[UPDATED] 1.14.0 Viewer Update Monday. Preview available for download.

Friday, March 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 AM by: Steve Linden

See 1.14.0 Viewer Update postponed until Tuesday Morning. Preview available for an update on this.

I am happy to announce that at long last we will be releasing the Second Life 1.14.0 Viewer on Monday.

For a preview of this update, you can download First Look 1.13.4.59668. which is identical to 1.14.0 minus the version number and complete release notes which will be available in the official release.

Update: We just pushed an update, 1.13.4.59668 that fixes a crash bug and a texture animation bug (see below for details).

For those of you who have been trying the First Look viewers, thank you for all of your feedback.

The editing of embedded notecards and the empty postcard messages have already been fixed on the server side, and the old particle systems are being converted to the new particle system on the servers also. Thanks to those who helped with this process.

We will continue to fix any remaining bugs as quickly as we are able to identify and reproduce them. We know that there are some new bugs with this release, but at this point there are more fixes to old bugs than there are new bugs. If you want to help with the process of fixing bugs, please provide us with specific repros and your system specs. This information is very helpful with the bug fixing process, and thanks again to those who have been providing constructive feedback. Nonconstructive feedback just wastes everyone’s time and as always will be ignored.

Bug reports from First Look are also tracked and processed, so feel free to use that communication channel as well.

Thanks,

-Steve

  1. 1 Toni jacobus Says:

No Note about the Notecard Bug?

  2. 2 Smiley Barry Says:

Yay! Finally! And, will it have First Look Technology? (Yeah, now it’s a technology type in my head. Well what do you expect? It doubled the speed on my old computer!)

    (Yay again!)

  3. 3 Smiley Barry Says:

ERR! Beat me to the first comment Toni! lol Nah just kidding. it’s ok lol.

  4. 4 Toni jacobus Says:

Okay, i have to open my eyes *lol*
The problem is fixed on server

  5. 5 Alex Says:

The renderer and netcode seem to be improved quite a bit. I am seeing as much as a 50% frame rate increases in lag prone areas (this is pretty much any area with avatars or while the world is loading). Hopefully voice will come in the next version.

  6. 6 Yoleska Yallock Says:

Although I welcome this update for one of my computers, the FL client constantly crashes hard my other computer. Sigh…. It would be great if we could still use the prev sl client.

  7. 7 Kenny Devoix Says:

    CPU: AMD (2010 Mhz)
    Memory: 1024 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
    Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
    Graphics Card: GeForce 6800 XT/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
    OpenGL Version: 2.0.3
    LLMozLib Version: 1.1.0 (Mozilla GRE:1.8.0.10_0000000000)

This viewer is running very well for me so far. Textures loading at a reasonable rate and good FPS. Its been refreshing to see the leval of cooperation between many users and Lindens on this viewer and I believe we will have a better product because of it. As Steve said constructive feedback, specific system specs and specific bug reports help a lot more then “Its Broke Fix It!!!!!” with no details does.

  8. 8 Phli Foxchase Says:

Will you turn the grid offline on Monday for the release ?

Thank you for your job !

  9. 9 Jopsy Pendragon Says:

Thanks for all the hard work Steve! (And whomever else is working on the First Look client with you! =)

The only pending “particle” issue I can think of is, at times, there seems to be a radical drop in the number of rendered particles. (If I were to guess, it’s as if it’s not clearing previously seen emitters, or culling out distant emitters from the calculation that determines how many new particles to draw.) I’m not able to reproduce this on demand however. If I find a way I’ll report it in jira and bug report. :)

  10. 10 mirfak ock Says:

HEY!!! thet 1st look release is crashing more often than not!!!!! (at least on my mac!!!)
It i better on load, texutre handleing and stuff, but is really unstable =((((
Is it this just my issue?????

  11. 11 Jack Hathor Says:

Does this mean the notecard bug is tracked and solved ?

  12. 12 Kenny Devoix Says:

    @11
Jack I edited about 15/20 notecards this morning with no saving problems at all. I think that bug has been squished for me at the moment anyways.

  13. 13 MikeC Althouse Says:

I hope the HUD problems have been addressed. The firstview that I have been using loses the ability to click the HUD after a while. I have to call up the builder interface and click with the build arrow on my HUD to get the client to respond once again to the HUD.

    Mac Pro OS X

    Mike

  14. 14 RC Paderborn Says:

I’m am tickled that the note card issue has been fixed on the server side! First Look runs a bit faster for me, but more importantly, things like the water rezzing bug (having to use Tools->Estate) are fixed in it.

But having to log off and come back on with the “real” client just to change a configuration note card got told real fast.

  15. 15 Darek Deluca Says:

PLEASE listen to Jopsy Pendragon, he is a particle expert! I have seen a radical decrease in rendered particles! The bug is hard to reproduce. I sell particle emitters and this will kill my business. I have reported this bug in previous first look viewers!!

  16. 16 Inigo Chamerberlin Says:

Ok, it’s been looking quite smooth lately - well done all!

It IS faster, going back to the ‘old’ client is hell.
I just came from Grigano - yuk - and I could move there! :-)
Textures took forever to load - as always there.
Crashed on TP out mind you, but in that lag pit nothing surprises me.
AND, the crash logger didn’t crash! :-)

The point about the notecards being a serverside issue confirms my earlier comments though. It’s NOT easy testing when the servers/network are inhabited by hordes of bugs, and I can’t help thinking that the ‘noise’ generated by the server related issues being reported as client bugs is a problem all round.

Not to mention people reporting the unexpected effects of seldom used settings as ‘bugs’…

me: shuffles feet and slinks off guiltily

  17. 17 Amethyst Rosencrans Says:

Will we still be able to use the 1.13.3(2) viewer? The first look still has a huge memory leak and crashes a lot! What about the llParticleSystem([]) and other bugs?

  18. 18 Gwyneth Llewelyn Says:

Great to see that the whole of SL — and not just a few dozens of thousands! — are finally going to enjoy the complete range of features and improvements of the First Look viewer that has been in development for so long :)

I only wonder about something, is there going to be a rolling upgrade, or a whole grid shutdown next Monday? I noticed that you didn’t post any “maintenance window” for this upgrade… if so… YAY for assynchronous updates!

  19. 19 Astryd Moore Says:

    Steve,

The crash bug I found in Bolinas — the one where you face west and it crashes — is still there. Are you going to go ahead and release anyway? You know it’s 100% replicable for several people?

Is there anything else I can do to provide information that will help you track down this crash bug?

  20. 20 Astryd Moore Says:

I’m also noticing the particle sparseness issue that Jopsy mentions. I keep forgetting to mention it. And I don’t know how to reproduce it, sorry :-)

  21. 21 Astryd Moore Says:

To put it in context (hi, me again) I think the First Look viewer is great, and the framerate improvements are going to revolutionise most people’s experience of Second Life. It’s a great thing.

I’m just concerned about the idea of it being released with known, replicable crash bugs in it.

  22. 22 Cathal McConachie Says:

This is very bad news for those of us who use THiNC Book and the THiNC Press. FirstLook 59558 reports ‘unexpected difficulties with the server’ in trying to upload an (unnecessary) texture. Books fail to create and the publisher fails to publish. The Main viewer ( 1.13.3.2) however works perfectly. (Bug reported to Toneless Tomba of THiNC.) When 59558 becomes 1.14 and if 1.13.3.2 isnt supported all THiNC publishing is likely to fail.

It is also very bad news for those of us who want to apply textures with no transfer properties. FirstLook 59558 fails to find ‘no transfer’ textures when attempting to select and apply them. Main viewer ( 1.13.3.2) offered a workaround (uncheck apply immediately) which did work. (Bug reported to Lindens via the reporting system).

Steve Linden may be “happy to announce that at long last we will be releasing 1.14.0 on Monday.” I fear its release will be premature.

  23. 23 Fatbear Flamand Says:

Something strange happened since yesterday. I had the sounds on an ideal level, whithout changing Windows volume (and having SL sound on maximum). Today SL sound is very very low… I have to raise a lot Windows sounds and this is disturbing when Windows emit any sound.

  24. 24 Fatbear Flamand Says:

Also, I still have serious problems taking items from my inventory and saving scripts… no matter where (even if it appears to be more serious at Sabre).

  25. 25 anonymous Says:

I hope this is JUST my problem; Rotation scripts (Target Omega) are no longer working for me now with this new viewer..

  26. 26 Nadia Says:

Hello all and specialy LINDEN LABS !!!!
Think this is not the right place in the blog, but it is the most actual one so i post it here maby get finaly arespons on it.

Since i am playing Sl its all problems.
Every update there are more. in the beginning i ha dsomething like .. ok every game has his things.
But now im on for about 3 months, having bussiness in SL, and pay alot a Real money to get it all done the way we want.
Talking about weekly money that goes into SL, kind a investment ;)

When i ask to help request about some things, like about 10 minutes ago, and get answer like .. post bug report. or post abuse report. and when you did that about 150 times without any respons on 1 of them, i think its time to go post in the blog.

    So, here they come:
    1. peopl ecat tp to our location on Third Space. Our mall is there, and guess what, we can finaly take a break as mall owner, becouse NOBODY CAN COME !!!!!!!! tp to it dont work !

    2. Invetory problems, take something to invetory mutch times mean take it to ????? i dont know, anywhere but NOT my invetory. it just is gone and never comes in my invetory.

    3. it seems that ALL of my firnds have put the option out that i can see if they are online, becouse of the 100 friends NO ONE is online.
Ok did a little check myself, and gues what, thay are online, just not in my list. they also send me screenshots as proof they have the option on so i can see ther eonline.
Relogged about 7 times, but no help.
only people that come online when i allready am online come vissable online in the list.

Welall this questions, i did ask many times in Help.
The responses on it are many different, 1 say do this, othe rsay do that, and all not help.

I say Linden Check it out ! solve the problems instead to create new ones with updates.
What i realy like to see is a downgrade instead of a new update with new problems.

And is there realy someone working at bug and abuse report ?? or is that just a emty adress ?? becouse in 3 months, i not get 1 response .

So, hope lindens will respons .
Ok. this also has to be sayed, there are also very good helpers.
George Linden did help me fantastic on some things. respect to that.

  27. 27 trite Says:

#10 You are not the only one. Using FL last night it crashed immediately after logging on about half the time, and after almost every tp. I’m on a mac as well. Not encouraging.

    Mac OS 10.3.9
    1.25 Ghz PowerPC G4
    512 MB DDR SRAM

  28. 28 anonymous Says:

Fix one thing; break three others… Fairly consistant track record LL ;)

  29. 29 anonymous Says:

BTW, If it’s NOT just me having Target Omega problems, you are going to have A LOT of pissed of residents if you release this as the main viewer ;)

  30. 30 Top Tank Says:

So what, I’m the only one who still can’t save notecards in objects?

  31. 31 Nadia Says:

Even more pissed residents ?? and there allready are so many pissed. i also hear a lot there are many that would be very happy with a othe rgame as sl when it will show up, some tells me they quit right a way when its there.

I have some friends that are club owners, there no w5 club owners just quit sl becouse its no fun for them anymore

  32. 32 Tormento Sansome Says:

Client crashes every now and then, particles are not appearing as they should in terms of amounts. though frame rates are good. Buddy list not showing ppl online. Problems with fails to find textures with no transfer. Huge memory leaks on this one. Rotation scripts Target Omega doesn’t work either.
    XP pro 32bit SP2, AMD64 X2 3,200Mhz, 4 Gig ddr2, 2 PCIe Nvidia 7800 SLi,

  33. 33 Dekka Raymaker Says:

Generally the latest FL has be pretty amazing for me. Last night I did crash badly while TP’ing, I think I was in Laggy Wagaland, which was a place you’ve have recently updated (?) however, so far today I’ve not been allowed to TP there, timeouts. About another ago, I got the message your not allowed on the grid until blah blah pacific time and then logged out. But otherwise everything is hunky dory. I even managed to upload my first ever t-shirt textures x 4, made my first note and sorted out my inventory, the only things ever leaving it are those I have deleted.

    Thanks for a great program.

  34. 34 Cappy Frantisek Says:

    @25

No, I’m having similar issues, two items with the same target omega settings but one is rotating way slower than the other. Also crashing alot on teleport and phantome notices, like “Can’t load gesture” when I wasn’t trying to load one.

    @21

Yeah it doesn’t seem like a good policy to release a viewer when the answer is “We know that there are some new bugs with this release, but at this point there are more fixes to old bugs than there are new bugs.” Weill be interseting to see if the fixes to the old bugs hold or not.

  35. 35 DR Dahlgren Says:

Just tried the Bolinas bug mentioned above and it appears to actually be the server controlling Bodega and not Bolinas. I find that I can not move into the 10 m boundry area on either side of any border of the Bodega sim borders at an altitude of 35 to 70 meters. Any attempt to move to that verticle band at the boundry to the Bodega sim results in a client crash.

  36. 36 Tormento Sansome Says:

Also want to add that, no matter what SIM you go or in, the gestures sounds are laggin behind or don’t even load or can be heard. TPing to sometimes crashed yhe client as well…..

  37. 37 DR Dahlgren Says:

Oh, this effect at Bodega does not occur with standard client, only first look.

Also, water does not appear to be fixed. I TP’d to Hagen and there was no water until World > Region/Estate tweek.

    DRD

  38. 38 Nadia Says:

nice to read all this, but…………….
as we see, on THIS problems no Lindens is responding.
i think they must not respond thi sselected, but just face it and give answers here. Lindens be honest to your payed residents, or i think the end of SL is near.
i thinkwhen the paying people gets agry and trow away SL from there pc, sl has a problem dont thing thats the issue behind it , is it ??

So Lindens….. read the complains above and RESPONS !!!!

  39. 39 Amethyst Rosencrans Says:

Regarding particle sparseness. I have noticed if the object generating the particles is out of view the particle density drops drastically. Particularly noticeable on my leashes. If the collar generating the leash is visible on the screen it looks fine. But if it isn’t it is very sparse and often doesn’t even look like a leash.

  40. 40 Astryd Moore Says:

@38 — Nadia, you’re wasting your time. You will only get a response on this post if you post useful comments about the First Look viewer. Sorry :-)

@35 — yay! it really isn’t just me!

@34 — and what’s more the Bolinas bug isn’t even a new one; I first reported it weeks ago… I wish I could think of something useful I could do to help figure out what’s causing it. Steve, if you think of anything please let me know.

  42. 42 Jayden B Says:

I’m sure LL have calculated the risk of releasing this on the population. I just went back to the production client to check a few differences and visually it is quite bad.

    Visuals above stability.

Given the short timeframe until this is released, and the weekend so no coding… The most serious issue from me.

Crashing on the Mac a lot, at least once an hour. Often eed a hard reset in order to free the machine as the mouse pointer is also killed.

Above all this needs to be addressed. Mac stability is very poor. I have sent in hundreds of crash reports on this, as I am sure everyone has.

There is no repro short of be in world for a few hours.

  43. 43 element Says:

i think this is the best viewer ever, its working perfectly for me. if they can get the server side of SL up to snuff it would be great.

  44. 44 TamLin Ball Says:

  45. 45 Cappy Frantisek Says:

Also had client do the “everything inthe universe dissapears” on me just now. SOmthing that happened occasionally before as well. I can deal wioth the occasional crash but the memory leak is BAD. in crowds of 10 or mor people I can have to restart every 5-10 minutes.

Before I upgraded to 1-14 I logged in and had no problems at all. After I upgraded - Grey world everywhere and it takes ages to rez in when landing in a new region or logging in. Also very slow to rez item to avatar.

If this is not related to the “Regions Down Blog” problem, please don’t go ahead Monday and release 1-14 until it is sorted.

I know LL don’t usually listen to blog moans but….Pretty pretty please with choclate on it —don’t release until it is usuable ;)

Never a good start when the first time you open a client it asks you straight away if you want to send a crash report :/ I’d only just installed it lol. Oh joy….

  56. 56 Gillian Waldman Says:

It’s worth mention perhaps that since the update to FL on Monday, I literally haven’t seen my Zhao-based AO HUD. I have mentioned to Dan Linden but it’s not fixed in my case. This is an Abraminations HUD (based on Zhao).

I am happy with stability in general with FL though logout crashes seem to be fairly common.

“Attachments sometimes move to the centre of the body after region cross/teleport”

They do huh, and up the ass is centre of body?, They also can hover over your head, appear off to one side and in a multitude of other places. HUDs move off screen too.

But we’ve heard it from the Linden’s mouth, widespread isues like tp’s failing, network data serving problems, invisibility, stuff up the ass, friends showing online when they’re not, Mac client crashing on quitting, inventory folders staying open after about half an hour, links in edited notecards getting juggled on reopening….

Complain all you want, they’ll just ignore you. Obviously do cos most of those bugs have been around for months….

@59: thanks Torley — to my shame I hadn’t checked the issue tracker. I’m really glad that detailed information about this bug exists and is being worked on. However I did talk extensively to Steve Linden about this issue almost exactly a month ago, so I really hope it isn’t the first the dev team have heard of it!

  65. 65 Dytska Vieria Says:

I have used FL extensively for a while. Sometimes there were problems in previous FL versions but overall it is much better than the standard viewer. It is very good for building now, compared to standard version.

I think this annoucement is to provoke more reports of problems from people who have never used FL before! I sorry for those with problems, hope they are fixed soon.

I stay logged in for hours and never have problems. The last time I crashed was due to the Bolinas bug.

Torley, as a stop gap measure on the SL-29362 issue, could we get a ‘reattach all’ menu item in the client>character debug menu? Having a one step REPAIR will reduce the aggravation significantly even if the underlying problem still exists.

About reporting bugs… I am getting confused. Are we supposed to file a bug report AND post them again to jira?

  67. 67 Winter Ventura Says:

if you unleash this First Look monstrosirty upon the grid with the full force of an “Official release”.. without fixing the HUD clicking problem.. you’re going to see retailers collapsing under the support load.

I receive, on average, 10 complaints a week, from noobs using FirstLook. who can’t use my HUDs. I can only imagine that I’m not the only one. Several other retailers I have encountered, have had so many First Look related technical support issues, that they have begun erecting signs, warning people to stop using it.

By all accounts, Firstlook is *NOT* ready for primetime.. and judging again by the comment log on this Blog entry.. I don’t see much to change that perception.

You thought breaking WarpPos caused an outcry.. wait ’til tens of thousands of users can’t control their xCite huds or whatever.

  68. 68 Maximillian Desoto Says:

What is the status of the “rainbow texture” bug? I have not seen this mentioned in the blog posting, and this is a SHOWSTOPPER!! If everyone has the same problem that I have, with textures regularly streaked through with a rainbow effect, the reaction on release of this viewer will be heard, nee felt all the way to San Francisco!!

    What’s the word?

Jayden B: Unless it’s a kernel panic, I’ve always been able to command-tab out of a crashed SL session. (Usually when SL crashes in Mouselook mode)

It’s been crashing when I’ve been logged in for an hour or two, and rotate the camera view. (spinning pizza-wheel freeze-up) Speculation was that the SL client was overwhelming the videocard with OGL calls. I haven’t had a kernel panic in a long time.

The Lindens had the crashing fixed with FL about two months ago. The stability was awesome. Then the rendering suddenly became prettier, and the crashing returned. (OSX 10.4.8)

  71. 71 Kinzo Nurmi Says:

    @ Torely

A little bit of confusion here: we exactly should we report issues? We have the bug report tool in life, you just mentioned the Wiki, and often times blog authorer ask for issues to be reported as blog responses…….reporting in three places is not praticle. So, exactly where is the best place to report issues - let’s pick one a stick with it.

  72. 72 Steve Linden Says:

We just pushed an update, 1.13.4.59668 that fixes the crash in Barcola and a couple of final texture animation bugs.

  74. 74 Io Zeno Says:

The current viewer has a very bad reappearance of the alpha bug, when two alphas are next to each other they flip. I know this is an inherent problem with SL but this is much worse than it was before. PLEASE look into this, since I make clocks this effects me in a big way. :(

  75. 75 Astryd Moore Says:

Steve, the Bolinas crash bug appears to have gone away! hurrah!

My enthusiasm for the First Look viewer is now unbounded! :-)

  76. 76 Luna McLaglen Says:

OO My!! I see there are many bugs in the FL. I had tons of problems with the last update, it took me several weeks to get everything stable again. I hope this update will not leave many of us stranded and unable to login or conduct business. I try to chat with everyone I see and ask if they are having issues with SL. Everyone has many issues with SL. First and foremost is the unstable environment. Lost inventory.. and yes it is truely lost. I know from personal experience that i will set a script, it is working great, then come back a day later and bam. The script is not working or is gone. I have objects showing up on my land that i own and placed that will show up as owned by someone else in the About Land Tab. Many issues and not damn thing being done about it.

When people are spending real money in SL they expect a good stable environment. Unlike other ‘games’ that are out there. They have bugs they go down, they have updates, but they are not using Real Money in the ‘Game’.

  77. 77 Usagi Musashi Says:

OMG your release FIRST LOOK AS THIS CLIENT! are you nuts! Its not really for final release! If you thought 1.6 a 1.7 clients were nightmare too eaarly for releases First Look will be alot worse! WHY WHY WHY! 6+ weeks of testing this client and in high populatin sism grey missing textures, and all sort of animation issues are STILL occuring as likte the fist release of First Look…….

  78. 78 Usagi Musashi Says:

Grant you i love this release but i don`t mind testing it. But is it really ready for final release?

  79. 79 JT Dagger Says:

Thanks Steve, thanks Torley, thank you other FLV users.

As this thing gets closer to release I get more and more pleased with the overall usability, especially the stability and rendering performance. Maybe the regular viewer was acceptable for other people, but I found it to be a total dog.

Unfortunately with beta programs, bugs aren’t communicated to the dev team prior to release, so critical bugs end up making it into the release version. This effectively turns the wider userbase into a sort of super-beta testing community.

I’m fine with this. I’ve seen it time and time again with software. The beta phase of First Look has been sooo transparent. Frequent updates, and Steve and Torley and others have shown that they’ve been listening to the comments on the blogs diligently.

Some of the comments indicate that participating in a software test is a new experience… but hopefully further down the line these people come to understand what software development is all about and learn to test and submit bug reports, rather that get frustrated and post angrily, and upset.

And frankly, some of the comments here aren’t relevant to FLV testing at all. Some of these comments are valid, but are not giving the dev team anything to act upon. “I lost something in my inventory” is a valid gripe, but is this a bug with FLV? Have you filed it in Jira? If not, then please locate the proper forum and post there instead. Some simply amount to nattering by people who are taking advantage of this blog to vent general frustration with SL.

  80. 80 Usagi Musashi Says:

Thats Steve and Joshau Lindens that have been working on this client……..OK so you tell me then. Is High population islands that has continues “GREY AVIES” ” Crashing randomly” Scripts failure to work, Missing textures is as you say “aren’t relevant”?…….I don`t know if you have tested First look to any extent….But At times all these release of first look still looks like it like the first. SAme bugs same coded are broken etc……..Smooth script does not even work……Slurs for get it! doesnt work worth *******.

That’s just the trouble, Mr. Dagger…..they deleted those forums. People post here because their issues are ignored elsewhere. You accept a beta-product as release as the norm, and that’s fine. But you should also accept that what you call “venting” by customers is the logical outcome of such a customer unfriendly scheme. *shrugs*

  85. 85 Kinzo Nurmi Says:

    @ Usagi:

While there area still issues with the FLV, would you not agree that even with its current imprefections, would it not be a better alternative to the current standard viewer?

From what I understand, the new viewer pipeline is more efficient than the previous viewers. Thus, if all users where using the new viewer, load on the servers would be reduced.

I would tend to think that increasing efficiency for a higher number of users is the top priority right now.

Given that, even with remaining bugs would not we achieve the greatest benefit by releasing the current FLV as the standard client, then move on to the remaining issues?

  86. 86 Colin Ritt Says:

I’ve been having a problem in the FL viewer that if a resource fails to load properly the entire client crashes. It’ll pop up a “this item cannot be attached” message then lock-up. Maybe it’s a server-side issue, if there is one for the next update, otherwise it’s a nasty crash.

  87. 87 Jayden B Says:

@59 Torley - “Shoe Buggery - SL-29362″ - AKA “Attachments sometimes move to the centre of the body after region cross/teleport”

Jira doesn’t seem to show this that I can find, but the search isn’t great so I could have missed it - URL please if I have otherwise… You give an internal reference, but if it’s not in Jira than shouldn’t the Lindens have enetered it for feedback, voting and comment?

Just noticed that one of my huds no longer plays a sound. I don’t have any other sound generating huds to test with unfortunately, but going back to production makes the hud noise play. Can anyone confirm before I submit to Jira?

  88. 88 JT Dagger Says:

@84 I hear what you’re saying, but the structure of the forums has not stopped me from venting there. As long as people keep their griping civil and contructive, i find the forums to be a pretty open place.

    Regarding FLV:
I’ve been getting some crashes with this latest viewer, whereas 59558 was pretty rock solid. I’ve been submitting my crash reports, but I can’t detect a pattern. I was in Toxia for 2 hours and had no problems, but then I went to a club with a lot of particles, was ok for an hour, but then crashed 3 times within 10 minutes.

Possibly related to the particle problems that others report? I really don’t know. Hopefully the crash reports I submitted shed some light on the problem.

Finally, I’m concerned that the new viewer will not be as good for builders as the present one. What are the issues that builders are still dealing with in FLV that need to be fixed?

  89. 89 Jayden B Says:

Hard Crashed just IMing (Again, but only third time in the last 10 hours, so much better).

Cmd-Tab was not responsive, Cmd-Option-Esc was not responsive. On coldstarting the computer and firing up second life I was not asked to submit a crash report. Now I think of it, I am never really asked to submit a report on these lock-ups.

I said this before and I said in my post. The first look client IS the best viewer TO DATE! And is the future veiwer.I not bashing this viewer at all! I love it! .BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Its not ready…………Mind you we need this viewer to be atleast 70% workable. Its not even 50%…. Thats why i don`t want to see this viwer released yet. But after 6+ weeks we are still getting the same errors crashes and bad codering as if it was the begainning for the first look client……….

  91. 91 Huns Says:

Well, the texture picker’s busted. When you select a texture and bring up the picker, it’s got that list of your textures on the right side, and it’s supposed to scroll down to the one you’ve selected (if it’s one in your inv.) - This doesn’t work anymore. It is really useful when you have hundreds of textures and don’t remember what you called a certain one.

How To Make a Helpful-Productive-Useful POST

i would like to try to offer some helpful advice, to those who do not understand a very important part of helping the FL client software development team get the information they require and need. before you post here.

    1. while the client is open and running click on Help and select About Second Life

    2. use your mouse and copy all the pertinent information into your clipboard

    3. return here to this Blog and paste the information you copied into the comment section

    4. now add your comment’s

    5. submit your post

if you do this before posting, it really helps the software engineers solve the problems you are describing much faster and we the users end up with a better product to be able to enjoy in the long run.
if you do not do this then much of the above posted comments, no matter how well they may be intended, is pretty much worthless to the development team

if anyone out there needs help with understanding how to do this properly, please feel free to contact me while I am in World

    JayR —

I have sent countless crash reports to the lindens, which should have all the necessary info in them.

Obviously some people posting here have seen the performance of FL improve from release to release, and they’re happy about it. I and many others have not. On my G4 Mac, FL now crashes roughly half the time after login and about 75% of the time after TPs. This is why some of my posts here have been sort of surly.

Yes, in many ways FL is a vast improvement over the current official viewer. But it’s so unstable the idea that this viewer — at least the Mac version — is ready to be the official viewer seems crazy to me. No Linden has ever posted a response here regarding crashes on the Mac and I can’t help but wonder if they even test the FL viewer on Macs in any real way. I’ve put a lot of time and money into SL and I wonder if I should continue to bother if Macs essentially aren’t going to be supported any more.

This sort of comment may not be as useful to the programmers as, say, all the crash reports I’ve sent in, but the folks who actually run the company should pay close attention to the blog comments because they have a lot of very unsatisfied customers.

  96. 96 Tijn Erde Says:

I’m currently trying to update some shops. This time I’m facing the problems of search not responding, lag causing timeouts and unresponsiveness of scripts, and occasional problems saving notecards, as well as the common problem of text-copy acting more like text-delete than like it should. Tomorrow it will be an entire new set of bugs and problems. If I wasn’t making money with SL, I’d have quit already.

  97. 97 Kinzo Nurmi Says:

There seems to be a problem with the camera when moving through “narrow” spaces. When moving through a room the has a ceiling height of 3.4m, the camera appears unable to make up its mind, and moves in, and out at rapid rate. Going to zoom or mouse view stops the behaviour.
