Second Life 1.14.0 Viewer Released
Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 at 10:51 AM by: Joshua LindenThe Second Life 1.14.0 Viewer is now available for download. Residents should be prompted for an optional update when logging in.
This update includes the render pipeline improvements from the most recent line of “First Look” viewers, as well as many other bug fixes and improvements. See the release notes below for details.
The 1.14.0 update will remain optional for a couple of days while we monitor its effect across the grid. We expect that it will become mandatory by the end of the week. If you are experiencing issues specific to this viewer version, please report them here on the blog; include your location in-world (for specific rendering issues) and system details from Help > About.
UPDATE: Residents who are experiencing viewer crashes or other blocking issues should report them, but can also download the 1.13.3.2 viewers which will be supported during this transition period. The links are:

WoW! that’s a lot of coffee! downloading and going to try it out
March 27th, 2007 at 11:02 AM
You forgot to mention fixing the missing water bug!
March 27th, 2007 at 11:03 AM
YAY, finally First Look is an “official viewer” lol. Now gonna download it and log right in :).
March 27th, 2007 at 11:04 AM
Looks like a heavy update, downloading right now!
March 27th, 2007 at 11:07 AM
I download and get ready to install, and directory is C:\Program Files\SecondLifeFirstLook. Should it not be C:\Program Files\SecondLife?
March 27th, 2007 at 11:11 AM
It looked very good when I read it.
But since I have installed this version it does only one thing:
CRASH!
and not after a few minutes or so, no within first 20 secs…
I hope one of you lindens can help me fix this
(I miss SL already)
March 27th, 2007 at 11:17 AM
Unofortunately I am experiencing an immediate crash with the new 1.14 viewer. I will also post to the support page, but I wanted to simply note that this is going on so other might be able to verify that it is a known problem. Thanks - I look forward to using the new viewer.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:17 AM
at least the offer teleportation is.. working… thanks for the fixes and other bug fixes too
:))))
March 27th, 2007 at 11:20 AM
\Fuck you!
March 27th, 2007 at 11:20 AM
Some indication as to how long this would take to download would be nice!
Clock watching here.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:23 AM
Yes, you have to give a lot of credit to Steve and the other Lindens who worked on this very hard, as well as everyone who went through the ups and downs of using the Firstlook. An extremely good release
March 27th, 2007 at 11:23 AM
After removing FirstLook and standard viewer, install defaults to C:\Program Files\SecondLife…
March 27th, 2007 at 11:25 AM

March 27th, 2007 at 11:31 AM
So far so good. Some files didnt install at first. So I had to remove the old SL Program. And Install new Download. Now I’m in and I see water. Woot. Keep up the good work Lindens.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:32 AM
ummm, not working for me. when i click on SL icon, get immediate crash report, can’t even get to a log in screen
March 27th, 2007 at 11:33 AM
I’ve installed it, after about 5 seconds of moving around, Second Life quits without any warning or anything. I can’t find anything in my logs.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:34 AM
After playing with 1.14.0 lost count so many crashes within just 20 minutes, installed firstlook again 59748 not stable but less hard crashes.
Question, how much bandwith is needed anyway up/down, cause my son is playing wow while i am playing SL?
Regards Adrian
March 27th, 2007 at 11:34 AM
Hi , since I updated the new Second Life version, I crashed 4 times in 20 min, never did befor. What can I do????? Really not good. Can I reload the old version? Can someone help me?
March 27th, 2007 at 11:38 AM

Please help me!!!
March 27th, 2007 at 11:39 AM

March 27th, 2007 at 11:40 AM
I just downloaded the patch and everytime I try to open up SL, it crashes me. It says something about detecting my settings and then it crashes… any suggestions?
March 27th, 2007 at 11:42 AM
I have installed the new version and now cannot login anymore. Second Life crashes systematically before login request :((
March 27th, 2007 at 11:44 AM
SL no longer launches for me - there is a brief message about display settings or something but it is too brief to read. I did not keep a copy of 1.13 and so am locked out of SL and my 2 islands.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:45 AM
Yes, this is my same error - thank you HatHead
March 27th, 2007 at 11:45 AM
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THIS VIEWER A MUST.. IT RUNS WAY SLOWER ON MY MACHINE, AND GRAPHICS LOOK WHITE AND BAD. JUST FIX THE STUFF THAT NEEDS IT FIRST, LIKE THE OBJECT SERVERS, THE TP’S, THE NOTECARDS…… DO I NEED TO GO ON.. WHY ARE THE LINDENS WORKING ON NEW VIEWERS WHEN THEY CAN’T EVEN SEEM TO GET THE BASICS RUNNING IN SL. I AM WONDERING WHAT I PAY MY 9.99 A MONTH PLUS TIER FOR… THIS???
March 27th, 2007 at 11:46 AM
Is there a reason why, on trying to sign in, SL tells me that it has changed my display settings “based on my system configuration” without me telling it to?
I really really don’t like when software makes decisions for me. I don’t mind it “recommending” new settings and allowing me to choose, but I should decide whether to accept or reject the suggestions.
Broccoli
March 27th, 2007 at 11:46 AM
Since downloading this version I have not been able to log in. SL crashes before it fully opens :((( Please help.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:47 AM
Yessiree, grab your partner to do the Linden three step.
One step forward, two steps back, one step forward, two steps back.
That’s some good work. No hair, no money, no ability to search, immobile, and twenty crashes in thirty minutes.
This is the reason I downgraded.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:47 AM
I updated my desktop computer and now it keeps crashing when it starts to load up. I can’t even make it to the login screen. Anyone know whats wrong?
March 27th, 2007 at 11:47 AM
Freezes every 5 minutes or so for 3 or 4 seconds. Including freezing my whole computer, mouse etc. Most times it pops back, once or twice my entire computer has shut down. I have all settings turned down to the absolute minimum. But I left VBO turned on.

upgraded to 1.14… and have crashed 6 times so far, had to give up and try and look for a fix. I can’t get in enough to even see properly.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:52 AM
After I downloaded the viewer and tried to install it, i ran into a problem and said the following:
Error opening file for writing:
static_index.db2
Click to Abort, Retry, Ignore.
and I couldn’t do anything but ignore. Afterwards, trying to log into the server, it said the server was down when the server grid is open. I’m not sure how to fix this problem.

After downloading and installing this new viewer ALL of my sound is distorted and choppy, constantly buzzing (very annoying), and looking around sometimes I get a psychedelic rainbow effect on objects. I still think it needs some more work as i can barely function with this viewer without ripping hair out lol my video and sound drivers -are- updated (just updated last week). I was also told they would still have the older release available for quite a while, yet i don’t see the older download on the downloads page anymore? Can anyone shed some insight if you’re having the same problems, or have ideas to combat the errors I’m getting?
March 27th, 2007 at 11:54 AM
everyone is grey, dance huds dont work, dance poles not working, missing textures everywhere, crashing grrr
March 27th, 2007 at 11:54 AM
Well I can’t log on since installing the new build, I get a message saying:
‘Display settings have been set to recomended levels based upon your system configeration’ then it just closes and want load???? Whats occuring?
March 27th, 2007 at 11:54 AM
Ok, so here’s what I’m getting in terms of the wording:
When I load up SL I get ‘Detecting Hardware…’ followed by ‘Clearing Cache…’ and then ‘Initializing Texture Cache.’
At this point the program tries to load where you would normally see the startup screen and instead I get a message that says: ‘Display settings have been set to recommended levels based on your systems configuration.’ with a distorted ‘Close’ button at which point it promptly crashes. (About 20 times in a row now.)
Help please.
March 27th, 2007 at 11:54 AM
My comp freezes every 4-5 min. Anyway, is a good job :).
March 27th, 2007 at 11:55 AM

March 27th, 2007 at 11:55 AM

Installed the new viewer on one system and having the same issue as Elanthius Flagstaff - logs in, but freezes after about 5 minutes - in my case, both lock-ups did not resolve themselves, and I had to reboot both times. Checking to ensure it is not my system, but I have had no problems at all previously.

Gaaah! And I’m supposed to be teaching a class right now. What will my poor ponygirls do?
March 27th, 2007 at 12:06 PM
I have to wonder if all the problems being reported are really due to the new viewer. Since I’m on a Mac G$, I’ve passed on it until it’s required,.. but after a crash I have been completely unable to log on. I get as far as the dialog box asking if i would like to download the new viewer. When I decline it.. nothing. It just sits there. Forcing a quit jumps out immediately, which usually indicates that program never loaded.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:07 PM

one more thing..the laod time to start program is like forever…i guess its better than crashing everytime peeps get on. Myabe you need an update for the update?
March 27th, 2007 at 12:10 PM
OK… and I left the login going this time while i typed my last note.. it FINALLY logged in. Perhaps everyone is trying at once?
March 27th, 2007 at 12:10 PM
Now cannot login anymore….
March 27th, 2007 at 12:11 PM
This may not be the time to ask this….
BUT
Where does 1.14.0 stand with the (ripoff)merchants who have been telling FL users that any money lost by using their vendors while using FL will NOT be refunded when the goods aren’t delivered?
Just out of interest…
So we all know…
March 27th, 2007 at 12:12 PM
Agreed with #11…..immediate crash with some kind of message of “setting recommended defaults” but too quick to read before the damn thing crashed
What the F@#K!
This is utterly ridiculous. I took a half day off of work to try and get some things done for freelance clients since SL was TOTAL poo this weekend and now this?????
Next time, please try the QA process WITHOUT your heads in places where the sun don’t shine.
Geeeeee wonder if anyone will answer my call at the support line…….taking bets anyone?
March 27th, 2007 at 12:12 PM
Logged in fine, less crashing on my G/Fs PC, world looks a little nicer on my PC, but at least 50-75% of the banlines and “buy pass” lines are invisible.
The ones immediately next to my land are viewable, but not much else. Same for my G/F and a friend who has also been testing.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:12 PM
Hi all… What is happening??? I could not TP, avatars stayed grey.. and now i am unable to log back in. Looks like it’s down???
March 27th, 2007 at 12:12 PM
All these problems. i had some similar things happening earlier. But I’m not using this viewer.
perhaps there were/are some grid issues today that the lindens haven’t admitted yet. All these problems don’t sound like clientside things, eg, failing to login, teleport failure, being ruthed, no money or search etc.
These are generally isues with either the servers, or your connection.
just my $0.02

Normally, I’m not one to complain about SL. I’ve apparently had an exception experience - no grand trouble to speak of, and two very friendly chats with Lindens in-world when I had very specific problems. I’ve been using First Look since it was available, and have enjoyed the somewhat bumpy ride as this new technology develops.
However.
Today, Lindens, I log on with the new client only to discover that the WarpPos trick is once again failing. I send in a Help Request, because checking the blog, no-one else seems to have this issue. This is the response I get:
[13:05] Buckaroo Mu: Is the WarpPos problem from the last update re-instated? Suddenly my in-sim telporters don’t work anymore.
[13:06] Second Life: Ariel Otafuku has left this session.
[13:06] Ariel Otafuku: From the blog regarding the updated viewer: If you are experiencing issues specific to this viewer version, please report them here on the blog; include your location in-world (for specific rendering issues) and system details from Help > About. blog.secondlife.com
Alright, Ariel, I understand maybe you’re busy. But one thing you need to be aware of: PHYSICS IS SIMULATED ON THE SERVER - SCRIPTS ARE RUN ON THE SERVER. WARPPOS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CLIENT.
Ahem.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, can I hear from others as to whether or not the warpPos bug is showing up for you again?

Loaded fine, after I resolved my firewall block to the new viewer, I was able to log on, I found all the textures in the sim I was in, loaded much faster, except all the textures I had applied on full bright prims, like the ones on my vending machines are almost all washed out, if I turn the brightness off the display is still a bit bright, but acceptible for viewing. I was unable to adjust the gama in preferences, as the gamma was either too dark or too bright, no in-between, also I have no contrast adjustment on this Toshiba Laptop.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:13 PM
GUESS WHAT??? Unable to go back and use previous version.. I installed the previous version and tried to login.. i get the window that says ‘A new version of Second Life is Available. You must download this update to use the system’… WTF I used that version this morning now i can’t.. i am stuck with this 1.14.0 that doesn’t work…. LL Pick up your phones.. reply to the emails.. do something!!!!!!!!

While I’m on the subject, folks, for those of you who DID NOT try the First Look viewer - if you hare using SYMANTEC OR NORTON ANTIVIRUS, make sure your CACHE directory is excluded from Real-Time Scanning! Othewise, you will be stuck in grey-land forever. I’m pretty confident this is a bug in SAV/NAV rather than SL - and it’s easily worked around.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:16 PM
Howdy, Having the same issue as several others above, Apon opening the Sl app, it imediately crashes with the message of altering the display properties or somethign on the lines of that then refuses to log a crash report aswell
Ho hum.
Get r done Lindens.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:18 PM
¡¡¡¡¡Que esta pasando??????
March 27th, 2007 at 12:18 PM
I’m glad to see the bug where I could stay logged on for more than 3 minutes got fixed.
Serious, not just me, many people are crashing often with new release.

I work in tech supp (not for SL thankfully) and have seen similar issues with McAfee in the last couple of weeks. Think is some sort of issue with these AV’s and the recent Windows Updates.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:19 PM
@ 41: Linden Labs phone support system is a total JOKE. I’ve been trying to get through to them for several days. Apparently the “average wait time” is ALWAYS 5 to 6 minutes, but having spent a MASSIVE 90 minutes on hold and got told each time to “leave a voice ticket” this is the WORST customer support I’ve ever experienced.
Now they’re closing Lindex transfers (which was my query) and aren’t even allowing comments to that blog entry…
March 27th, 2007 at 12:19 PM
I downloaded the update, but then each time I try to launch secondlife, it crashes while trying to change my display settings. How or why is this happening and how can I fix, it?
March 27th, 2007 at 12:19 PM
Saving and editing notecards is broken again.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:19 PM
Seems I’m not alone in having probs with the new version, specifically: no hair, unable to access any inventory items whatsoever, crashed several times for no apparent reason, avatars grey. So far soooo bad… now wishing i’d never downloaded this thing in the first place.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:20 PM
I’m having the same problem as a few of our posters as well, tries adjusting my setting, crashes before logging in, rinse and repeat..lol. Me thinks I smell some sort of fix coming, or more like they will revert back to the last viewer temporarily. lol, Captain Obvious, eh?
March 27th, 2007 at 12:20 PM
this update crashes left and right on me, while the previous release worked fine. i’m going to try to install the first look viewer instead to gain some stability.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:20 PM
Have 1.14.0 and folders in inventory will not open. I’m also STILL stuck with 51 Lost and Found folders, which I’ve reported so many times before . . . no response. Now, worse, folders won’t open at all.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:20 PM
I cant even get to the log on. I immediately get a notice saying: Display settings have been set to recommended levels based on your system configurations. Then it crashes. I did a system restore and still go the same message. Guess I will have to go back to TSO :/
March 27th, 2007 at 12:21 PM
After updating to this new version today I can’t log in now i keep crashing on loging before it ever fully logs me in.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:21 PM
The graphics are acting up almost violently. Whatever these changes to the rendering were, totally killed my computer. Unless psychedelic colors and random shapes all over the screen are a feature…
Things worked at first (but the graphics were/are totally screwy), when I first teleported I got Visual C++ error… “abnormal program termination”, which of course resulted to a crash.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:22 PM
I am getting insane tye dye psychadelic flashing at times only on hud attachments and other times across all objects in my workspace… ALso a bit curious to see that it says that my CPU is “not supported” when my system is far more up to date then required to run sl. Not sure if this is a specific location related issue but I am in Castlerigg on my property.

YOOOOUUUUUU SUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 27th, 2007 at 12:23 PM
first look is no better, i can’t stay connected more than a few minutes without totally crashing.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:23 PM
@43: A lot of changes NAV and others have been making are aimed at Vista compatibility, but unfortunately they HAVE broken things for XP users. This may well be another side effect of that.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:23 PM
Look, Lindens.
Please remove the current client from the download section and replace it with the earlier edition.
I have been using that version since it was released with only the usual diffs.

I’ll wait until I am required to download the new viewer after hearing these horror stories…
March 27th, 2007 at 12:24 PM
I just upgraded my windows machine. It’s running windows 2ksp4 with a 256mb video card and 1gig of ram. This updated viewer is working better than any one before it. The only problems I’m having is things apparently jumping around while i”m trying to build. Outside of that i’ve had no problems.
Sorry to hear about everyone else’s though.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:25 PM
OMG.. What the ¤%”# LL done NOW? Read the blog and downloaded 1.14.0. Uninstalled both earlier versions (SL and SLfirstlook, even clean my register), and installed. Now, IMPOSSIBLE to log in!!! NOTHING happens… no “timeouts” or anything, just freeze at login-screen. I have checked and resetting firewall and everything… Im SOOO sick of SL bugs and crap now… Ok, at some peeks, problems are excused. But now its EVERY damn day.. FIX IT FAST or CLOSE SL for good… I going to BETTER and WORKING MMORPG now… YUK!
March 27th, 2007 at 12:25 PM
Please folks, if you are crashing with this update *INCLUDE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND VIDEO CARD*. Otherwise we have no way of identifying which systems are having pr
