Login Issues [Resolved]

UPDATE [6:30pm PDT]: As of 5:00pm, logins were restored for all users.  Previous to this time we had been allowing some logins to proceed to allow the system to recover.

UPDATE [3:10pm PDT]: We store per-user information (such as inventory lists) on a cluster of machines, with each resident assigned to a particular server in the cluster. One of these servers is having problems at the moment, and it is unable to keep up with the requests coming in. We are currently investigating the issue.

Residents who have their per-user information stored on the affected system will be unable to log in at the moment, and will see the following message:

We were temporarily unable to complete your login because we are currently experiencing issues with your inventory host. Please try again in a few minutes.

Other residents should be unaffected, both during log-in and in-world, although logins may be slower than normal as affected residents keep retrying.

UPDATE [3:15pm PDT]: If you were one of those affected residents, you may have been logged in after updating to the new viewer and have seen an empty inventory. Don’t worry - your stuff isn’t gone! The viewer just needed to ask the servers to send a copy of the list, and the servers were too busy to answer (which was the issue). Once you’re able to log in again, your inventory will be there intact.

One of the back-end services that the login servers communicate with is having problems, which is leading to slowed down or failed logins.

We’re currently working to resolve this. I’ll update this post as we learn more.

UPDATE [2:30pm PDT]: The same back-end system suffering from issues is responsible for inventory and other per-user information for many (but not all) residents, who may be experiencing in-world issues after logging in.

UPDATE [2:40pm PDT]: We’ve *just* made changes that should limit the impact on logins to residents with per-user information on the affected system, so other residents can log in.

UPDATE [2:50pm PDT]: To add to the fun… If you have have updated to the new 1.14.0 viewer your “local cache” will be “flushed.” In non-geek-speak, this is where copies of your inventory and textures (etc) are stored on your hard drive so they don’t have to be downloaded constantly. Logging in with your cache “flushed” means that your avatar and other things will appear incorrectly until the information downloads again. This download period is normally pretty quick but is a jarring experience if this hasn’t happened to you recently. If you are one of the residents with information stored on the affected server, you may need to wait until the server issues are resolved for things to appear correctly.

    Hmm.. after I downloaded the new client (1.14.0) I am unable to log in any more. I haven’t had problems before, but now I only get to the point where the viewer says “Senond life might appear frozen.” (Very true) and “Please Wait” (Which does not help any).

    These failures always seem to occur at peak periods, which begs the question regarding system robustness. The time must be approaching where Lindens must consider a policy of giving log-on preference to payment information on file customers over those who are on for free. There must be a loyalty reward somewhere. This must happen at peak periods and camping must also be stopped at peak periods. Look after those paying money into your account first Lindens!

    Inventory is VERY slow loading. For some bizarre reason, not sure what, my avi shape is steroidal. Thighs like a weight lifter. Not attractive on a slender female avi.

    However, i AM in world and apparently i look normal to others. Login took inordinately long but eventually happened.

    I have lost my ENTIRE inventory!!! I have spent a massive amount of money, and pay for 2 premium accounts. every day now there is one problem or another, and every F! time you LL ppl do maintenance or client upgrade shite hits the F! fan… So if either I get my thousands of dollars worth of inventory items back or you will not see another penny from me.

    Just thought I’d tag something… is others having difficulties moving between regions because when I try it slow loads and then disconnects me completley, so I have to login again and do a new location just to get too where I wanted to be in the first place.     i have tried from one appartment to another and
    get all objects from the old one into my Inventory,
    at the new location all objects are gone
    (no longer at the old appartment, and not in inventory)

    Very funny … i dont know how much L$ of objects are gone

    Slowly, my inventory is loading..and I mean slow. Several minutes already and it’s not even 1/3 done. I also keep getting a message about being unable to put my hair on because of a ‘pending attachment’…great. Except, there aren’t any pending attachments, and I look positively hideous without hair.     This really sucks. Just 3 minutes before the message pops up warning about the inventory/login issue, I was proposing to my gf with a ring.
    I transfered it to her and it’s gone.. And she never received it! She tried to relog and not cannot even get on. This really ruined my moment and a missing ring I just got custom made lastnight :(

    I was just at a point to change my clothings. I was naked when it went down and now it’s back up again but my clothes takes ages to load. It’s still not loaded and in the meantime, my avatar is freezing her ass off.
    My inventory is a complete mess right now. I have a few dozens lost and found folders now.

    SL just keeps getting “better” every day. I have watched the game quality steadily decline for months now…when is it really going to get fixed? I have been reporting the bugs when they occur…as have others and we have been suffering slower and slower game play. I know it is complex and there is great stuff in the works…but the basics are still not working right. Why add fluff like voice when you can’t get logins and inventory stablized?

    The people you purchased the items from should have a record of you buying from them. If the objects don’t come back, send the creator an IM explaining what happened - not their fault and not your fault. They may send you replacement copies of what you lost. I have to say that so far, whenever I have had to do this, the creators have been most kind and have given me replacement items.

    After I updated, log in was pretty much normal. Loading was fine, and I have my own avatar. Clothes and everything loaded and rezzed like normal, only thing that’s wonky is I have zero inventory, no folders, nothing…but I have my skin and clothes that I was wearing when I last logged. *shrug* I guess I’ll have to walk to that party.

Nice to see it takes something drastic to get the search sped up. ;/ I have like 50 extra defualt clothing, lost and found, etc folders that I can’t delete, and missing several hundreds of things.

    The idea of a class action lawsuit is not as far-fetched as some might imagine. Although I don’t have the details in front of me, there has been a lawsuit, I believe somewhere in Asia, from users of a game who feel that what the game promised was misrepresented.     Having handled almost $200 worth of transactions in-world on behalf of a client today, and showing up to do a presentation in a male avatar but Ruthed, with breasts, after I had explained to him what had happened and he had stopped laughing… we both just gave up and logged out.
