Rolling Restart on Main Grid is Complete
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 at 9:27 AM by: Pathfinder LindenUPDATE 2:20PM: The Rolling Restart is complete, thank you for your patience.
Update 10:50am - Rolling Restart is now underway.
Correction: 11:20am - the “llParticleSystem( [] ) may not shut down reliably” bug is not fixed in this update - that’ll be fixed in the next viewer. Rather, this update fixes a new issue introduced in 1.13.4 where the effects of the bug were more widespread. Sorry for the confusion! — Joshua Linden

We are initiating a rolling restart of all regions on the main grid in about 20 minutes. This will take 2-3 hours to complete across the entire grid, and folks on affected regions will be alerted during the process.
This restart is for a new simulator deploy that fixes a number of issues:
Changes:
* Legacy particle system replacements
* ‘Share with Group’ checkbox now cleared when deeding objects
Bugs Fixed:
* Fixed llParticleSystem([ ]) bug affects unlinked and root prims
* Fixed SVC-48: llSetScriptState is failing in some tasks
* Fixed SVC-47: llSetPrimitiveParameters with multiple setposition calls capped at 10m, affecting home made TPs [a.k.a. WarpPos]
* Fixed SVC-15: Random Prim Drift

* Fixed SVC-48: llSetScriptState is failing in some tasks
* Fixed SVC-47: llSetPrimitiveParameters with multiple setposition calls capped at 10m, affecting home made TPs
* Fixed SVC-15: Random Prim Drift
Yay!!!
And about time.
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 AM
either yosu crashed not long after this was posted, or warnings are not being given out….
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:54 AM
*whew* finally the llSetScriptState bug will be fixed. I’ve had a stressful week, since some of my best selling items were crippled by that bug. Hopefully the fix stays this time, not like the fix on Friday that was rolled back again right away.
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:56 AM
I would like to point out that the warpPos bug (SVC-47: llSetPrimitiveParameters) didn’t just affect ‘home made TPs’, it affected commercial uses too. And it wasn’t just for use as a teleport replacement, it was also being used to move non-physical objects, and even AVs. Thank you for fixing this bug, yet I hope you add this as a test case to prevent this from occurring again.
March 22nd, 2007 at 9:59 AM
How about WarpPos?
I guess that didn’t get fixed:(
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 AM
woot for random prim drift fix

March 22nd, 2007 at 10:20 AM
ok Im not the one that yells the most in here BUT……
You guys better be done with the restat before 3PM SLT cos Im getting married and Im telling ya is you touch my sim at that point ….. well you figure it out :s
You all have a nice day

‘home made TPs’?
Raises eyebrow
Not reliable like the ‘real thing’ then?
I dunno, those pesky residents, creating content that works until someone breaks the infrastructure.
Not like your regular TPs which only break when the grid grinds to a halt because of high traffic then?

Why when I go to following link am I required to enter my id and password when I click on Physics, Scripts, Simulation links?
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC?report=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.project:openissues-panel
I just want to read, I don’t want to make changes.
If I want to post questions than yes I do have to log in, but otherwise why should I log in?
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 AM
because that is how jira works rex. no like? dont go. want to use it? get over it.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 AM
Yeah, ‘home made TPs’ does make it sound like kind of a marginalized unimportant thing. What about the thousands of ’store bought’ teleporters that got just as broken?
Of course, glad to hear it’s going to be fixed (again), and glad to hear that the llParticleSystem([]) will be fixed too. Fortunately the other problems didn’t affect me quite as much as some folks.
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:53 AM
I am so glad that {Fixed SVC-48: llSetScriptState is failing in some tasks} is included in this! I felt so crippled by the problems its dysfunction created for me in so many ways. If it works and sticks this time, stays fixed, I will more than sing your praises, I’ll dance them, too!
March 22nd, 2007 at 10:55 AM
phewww my sims are restarting as we speak …. Kisses to Linden
If you get bored tomorrow the wedding party is from 12pm SLT at Birmingham City … kinda a big castle
hehe
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:06 AM
That is how it works? Hmm.
Than why does it allow people to view SVCs when they click on “Popular issues” link?
It doesn’t make sense to restrict access from “Open Issues” when you might be able to get to a SVC from the “Popular Issues”
Is like somebody puts a lock on front door, but the windows are open.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:07 AM
This may be part of the restart or something else… I have been unable to log-in for about 30 minutes, but what is unusual to me this time is that i countinue to get “The System is logging you out…” messages with countinuously changing times for when the account will be available. I wait until the time has passed, try to log in, and get a new time…
I think I liked the vague ’something unexpected’ notices better…
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:13 AM
Why do we no longer get inworld announcements about rolling restarts? first thing I heard about this was when a workman arrived to tell me he’d come to demolish the house… er I mean, “this region will be restarting in 5 minutes”..
There was a ime when Lindens would announce grid-wide that they’re beginning a rolling restart that would affect all regions. IT would be nice to know WHY it’s happening… or at least to be able to prepare a bit beforehand. Not everything being worked on at any given time can be locked down and saved in 5 minutes.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:21 AM
I had a 5 minute warning that the region I was in was going to restart. *shrug*
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Not really a complaint, but I’ll echo the comment about being warned in world about the restart. Never got a notice..just locked up and crashed. No notice arrived for me, at all.
Good luck with the deployment.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:25 AM
I am Sylfie and am not rezzing anything but the walls, items for sale are not rezzing. I am invisible.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:28 AM
I keep getting the message “Character is in the logout process and will be available at XX:XX March 22nd 2007.” The time just increases as time does. Is this due to the server downtime?
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:45 AM
how about extending the notice to 10 min? I TP’ed out from one region only to arrive in another that was shutting down in 30 sec :((((
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:46 AM
I also got logged out without notice, but I’d only just logged in — there may have been a notice and I missed it. :p
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:49 AM
Why does this always hit european evening time. Yet again business has been lost.
Sorry to have a grumble I know these things have to be done but we need to earn our money to pay our rent.

@Hg: your char may still be “logged in” to the sim, see if you can get on as an alt and see if you’re still there.
March 22nd, 2007 at 11:57 AM
good lord …
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:01 PM
I got the message. It completely crashed SL (for me). OH the crash logger then promptly crashed.
I immediately logged in, opened map, started to tp to find out how short 5 minutes computer time really is.
Now I’m nowhere, half dressed. And all I wanted was a little fun, cause poor me has a cold and feels AWFUL. And it isn’t WEDNESDAY or hasn’t anyone noticed that small fact.
The more I read in the blog comments the more I dread opening a store. But, I have so much fun making stuff, learning more stuff, so I can make more stuff. I gotta do something with it. Maybe I’ll leave it all in the Governors Office. ;P
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:13 PM
The assurance of “fixed” is only a temporary solution to a temporary problem to appease the masses.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:29 PM
yaaaaaaay LL messed up again !!!! YAAAAAAAAAY :/
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:30 PM
Re 25: Apparently my previous logout was just an ordinary sim crash. I did get a notice for the intentional restart. Of course, this’ll be the third or fourth time my sim’s rebooted in the last two hours.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:34 PM
Um now particle systems now broke.
Oi Vey.
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:39 PM
rolling restart restarted like 5 different regions next to mine lol… every new region i went to my countdown blue window thing appeard and the time was shorter.. felt like a horror movie. ATTACK OF THE BLUE COUNTDOWN RESTART WINDOW boohahahahahaha ha

yeah my sim caeshu has been restarted, rebooted, crash and who knows what else since last week… i can’t even count how many times. sure is to get traffic at a mall when it crashes or reboots so manytimes. and truth, my traffic has declined since last wednesday.
oh well think positive!! gotta be a plan that LL is doing.

March 22nd, 2007 at 12:50 PM
Is the Paypal issue fixed yet?
If not, when?
March 22nd, 2007 at 12:52 PM
BTW I got 4 mins notice for the rolling restart….
AND I was in bed and enjoying it…. at the time
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:33 PM
So does this mean private sims aren’t getting the restart? Here I thought the island I hang out on and own a parcel on had been effected, but the sim owner is telling me WarpPos still doesn’t work.
March 22nd, 2007 at 1:54 PM

So far I hope to hell that either this new “fix” gets rolled back or that the absolute HELL I am experiencing in-world is unrelated and temporary.
Right now, I am experiencing all of the same symptoms that we had the last time a rolling update (which was shortly reverted) was implemented.
If these effects are related to something else like scalability and these issues are indeed fixed, then kudos for the fix, LL!
@37 my warpPos() teleporters on the islands I inhabit work fine, at the moment. It is regular TP and object rezzing and such that fails 100% of the time
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:32 PM
“… the “llParticleSystem( [] ) may not shut down reliably” bug is not fixed in this update - that’ll be fixed in the next viewer. Rather, this update fixes a new issue introduced in 1.13.4 where the effects of the bug were more widespread. …” — Joshua Linden
Thanks for the fix and impending fix!
Just prior to the rolling restart I tried reproducing the shut-off bug on the main grid (with the latest first look viewer) and was unable to successfully reproduce it on child, parent or unlinked prims.
Is anyone else still seeing this bug while using the latest first look viewer?

Can anyone tell me why Ranunculus isnot avilable right now?

Good things about SL today : #1
I just finished an intermediate building class !!!
Previously –three consecutive days (Monday Tuesday and Wednesday), the classes i signed up for were either abandoned, or i couldnt rezz well enough or copy or link well enough to attempt the class
So Yay.. i learned something new today
——–
Good things about SL today : #2
I managed to get my cut and paste and camera to work!!
Previously — for almost a week the Alt/Ctrl mouse camera has been looping me into weird positions, zooming when i meant to tilt and pan, and control C control V was only about 20 percent successful. Granted i did reinstall the software, clear cache every crash and put new batteries in my keyboard again, but these never worked before.. so…
So YaY i did some building today!
———
Good things about SL today : #3
I managed to teleport without crashing more than 50 percent of the time and i only got my shoes up my butt once! Crashes and Shoe Buggery have been my constant shadow since the bad update of last year…
So I managed to arrive some places unembarrassed, unbald, un buggered.. and without having to pick my jewellery out of my thighs
Yayyy….
Could it be… Could it be…???? things are improving?
thank you.. whoever… for whatever… keep going.
March 22nd, 2007 at 2:52 PM
I can’t rez anything that I’ve copied, all regions I visit are a mess. How is anyone to do business?
sheesh!!
I will make sure I don’t upload anything this time as not to end up loosing my uploads and the L$ I paid to upload them like the last time.
March 22nd, 2007 at 3:06 PM
Horray, WarpPos is back!!
And I don’t think they meant any offence with the “home made” comment. Even the transporters you buy at the store are “home made”, lol. just means you used a scripted teleporter. Geez touchy folks on the blog, lol.
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:18 PM
cool, so now I’m crashing while standing still, crashing while turning, crashing while selecting objects, and my Linden written sliding door script is completely borked, even after restiing scripts and rezzing a new one.
Way to go Linden, yet another rushed out ‘bug fix” that breaks far more than it fixes….
March 22nd, 2007 at 4:50 PM
You know what would be good?
If Lindens put a list on the internet of every problem residents report, with an updating count of the numbers of complaints received about that issue.
and beside it the resolution required, the date it was resolved.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this list just kept getting longer and longer with new bugs/errors outstripping resolved ones.
Mind you, if such a list was published on the web, would the huge corporates and others keep signing up, or would they be a bit sceptical about it.
But then it would at least give residents a resource to consult to see whether the weird stuff that happens to them also happens to others.
Just a suggestion- won’t be instigated, but a suggestion nevertheless

“If Lindens put a list on the internet of every problem residents report, with an updating count of the numbers of complaints received about that issue.”
They do https://jira.secondlife.com/cas/login?service=https%3A%2F%2Fjira.secondlife.com%2Fsecure%2FDashboard.jspa
and you can vote to have the bug that annoys pushed up the list.
Go for it.
March 23rd, 2007 at 6:12 AM
Location: Dangsan
Repo bug:
1)create prim
2)place texture on one face
3)rotate texture using rotation(degrees) up/down buttons
4)when it hits 180 degrees, the number goes off by +/-.02 degrees
Also, sim performance since the rolling restart have been steadily declining. Usually good performance, but in the last day, time dialations and sim fps will bottom out.
Keep trying, sometimes the scatter fire method of fixing things works.
Cheers,
Cappy

I hae just one thing to ask: why the feature that allowed WarpPos has been classified as “bug” and consequently fixed? I think many developers (not me, never used it) found it useful, and i don’t see what problems leaving it could lead to SL…
@Frantisek: something like that happens sometimes with path cut, it refuses, categorically, to set to certain values and rounds above or below the value you wrote… especially annoying if you needed precision like me >:(
