Land Store Downtime Next Monday: Upgrade!
Thursday, March 1st, 2007 at 8:00 PM by: Jeff LindenThe Land Store will be coming down next Monday in order for us to attempt an upgrade. Several improvements are planned:
- We will expand the reservable area by 100 units on the west, north.
- We will now display the X, Y coordinate where you are clicking, for convenience.
- Reservations will now start checking for diagonal corners.
In addition, please note that we are now in the process of redesigning the entire “Land Store” concept. I understand that the current incarnation is somewhat difficult to use, and the Lindens involved with the Land Store have been very vocal about resident feedback.
We expect to have the Land Store down for no more than 3 hours, starting at 11am Pacific.
edit: Sorry folks! I corrected my third point because it was saying the exact opposite what I meant. Currently, you can pick a space if the four spaces directly next to it are empty/yours. After the upgrade, you can pick a space only if all eight spaces next to it (including the diagonal corners) are empty/yours.
Also, another correction is the expansion space: we will be expanding 100 units north, and 300 units west. We will not be expanding south.
Thank you!

WOW what gives? Woth the land store these days

“Reservations no longer check for diagonal corners.”
Does this mean someone can join onto the corner of my sim without asking?
March 1st, 2007 at 8:12 PM
If you don’t check for diagonals, doesn’t that mean that someone can block 2 sides of an existing island by just reserving a corner or all 4 sides by reserving 2 diagonals?
March 1st, 2007 at 8:13 PM
It prolly means someone can join to the corner of your sim if you didn’t reserve it… but if there are no side sims, a corner-to-corner sim is not visible in-world.

Why do the words “Attempt an upgrade” not inspire much confidence ? Hmmmm
March 1st, 2007 at 9:39 PM
PLEASE say that people can’t attach to a corner of your sim. That would be freaking TERRIBLE!
You guys let the grid get WAY too crowded. It should have been expanded like 4-5 months ago. Why didn;t you? It costs NOTHING to expand the reservable space and give people expandable breathing room. This better not be an attempt to extort money from sim owners by forcing them to continuously reserve land around tthe immediate vicinity of their sims
Please clarify this and tell us that this is a wrong assumption.

I’d be more excited about land if I hadn’t ordered L over the weekend, been charged for it, and STILL not recieved it yet. But four business days later, I did get a one inaccurate and unhelpful reply from my repeated posts asking why my Linden order hadn’t been credited to my L account even though my US account was charged for the transaction… the reply said they had my payment of US money, then asked which of my lands I was trying to pay tier for. *disgusted*
I only own Island properties, which I pay tier to the Island owner, so this reply to my inquiries about a Linden Dollar order, doesn’t feel me with confidence about their ability to take care any problems with land, or anything else for that matter.
That being the case I don’t see any incentive to buy land from them. An island owner I have much better chance at talking with in person if anything goes wrong, and I won’t have to spend a half hour on the phone for an unhelpful help line, to be finally shunted to voice mail and still have no resolution to my unfilled L order, despite their charging me for it and everything.

Least LL are being honest for once hehe. Think everyone knows by now any new features wont work and will cause yet more bugs

Groovy.

I hope that post number 6 is way off in left field.Wake up one morning from a nice ocean front sim edge to being boxed in by the new lots that appeared over night in front of you. Say it isnt so.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:45 AM
Sounds to me like post #6 is probably bang on the mark!

Just to clarify the meaning of Jeff’s third point..
Currently land store allows diagonal placements with no restrictions (often referred to as kittycornering). During the Monday update to Land Store we will stop this being possible; you will not be able to place an island in any of the 8 positions around someone elses island without their consent.
This has the added advantage that a reservation will serve to protect all 8 spaces around it, not just N, E, S and W as it does now.
March 2nd, 2007 at 5:52 AM
I was gonna say, we can ALREADY pick diagonal spots. I’m extremely pleased to hear we will no longer be able to do that.
March 2nd, 2007 at 6:08 AM
i think i have to agree with number 7, seeing as how every time theres an update LL attempts to fix bugs but then there just ends up being more and if they fix some there still ends up being plenty of different ones added. frustrating.

Thanks for the clarification, Jack. We think about buying an island soon, and this makes it much more attractive.
March 2nd, 2007 at 6:24 AM
Thats great to hear about protecting peoples SIMs by not placing others around them. Thanks for clarifying that point, it wasn’t all that clear to begin with.
/me apologises and goes to eat humble pie

Ok that is all good and fine but I do have a question.. we purchased an island in October.. received it in November and just in this last month something called VulcanSLU has popped up exactly one grid space away from ours to the west.. so basically theres no way I could expand in that direction now because of this placement.. Im wondering if I did get a second sim would I be charged to move my first island on the grid because of this or am I just stuck to expanding in other directions? just seems that the grid is too small considering the 30% increase of sims that were made back in October and continue to increase since. I know this is the forum and I doubt I will see a responce to this but ya know.. its a concern.

While you’re in there, any chance you can make the land store (and slurl and anything else that uses the map) work with IE7??

Agree with Farallon Greyskin. Charge for this, charge for that, charge for everything single thing they possibly can. Take away every single perk there ever was. The cost of SL just left my “acceptable” price range.

Good luck Jeff - no shrek ears
March 2nd, 2007 at 8:25 AM
For the record I’m all for things not working with IE.
In a way message number 6 wasn’t off the mark it was just that instead of a problem to be faced in the future it’s a current problem to be eliminated.
3 hours. And here I was going to make a crack about “Oh but I was gona buy land Monday” that being total BS. I never do anything on Mondays.
Cross fingers on a much needed upgrade.
March 2nd, 2007 at 8:55 AM
Yay! Whew!
Actually that’s great news and I am actually very surprised that it was allowed before.
THankyouverymuch!

corner attachments are already happening without our permission. LL put Bond Street off one corner of Salamis without my permission and directly in the path of my continents expansion. This is, IMHO, squatting at the least. If LL fails to rectify this situation I will barricade this sim in and otherwise embargo them from accessing my continent. This sort of opportunism shouldn’t be tolerated.

How many times have you said this now? 100? 200?
March 2nd, 2007 at 9:41 AM
This is very positive! ;O)- Kudos Lindens!!
March 2nd, 2007 at 9:43 AM
Finally some improvements! Good thing NONE (of the above: cornering without no perms, too crowded, etc) of these things happened haha
(on the Teen Grid). Just too bad the Teen Grid is only 80-90 regions
We need more PIs and Mainland Regions, the Teen Grid is beginning to even head back because it’s losing track of the regions on the Main Grid.
(P.S.: Any Linden reading this: Why YES, i did see the 7-8 bridge regions connecting the snow regions and mountains, but it’s not enough
)
March 2nd, 2007 at 9:44 AM
(Sorry for whining all about it, but someone has to unless we want to be even further than the Main Grid.)
March 2nd, 2007 at 10:32 AM
Great news! I’d be quite upset if my corner sim lot with ocean view was “invaded” by some scheming new land baron extorting money from us citizens yet again.
March 2nd, 2007 at 10:32 AM
sorry fior off topic but just a note to let lindens know the saturated network symptoms are back. endless packet loss etc. cant log in, etc. thought you guys found a different colo service provider. looks like you need to look again lol.

I just dealt with someone battling me in two separate reserve auctions (which I lost fighting down to the last second of bidding) to claim reservation rights on the corners of my one-island sim. It was a huge pain in the butt. The Linden Concierge group couldn’t confirm if sims placed in these spots would be accessible or visible to and from my island.
I filed an “encirclement ring issue” with the concierge. More or less, it wouldn’t stick because it couldn’t be proven it was harrassment but rather someone following the rules.
When I tried to contact the opposing bidder, he said it was his right to do so since he did everything correctly at the Land Store and he was planning to expand around my sim because he “had plans” of some sort.
Completely fed up, I bid on five reserves far away from him and any other land baron wannabes so I wouldn’t have to put up with potential strip clubs and/or casinos on any of the corners. I don’t know if that was his “plan” but I wasn’t going to risk it. As a result, I’m waiting to hear back from the Concierge about moving my sim there (fortunately, at no moving charge by them because of the hassles I went through - thank you Harmony).
I spent $150 on reserve spots and won some peace of mind. Yay me, right?
However, today I see this blog post.
grrrr…

Ok, now can we get an update on the First Land project that’s suppose to make it more available?
March 2nd, 2007 at 2:04 PM
“Reservations will now start checking for diagonal corners.”
I hope this does not mean that “kittycornered” sims will now or ever become visible from the diagonal sim.
March 3rd, 2007 at 4:29 AM
Hopefully this will also clean up present reservations and inaccurate labeling of spots as Reserved when Islands exist and reflect change of ownership.
