night in Abbotts while standing on the transparent sunscreen over the planes. Facing West -> North -> East will layer my tail properly over the screens. Facing East -> South -> West layers them in reverse order.

  16. 16 Ralph Doctorow Says:

Please fix the vehicle motion stuttering if that is at all possible. The JIRA notes claim it is fixed and awaiting deployment.

  17. 17 Vincent Nacon Says:

HEY!! You never mention about the joystick camera view in Client menu. ;)

I hope youre planning on giving control input via LSL with the joystick. Cars and Planes need them very very badly.

  18. 18 Dytska Vieria Says:

“Fixed Undo resetting position only on root prim”

    That is very good!

But, what about First Look program???

  19. 19 Kahni Poitier Says:

Oh yes, please, don’t implement OpenGL 2.0. Heck, in fact, even DX 9.0 is too much of a requirement. You should re-write the entire system so it’ll run on DX5, because not everyone can afford the latest technology.

In fact, some of us might not have good video cards at all. How about downgrading some of these graphics a bit, to smooth out data transfers and lag, and make everyone run 640×480 in 256 colors. Well wait, some people might not be able to run that either, so let’s knock it down to 16 colors, so we can cater to the players that haven’t bothered to upgrade their computers since Windows 95.

    Yes, please.

Let’s cater to those of us with the LEAST compatible machines.

  20. 20 Dougal Jacobs Says:

It is no longer possible to access voice beta. The voice beta client that this blog entry links to prompts for a mandatory update to the non-voice beta client.

  21. 21 Mavia Hian Says:

Please don’t require a client update for Mac unless the performance issues have been resolved. 1.13.3.2 is usable; 1.14.0.1 is not. The framerate was reduced to impossible levels.

  22. 22 Gaybot Foxley Says:

    Well great…

  23. 23 DR Dahlgren Says:

Just noticed my inventory, not sure if what I see is good, an feature or an unintended feature.

When I open my inventory, all the “System” or SL folders are at the top, starting with animations and ending with the trash, library is still at the bottom, unless I uncheck “Always sort folders by name” and sort on date.

I can see where this might be beneficial, but I guess time will tell.

    DRD

  24. 24 Gaius Goodliffe Says:

@12: That was fixed a couple weeks ago. Same update that broke WarpPos, in fact. Sort of a mixed blessing that day. :p

  30. 30 Simon Nolan Says:

Joshua, the Voice Beta download is still at 1.14.1.108. I downloaded it again, just for giggles, and it still wouldn’t let me connect to the beta grid. Any word on an update from the beta folks so we can play with voice again?

The voice beta are not up for beta grid at the moment, it seem. They didn’t say this current beta version will have those feature. You gonna have to wait.

  34. 34 Ann Otoole Says:

maybe we will never see that idiotic voice thing again. maybe they do read the blog comments after all. no wait! we have to wait for iVoice before we get voip in sl! and one day we will only be able to run sl on an iphone too!

  39. 39 huegli Says:

Whatever prevents SL to be infected by this anti-virtuality, anti-roleplay griefing tool, they call voice chat, will be greatly welcome! At least any delay gives the online WORLD a bit more time before it will die and degraded to an online GAME.

  40. 40 Andy Says:

Yay for llStringTrim() … we’ve needed that for a while, thanks folks!

  41. 41 Albert Kwak Says:

Er, perhaps it is too early in the morning but you say:

If you wish to continue using voice chat, please make sure you are using the latest voice release…”

but I still get Download or Quit when trying to login to the Voice Beta.
The download is then of the Beta Test Grid Viewer which doesn’t have Chat.

    Please explain.

@ 8 RobKubrick _ Well said Rob, OpenGL 2 affects a lot of people, not just laptops/tablets (mmm SL for Newton?) but iMac and Mac Mini users too…

@10 Vincent Nacon - umm, April 11th is 8 days away by my calculations. Fair enough, except they do continue updating that up to the wire, it will be 1.14.1(10) by the time it’s ready for the main grid…

Still, a client for iPhone would be yet another reason to get one :)

  45. 45 Masami Kuramoto Says:

    @ RobKubrick

    You mention:

“However, the 1.14.1 release changes the “message template” (client/server protocol) and hence will require an updated viewer.”

Well, 1.14 works on one machine, but completely brings down my laptop (my newer, preferred machine to use - only 4 months old), and I’ve had to revert (after a lot of hassle) to 1.13. If you make a new release *mandatory* and it isn’t totally rock-solid, and once again not only crashes but brings the entire PC down, I am not only going to ask for all my funds back, but I’m going to drive to your offices to do it.

Nevermind - did a search and found it. I suppose I’ll get used to it but it would not be my preference.

  62. 62 Chocolata Oxberger Says:

I’m scared to even try this one. I have already submitted a report via help about my pc crashing with 1.14. I can only hope there is either is a work-around on the open gl 2.0 issue.

Hey Josh, by any chance that we can pry you up more information about this “Joystick Camera” found in Client menu? Not that it’s a bad thing, but a very very neat feature for film making. Hoping it would continue onto giving joystick input for movement and control via LSL.

  67. 67 Simon Nolan Says:

@ Gillian - Joshua’s link had a period at the end of the URL that broke the link. But glad you found it anyway!

/me thinks Gillian will make good contribs to Jira.

  68. 68 RobKubrick Says:

Things that would be nice for building tools:

Shortcut key to open build window - in Edit mode
When in ‘Edit Linked Parts’, allow single-prim objects to work as function as normal (shift-key duplication, etc.)

Keeping Inventory up-to-date. When changing Inventory Names in Edit-Object-Texture, the Inventory is not updated. A ‘Refresh’ is possible, by doing any search, but there is not refresh button.

  69. 69 RobKubrick Says:

Also, Edit-Object Texture, once you’ve changed the texture with ‘Apply Immediately’ checked. Then you select another object/prim. The same window is brought up, but ‘Apply Immediately’ is not checked. This should follow the last/default setting shouldn’t? Would speed up editing a bit.

    Thanks,
    Rob

  70. 70 Gillian Waldman Says:

@Simon - Yeah, Jira’s my friend. We got a big “stutter” bug squashed there :)

  71. 71 Results Tiki Says:

Has anyone noticed if 1.14.1 uses less bandwidth (I think due to less texture caching) than 1.14.0.1? I’m afraid to try 1.14.1. While it may be relatively minor compared to crashes at login, having more bandwidth x 30,000 clients may swamp SL in different ways.

  72. 72 Huns Says:

Someone broke sound queueing two and a half months ago. What’s the ETR on that? This bug (VWR-42) has plenty of votes. In fact it’s the 4th most popular out of all open issues, and 2nd if you ignore things that are either new feature requests or trivial UI bugs.

Kudos on adding a trim function, by the way. That’ll save me a few hundred bytes in places where I can use it.

  75. 75 Brett Finsbury Says:

It would be nice if we could import drawings from computer aided drafting programs. Build a 3d model of a building etc. texture it and upload it. So many more tools available as well as speed in building and being able to back up your work.

  76. 76 Brett Finsbury Says:

Not sure if its the heavy load on the beta grid but there is some bad juju beans out there. Cannot login when I do crash after 1 or 2 min. Seems to be the topic of conversation out there when you do arrive. people not moving or daring to do anything.
To bad last weekend on the beta was a great experiance. Friendly people standing around a camp fire talking like you would in RL.
Actually felt for a few minutes I was able to leave the house and enjoy some social interaction.
Guess even with all the bugs and problems I still put up with Sl.
Ill trade a world I can walk, dance and heck even fly lol for my present world.
Just hope the next release has the magic touch that fixes all the problems.

  81. 81 Andrew Tyson Says:

How is it, I’m about to try it, but I don’t want to be too surprised.

  82. 82 Bianca Kendall Says:

How weird! That just cut off the first part of what I said. Anyway, I just made the point that my previous comment was aimed at both #76 and 77.

Would have been nice to just be able to edit it, but… not an option, unfortunately.

  83. 83 Sir Darragh Says:

I think ETC. pretty well summed up the Login issue..:)

  84. 84 Bianca Kendall Says:

@81 Yep…really strange one. I did manage to get in earlier, after trying for over an hour. But I didn’t get the Login failed message then..it just sat for a very long time with the login bar going nowhere fast. Once I got in, I couldn’t pay for anything in-world, because when I tried, the system just timed out, so I decided to relog in the end (silly me - thought it wouldn’t be a problem because the initial rush would be over). But yeah..just get that Login failed message all the time now. Very frustrating…

  85. 85 Gillian Waldman Says:

Have had issues logging into beta grid since Monday evening. No problems on the main grid.

  86. 86 Usagi Musashi Says:

beta was a nightmare got in after 1 hours “RUTH” then shot in to space with sim lag…….what a joke!

  87. 87 Joshua Linden Says:

The database server for the beta grid catastrophically failed at around 8:30 on Wednesday morning, while most of us were occupied with the main grid maintenance. We rebuilt it by end-of-day Wednesday with a fresh copy of the main grid database.

  88. 88 Joshua Linden Says:

We have a new build of 1.14.1 coming soon which has fixes for the ATI x300/600 crash-on-startup issues.

  89. 89 Linda Brynner Says:

YES, I love you Joshua !!
Let’s pray that it will work also.

  90. 90 Ralph Doctorow Says:

What is the status of VWR 86 Jerky Movement …?

JIRA shows it as fixed, however it definitely is not in the main grid or the Beta grid.

Did this get dropped or lost somehow? It really is a very bad thing.

    Just a suggestion Joshua.
Ehmm, why not keeping 1.13 fully supported until 1.14.1 is really proven to run on a X300/X600 card?
It’s always a prey if problems will be really resolved, so we have time to test and report problems. Meanwhile we can go inlife with 1.13 for you to sort things out further.
I mean, I’m only dealing in sl for a total value of appr. US$ 1400.

ever since I downloaded the last update, I can’t stay logged on to SL. How about a fix for THAT? I’ve rebooted, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled. I’ve cleared the cache. I’ve shut down every other process. I have plenty of functionality on my laptop that should allow SL to run without a problem. But yet, I can’t stay on and haven’t been able to since I downloaded the last update. Can we get a fix that will really be a fix?

I’M SICK AND TIRED OF THIS. I wanted to buy a $100USD land this morning.

I could not buy linden for 4 days, then I fixed it by deleting my CC info and entering it again.

BUT this morning, I decided to buy a land and I went and upgraded to premium and then tried to buy a land it happened again and could not buy more linden once again! I got a different error message than the first time. WTF I’M SO ANGRY.

@89: Have you guys worked around the lack of support for OpenGL 2.0 by some laptop manufacturers with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700?

  99. 99 Jerry Oranos Says:

    Hi Everyone..

I still can’t get to SL using the new release 1.14, and therefore tried the beta one to see if future have something install for me, beside the install itself, nothing changes… SL crash even before I get the main screen. It say it detect hardware configuration, and it might be a conspiracy with my computer shop, it crash…. it send linden a crash logger report..

I have a serious question, I could live wonderfully with version 1.13, yes, it did crash occasionaly, and it was a pain in the neck sometimes.. but it WORKED. Where can I get it back, or in other words, is there a way NOT to upgrade the viewer all the time? I am not one of those that is against progress, but when progress is not working, I am the first to admitt it.. And versuon 1.14 DON’T work for me.
