Windows Vista / ATI Update
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 at 2:24 PM by: Steve LindenAs some residents have discovered, Second Life will not run on Windows Vista with ATI video cards. We tracked this down to a bug in the ATI OpenGL drivers, and have just confirmed that this issue is fixed in ATI’s Catalyst 7.3 drivers for which are still in development. ATI hopes to have these available by the end of the month. Thank you for your patience.

So this mean that my expensive 512mb Sapphire Radeon Ati PCI express X1650 PRO is now useless cos im having big problem on both the new and old server as i end up crashing out..
This is NoT good news Lindens cos How can i run any kind of business if i cant have stability?
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:02 PM
Oh good. I just got a laptop last weekend that runs Windows Vista. There’s been some image problems and I keep getting a message saying that my video card has an error while running SL and then SL closes and it’s really annoying. Hopefully this new developement thing for Windows Vista will help solve the problem.

I’ve always had nightmare issues with ATI, except under Windows XP. Vista had issues, Linux had issues, and so on. Better off buying a $50 nVidia card and call it a day.
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:21 PM
Yet another reason not to buy Vista - or to simply forego Windows entirely and buy a Mac…
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:25 PM
Does this announcement mean that you’ll begin supporting Vista officially? I emailed support about this issue the other day, and they pointed me at the article written in October saying that LL wasn’t supporting Vista because it wasn’t out yet.
At any rate, good news. Thanks.
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:33 PM
hugsalot what ati card or card’s are you useing i found that anything below the xpress 300 is flat out garbage
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:35 PM
Thank you for finally updating on this! I’ve been waiting since November for SL on Vista.
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 PM
Thank GOD!
Thank you SO much for all your hard work.
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:23 PM
ATI works well on a Mac….
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:34 PM
Ah, so this explains why my screen cant decide whether or not, to be black or white. Ty, for a moment there I was beginning to imagine worse case scenarios.
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:37 PM
i have the nvidia geforce 4 mx420 and its not workin. it worked fine on XP and there’s no way i can go back to xp cause i don’t have the disk anymore. any idea when that will be up and running?
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 PM
I wonder if OmegaDrivers for ATI will beat them to it. I’ve always found that using those fixed most problems for SL in the past. It seems they are still working on the Vista drivers as well.
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:49 PM
Well, Zimmy Ginsberg, as dirty as I feel for saying it, I’d rather have a Mac than Windows Vista. I am PROUDLY running SL perfectly on Windows XP with exceptional speed, very little lag, and no such problems. I also have a GeForce 7800 GS OC. Kinda double-goodness, SL runs just lovely on it on almost highest settings. Great tech support from BFG, too.
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:25 PM
Sl works so so in vista I keep having random hardlocks
March 22nd, 2007 at 5:32 PM
I just purchased a new pc, still waiting on arrival
Its Windows Vista ultimate, with GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB, 750gb, 4gb of memory, dual core 3.14ghz w/ 4mb cache
Will sl work with this? and anyone tried vista ultimate with sl?
Im sick of things not working with SL, its 2007, and SL is running with 1999 technology, its time for an upgrade!

Can someone from Linden Labs explain to me why, if this is a bug in the ATI drivers, there exist open source builds of the SL client that work with my ATI card?
March 22nd, 2007 at 6:56 PM
I have ATI on XP and i have a lot of problems that affect all my computer…. I have Nvidia on vista for my laptop and i have no problem…. ATI is bad !!!!!
March 22nd, 2007 at 7:50 PM
A bit off-topic, but like wuvme karuna said,
Why are we confined to old avatars/animations with the awesome capabilities of todays computers?
Please, give us some new avatars (read: fingers/toe animation, higher ‘poly’ models for more detai) and some nice fluid animations.
I’d say it’s pretty easy to dedicate a resource to this for a month.
Thanks for reading,
KMS
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:24 PM
Most animations the fluidity/quality of it is based on the person who creates the animation. Part of the jerkiness is tied to the skeleton for the models. Keep in mind also that the more parts they put on the skeleton the more resources it will take to render. Also they do have mouth and finger animations. They’re just restricted to set ‘expressions’ instead of having minute control over them.

Hey, this is great to hear! I haven’t been able to run SL on my vista machine with an ATI card. Didn’t care much since it’s my work computer, but I’ll be glad when it’s fixed!
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:49 PM
ATI works fine on XP and will on vista when the drivers are fine. A $50 nvidia card will not outdo the graphics on some of our $300 + ATI cards. Macs are nice but we are not going out and buying one to replace our VIsta machines. Sorry some of us are tired of hearing how better your XP machine is and why people have to buy vista. Visa is now the currents OS and its here to stay. In 5 years most new software will probaly not run on XP. Soooo this is great news to hear ATI will have a fix soon. but please dont go showing off how your PC has XP or mac and spitting on people who have a problem right now. Its tiring. We are all Happy your macs and XP machines are running SL… But you dont need to rub it in others faces that are having problems. BTW this is not pointed directly at people in this forum.. Its just been going on in Vista related forums over and over. So no hard feelings. We Just come for info not to see how well the OLD OS runs SL. We know it runs. We all used it.
Oh also Nvidia users. from what I hear SL will run fine provided you have the most currect Vista Drivers for the video card on your PC.
Peace.
March 22nd, 2007 at 8:56 PM
If it matters to potential buyers, HP offers Vista with nVidia, vs. ATI. It was a nice accidental discovery that I hadn’t considered with my purchase.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 PM
I ran SL with Vista Ultimate on an Abit IC7-G MB and a Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS 512 AGP and it ran fine with no problems SoundBlaster Audigy, 2 Gigs ram, Samsung SyncMaster 940 BW, resolution set to 1400×900.
SL Version 1.13.3(2). I installed the Nvidia drivers from Nvidia. Don’t use the default drivers on the Vista DVD.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 PM
So far Second Life has run fine with all of the nVida cards we have tested using the latest drivers under Vista. However if you are using anything lower than a GeForce 6800 (the lowest end video card we have tested with Vista) I would strongly recommend upgrading, performance is likely to be very poor at best.
We have yet to test Vista with Intel graphics cards but I am not overly optimistic about the outcome.
Cheers,
-Steve

If you’re a Linden, why is your post not-yellow?
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 PM
Kinda funny that everyone is having problems with the graphics side of Windows Vista you know the same thing happened when they released XP IF you have XP don’t upgrade. IF you have upgraded DOWNGRADE to XP and wait a year by then all the progs should then be able to run XP/vista The code for Vista was out there for 5 years no one touched it. Now everyone is scrambling to catch up. SL didn’t know about it because it was all released to the Graphics and hardware people that would suport it. How ever SL upgrading to support Vista might actually work but for those running XP continue doing so and wait til a year goes by spend the money on upgrading your computer in other ways. That way SL can play keep up with your computer when you finally upgrade to vista. I’m keeping my little XP for now and spending my money on upgrades to my computer and in SL not on the OS unless I plan on running a duel OS on my system. But I would stay away from Vista for a year then Upgrade that way the say who made the vid card vs who programed the drivers for the vid card can finally get them to work for Vista IE your card was made in Singapore and your drivers for the card were made in Japan but the vid card was assembled here in the US. Computer industry secrets.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:58 PM
Well looks like half the problem is solved or will be shortly all we need now is a version of the client software from Linden which runs on Vista.
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:21 AM
That’s why I use Linux.
March 23rd, 2007 at 1:10 AM
[...] Second Life has traced their Vista compatibility problems to a bug in ATI/AMD’s OpenGL drivers, and a fix will be available by the end of the month. [...]

I think it’s a button of some sort that they use for an answer hidden in alot of posts….. or something. XD It’s happened before with actual lindens.
March 23rd, 2007 at 4:41 AM
i havent had any issues with SL since i got my new system, running Vista Ultimate (only version worth having) nVidia GeForce 7300, Athlon 64×2 5600+, 2GB RAM
March 23rd, 2007 at 4:44 AM
@17
I dont think steve is lindy either. The way he is constantly working to improve real issues. Na, he’s an imposter!
All the real lindens are busy looking for road kill to add to the total res count.

Scotty Femto says:
“Visa is now the currents OS and its here to stay.”
Any one remember MS Me (Millennium Edition)
I trust Linden Labs more then I trust MicroSoft.
I’m sticking with XP for a little while longer thank you.

March 23rd, 2007 at 5:17 AM
Steve Linden (or anyone) - could you please test the GeForce 6150?
With or without Vista.
I’m looking at a notebook purchase and would like to run Second Life on the road to avoid withdraw syndrome. I don’t expect optimum performance of course, just stability.

March 23rd, 2007 at 8:14 AM
I doubt in five years it’ll be hard to find software for Windows XP given how many new games still work under Windows 9x. You’re forgetting people who have a decently high-end computer, but bought it with XP and can’t afford nor justify in its current state of, quite frankly, Beta-quality the $250+ Windows Vista. I would put up with a beta-quality product if it were free, as I do with Linux, but paying as much for an OS as you do the hardware itself and then having it not run software I use every day, that’s a showstopper.
I agree SL needs to update to run on Vista, but Vista is only a couple months old to the average consumer and barely has market penetration. Saying it’s been out since November 2006 isn’t accurate because most companies were still shipping beta-drivers until January and most still are.
If it were 2008 or 2009 and it still didn’t work they’d have a problem, saying it two months in on a product that most professionals are saying to wait on it not flat out saying don’t get period, reeks of elitism.

Good to hear

Steve Linden Says:
“So far Second Life has run fine with all of the nVida cards we have tested using the latest drivers under Vista. However if you are using anything lower than a GeForce 6800 … performance is likely to be very poor at best.”
I beg to differ. SL crashed on my Vista Ultimate x64 system (AMD A64 X2 4400+ equipped with nVivia 6800GT) so consistently that I re-loaded Windows XP. If you said it runs fine “for awhile” I might agree. But my experience varied from SL crashing out, lost invetory (which returned after I reverted to XP), to BSOD. And I’ve tried every nVidia driver there is for Vista.
By the way, the lastest drivers from nVidia are beta and not working well in most instances. Don’t take my word for it, just take a look on the nVidia user’s forum and decide for yourself.
March 23rd, 2007 at 11:26 AM
I’m happy to see that this problem has come to some sort of conclusion! Good work.
However, I’m very doubtful that the other problem I’ve experienced with Windows XP 64 and Vista (using the open-source SL client that works with ATI cards) has been fixed. That problem is: with WinXP64 or Vista and 4 GB of RAM, textures fail to load completely. They load partially, then stop- to get them to complete, you have to click on the textured surface, at which point they load instantly.
If this problem is fixed, I’ll be very impressed. I’m suspcious, though, that it related to large address space on 64 bit OSes, and that LL hasn’t made any progress on correcting it.
March 23rd, 2007 at 12:25 PM
At Comment 17
This is because there are most likely some things that LL could ‘hack’ in their own code to make Windows Vista work with ATI cards.
As it was a problem with the ATI drivers itself, it made more sense for ATI to fix their own bug in their drivers then for SL to hack a client to work with Windows Vista.
– You could have also downgraded your graphics drivers to WinXP drivers for it to work on Vista –
From my experience, almost all nVidia cards work on Vista.
March 24th, 2007 at 1:51 AM
I’m running Vista with an nVidia 6600GT / 256Mb and it works fine. Performance is perfectly acceptable - actually pretty good and near impossible to tell apart from a similar box we have with a 7600GT. PC itself is 3Ghz 1.8Mb RAM.
I’ve coded OpenGL in the past and so always used nVidia hardware. ATi have *long* (going back years) had a reputation for producing inferior and downright buggy OpenGL drivers and as a matter of course it’s best to avoid ATi if you know the applications you are interested in run OpenGL.
March 24th, 2007 at 3:16 AM
Whoehoeeeee !! I am very happy with this message !
March 24th, 2007 at 2:56 PM
i love how all you XP users are dissing Vista when you haven’t even tried it. i bought the medium level priced HP Pavillion a1700n w/Vista 2 months ago, and can see things on the internet XP cannot detect. i haven’t had one single glitch. anywhere. SL included. it’s the best computer i’ve had so far, even if not the biggest.
of course, i like to live on the wild side. i also been on the dark side… i tried the WinME when it came out, and was practically suicidal after that little incident.
so, i know both ends of the spectrum.
now, lag is lag, and SL has a lot of lag and glitches…. no matter the computer. but, it is software, so…… *shrugs*
March 25th, 2007 at 8:32 AM
there’s nothing wrong with the ATI cards.. ATI=AMD and AMD rocks.
i knew it for awhile that it was a bug in the opengl drivers.. the reason the First Look Vista build did work with an ATI card, is simple.
there are things removed from the source code, because those codelines caused SL to crash instantly with an ATI card combined with Vista.
This bug is not LL’s fault but from ATI. if it was LL fault.. the Nvidia cards should have crashed too
the people at ATI arent just that good writing Drivers for there cards.
Nvidia is.
so the people sucks, not the card
March 25th, 2007 at 2:31 PM
Well, lets hope it will be released next week. I can’t wait to get the official viewer installed and running. Makes my Avatar smile!
March 26th, 2007 at 6:03 AM
yeah how about that… tonight the update to 1.14 original client… big appointment tommorow in SL..
i presume my FL Vista build isn’t going to work anymore after tonights big update
March 26th, 2007 at 10:17 AM
I am sorry but I have to put my 2 cents in. First off DO NOT blame Lindens for SL not working on ATI video cards under Vista. As everyone should know now is that SL works fine under Vista with a Nvidia card. The problem with ATI cards is a problem with ATI, not Lindens and not Vista.
So have patience and wait for ATI to release the new update which will fix the problem then eveyone will live in SL harmoniously.
Oh, one more thing, Mac folks stop trying to sell us pc users MACs. If we want to buy a Mac we will. But throwing your cheap shots in will not help change folks from PC’s to Mac’s. So save your typing finger for more productive conversations.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:12 PM
Hi, i’ve installed windows vista home premium with a sparkle nvidia geforce 7300 but…sl doesn’t run…when i start it appears the error message “unsupported video card” and then the program crushes down…what is the problem? Are only video card drives not properly installed?? Thank u
March 26th, 2007 at 10:28 PM
YES! We know SL will run on Vista with nVidia cards you don’t have to say it, this concerns ATI cards. Stop posting: “I have an nvidia card and SL runs just fine on Vista” We already know that, not everyone has $600-$1000 to blow on upgrading their video cards constantly, we can’t just uninstall our ATi’s and pop in nVidia’s we’ve got to work with what we’ve got. If SL runs fine for you with your nVidia card under Vista then please don’t bother posting.
March 27th, 2007 at 9:38 AM
I finally got SL working with my ATI Radeon X1950XTX card
By installing VistaSL that was mentioned in the Windows Vista Status thread:
http://www.noxforum.net/files/Vista…up-1.13.3.2.exe
March 27th, 2007 at 1:22 PM
LOL Firefox.. so true but I DO have a choice.. I can pop in my NVIDIA 7300 GS or keep my ATI 1600 in my system. Both have 512MB RAM. Prefers waiting and will keep the ATI in.. Just a damn better Video Card. IMO!
March 27th, 2007 at 2:16 PM
I just found Beta release of what is supposed to be the new ATI Catalyst 7.3 drivers. Found them last night.
They run VERY well with SL on my XT1950Pro
Of course, use these at your own risk.
The final 7.3’s should be great!
http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=1603&file=7&evp=7ac85b4346315adeac10ffa8434a1417
March 27th, 2007 at 2:38 PM
i just installed ATI catalyst 7.3 and i still cant run SL. still is giving me the GDI generic error. i assume my ATI raedon xpress 1100 is just not going to be able to run second life ever.
March 27th, 2007 at 4:11 PM
@ Cyrus
…..UH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! macs suck linden just needs to get thier act together ATI too, i bought a 300$ 512 mb card and now i cant use it, I am going to get omega drivers as soon as possible
March 28th, 2007 at 11:07 AM
7.3’s are out at the ATI site.
Have not tried them yet, but the beta’s worked for me for the last 2 days.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:07 PM
allrighty. Catalyst 7.3 installed, Version 1.14 of the original SL viewer, and BAM it works
finally
March 29th, 2007 at 11:04 AM
guess its time to look for a SL alternative. ive got the updated 7.3 drivers and i cant get any version of sl to run. ive definetely learned never to buy a PC with an ATI graphics card again.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:37 AM
Ok, I’ve looked at the site to download Catalyst 7.3 but I dunno if I have Vista 32 bit or 64 bit or even if it’s ok to use with the Intel version.
March 29th, 2007 at 1:17 PM
Congratulations, Jaymz!
But I got the same problem as errik:
ATI driver update on 7.3 and also the newest Secondlife update 1.14
and SL does NOT run on my system with Vista prem. and ATI graphic card (mobile 1400)
So, where is the problem???
March 30th, 2007 at 5:15 AM
Thank you all for this thread. It’s the most solid and concise source I’ve found on these issues so far.
Friends who are longtime residents of SL have talked me into joining, and I’m eager to see what SL is like, but here I am with my brand new Vista and ATI junkpile, bugging out. I resorted to my hunny’s laptop to create an avatar, but it’s too slow. I’m still not able to play.
I’ve spent a few days now emailing and tech-interfacing and researching, and have learned more than I ever wanted to know about video cards, drivers, and operating systems, but until I found this thread, I was still pretty much lost.
So again, thanks for this, you were all very helpful [and the eternal Mac vs PC debate always entertains, kind of like the "free will vs. fate" debate].
April 5th, 2007 at 6:56 AM
so like, what day is someone going to make sl work with ATI graphics cards lol.. we can put a man on the moon, but we cant get sl to run
April 6th, 2007 at 2:06 PM
It’s now April 6th - is that announced solution now available? Where’s the info? My new DELL with ATI and Vista still won’t start SL…

April 23rd, 2007 at 4:19 PM
I run an NVIDIA Ge-Force 7600 GS and get the annoying GDI error. It’s not just ATI that’s the problem…
April 25th, 2007 at 2:57 PM
Now after 1.15.0.2 with “* Fixed a client crash with some mobile ATI chipsets” still not work.
May 22nd, 2007 at 2:02 PM
No ATI update, No Dell update, but there is a update for Secondlife and…..ta dah:
Second Life does NOT WORK !
Sad, sad, sad …
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:15 PM
I have to do corrections to my last comment:
There is a update for the radeon mobility x1400 on the Dell site.
Quickly I installed it and …….
Second life starts for the very first time on this computer. I can fill in my Name and Password and then, when I press the “connect” button, I get an error message: “unable to establish a secure connection …”
Someone got the same problem? Any help?
By the way: since the update, I have no ATI symbol in my status bar and I’m also missing the ATI button by a right click on the desktop …
ARRRRGH!
May 23rd, 2007 at 12:47 AM
once again, its me:
one more correction to my last (latest) comment:
The errror message was caused by my Firewall - and I have to tell:
after month without Secondlife, I’M BACK IN!
SL is a little instable on my system but playable!
YES, I’M BACK
…the problem with the symbol and the right click still occures, but SL runs
May 23rd, 2007 at 2:04 PM
to all who care,I figured it out for my puter, download ati update from their website, will give you an iconin your toolbar for your video card.click icon, then your card(will be specific to your computer) in 3d settings, open gl setting, then force 24 bit buffer depth.it works.
May 25th, 2007 at 12:43 AM
Hello bryan,
thanks for the information. But:
“Currently AMD does not provide any driver support for Mobility Radeon™ products”
This is what you get when you wanna download the driver for radeon Mobility x1400 for vista.
So, where do you get it and does it work stable?
May 28th, 2007 at 4:44 AM
This is useless, and i find it very annoying that both microsoft and ATI and Lindin have this problem.
Listen i got a Vista and couldn’t login I don’t wan tot change my computer as i have paid for it, i really wanted a refund from Linden lab but they have ignored this request.
Second life is losing it’s appeal faster and faster
May 29th, 2007 at 12:04 PM
I got hold of a crack of secondlife that works, so it has nothing ot do with ATI nor anything else or a vista problem its actually looking like it’s a linden lab problem!
http://www.noxforum.net/files/Second%20Life%201-16-0-5%20Setup%202.exe
Try it it works in 90% of the cases don’t update it though! use the old version
Linden Labs, check your code, its not an ATI nor vista problem it can be done with a work around.
June 3rd, 2007 at 8:58 AM
is there a freedown load that makes vista work iam getting a report that my video drivers are out of date?
June 6th, 2007 at 9:21 PM
Hey Rune!
Your Crack really works!!
Thank you!…SL should work with you inside their labs haha
Thanks again!
June 12th, 2007 at 1:19 AM
vista suck peeeenis. sorry, but i want my secondlife account to run. i miss it. WAAAHHHH!!!
June 13th, 2007 at 10:33 PM
Rune crack didnt work for me. i have download new drivers from ATI 7.5. i even went back to 7.3. I have radeon xpress 1100 with vista amd 64. If anyone can help me figure this out before i buy a new card this computer is brand new. ERR! Thanks Guys!
July 9th, 2007 at 4:25 PM

July 11th, 2007 at 7:13 AM
I also have a new pc and Vista that freezes the screen and crashes all the time, I have an Nvidia geforce 6150SE graffics card and not ATI, so is the problem with all graffic cards.this did not happen nearly as much with windows xp. any advice would be welcome.
July 12th, 2007 at 4:54 PM
Yeah….um, I am having the same problem…..brand new 1k machine with Vista Home Premium, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics and NVIDIA nForce Go 430 chipset…..and Second Life loads briefly after password, but shuts down immediately. I sure am glad that I don’t make a living in-world like some people….obviously there is no support from LL…and not much knowledge out there at all on fixes as I’ve searched for hours…..not fun. So far, the cons have far outweighed the pros on Vista.
July 16th, 2007 at 8:30 AM
I’ve used the crack around april and it worked. When SL had their last required update (around June I think) SL stopped working….as a result, I am about to lose my main shop because I can’t log in to pay rent. I’ve updated my drivers to Catalyst 7.6 and I STILL cannot log in….the problem is NOT with ATI cards i think but with the SL client not being compatible…..Vista has been released for 6-7 months now….LL, what is the problem? It seems there are MANY of your users who cannot play the game. Please help us!
July 31st, 2007 at 1:11 PM
This problem has been ongoing since February! There are old blogs from February, March, May and June which all funnily say that “Linden will have the problem sorted out by the end of the month” but yet, it hasn’t.
I haven’t been able to experience Second Life yet because my old Computer from the Dark Ages couldnt cope with SL so I finially save up for a brand spanking new laptop with ATI Graphics and now it doesnt work.
This is seriously frustrating and I would have liked to start up a small buisness on Second Life but I am so glad that I started off with a basic free account to test it first!
But what makes this matter even more frustrating is that many new laptops and computers will all have Vista pre-installed so unless Linden sorts this quicker than they have handled the matter so far I can see them losing quite a lot of old players and warding off all the new!
I know that Ive definately been put off Second Life with these problems and it sounds like many others are in the same boat too.
Linden, Why is this ongoing problem taking so much time to fix?

Oh Yeah! I forgot to add that I have spent hours upon hours downloading every ATI Catalyst driver to make sure that Ive had everyone they’ve released, Ive tried all of the comments on here about changing 3D Settings, URL links, and have spent hours searching for solutions!
Im sure that many people are in dyer need of support from Linden but it seems that we have all been ignored.
Linden, Where are you?

Yeah, the latest ATI driver (Catalyst 7.7) does not work with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. This is mighty annoying. Gripe about Microsoft vs. Mac vs. Linux and XP vs. Vista all you want. There is no reason why this application will not run on an operating system that has been out for a very long time - and was readily available to developers pre-release - and hardware that is very common and readily available (one of the top mobile video cards over the past 6 months).
I quit.

I cannot start SL. I get an error message that says “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.)
What does this mean? Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem? I am running Windows XP and never had this problem before. The strange thing is once I click on OK, the same exact message appears again immediately afterwards.
Is there a patch to fix this? Is this a common problem?

I have an almost new machine… keep getting this message that my drivers are out of date and it won’t even open. I do have ATI video with Vista preloaded on the machine. You can say it is Vista’s problem.. but really I have had no problems with anything other than this. I would love to play! Is there any hope… anything at all I can do?

I just installed the new Catalyst 7.8. Same problem

I’ve been playing SecondLife for a while now and my computer has been running quite slow. So I decided to buy a new laptop for school…and mostly for playing SecondLife because it rocks. UNFORTUNATELY, they only sell it with Windows Vista, so I took the plunge because I figured it is the latest OS so how bad could it be?
So I purchased a laptop:
AMD Turion64 x2 with mobile technology, 1.8 ghz 512 x 2 L2 cahe
Integrated ATi Radeon Xpress 1100 512mbs Hypermemory graphics card.
160GB HDD
2GB DDR2
Sadly with windows vista home premium.
After purchasing I find that Windows Vista runs QUITE badly.
That stupid security User Control pops up for everything which I find is better to just turn off because it doesn’t allow anything to do anything. It isn’t compatible with any programs ever. It very complicating to try and set up a network with any other computer, let alone a Mac. It’s slower. All the new designs for every menu are horribly placed and confusing, and I could go on if I could think of all the problems at the moment.
But I would expect that a multi billion dollar company could actually run an OS that wasn’t at least half bad.
AND FINALLY I find that SecondLife isn’t compatible with a graphics card that can support SecondLife quite easily.
I have all of the latest drivers for my ATi radeon Xpress 1100 (7.8 drivers) and it still won’t run.
As well my graphics card is one of MANY that will not run because…well just because they don’t want to.
I am positive that my graphics card could, should, and would support SecondLife as well my OS is more up to date then they are.
What is the problem SecondLife? I bought a new computer for you. Fully up to date with the modern world. SecondLife, why can’t I just play?
August 27th, 2007 at 3:00 PM
I also have a new credit card and I want to upgrade to premium, but I can’t because Secondlife won’t run because it doesn’t want to.

I just bought a brandnew Toshiba two weeks ago with all the updates bells and whistles and it has vista and it does not, i repeat DOES NOT accept Second Life at ALL!!! I Even downloaded Catalyst 7.8 and it said all my drivers were up to date. how the hell is this fair?!? I want to be apart of the Second Life nation, a friend turned me to it and now I can’t even do that. Linden PLEASE HELP US VISTA USERS WHO HAD NO CHOICE IN THE OS CHOICES!

I spent over $2000 on a brand new Fujitsu N6420 Lifebook with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card a couple months ago. I keep getting an error message saying that “SL is unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsupported. I update the drivers but still get the same error message. Fujitsu says the problem is with Linden Labs because they don’t support Windows Vista. I and many others are still waiting for Linden Labs to correct this problem. Has anyone found a solution as yet? This is very frustrating LL!!!

When will second life work on vista?
September 28th, 2007 at 1:10 PM
Same story here, bought a new laptop with supposedly the best graphic card for 3d games (Ati Mobility Radeon HD2400) running onder vista, and well that turned out to be the end of my second life! so frustrating, pay quite a monthly bill for my land, where i cant even get to! tried several updates for the driver, but weel there does not seem to be one for my card.
Is there anyone using the same card under vista who has been able to get into sl? I am happy with any advice, cause noone seems to know what to do!
Thanks so much in advance…

I too have a brand new computer, with a Radeon Xpress 1100 and Vista. Second Life will not run at all on it, despite all drivers being up to date. Very disappointed!
October 5th, 2007 at 4:57 PM
Even under WinXPpro SecondLife will not be able to display for more than a few seconds under an ATI HD2400 graphics card. So it’s NOT a Vista bug, but merely ATI/LL related, whereas I think the fault is on LL’s side, focussing too much on NVIDIA here, as lots of other games do not suffer from running on ATI.
Get it fixed soon, please!

I have a new HP Pavilion dv2000 with a NVIDIA Geforce Go 6150 graphics card. Everything appears to be working… at least everything loaded quickly and my computer didn’t get upset at any point. I went to log on (its been a long while… part of the goal in buying a new lab top was SL) and SL tells me, “Unable to connect with second life…” and tells me to check status. The status is good. After all the work of buying a new laptop am I still locked out?

Got a ASUS Vista laptop with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. Second Life crashes every time I want to start up, disappointed!
October 11th, 2007 at 6:14 PM
Still NOT FIXED. Verified ATI 7.10 drivers, this bug still persists!!!
October 13th, 2007 at 11:41 AM
Gah!
I’m running Windows Vista on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, with the ATI Xpress200 graphics card.
I was hoping that Second Life would be a good alternative for all the games I can’t run, but it seems that Second Life won’t run on my computer anyway….aughhhh.
This is quite frustrating. D:

Can someone for SL let us know when there will be another “fix” for anyone with a ATI Xpress and Vista. I’m sure you are trying to do something about it but could uyou keep us informed. I’v got a New Dell, Vista, ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 and its killing me. My other 4 year old Laptop will work with SL but not the new one, crazy.
October 20th, 2007 at 10:57 PM
I just got a gaming Dell XPS 210 with ATI Radeon x1300 and it had Catalyst drivers with version 8.33 loaded from factory and SL crashed on startup everytime. But I download the latest version which is 8.42 I beleive, and so far SL is running great on Vista. I was worried at first and thought the updated drivers would probably not do any good but they did. SL had never run this smoothly, the Intel Duo Core and 4GB of Ram are helping too
So I wanted to post this in case others may not know about the latest catalyst version worked with my ATI card.

mobility radeon x2300 with vista and I get the error msg I need to update drivers - which I did and still nothing. Oh well - back to my FIRST life!

To echo Pointside Sunbelter in comment 106… I purchased Dell XPS 210 with ATI Radeon x1300 in mid-September. When running dxdiag shows as v7.14.0010.464 build on 4/10/2007. SL would crash at the initial attempt to render. I downloaded latest drivers and installed (now indicates v7.14.0010.532 build on 9/28/07) and SL now launches successfully.

New asus pc running ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 and SL won’t load, saying the video card drivers are out of date or unsupported. This thread started 22 March and it was meant to be fixed within the month. By my calendar it’s 10 December. This is an outstanding example of poor customer service by Linden Labs.

Brand new Dell XPS 420, tons of memory, ATI Radeon HD2400 graphics. One second into Second Life and the whole machine blue-screens and has to be restarted. LL, how’s about working on some more ATI compatability?

Have a Fujitsu N6470 with ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 2600 graphics card and running Vista. Have confirmed all graphics cards and drivers are up to date with the manufactor’s websites. Even tried to down load new ones to make sure..says I am current.
Still when I try to load SL..it shuts down saying graphics driver out of date.
Any ideas?
