1.14.0 Known Issues: Drivers, VBO, ATI X300/X600 notebooks, and other woes
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007 at 5:43 PM by: Steve LindenSome people have been having difficulty with the 1.14.0 update. A very small percentage of people it turns out, however they are very understandably concerned and upset. We are doing our best to address these concerns.
Below are some suggestions and workarounds for people having issues:
First, some general guidelines:
- Update your graphics drivers. Many common problems are solved by updating to the latest graphics card drivers, including the “rainbow pattern” bug. If the OpenGL Version listed under Help > About Second Life is less than 2.0 you should definitely update your drivers. See How do I get the latest drivers for my graphics card?
- If you have a graphics card that is more than two years old, try disabling VBO and/or Avatar Vertex Programs. See Resolving issues with Second Life 1.14.0.
Another problem we have seen with this release:
- Some laptops with ATI X300 or X600 graphics cards are crashing before they even get to the login screen. Oddly, this crash is happening in the FMOD audio library and we have no idea why. There is a workaround: add “-noaudio” to your Second Life shortcut. This will disable audio in Second Life which is not ideal, but will at least allow it to run. See Resolving issues with Second Life 1.14.0 for detailed instructions.
If you are experiencing any of these problems, please comment this entry with the following information:
- Operating System and Manufacturer
- Graphics Card
- Whether or not you were able to solve the problem.
Please direct other comments or concerns to the Second Life 1.14.0 Viewer Released entry, we are still tracking those comments and I would like to keep these comments as concise as possible to provide useful information to people having problems with 1.14.0.
Thanks!
-Steve

Steve,
How about posting the 1.13.2 build as an optional download??? Maybe we want to try out 1.14 without burning our bridges or losing our entire audio!!!!!

If I go online using a machine with a 1-13 version, I can do a search for my club listings and find all of them. If I use a machine on 1-14, I can find none of them. I assume that those who are running 1-14 must think I have closed down operations at all 10 of my Fey’s Fantasies clubs. Help!

Ever since upgrading to the latest version of SL, I always crash. My laptop screen freezes, the I get the dreaded “blue screen of death” that points at my video driver: nv4_disp.dll.
This did not happen prior to the new SL version. Help!
March 28th, 2007 at 6:33 PM
Have this problem. D: My laptop keeps crashing when I’m on Second Life, but usually when I try to open either the inventory, search, or map… maybe anything on the bottom, I’m not too sure; not too keen on crashing and then having to restart again. ^^;;
Um… operating system is Windows XP, Dell Inspiron 640 laptop, and I’m not sure what my graphics card is, but everything I crash, I get the message that the “ialmrnt5 display driver” is not working correctly, and then when I turn on the laptop again, I get the message to update my Video Driver… but this laptop is less than four months old, and there’s no way I can update anything this early. O.o;;

Hi. Having problems since the 1.14 upgrade. Assume what I am seeing is what you are referring to as “rainbow” effect. Running a 256 mb NVidia on PCIe slot. Card was new last fall. The workaround recommended is having no effect, after several re-logs. Any other ideas?

As a FirstLook user, I want to share with everyone that throughout the FirstLook testing of the new release *MANY* problems with my Intel 945GM (laptop video) were resolved - I suspect others’ problems were fixed, too. So, what was released was definitely a much improved version compared to earlier ones made available through the FirstLook programme.
It is disappointing to see that crashes continue to this day, and I experience them, too. I send many crash reports a day due to video problems; and SL is the only application in my system that causes these crashes. There is no doubt that SL pushes the video hardware in ways that other applications typically don’t, but it would be nice to see a more compatible viewer that handles problems more gracefully.
But, like everything else, the Linden folks are tackling a lot of challenges and solving many, many problems. This is particularly challenging as SL’s popularity increases and the systems are stressed constantly. So, I appreciate the Linden folks’ efforts and always look forward to the next viewer release. Some times things improve significantly, some times new problems arise; overall, we’re moving in the right direction. Thanks, Lindens!

I get a message saying my inventory is being moved to a faster database, but right after I get an error massage saying that it was not possible complet the transform… WHAT’S HAPPENING??? I have tryied everything to get support for this and nothing happened yet. The problem is not the computer, ’cause the same computer is perfectly loging in my brother’s SL account. That was the most wonderful update you have ever done!!! CONGRATS!!! At least if I wont be able to access my account again I want all the money I have already spent in that “game” so long back to me. And it was not little. My SL name is ANGELINACAROL GAGLIANO. I still hope you listen to me!

This is with a Pentium 4, though I don’t know why it says “Not supported”. Anyway, processor use is at 100% since the “upgrade”, and I can’t do anything. Even the mouse moves funny when SL is running in the foreground. So naturally I’m reluctant to install the upgrade on my home PC, since it’s only a Celeron with 512MB RAM.
Oh, and not that it matters to me, but I can confirm Fey Lamar’s report regarding his clubs. The search works fine on my home PC with 1.13, but not with 1.14. Makes you wonder what else is missing from the search…
And as Alan Edelman said, it sure would be nice if we had the option of going back.

My laptop crashes when I reach certain points in the sim from a paricular angle. So far, approaching the point from another angle prevents so many crashes. I hope a solution can be found until maufacturers provide driver updates sufficient for the job!
March 28th, 2007 at 7:16 PM
If SOME people used the viewer as much as the tester of first looks has. There are still many issues with this viewer…..Look even high end to low ends graphic cards are having issues….This client is far from perfect….
then again some people will say just about anything without a resonable braincell in their heads……With any IQ for understanding the UI…..
March 28th, 2007 at 7:46 PM
Well…I’m one of the small highly upset crybabies
Whattya want when you threaten to cut off my supply of digital crack
Anyways, yeah driver updates most def help things. Water…woo hoo!!
Still I stand by my comment in the 1.14 announce thread that a warning/comment about this issue would be helpful, esp when there are indications its was a known issue during First look stage.
I wouldn’t have spent 2 hours whining about the sky falling down in between GFX card swap outs and driver download/reload/sideload skullbuggery
Anyways, UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS
So again, sorry for being a cranky ba#$%d sometimes,,,, but then again I get calls from clients when systems go down unexpectedly…so…it’s just the circle of software life
Keep up the (mostly) good work.

I crash after about 20 minutes in SL also. I clear cache, I relog and send a crash report every time, then it happens again after 20 mins. Packet loss sometimes up to 55%, usually runs around 10-30%. I have my firewall and virus scan turned off, as well as everything else I can possibly turn off on the computer. I have the graphics card settings at default. I have the SL preferences set as low as possible (the draw distance is set at 64, the cache is 1000, the max bandwidth at 750), with many of the options off (shiny, bumpmapping, local lighting, avatar vertex, ripple water, etc. all off). I still crash sometimes on log in, and usually after 20 mins in SL or when teleporting, accessing pop up menus like texture chooser or people chooser or when buying things. Almost every time I use the client to query the database (accessing inventory!) it crashes me. I just don’t know what else to do, other than buy another computer–my fourth since I joined SL

Thanks for all the hard work!
March 28th, 2007 at 8:08 PM
Well, First Look worked great for me, but this release will not work for me. After about 10 minutes the client freezes up every time, and sometimes crashes the whole computer, even a blue screen error sometimes. Drivers are quite up to date.

I have an HP Pavilion zd8000 notebook (Windows XP and X600 framebuffer) that’s been running SL stably until today after upgrading to 1.14.0. I can login and things seem fine, but as soon as I move the camera around it crashed. The SecondLife.log file would have a line about “BAD TEXTURE in cache” at the end of it. I’ve tried adjusting the cache size and clearing it several times but the behaviour doesn’t change and it’s a repeatable crash every time. Disabling graphics features has not helped, nor has disabling the audio as was suggested.
The ATI drivers will not load onto my notebook, as the chipset is integrated onto the logic board and I have to use the HP-supplied drivers. HP has been very slow to update drivers, especially on discontinued hardware; the last driver available on HP’s site is over six months old.
March 28th, 2007 at 8:23 PM
1.14.0 is a complete non-starter. This is a recurrence of the same problem I reported with the FLV a few releases ago. The very most recent FLV releases, including the current version 1.13.4 (59748), *does* work. The FLV has other issues however, such as I cannot open *any* attachments (ie. notecards, textures, objects) contained in Group Notices, avatar tags are not displayed, and mouseovers do not display object/vendor/avatar information.
The problem is the instant hang/crash on startup before getting to the viewer login It’s an Apple laptop with an ATI Radeon X1600 (note: not X300 or X600)

Mac OS X 10.4.9

There has been no update on the original Grid Update notice about this issue and I have not received a reply to either my email or my voice message. What’s going on? I have tried 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 and neither works.

This new viewer is a nightmare for me
I wouldn’t have installed it if I had been able to use the old version any longer, but ever since it was released I could no longer log in with the old one.
Message I kept getting was “login failed, otpional version 1.4…..”
So I downloaded it and installed it, ever since that I crash even more, texture load fails all the time - even if textures are loaded they will disappear again, and will be loaded again… starts all over all the time. Some don’t load at all, so I can no longer read textured signs etc.
Avis look like crap, got somehow better when disabling vertex and vbo, but still nothing like it looked before.
Let’s not start with crashing here, because that’s gotten a lot worse too, it looks like the new version needs even more resources.
My computer is a desktop version, but has the X600 graphics card that was mentioned for the laptops above (xp sp2, 3 Ghz).
The probs I had before are nothing compared to what it’s like atm, I just wish I could still go online with the old version - anyone has a clue why I can no longer use it while others can?

2 GB RAM
3.4 GHz EE CPU
Latest Dell ATI graphics drivers (ATI does not provide direct support for Dell systems such as this one, so the Dell driver is the latest that can be installed. The ATI installer checks and will not install on this machine).
No go. Will not load. Crashes before login screen.
Yesterday I reported this after first install of 1.14. Then I uninstalled everything - 1.14, FirstLook, did a cold restart of the machine from power off, reinstalled 1.14, then another power off restart and it worked.
Today I got into SL a couple of times. Now it is back to crash before login screen.
I have tried the “-noaudio” switch and that does not seem to have done anything to resolve the issue.
Is there any way to get 1.13, which worked just fine, while you guys figure out what happened with 1.14???
Thanks in advance,
Joel

In build mode, when I have an object selected in tool edit, and I select any object with right-click, take copy, the object does not get copied to inventory. I must close edit tool and then it works. Repeats every time.

It seems so many people talk and don’t listen!
Provide your system information - it very easy, just click on Help, then About second life, then copy everything in top window to clipboard and paste it here.
Simply to say it does not work is not enough information to help anyone and you may say nothing at all even better!
If you cannot get to Help, about second life, you do have a problem, suggest to get the latest video card drivers!

My alt, Journey Jewell, is perfect since the new version was installed but my active avie is a noob and has been for two days. I got a problem with local lightings and seems to be with purple or close to puple textures…. with local lighting on, the textures turns nearly white and looks distorted. Local lighting off… and the colors look fine. BRIGHT enabled on the texture doesnt affect the above. however BRIGHT enabled does make all the textures way vibrant… more vibrant then what they were before… as if they were nuked! glowing….
not sure if this is related to teh “rainbow” affect.
One other thing is lately my computer FREEZES when i use SL during peak times (seems to be related during those times). i can be on it all night long from 1am to 7am and not have a prob. log on around 2pm (all SLT) and everyday it freezes… like the whole computer locks up. I thought it was memory, nope new memory and it still does that. Hard drive is nearly brand new. Brand new PSU, case sides are all off (cooling is fine) can’t figure it out.
Other people i have talked to have had similiar problems as this. SEEMS to be related with IE7 ( i usually have this open at the time it freezes) but none the less my computer only freezes (locks up) when SL is used.
comments?

Ok. Any suggestions to fix this would be REALLY welcome. To attempt to resolve these issues, I have done the following:
-Uninstalled 1.14 and reverted to previous version (didn’t work)
-Updated graphics driver (didn’t work)
-Purchased brand new laptop to try logging on in order to get my SLmack fix (didn’t work)
-Screamed randomly in frustration at my new laptop and the guy at the late-night Wendy’s drive through window where I went to get some food (didn’t work)
So here’s the issues:
I log in with a woman’s body shape which is not so great as I am not a woman either in RL or SL. My inventory won’t load. Chat in virtually any interesting area (i.e. area where there is someone besides myself) doesn’t come through. IM’s appear only selectively. My friends list shows people offline who are online and standing next to me and others as online who are actually NOT online (ok-so maybe all my “friends” don’t like me and are just avoiding me - could you fix that too?). I am unable to buy or pay for anything. Oh, and 90% of my attempts to teleport fail.
At first I thought that the gender bending was just one of the cool new things about the update, but as the rest of these issues have continued, I’m starting to get suspicious that maybe something is wrong…
I have no idea what any of the rest of this means, but here ya go anyway.

“Some laptops with ATI X300 or X600 graphics cards are crashing before they even get to the login screen. Oddly, this crash is happening in the FMOD audio library and we have no idea why.”
I get something like this on an Acer Aspire 1522 laptop (GEForce Go 5700). The only reliable way I’ve found to get things going again is to do a disk cleanup on drive C: and then to reboot my portable. I sent at least one crash report yesterday while this problem was happening.

Well, I have disabled the audio as you suggested and am no longer crashing upon startup. Thank you for looking into it. I do hope that eventually I’ll be able to hear sound, but you’ve bought yourself time in my book to hopefully figure out what the whole problem is.
i was a mobility radeon x600 user. i’ll just have to open my own music program for the time being.
thanks again, good luck in fixing these problems.

So, the suggestion is to play around a little, waste some evenings on it and simply see what comes out? No way I’m going to burn my fingers on that for sl only. I would suggest always to make one older version available on the website also.
Let’s pray the next update will come soon and will solving the issues

Well I have a solution:-
1) remove Window$
2) install Linux
3) install SL
4) play SL without any problems at all.
I have to say that the Alpha Linux version seems far more stable than the Windows version. I rarely crash at all, once a month maybe..
March 29th, 2007 at 2:43 AM
@15 Girent Robson: “1.14.0 is a complete non-starter. [...] The problem is the instant hang/crash on startup before getting to the viewer login It’s an Apple laptop with an ATI Radeon X1600 (note: not X300 or X600)”
Girent, Make sure you disable the OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects in Preferences -> Adv. Graphics.
I have exactly the same macbook as yours, and I have no problems with the 1.14.0 second life client. In fact.. I love this client, it is much better and even more stable for me than the old version.

I tried the above fixes and I’m still crashing. According to ATI my drivers are current. I did NOT have this issue with 1.13 or whatever that version was before.
Can’t we have that back as an optional download so the game is atleast playable? Or a quick update that will fix this problem, please! Crashing randomly (emptying trash, minimizing to toolbar, restoring to desktop from toolbar, or just clicking on it sometimes) and often is not fun.

I have intermittent problems with 1.14.0.0. Previously I could log in with 35k+ users, last night with 30k+ users it started to put my computer into sleep mode, I re-entered SL to quit the program, because in the past I would be stuck without being able to move or type, however, I was after a few seconds active again without having to quit and re login, but this lasted for 30-40 seconds before it forced my computer into sleep mode once again. This is a new experience.
I haven’t suffered other problems than the usual I have already experienced in previous versions, but a good point is I suffer them less. TP’ing is still an issue, it still timeouts quite a lot. I was logged in with automatic setup options, presently I checking out response with manual changes to that setup, indicated below in brackets. Later I’ll try and enabled VBO.

Since I downloaded the latest update SL freezes either my screen or my whole system regularly. Sometimes after 5 min sometimes I last maybe 20 min.
Sometimes the screen just freezes but the computer is still working in the background (I can still hear music for example or even chat in the new voice chat version while the screen remains frozen). I have to do a hard reboot to get rid of the frozen screen. If I don’t reboot immediatly I either get a black screen followed by a blue screen, or I get the beloved blue screen with the error message “NV4_disp”.

Since moving to the updated release version, each time I shut down SL I get a crash out rather than a clean shut down. This is happening after logout, after the screens all terminate — Windows reports that it had to terminate a thread.
After this happens, I cannot relaunch SL without a reboot first. I get an error indicating that it cannot start the networking process.
This did not happen with any of the first-look render pipeline versions, which I found to be excellent.

I run a club & I can’t hear the audio. Things look funny while on. I have been known to freeze up and crash. All with this new update. I’ll try that. But…it better work because I am tired of having problems for 2 days.

I am getting the crash prior to actiulay getting to the log in screen. A large message pops up but its gone so fast you can’t read any of it. I reverted back to the older virsion and I’m able to get in with no problems.

Yes, the driver problem evidently extends to NVIDIA Geforce 7800 cards.
I have had crash problems since the switch to the new viewer (my system crashed with the old viewer too, but much less). As I have a rather new (almost exactly a year) Dell XPS with a Pent 4 3.40 ghz chip, over 2 gb of RAM, a geforce 7800, a 2005FPW lcd flatscreen, XP media, and broadband hookup, I thought I was well within the system requirements. Like a good girl, I looked at the driver updates issue, and meekly went both to the Dell site and to NVIDIA, speaking with techs at both (yes, I sat on hold). The gist was this: I have the latest and best drivers for all my system from Dell. Although there is a later NVIDIA update, it actually degrades my system’s resolution and does nothing to resolve the crashes in SL. I even let the Dell tech go into my system remotely, and they went through the various drivers. He and his team said the problem is with the SL program, not my system. There is no graphics adapter available, either. Sigh.
My system was set up for Photoshop and some light film and animation work. It should NOT have this issues with SL. This may be it for me in SL… A shame as it was also something I shared with family and friends back in the UK and Europe.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800
I have no problem getting into the game, but when I try to pan camera around too much (give it a heavy load) it freezes my COMPUTER not SL, the entire computer forcing me to hardboot. It is always on heavy load, from either panning around or if i’m loading a heavy lag area (like a club)
I havent tried the work arounds as o
