Locke Traveller: Translator requested: Whatever language DJ is speaking
That said, welcome aboard. New Lindens are always appreciated - especially in the linguistics field. For me, I’ll have to make do with a Babbler.
xLocke: Traducteur demandé : Quelque langue DJ parle
Cela dit, accueillent à bord. Nouveau Lindens sont toujours appréciés - particulièrement dans le domaine de linguistique. Pour moi, je devrai me contenter d’un bavard.
January 27th, 2007 at 6:26 PM
I’ve been using Max Case’s Babbler and de-Babbler. He has it connected to the Google translation machine and it works very well. But it is great to have bi and tri-linguists.

Congrats! I speak English, French, Spanish, Russian and some Chinese. Seriously. Would I be able to help?
Thank you,

January 27th, 2007 at 8:14 PM
Welcome! I’d also highly recommend picking up a copy of Max Case’s wonderful (and free) Babbler HUD. It allows you to pick your native language, and what language to translate to. Then if you run into someone speaking a foreign language you don’t speak, you can give them a copy, AND explain to them how to attach it… then have a conversation. Tres bien! C’est bon!
January 27th, 2007 at 8:32 PM
Welcome aboard, n00bs.
I hope one or more of you speaks whatever language the engineers speak, because so far they don’t seem to be able to understand what anyone is saying.

@Calranthe Charlton:
100% ACK. Running a Core2Duo 6600 with GT8800 here on an 6 MBit Downlink, same Problems.
One Symptom shows it:
Teleporting from location a to location b is impossible, teleporting from c to b is fine - seems there is a big problem with the internal network routing between different locations of Linden Labs or within the the data switching in the data storage devices itself. Loosing parts of the Avatar while telepoting points to the same problem.
It’s a fact that problems accumulate when a limiz of roundabout 22000 Users are online - another fact pointing do this problem.
To declare technical problems to the fault of stupid users sounds not very intelligent to me, sorry. To get rid of complaining users by closing the forums is not the right way, too.
Welcome, new Lindens…

i.e. English Deutsch le français il bel´italiano si un pic de româneste
Try me for related languages just in case.
Just that I am not sure to have much time left for personal activities after the rush of the unilingual residents…

” and the rest of the team who are additionally skilled in speaking English, American, Australian and Canadian to mention just a few”
Didnt know there was a difference between American and English, but hey welcome to the gang!
January 28th, 2007 at 5:29 AM
To respond to those complaining about the forums going away, and insinuating that they were taken down to stop the bitchfest you seem to want have, I think they’ve long since explained that they were taken down to direct technical issues into the correct channels (e.g., bug reports for bugs, and help requests for things like a sim that’s apparently up, but not talking directly with the rest of the grid, like happened recently with one of the combat sandbox sims).
If you’re really interested in improving SL, inform the people who run it through the correct channels instead of whining on the blog where it doesn’t belong.
Das vidanya, Neo. I apologize for some of my fellow citizens being so utterly nekulturniy that they can’t stop thinking only of themselves and complaining long enough to provide a polite welcome.
Bienvenue à toi aussi, Madamoiselle Elle. LL has needed a French speaking liason for a while.
January 28th, 2007 at 5:58 AM
I’m thrilled to see Linden Labs is employing new Lindens with bilingual/trilingual capabilities. While I don’t speak any other language besides English its nice to see that people who don’t speak English are being taken into consideration. Well done! Neo and Elle welcome to our 3d party!
=[*.*]=
January 28th, 2007 at 6:20 AM
Sorry this is off topic but, since there is currently no place else to ask this….
Why was the Linden Answers forum moved to the archives section of the board and not the closed Land Management forum??
January 28th, 2007 at 6:24 AM
Will the new Lindens be hiding their online presence as most of the current linens do?
January 28th, 2007 at 6:26 AM
YES!!!!!!!!! you guys are RIGHT on top of it. Just the other day i was thinking oh boy how am i going to speak to half the visitors on this island, everyone knows thost translators only go so far. How do you say “right-click” in french?
thanks lindens for welcoming the world, Danke, Merci, Muchas Gracias
January 28th, 2007 at 6:34 AM
Welcome Neo & Elle!
And yes Tristan, Canadians do have their own language, eh?
January 28th, 2007 at 7:20 AM
@ Janie: Clique droit !
@ Jason: Well I’m writing this in the arvo - yes Aussie is different to British or American English lol
Bienvenue a tous. Welcome, at least you have a couple, though you need many many more with the amount of Europeans on - yes folks, those people on when the US is asleep are not campers, they live in the old world…
Now besides having one or two translators, you need to cater more for Europeans, like being able to take their debit cards, because most Europeans do not live on credit like the US and UK. Mastercard is virtually unknown in Europe, and everything else apart from Visa you won’t find. JCB? That’s an earth mover.
Remember more people live in the European Union than the USA, let alone the other non-EU countries.
Since sl was featured big time on French TV the other week, there are thousands of new French people here and very little to help them.
I’m British but live in France, but I can’t translate for all lol…
January 28th, 2007 at 7:45 AM
JCB in Japan is common..Visa,MC,AA…….are the also common.
January 28th, 2007 at 8:19 AM
Any portuguese-speaking Linden out there?
January 28th, 2007 at 8:52 AM
do you speak hungary?
January 28th, 2007 at 9:08 AM
This is a bit off topic, but i was drawn to this thread because of the subject line… It would be nice if i could take my GF’s shopping or swiming without having newbie guys come up and hit on her… I know its probably normal with newbies, but cant someone put out an etiquett (sp) manual that they all should read before joining? Maybe it could tell them there are places for what they are looking for. Beaches (unless stated otherwise), my home, and stores are not the place for it…. Im sure this has been said 1000 times and there is probably no solution, so go easy on me in the responses!!! Have a great SL day!

I am STILL having problems! I can’t connect to secondlife when it gets busy - it hangs on to connecting to region and the bar up top says not responding and the SL logo goes white and I have to end task… and and and
Why is it doing this, when will it be fixed? I’m fed up, I get to log on 3 times a day at the most, if I need to relog I put myself at risk of not being able to get on until the next day! That’s just what’s happened now. When it finally logs me on after 5 minutes of waiting.. all I see is black, orange and the sun!
Please do something LL

Yes, please! I have been having the same problem for nearly 2 weeks. As far as I know, all my arts, music and business projects have collapsed.
Live help was no help, though I thank those who attempted to help for their time. Will those of who are having this problem hear anything concrete from LL soon, in any language?

Seems like padding a resume to list diffrent dilects of English as diffrent languages.
However I remember when I was new someone was wondering around asking for someone who could speak spanish. I had suggested at the time she might look up the spanish word for spanish in the search to find other spanish speakers.
I then kinda went off to find that word (as I can speak it just not spell it) and then searched it up and found some nifty places. I don’t spell in spanish at all and have only a primitive understanding of the spoken language. Had she not had a grasp of the english language I would not have been able to help her at all.
We’re going to get more of that as SL expands. Eventually we’ll need an automated translator but not yet I think and maybe that should be a gadget made by a multi lingual Sl resedent not LL.
Still Linden Labs will benifit from multi lingual staff. Translating the website to various languages. Adding multi lingual support to the client and an LSL llGetLanguage for universal translator gadgets.
January 28th, 2007 at 11:27 AM
Instead of hiring people for special languages, how about you hire people that know how to fix this mess? with 27,000 + logged in, we can’t talk, walk, teleport etc. etc. Hell of a way to run a business.
January 28th, 2007 at 11:35 AM
“skilled in speaking English, American, Australian and Canadian” Would these not just be yet another examples of the English language?
Including EH!, couch, touque, hoser, etc if you are a Canadian or words such as y’all, you’se, axe (me a question), roof (sounding like rough) in you are american.
January 28th, 2007 at 11:38 AM

Someone attacked me with a new form of copybot called possebot. I tried to have it reported but the lindens ignored me completely.

LindenLab,

[...] In an announcement today on the appointment of two new multilingual Linden support staff, the claim was made that a number of other staff have Australian speaking abilities. If you’ve come across such a Linden we’d love to hear from you to test the claims by interviewing the said staff member [...]

This is good.
But what we need is lindens online and availabel in world outside office hours. This weekend I had an issue which really needed review from a linden. It was, thankfully, resolved amicably without intervention, but I can see identical situations happening, and there was no linden available in-world at the time, or for most of the following day.
Come on guys, where is Weekend Linden?

Hello, Im so glad we have people who speak diferent lenguages. and it would be really nice if that was also acepted in clubs and other places,
some poeple get offended by others speaking diferent lenguage.
even when I belive its a bit absurd and lack of culture.
having diferent lenguages, cultures. ways of living its to live free.

dear friends,
I am sure you have many scandinavian users, what about swedish
language ? is that too far from your capacity.

I speak portuguese.
In the world there are 170 million people speaking portuguese. It’s about 2.9% of world population.
Other 332 million speak spanish - 5.6%.
And there are 5.5% of people in world speaking english (as native language) - 322 million.

Gee… and here I speak neither Spanish NOR Australian.
¡Que lastima!
Hmm… If I dare try to log on with the 27,859 folks on right now, maybe I’ll do a search for language lessons (or for Spanish and Australian speaking sims in which I could learn by immersion). Then again… trying to learn a language in a text-only environment… My Spanish pronunciation is already pretty good, but my ear isn’t trained. And Australian… I’d need a lot of help on the pronunciation.
Blah, blah, blah…
Anyway, welcome anyway, Elle and Neo.
…Also thinking aboot learnin’ a little Canadian, eh… Blah, blah, blah… Man, I need a nap, but if I take one now, I’ll be up all night again.

With all this talk of the problems of the multi-national, multi-cultural community found in SL being brought up, I thought I’d mention this:
Project:Internationalisation (draft)
If you’re interested in the rather eccentric idea of using the SL Wiki as a hub for improving the in-world and overall internationalisation of Second Life, please leave your comments, questions and suggestions on the talk page. It’d also be helpful if you looked through it and corrected any political faux-pas that’ve snuck in during the sleep-deprived rush to get the list completed.

Another possibility is to have the translation page of dictionary.com running, use longer sentences to convey as much information as possible at one time, and get fast with Ctrl C and Ctrl V
http://dictionary.reference.com/translate/text.html

Instead of hiring people for special languages, how about you hire people that know how to fix this mess? with 27,000 + logged in, we can’t talk, walk, teleport etc. etc. Hell of a way to run a business.
buy a better computer, or quit. either way, I’ll be happy.

One of the nicest things about SL is the way it makes it possible for you to meet and make friends with people from all over the world. I think it would be good if residents were encouraged to add their first and other languages to their profiles. I spent a long time trying to explain something to a new resident - eventually discovering she was Hungarian and I was wasting my time with Dutch, not to mention my schoolgirl French and Italian!
—so a very warm welcome to linguistically skillful Lindens

Hi Guys…Welcome
As I mentioned in another post a lot of Newbies…whom I like to help just I was helped when I was ‘new’…seem to be under the impression that SL is the ‘Land of Milk and Honey’ with the prospect of being Millionaires after just a week on SL..I am sure this has been the media message they have received in their respective countries.
I have tried to explain to them (there are lots logging in to the Welcome Areas) about how things really are (re paying accounts..building and selling etc etc) and how its not that easy to make money on SL.
Hopefully we will see maybe one or two of you around the Welcome Areas to answer some of these questions??
Take Care and Good Luck
January 29th, 2007 at 8:27 AM
Even with ‘babbler’ attached I found it difficult to explain why you can’t get rich just by logging on with a free account and asking for a job…Mmm must have been one hell of a Media Message that…Unless of course you can..and I am completely wrong??
So come on you wonderfull multi linguists and set these guys straight

Hello SL people,
I can speak Dutch/Belgian/English/German and a little French.
Although I am only three weeks in SL (premium on day 2) I was guided by a beautifull person and now in return I have taken some one under my wings.
Maybe the Linden labs can wright a programme that forces peolpe to follow a course like in some games. A sort of tuderal that once you have a certain degree you can be set free in SL. (Or make a script that allows a free account to go in world under guidance with a premium. I am not computer programmer so correct me if this is impossible)
For example I teach my student to clean up after res or create. Even if it is in an self claening sandbox. This behavior ist explaned on the info island but people simple don’t do it or get it.
Its in SL like in RL “A Better World Starts with Youself.
Last but not least I want to thank all of you wonderfull people who read these blogges and answer all the questions over and over again.
Don’t you just love these people.
Love and peace and patience to you all.

Welcome, now how about some Native American language speaking liaisons when you get around to it. I have yet to find anyone (liasons or residence) in SL that can talk Lakhota with me properly. It would be refreshing to find that. Anyway, welcome liasons, I hope you have good SL journeys. Hope to see you around.
Aho!

Welcome to Neo and Elle!
I have been an SL Citizen since last July. I am American, and speak English. There is a lot about SL that I still do not know, but I am learning.
I have a Babbler, and I find it works great for me. Last week, and I still do not know how it happened, but many French people were tp’ing into my house! Thank God for the Babbler! I was able to communicate and help some with their requests. I even passed on a few clothes.
I would like to offer my assistance, with use of the Babbler, to help “Newcomers”, who hit the eject button as soon as they come to Help Island.
The translation by the Babbler is sometimes not correct, I am told, but many also speak enough English to get what they need.
My SL husband is French and is a great help.
I do not mind if I am contacted by Newcomers, and I will help all I can.
If this piece is accepted to the page, I will continue to come here.
Have a great SL experience!
Scher

FWIW - If your first language is not English and you find that the text on screen fades away a bit too quickly for you to translate, there is an option on Preferences to change this. The default value is about 15 seconds (I think) - but it you increase this to say, 30 seconds or more, then the text will remain on screen for longer and give you more time to read and translate it.

You guys keep mentioning the internet translators out there and a few have noticed how inaccurate they are…
Its fun to take a block of text, translate it into another language then back to english…
We value free expression. However, stuff that’s off-topic, abusive, or otherwise busts the rules will be removed without comment.
After German:
We evaluate free expression. However you fill, which is the way topic, abusively or differently the guidelines far away without note blow up.
After French:
We evaluate the free expression. However, stuff which is with the far-matter, abusive, or bursts the rules differently will be removed without comment.
In short… if you are going to use these things keep your phrasing very simple… expressions like “Busts the rules” do not translate well.
