Preview of Second Life 1.13.4(6) up on the Beta Test Grid
Thursday, March 8th, 2007 at 2:28 PM by: Joshua LindenWe’ve been making almost daily updates on the Beta Test Grid for some time and we appreciate the residents who’ve been trying it out. We’re in the final testing phase of Second Life 1.13.4, and are planning to deploy it next week, so please stop by the Beta Grid and help out.
We plan on rolling out the server side of 1.13.4 next Wednesday. An optional viewer will be posted shortly thereafter and include the changes from the First Look: Render Pipeline Improvements branch as well as countless other fixes. You can try them both out on the Beta Grid now!

you can test how often you crash compared to the main client! how useful
March 8th, 2007 at 2:41 PM
* Fixed llSetLinkPrimiticeParams to move specified child prim
I sure hope more care is used in the coding then in the blog post.
March 8th, 2007 at 2:51 PM
Will the update fix the ‘missing texture’ bug and other avatar-related bugs (invisible avatars, stay-grey avatars, non-fitting shoes which appear normal to the wearer, etc)? If so, I’ll be quite happy!
March 8th, 2007 at 3:13 PM
i have a vender alert using a mao ..that is education by massachusetts …the ic fillers is open …SL need fixes …
sorry for put u guys out like that but i do want icsl filler to be ok for everyone …and not ownly that but like being on here…
March 8th, 2007 at 3:24 PM
How about the inventory folders? Will these remain closed when I close them and then close my inventory or do I keep opening a new inventory window each time?
* Fix for Not able to delete objects which contain no copy items
Was this every a problem? I never had this problem.
* Fixed classifieds being deleted instead of auto-renewing
Are we ever going to get reimbursed for this? I still haven’t received a refund.
March 8th, 2007 at 3:51 PM
How bout fixing the packet loss?
March 8th, 2007 at 3:54 PM
It seems they can’t fix the inventory folder problem although they sure have had read it a thousand times.

@Ravanne Sullivan:
Oops! Thanks! Fixed!
@Sabrina Gagliano:
Unfortunately there aren’t any specific fixes to these issues in 1.13.4. However, we are actively working on resolving these issues.
@Cappy Frantisek:
The inventory folder issue has been fixed in Beta viewers since 1.13.4.1 (Feb 21st). Please try out the Beta and verify that the issue is resolved.
We believed we had found/fixed/corrected the classifieds issue and issued refunds last week. Just today we identified another possible cause. I’m investigating what further action needs to be taken. Please contact Support to report the issue if you have been affected.
March 8th, 2007 at 4:26 PM
I see the water problem still isn’t being addressed. it’s been what - 3 months or more now? and how many ‘fixes’ and updates?
March 8th, 2007 at 4:27 PM
A few updates back, the release notes claimed a fix for the bug which unseats you when you change clothes.
“*Fixed avatar standing up when close are dragged onto the avatar.
This can be found here: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/27/first-look-update-new-version-available-58537/
This, however has not been fixed. It never happened. And nothing was said in response to my (and several others’) comments to this fact.
Please explain what’s goin on. A lot of people really hate this bug. It hampers all kinds of activities. Will you guys ever fix it?
/me supports your cause

Animated textures that use offsets are not diaplyed properly when the SetColor function is applied. The entire texture is displayed instead of the frame definded by the offset when the a color is applied.
March 8th, 2007 at 4:29 PM
Dear Lindens
Ok, somehow I managed to fix my avatar. I even managed to re-collect everything I’d lost. I’m in hock to about 15 people, but what the hell. It’s only MY money. But I’m wondering if you could help me out with another small problem?
How do I get rid of the 2 DOZEN SEPERATE instances of “Clothing”, “Trashcan”, “Lost and Found” and other folders I didn’t create? I want to make it clear - there’s about 2 dozen of EACH!!
Personally, I think if you REALLY want to make it up to people then pad their wallets. Given the last 24 hours plus, it’d be a really nice gesture.
I wait with only slightly bated breath.
March 8th, 2007 at 4:34 PM
Ooops. my mistake. On closer inspectionm, waaay down the listt. Steve posted a comment., stating that the av standing for clothes change requires a server side fix.
Which SHOULD mean that it will be fixed after this update, yes?
The day this is fixed, I’m going to run around hugging lindens

March 8th, 2007 at 4:41 PM
Thanks Joshua!
I hope the Linden Family will succeed in defeating the avatar-bugs. It doesn’t happen a whole lot, but just enough to be distracting when you’re really ‘into the game’…
March 8th, 2007 at 4:43 PM
@WarKirby Magojiro:
Please don’t just trust what is or isn’t in the release notes! Hop into the Beta Test grid and try it out.
@Shai Khalifa:
The viewer that follows the 1.13.4 server release next week addresses the “water problem”. Or try out any of the First Look viewers which are compatible with the main grid and also address the water problem.
March 8th, 2007 at 4:56 PM
Hell yes. The unseating bug is fixed on the beta.
For the first time. being able to sit down and change outfits. The awesomeness of the moment almost brought a tear to my eye.
When is this rolling out on the main grid ?

Hi Joshua,
i can read a lot about fixing probs. And since last update (wednesday) it fixed another prob. I can’t login since wednesday 2 hours after the update.
Well i had some nice emails with Pierre-Luc. Some standard email (think i got them all twice), some questions that got answered if anyone read the issue mail.
So please tell me. Is there some way to login? Maybe some secret way?
And when i ask to check your connection, i get the answer check your firewall settings.
Please read this, and please explain me. SL runs for 6 or 7 days without any problems. Fast, no tp-probs, no lost items, everything was fine. The update started, i logged in, ok. Everything fine. 2 hours later i got kicked. ok that can happen. I cleared cache (yes now i know how, u can wake me in the middle of the night and i can explain it) i also cleared the windows cache (the same) i de-installed it, re-installed it. And the result is: Server may be down. I promise i made no changes in computer hardware, software, firewall settings or my clothes i was wearing. And when i contact someone from support i get the holy answer, check your firewall. WHY??? It worked 5 minutes before without probs. Ok i’m a gentle guy (sometimes) i checked my firewall. I also contacted my ISP. He checked your website: Not available. I checked your website: Not available. OK maybe a DNS prob, so my ISP routed my an other way. Same poor result. No website, no SL-login. I send WinMTR-protocoll, i send it when i could connect to show you the trace route, and i send the one that tells me that the host is unreachable, another trace routing software protocoll, dxdiag, a screenshot of my firewall settings, and i got the question: where are you physically located. Well here, behind my screen in the middle of Germany. Some german users are online, most are not. When i read your blogs i see that it is not just me. But no word in any blog.
So please, maybe you are pitty and give me an answer.
Yes firewall settings are ok. yes all drivers are up to date, yes i re-installed the software 100 times or more, yes i cleared the chach (sl and windows) yes i did run Winmtr, yes i checked my software firewall (norton internet security) yes i tried with this firewall diabled. now i think i will try to do some real nasty thing: change my clothes. Let’s hold hands that this will work.
And if that will not help, then please tell me why i can’t reach http://www.secondlife.com but can reach http://blog.secondlife.com
Is that all a fault of my firewall??? I can’t believe it.
March 8th, 2007 at 5:17 PM
@Freemind Carbenell:
blog.secondlife.com is actually living on WordPress.com’s servers. http://www.secondlife.com is on the same chunk of the ‘net that the grid is on. If you can’t access http://www.secondlife.com, it’s no surprise that you can’t access Second Life. It sounds like you’ll need to continue to work with your ISP, especially if they claim they can’t access http://www.secondlife.com!
March 8th, 2007 at 5:21 PM
Josh - will we still be able to use the FL viewers we’ve already been testing in the main grid. I cannot use the production viewer because of the stutter that I get from it every minute or so lasting between .5-2 seconds approx.
March 8th, 2007 at 5:26 PM
I just wanted to say GREAT JOB!!! to the team.
And to those of you who are whining, geeee, these folks are only building an entire world from scratch. I’m sure they are sorry they can’t get all these fixes to you sooner, but it will take more than 7 days. After all they are only human. Cut them some slack.
I’ve never seen any multiplayer game that responded as quickly as they do. The problems seem to be getting fixed and I’ll tell you posts that just whine and complain and insult the dev team bring everyone down.
If you can’t post something helpful, maybe you shouldn’t post at all?
March 8th, 2007 at 5:28 PM
wow. That was a long post. Unfortunately, some people feel that on the blog is the only place lindens listen. And will post anything in desperate hopes of an answer.
I think a topinc on the forums could have answered that question though.
On topic.
I really love the beta flew around a bit, and unfortunately, I did see one instance of the disembodies attachment bug. =\ . do we have an eta on it coming to the main grid.
And on another note, can i have a copy of your bear, joshua? I seem to PS.be missing yours
Warkirby magojiro inworld too.
/me looks forward to the update
Is it sleepytime over in america? The blog is so quiet. Aren’t we usually at 200 indignant screaming posts by now?
I wonder if this single thread of comments is really the best way to handle blog commenting. It seems fine at first, but starts to show it’s limitations when you have hundreds of mostly off topic posts. It’s nice to see you doing the rounds and writing replies, josh

Hi Joshua, thanks for the answer
hope u understand that i now feel a bit like a ping pong ball.
ISP says everything is fine, prob is located at Linden, Linden says everything is fine, prob is located at your ISP.
let’s meet in the middle and blame the whales.
March 8th, 2007 at 6:14 PM
Joshua thank you for taking the lead and dealing with these bugs! GOOD WORK
March 8th, 2007 at 6:16 PM
Second Life 1.13.3 (58877) (render pipeline) is running just obscenely fast, even with draw distance on 512. Goodness me, you folks have done a superb job with this!
March 8th, 2007 at 6:20 PM
Freemind. The problem is almost definately your SP> Especially if other people in geermany can’t connect too. They must have fucked something up.
Keep in touch with your other german friends, and if this problem persists for a week or more, i suggest switching to a new ISP.
Warkirby
March 8th, 2007 at 6:30 PM
@21, This really doesnt sound like a SL problem.
Using any traceroute program, if you trace the route to http://www.secondlife.com where does it fail?
The point at which is fails is probably the cause of your problem.
If you open a command window and type nslookup http://www.secondlife.com do you get a result? (No, then there is a DNS problem, most likely your ISP, because DNS works for others)
March 8th, 2007 at 7:19 PM
I know it’s sort of off topic, but regarding Freemind Carbenell’s issue:
Isn’t it possible, that it’s ~not~ his ISP, after all the maintenance was to the ~network~, was it not?
Perhaps something in the changes you made to the network is somehow incompatible with the ISP’s in Germany, maybe something so simple as a default setting of some kind.
If he suddenly had a problem right after you made network changes, and many other Germans have the same problem, maybe there really is a Linden Labs issue here.
Somebody should really look at this from a broader perspective.
P.S. I live in the USA and can connect just fine.
Thanks!

Ok, I’m not seeing a fix for the massive runaway memory leak and subsequent frame rate freezes that have plauged the last several FL clients?
That is a show stopper. I hope you have got that one licked. It’s so repeatable on the main grid and affects so many people I’m surprised it’s not been stomped out by now…
March 8th, 2007 at 11:08 PM
Does this viewer have voice in it for us to test yet? When will that be available for testing on the beta grid? I hope we shall test it first….
March 8th, 2007 at 11:19 PM
Re: * Fixed jerky/stuttering physics based movement for hover vehicles
WOooooOOOT! Just tested it… “Smooth sailing” once again! =)
March 8th, 2007 at 11:29 PM
All of these fixes sound great but when is the REAL issue going to be addressed, MEGA lag and packet loss?
I’ve given up trying to run events at my ice skate park because LAG has become so bad this week, after this networking “fix”, people can no longer skate there. I’m sure people will be happy their caps lock key is working right as they lag through a wall and 20 feet underground. I know I’m so happy watching this park I created turn into a vacant lot. When are they going to realize this is what most people are tired of?
They promised to limit logins when problems arose yet hundreds if not thousands of people lost items this week and are being lagged to death due to overloaded servers and nothing was done to protect them. I love Sl when it runs even half way decent but I’m not sure how much more I can be patient waiting for them to address the performance issues, right now it’s unusable unless ur idea of SL fun is zombie dance in a club using a dance loop and chat.
March 9th, 2007 at 12:00 AM
I am mystified. I ran WinMtr tonight after getting the standard reply from LL that major packet loss and lag was my problem. Guess what? It showed that the problems start in SF, move on to Seattle, THEN get to my connections. So how are these problems mine?
Checking the knowledge base hasn’t given me answers. Anyone out there who can demystify my dilemma? Will the new viewer solve these long-standing problems?
Apologies in advance
Many thanks!
March 9th, 2007 at 12:19 AM
I just tested some of the new lsl commands on aditi. WOW! Finally we can do texture change and prim param changes with a SINGLE script in the root prim! Thank you!
March 9th, 2007 at 1:34 AM
Sorry to say this, but maybe it’s Freemind’s ISP. I’m in Israel, and if i can connect happily (but with 300msec ping times due to location O.o well, nothing can be done, except moving to the US lol.) Then it MUST be the German ISP. Have a friend nearby try and enter http://www.SecondLife.com and then see if he can enter, If he can’t ask another, and so on for about 3. 3 is enough for your ISP to know that’s a problem at their servers :).
-Smiley out.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:35 AM
(I guess my comment with the new “name” is awaiting moderation since it’s a new “name” O.o Oh well, it’s me, no one else is using my 1st and 2nd Second Life names.)
March 9th, 2007 at 1:43 AM
Is it known already when the main grid will go down on wednesday 14th? I have a live presentation for my company that day and would like to know if I need to move it to the beta grid or to another day or whatever.
GMT times would be nice
March 9th, 2007 at 2:16 AM
whoa whoa… wait a minute
“Changes: * Moving your avatar no longer deselects objects in build mode automatically”
That’s not a new change… that’s a BUG! Same bug from First Look viewer, long before this beta version came out!
Personally… I don’t like that new change, I do use movement key to cancel the selection all the time during my building. Why?
March 9th, 2007 at 3:34 AM
Vincent: why don’t you use CTRL+E to deselect?
March 9th, 2007 at 3:46 AM
OK after getting excited with llSetLinkTexture and llSetLinkPrimitiveParams, I realised there is a 0.2 second delay which makes them really slow in FOR loops if I have to set shiny on 50 of my 100 prim object
llSetLinkColor and llSetLinkAlpha don’t have a delay penalty so why this inconsistency? Can you please reconsider this delay?
March 9th, 2007 at 3:55 AM
Any timeline on when you will stop newbie, 1 day old accounts, which don’t have payment info on file from crashing sims with particle objects?
Of course not, protecting the people who pay for your service isn’t a priority is it …
Whitlow sim has just been hard crashed by a bunch of smacktards who’ve dropped particle objects all over that sim and about 4 which surround it.
The people who did it were all new ALT accounts, are linked to the “Banana Phone Groups” group, whose citizens go back as far as 2003, and 2004 and yet list in their profiles that there skills are “Messing up public areas with freebie items o_O” ….
What the hell is going on! Honestly, I am losing so much faith in the Lindens and Second Life.
You don’t seem to care at all. It would be so easy to restrict any accounts without “payment on file” from having particle objects, or having the ability to use particle commands in LSL.
Why the hell should people pay hundreds of dollars in fees to Linden Labs, when some idiot with a freebie can destroy their work in minutes?
It’s not good enough Linden Labs. You provide a service which people pay for, and with that comes the responsibility to protect those who buy the service, and thereby pay your wages.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:49 AM
@32
I like being able to move around while keeping my current selection. And it certainly isn’t a bug. Just because somebody changes something intentionally that you don’t like doesn’t make it a bug. Bugs are unintentional.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:54 AM
OMG how can u lindens waste time on “improvements” and posting on your blogs and interviewing ppl on linden radio when the missing water bug makes sl TOTALLY UNPLAYABLE!!! and i wish ppl would stop saying its fixed on the first look when its NOT, its broken EVERY TIME i look, even the first time!!!! and also i dont know why ppl keep saying to clear my cash when i have missing inventory, if i clear my cash i wont be able 2 buy replacements for my missing inventory, duh!!!!! and theres NO E ON THE END OF CASH!!!!!
March 9th, 2007 at 5:05 AM
@Vincent
I agree, i always use the movement keys, but it’s not a bug. I suggest LL to make an option in Preferences to switch it on/off.
@Freemind
Check with 3 friends and see wether they can access Second Life. Try another friend that is on another ISP too. If your 3 friends can’t but the “extra” friend can enter http://www.SecondLife.com, it’s definately an ISP issue. Contact your ISP again and attempt to resolve the issue with them. If the problem persists, i suggest re-connecting the modem (or router and modem if you have a router) to the electricity plug, and when it is connected, disconnect the phone plug, re-connect it, and then re-connect the modem again from the electricity plug. This can cause “confusion” to some DSL modem types and cause them to auto configure again. It works this way with my modem when i’m having issues :).
March 9th, 2007 at 5:08 AM
@Funk
There shouldn’t be a delay if it doesn’t say so. Report this as a bug using the “Bug Report…” in-world feature. (If you don’t already know, but i think you do, it’s on the bottom space in the “Tools” menu.) This is good for me too as my Smiley Comm needs these changes while active.
March 9th, 2007 at 5:19 AM
@32: Personally, I’ve always found it incredibly annoying that I had to reselect the item I was editing after any slight movement. I’ve always assumed that the fact the system deselects it despite the fact that I’ve not selected anything else nor closed the editing window was a bug — why on earth would walking a few steps towards the tail of my plane indicate I didn’t want to continue editing the rudder? It just doesn’t make any sense. If I wanted to edit something else, I’d have clicked on something else. If I didn’t want to edit anything at all, I’d have closed the edit window. If I’ve done neither of these things, there’s no reason it shouldn’t continue to let me edit what I was editing! Having it just blank out is just silly. I’m overjoyed to hear they’ve finally fixed this nasty bug that makes working on any build larger than trivial a pain.
March 9th, 2007 at 6:08 AM
@ People who lost Inventory:
I once had ‘lost’ inventory items too. That was after I renamed a folder from “some folder name” to “someone’s folder name” - watch the ‘ character in the new name. Directly after the renaming the contents of the folder was still there, that is, to the left of the folder name in my inventory there was the open/close arrow, which worked normally and when opening the folder the contents was there. Then I loged off. After I loged in again, the folder with the new name containing the ‘ character was still there, but without the open/close arrow, so i couldn’t open the folder, and that normally shows that there isn’t anything in that folder. So I, of course, thought I lost these items. I say ‘thought’ because in fact I didn’t lose them.
The solution was to rename that folder from “someone’s folder name”, see the ‘ character in the folder’s name, to “someones folder name”, eliminating the ‘ character and after I did that the items previously contained in that folder showed up again, that is, i got back the open/close arrow to the left of the folder and when I opened that folder, the items were shown just as if nothing had happened.
After that experience I met someone in world who said he had lost items too. I told him about my experience and he renamed one of his folders in the same way as I did with my folder, eliminating some character which wan’t a letter or number and he ‘got back’ his items too.
I tried to reproduce that bug by renaming my folder again to “someone’s folder name”, putting in the ‘ character again, but even after several log offs and log ins the folder, whith the name containing the ‘ character, didn’t ‘lose’ the items, so unfortunately this bug isn’t really reproducable, which makes it extremely hard to track down.
To make a long story short, if you lose items, which were/are in a folder, which has a name with characters other than letters and numbers, just try to rename that folder so it’s name has only letters and numbers and log off and log in again.
@ Freeman:
I’m from Germany and I use 1&1 as ISP, who use the T-com network. I never ever had, despite the times when Linden said that there are problems, and right now do not have any problems logging in to SL or reaching the SL website. This definitely is NO advertising the mentioned companies, but just for information, so if you are using another ISP you can tell your ISP that with 1&1 as ISP there are no problems reaching SL.
March 9th, 2007 at 6:43 AM
@Smiley. The delay is shown on th lsl wiki:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetLinkTexture
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetLinkPrimitiveParams
LL please reconsider removing the 0.2 second delay. These functions can help us stop using a script in each child prim (also easing up the script resources used by IDLE scripts on a sim), but right now the delay makes them too slow to use unless we are doing LINK_SET or the other constants (and how many times do you want to apply the exact same texture or prim params to every single prim in an object?)
March 9th, 2007 at 7:16 AM
@Joshua
The inventory folder issue has been fixed in Beta viewers since 1.13.4.1 (Feb 21st). Please try out the Beta and verify that the issue is resolved.
Not with all the other problems that have been reported, just make it a part of the main viewer. Thanks.
March 9th, 2007 at 8:32 AM
@ Simley Barry
Thanks a lot. I checked with 6 friends, 2 use the same ISP, and the others use spearate ISP’s. ALL are unavailable to website or grid. But as Joshua wrote, it is not a Linden issue.
@ Kimo
Thanks for supporting.
Btw. the SL-support stopped answering my emails. Maybe coffee break sinye yesterday.
Yes it is off-topic, but all other ways are without respond off LL support
March 9th, 2007 at 8:49 AM
@Freemind
Don’t know if this helps in finding the problem, but I can connect fine from Germany using a T-Online connection (located near the Ruhrgebiet). No problems except for the lag that everybody else if fighting with.
March 9th, 2007 at 9:13 AM
Longer term information vs. blog / helpdesk congestion :
If LL would spend some time and webspace to create a list of bugs, problems, etc, coupled with a long-term bugfix and evolution schedule, it would :
1. Be nice because it’s always nice to see things coming,
2. help decongestionning the blog and helpdesk because people would see changes comming so they don’t have to ask when they will be fixed –> helpdesk and blog would become more useful.
Good idea ?
March 9th, 2007 at 9:26 AM
ummmmm i’m not really interested in this
What i would like is to know if the classifieds are working or not.
If not , Why not, sort out the old problems before you start new things
March 9th, 2007 at 9:57 AM
Re: network issues / packet loss -
I’m not the expert here (by any stretch of the imagination), but I’ll try and see if any of these reports correlate to anything on our end of the network. As always, remember that Second Life is far more network intensive than nearly any other application. We do have changes coming in pieces over the next few months which shift a lot of the traffic from UDP to TCP, which will change the whole dynamic of busy/noisy network traffic.
@Vincent Nacon:
As you can see from follow-up comments, many people (including LL) considered the deselect-on-move a bug. We’ll review all of the feedback though.
@Funk Schnook:
I’m checking with the developer over the differing delays on the llSetLink* functions. Although I don’t know for sure, I suspect that Alpha and Color are much “cheaper” in terms of server load than Texture and PrimitiveParams, hence the differing delays. Delays are typically implemented so that tight loops can’t bring the server or viewers to a grinding halt.
@Anna Eisbar:
As far as tracking bugs, we now have https://jira.secondlife.com - and we encourage users to report and vote on bugs there.
Providing a roadmap for bug fixes is always tricky. Many bugs look easy but turn out to be deep architectural issues. Others look difficult but could be fixed in a few minutes (plus hours of building/verifying) if someone knew where to look.
Even for experienced users its often difficult to find a bug report for a problem that someone is experiencing. Unless you’ve heard the catch phrase (e.g. “prim drift”) you might not know it’s an issue you’re looking for. So more ad-hoc communication is often still necessary.
But yes, it’s the direction we want to go!
@Gaybot Foxley:
The Beta of voice is still invitation-only at the moment - a special viewer is required to use it. Over time we’ll expand the program to all Beta grid users, and the next “First Look” (following the legacy of Focus and Rendering) will likely be voice-enabled.
@Farallon Greyskin:
We have smashed some memory leak bugs in the First Look viewers recently. If you’re still seeing them with the new viewer that will come out today, please report on the blog! (the FL post that’ll be made, not here)
@Gillian Waldman:
We will continue to post updated First Look: Render Pipeline Improvement viewers for until that becomes the “default” viewer for Second Life.

@Stick:
nah!! we can be bothered to let users know about that problem.

Apologies….*goes red* I decided to read the first bit of this blog and found the answer there
But i wont hold my breath

Regarding: I’m checking with the developer over the differing delays on the llSetLink* functions. Although I don’t know for sure, I suspect that Alpha and Color are much “cheaper” in terms of server load than Texture and PrimitiveParams, hence the differing delays. Delays are typically implemented so that tight loops can’t bring the server or viewers to a grinding halt.
It would be really cool if there was something like: llSetLinkListColor( color, [ link #, link #, Link # ], [ side, side #, side # ] ) alternative to the various llSetLink functions….

@Joshua
I dont see any mention of the long standing issue of *stale money* ..sure would be nice to see this taken care of in a timely manner, its been more weeks then we can count now.
March 9th, 2007 at 11:29 AM
Drats.
I was hoping to see an @Khan from Joshua.
Keep up the good work.

The Beta grid appears to be down at the moment:
(I hope that formats correctly; if not, my apologies.)
March 9th, 2007 at 12:26 PM
@Sparrowhawk McConnell:
Yes, we’re going to have downtime on the March 14th, probably 7am-12noon PST (15:00-20:00 GMT). This will be finalized and formally announced within a few hours.
@Johanna Hyacinth:
Oops, fixed now. Thanks for reporting!
@Khan Kimban:
I’m checking up on the animated textures issue you reported. No news yet.
@Soggy Batmanuel:
Bonus points for most unintentionally (?) humorous blog comment of the day.
@fdg Freund:
Thanks for the workaround report. This may help us identify and fix the issue!
March 9th, 2007 at 1:35 PM
Oh man this is so cool. Vehicles actually move smoothly again! VWR-86 is fixed! w00t!
Also, closed inventory folders stay closed! The client’s starting to feel like we’re getting back to 2006 levels of usability, before things started breaking right and left.
Still ended up with all my attachments positioned on my butt after one teleport, though, so I know that one’s still out there.
Nice work overall. Looking forward to this update.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:38 PM
In my browsing of the internet today I came across a website with some interesting freeware, the most important of which is this patcher which would probably help make SL client updates smaller. Might be worth looking into, eh Lindens?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:03 PM
Hi, it is me again.
i made 3 phone calls to the Linden Support (Germany - States are real long distance calls i think) NO RESPONSE.
Emails didn’t get answered I tried the regular Software, the first look software, the Beta Software. i build my computer new (yes i did really) i contacted my ISP several times.
This is no poor service, this is NO service at all.
Well, why do i post that here? Where should i post it, http://www.secondlife is not available for me, and (guess 40-50) other from Germany, Emails i send to support@secondlife.com run in the great wide nothing.
I’m not sure if any german company will stay long alife offering such a non existing service.
Telling there are no probs from my side give me the answer check if there are any probs at your side. Please i’m older than 4 years old. My ISP send me an email he wrote to you, maybe 8 hours ago. NO response. In this mail he asked about changes that might be done to allow some stupid german to login.
I really try to be polite and fair. I know that this whole secondlife is a bit more difficult than 2 working computers in a network, but i think it is only fair to respond to support mails, to check if not a little button isn’t checked. All i got is check your side. Isn’t it is a good question about possible Linden mistakes, that this issue started after the update? When SL runs that week before stable fast and everything fine. Joshua, CieJ, Pierre-Luc, Phillip whoever don’t ignore the users, don’t think when it works for some it might work for all. You did the changes, not me. Before it runs now it does not. What will that tell me? Isn’t it is the right time for you to ask yourself some questions, check some connections. I promise to stop posting off topic in blogs when i get an working respond from your support, but as long as there is no response or standard email-responses (really i have this mails 3-4 times, all your standard answers, and i don’t want one more) i have to post to show that the grid and all isn’t working fine. And Joshua, in your last post u answered some questions of users, well in germany (not the perfect gentle people, i know) but there they would send a respond like we will contact you by email. and they do that, really.

@52 noch ne Wohnung frei?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:21 PM
Freemind: You honestly think that Linden Lab has a “fix routing problem between German ISP and California” button? Chances are they are unable to reach the ISP’s page as well. Do you blame your ISP for this? If you had planned to visit a friend but could not get there because of a pile-up on the Autobahn, would you lay the blame on your friend? Try educating yourself on the basic workings of the Internet before throwing darts at Linden Lab. Even though your ISP changed the route, they can only change so much. The routing problem is likely upstream at a hop that BOTH routes go through - nothing Linden Lab OR your ISP can do. Thankfully, problems like this are usually rectified quickly. Have you done traceroutes to see where the problem is?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:55 PM
I’m reading this blog cause im standing in game unable to TP anywhere. Friday, 35000+ online…i wont get into the whole selling more tickets then you have seats bit. You are well aware and it’s going to bite you hard.
* Fixed jerky/stuttering physics based movement for hover vehicles….this is good! finally my boats will work again after months of garbage, well, assuming you can TP to the #)$@#$ water. Also assuming you can REZ the #@(*$& boat and the )(#$ water will rendor. Thanks for the fix!
One other outstanding bug is Really starting to wear thin. I have a group of over 1200 people who would really like to recieve Group Notices of up coming racing events that I host. I have not been able to send a notice to them SINCE LAST YEAR. The group is the SL Motorcycle Racing Association. This bug has not been acknowledged as far as i know. I have Bug Reported it multiple times. Please feel free to use the group for tests.
thanks!
…also, if you have time between the constant life support issues you could maybe look into why vehicles sink into the ground consitanly now every few seconds. Did you throttle physics even more?
March 9th, 2007 at 3:14 PM
@ chronik
Thanks for this warm words. yes i did, yes my ISP did. And no i do not honestly think that there is such button. Maybe u can explain why SL works fine til wednesday before the update and not working from wednesday after the update, and still not working.
I don’t blame anybody, i just try to find out where the issue is located. My ISP spend 2 hours at the phone trying to do every possible way to make me reach the side. then he said that this is not in his influence and that he will contact LL, maybe together they can find and fix the prob. 6 hours later my ISP called me at the phone, tellig me, that there is NO response from LL. So what will you do, when u contact LL-support get this standard answers and links that u can’t reach. i send all necessary and more documents and files to LL and to my ISP, the only reaction was from my ISP.
Again i will not blame anybody, all i want is get the status i had before that update happened, able to login and have some nice hours, don’t think that this is too much i want
March 9th, 2007 at 3:19 PM
Freemind: It seems much more likely that the problem is a setting at your ISP than at LL. It’s possible that they’re blocking all traffic from a certain node…It’s also possible that the nodes that they’re routing through are blocking it. Sending e-mail to a domain that you cannot reach is not going to help. This wasn’t related to the recent update. 2 things you said make me certain of this, 1. You stated that you ISP couldn’t reach the SL website..if they cannot even hit the html page, how are they going to hit the grid. 2. You said that you were on SL for two hours AFTER the update before you got booted. When you ISP can reach SL, you wll be able to.
As far as the network issues, I’m thrilled to hear about the conversion from UDP to tcp/ip…this explains a whole lot. As I understand it, UDP sends every packet to every machine, where tcp/ip routes the packets only to the machines that require them. As the server farm scales up, the UDP ‘noise’ must be enormous. In one of my RL positions I support a 400 user novell LAN. Even on something that small, the change to exclusively tcp was an incredible speed booster.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Seems to work so far. Texturing objects is much better, though when you cancel texturing several prims at once, residual textures get left over.

@les:
If it’s any insight, I have been active in many notice eending groups, and also sent plenty. Group notices have never failed for me at all in the past few months.
I know a lot of other people are getting notices just fine too. It’s clear something is wrong. I suggest creating a brand new group and inviting a few people, then see if you can get notices working in that. Also make sure you have the most recent FL viewer. I’m not sure how far back in obsolete viewers you’re allowed to use, but it’s best to remove it and get the newest one anyways.

To Freemind Carbenell Sometimes this helps in Microsoft IE 7 open tools inside click security check trusted sites and then the sites button type in the blank https://secondlife.com click add button then close IE reboot your computer. Might help some say? Other browsers have some of the same options. it’s worth a try.Online Now: 28,345

@ Freemind Carbenell:
It’s possible that some of the network changes they’ve made haven’t propigated through to your ISP’s DNS servers (which is no one’s fault, by the way- sometimes the DNS system is just dumb).
I’d suggest setting your computer to use OpenDNS and see if that helps. Just go to http://www.opendns.com/start/ and follow the instructions.
I’ve been using OpenDNS for a while now, and I’ve found it to be much faster and more reliable than the DNS provided by my ISP. =)
Take care!

For some strange reason, each beta client i have downloaded since Feb logs me into main grid. O.o
Second Life 1.13.4 (7) Mar 9 2007 11:25:22
You are at 244871.7, 276923.1, 22.8 in Nevi located at sim2822.agni.lindenlab.com (64.129.43.64:13003)
March 10th, 2007 at 7:33 PM
I must be doing something wrong… I’ve downloaded and run the beta site viewer and it keeps telling me my userID and password are wrong… I’ve checked the caps lock and it was as it should be OFF… I even ran the other original view/grid and the 1st look viewer with the same userID/password… both of these work fine for the mainstream grid… is there another special userID/pass I should be using on the beta grid… what is wrong?
March 11th, 2007 at 9:44 PM
@GaryQ Heron:
How recent is your account? The Beta Test Grid has a copy of the main database that is recent but not completely up-to-date so it may not have your account in it. According to http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php it is a copy from Feb 19th, so if your account is more recent than that you won’t be able to access the Beta Test Grid until we update it - sorry!

@Sly Wiles:
UDP vs. TCP is more subtle than that… Wikipedia probably has a nice explanation, but basically UDP is like sending a bunch of postcards versus TCP being a two-way teletype. UDP is fire-and-forget and there are no delivery guarantees, TCP guarantees delivery (inasmuch as is possible on a network) but requires handshake overhead. UDP is good for some things, TCP for others.
March 12th, 2007 at 10:17 PM
Does the beta client read it’s settings from the first look client files? Why is my beta client logging into main grid? Where can I check the hostname each client is using to log into SL? I see only a single settings.xml file in this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\MeMyselfAndI\Application Data\SecondLife\mystical_cookie
March 12th, 2007 at 10:21 PM
Ahh. I found the location of client specific settings at:
C:\Documents and Settings\MeMyselfAndI\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings
settings.xml
settings_beta.xml
settings_firstlook.xml
But there is no mention of a hostname or grid name. How can I check where the client is set to log into? Or must we specify the login and user servers/urls via the command line options now?
March 13th, 2007 at 8:35 AM
@Mystical Cookie:
The shortcut to the application controls what grid the viewer logs into. Without any arguments, the viewer will connect to the main grid.
Are you bypassing the shortcut?
If you launch it directly you can specify the grid as follows:
SecondLife.exe –aditi

The inventory folder issue has been fixed in Beta viewers since 1.13.4.1 (Feb 21st). Please try out the Beta and verify that the issue is resolved.
Oh really, I’m on 1.13.4.7 right now. Beyond being a naked woman noob style, the inventory folders still pop open. GRRRRRR can’t you fix anything?
