Grid Issues Update
Thursday, January 25th, 2007 at 3:20 PM by: claudialindenBetween 3pm and 3:15pm PST approximately we experienced some heavy loading on the asset servers which may have affected your ability to teleport, rez items or use search. The load has now eased and we expect normal performance to resume shortly. We will keep you updated if problems resume.

January 25th, 2007 at 3:24 PM
and in other news, I only had 5 crashes today. Hopefully such improvements will continue. Good job!
January 25th, 2007 at 3:25 PM
So why don’t you LIMIT the number of logged in residents when your infrastructure obviously can NOT handle the load. We are beginning to lose our patience…
January 25th, 2007 at 3:29 PM
Yet again..
January 25th, 2007 at 3:31 PM
totally agree
EVERYTIME we have over a certain level of logins there are instabilities, isnt it time to DRAMTICALLY increase hardware
OR LIMIT the free NON VALIDATED accounts???
January 25th, 2007 at 3:31 PM
You know its the same story time and time again. I have been through 5 patches and so far I have seen the game performance get worse after each patch . Not to mention the fact that inventory is getting lost . I don’t know how easy it is for other people but honestly it isn’t easy to get the money to buy some of the things you need or want in this game. You spend a ton on clothes and items just to discover that crash after crash you are missing more and more. To the Lindens , whoever you are realize that not only are you angering and inconveniencing your customers , you are actually cause us to lose money now, I know from any business standpoint a loss of cash is disastrous. Fix the problem already.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:33 PM
Well at least they’re admitting its a load issue.
What we would really really like from you linden PLEASE!, is a little blog entry outlining your plans for expanding the capacity to deal with the increasingly higher peak usage levels.
Walking into the ground, or ending up at 0,0,0 on a sim when standing up isn’t exactly my favourite hobby
January 25th, 2007 at 3:34 PM
well like that’s something new ??? this happens everyday come on get some knowledgeable experts hired to solve the problems with the databases…
January 25th, 2007 at 3:38 PM
Dear Lindens:
From 9 am SL time, we were experiencing slow loading of textures, problems rezzing objects from inventory, LAG, and problems TP’g - all this from a sim with barely any scripts running and over 12,000 free prims and with only one person on it.
In addition, transactions yesterday were not updating to the transaction list on the SL website literally for hours. I had some transactions from yesterday that took over 8 hours to show up.
It’s getting harder and harder to run a business, create inventory, and service customers in the current environment.
We’ve about completed one sim and are beginning development of the 2nd, but have halted any plans to buy additional sims until Linden Lab begins to resolve some of the main issues that make operating a business in Second Life next to impossible.
FYI - the last update broke my deluxe bathrooms, just like the early December 2006 update broke the musical christmas tree stands. I will note that i’ve still not received any reply other than “we’re looking into it” and “I’ve passed it along” on the Christmas Tree stands.
In the meantime, i’ve refunded money to those individuals who bought Christmas Tree Stands, and I’d sold quite a few of them in November, 2006.
I expect that i’ll now have to start refunding money on the broken bathrooms.
I have NO doubt, that there will be NO problem with the Linden Lab systems that collect the sim tier payments from my credit card.
I’ll file a bug report on the bathrooms, but hold out little hope that i’ll get any type of resolution.
Yes, Linden Lab has created an amazing system. Now it’s become time to stop enhancing it and start fixing the basic problems. Teleporting, Rezzing Objects, Creating Objects, etc., are all part of the basis of our economy here.
In order to continue to have a viable community, these basic services must exist. Please restore them.

hmmmmm…… and i still cant log in
January 25th, 2007 at 3:44 PM
If we could get all the free accounts to donate a dollar a month to Linden Labs , they could hire additional staff to fix all thats going wrong . A bug free update sounds good right about now . . .
January 25th, 2007 at 3:48 PM
Jerr that idea sucks. This grid problem is made of noobs and WE AT LINDEN LAB WILL MAKE SL SHINY BEFORE WE FIX OUR PROBLEMS.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:48 PM
Of course the load seems to have eased. People who are in world and can’t DO anything useful are going to log out aren’t they. Now it ‘appears’ to be better, we’ll log back in. Let’s see how it holds up. Meanwhile.. I cancelled my premium account. If you ever provide some throttling that gives premium accounts priority, I’ll sign up again.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:49 PM
I don’t know what your talking about. But im doing backflips and shooting at the same time on grid.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:51 PM
I agree,
What we need is to manage the overload with hundreds of account requiring no payment info and the sytem overload. I used to love SL now when logging on if a see over 23,000 residents im just leaving.
LL ought to just be honest and say they are out of their depth on this one, I tire of spending real money to buy L just to have the problems we are having.
We are just getting very very tired of these reapeated problems.. day after day after day.. My eyes are already looking elsewhere and when another comparable 3d chat comes along .. and it almost certainly will. then I will make the hard break and go.
Come on LL we are getting weary not resigned.. if another brighter, newer, and stable chat comes along you can say bye bye to your residents, its happened before to other chats.

January 25th, 2007 at 3:52 PM
Anything new..? Nope…
Just stop trying to shove in new features and focus on the bugs! Realy, that would be the best thing to do right now… What would you do with a brand new car with all the features on the market, if it’s motor was too weak to even move it, eh?
January 25th, 2007 at 3:52 PM
2 alts per IP adress will fix everthing.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:53 PM
Limit alts to 2 per IP adress instead of using emails. IT IS THE WAY OF THE FUTURE.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:55 PM
Sure. Except for all those people with ISPs who provide dynamic IPs, like me. Meaning if I reboot my router, I get a new address.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:56 PM
I never thought I’d say this …. Linden Labs, I’m losing my patience. Worked for hours on a build only to have it all poof away …
Please, fix what is wrong. Who cares if the blog has new graphics when you loose $20 USD worth of excited electons? And I’m just thrilled that Phillip gets on the cover of magazines …. but let the writers of those articles visit SL on equipment not babied along by Linden Labs.
I’m sorry, I know it’s not you grunts on the front lines screwing around. I know its poor management. I’m just so tired of working hard on something to have it poof away.
Off my soapbox now.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:56 PM
Then we are all doomed.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:57 PM
I am a builder of anti griefer stuff. And i refuse to be taken as a noob.
January 25th, 2007 at 3:59 PM
Give up Now..Don’t bother posting anything against SL or any other performance issue here or in the forums , all you will get is a ‘Notice of Disiplnary Action’ and a threat to have your account locked for 3 days, while the griefers have free reign.
Great Place!
I will just shut up and pay for it…

Just crashed… was in a sky box and fell over 400 feet… said SL & the sim it had problems (insert technical name here). You know your not in Kansus any more when the Crash LOGGER CRASHES too!
Sorry I cant be more specific on what it said… a crash is still a crash…
Hey, If the items missing from our inventory are texures that we paid the lindens for , used less that an hour and then they went POOF, can we get a refund from the Lindens???

New Releases = SL gets worse and worse!
Dear Linden Labs…PLEASE! Fix this stupid issue…buy new servers with ALL the money you win…I dunno…just fix it! Now days, SL is impossibly playable on the afternoon (GMT -6)!
January 25th, 2007 at 4:04 PM
At 2:00 today due to packet loss the world was almost unusable so I logged out. This is an ongoing increasing trend with the numbers of simultaneous users these days.
January 25th, 2007 at 4:04 PM
Get rid of the free accounts…tell them they have a time limit on getting some “payment info on file” and if they dont then close the account down. Campers in SL is also an issue that needs to be looked at too.
January 25th, 2007 at 4:06 PM
Stop going against npis. Its the noobs.

FWIW, I’ve found that things have been MORE stable this last week than they have been for a while. Yes, there have been a few problems, but nothing like the way things were a month ago. Whatever is going on, things DO seem to be slowly improving.

LL owe me alot more than that and refuse to even answer the phone, let alone support queries.. EVERY single day, same problems. Its honestly no wonder SL is mocked so much.. Its obvious they’re under manned, under equipted and possibly under skilled (for this kind of project/business) yet still they dont address the issues. The dont even reply to blogs anymore… If only we could get some answers, instead of constant “yup, we’re trying to fix it, please hold” then it may put peoples mind to rest.. I know I sound shirty, I’m not having ago at anyone here, just venting.. Some feedback if you will, powers that be?
January 25th, 2007 at 5:29 PM
good grief, blame the noobs, blame the new accounts, blame everything except the 100 or so scripts your running in your house and on yourself or the million items in your inventory.
I’m a free account, have paid exactly $15 USD into LL in the last 6 months. have lost minimal inventory and only when I was carrying around 5000+ items. I learned to save at every step when I am making the 60+ milti prim clothing I sell. Just like I do with word processing documents in real life. I have seen these same problems when SL has 5000 people in it and when it had 25000 people inworld.
ITS A NEW TECHNOLOGY!!!!.
give it a break,
Yes the regular “world slow down announcements” are annoying, but so are 100 people screaming that it is all SSDD. Its NEW, they are facing things no one has had to deal with before because of that. NOTHING in this world or in sl ever runs or will run totally error free all the time.
January 25th, 2007 at 5:31 PM
You fixed it? Too late. Last night I sold my land, and will becopme an unverified come July. I will only pay for a service worth paying for.
January 25th, 2007 at 6:01 PM
While yes many of these issues are aggravating, we have to remember that much of this is new technology, each update is a risk, where one thing may improve another may not. I can remember not long ago, when SL was encountering a huge amount of problems and was down constantly (before the huge influx of people), this is no longer the case. Sure sometimes I feel like throwing in the hat, but you know I have to give these guys credit sticking with this. Especially after reading all the negative comments in the blog each day. I am sure all these negative comments doesn’t make any of them feel any better, and I am sure most of them are giving their best to resolve many of the issues that come up daily. Just think about how long it takes for most software developers to ever perform and update of any sort, if ever. Then again maybe if some of you actually did leave instead of threaten to, it would cut down on the asset server enough that the rest of us could function. Personally I know many of us appreciate all the hard work the Lindens are doing, although sometimes we don’t say it enough. Lindens TY. Hopefully we can start seeing a little more positive reinforcement, and showing that we are standing behind them. But then again reaching over 26,000 people online today is enough to say their doing a damn good job.
January 25th, 2007 at 6:48 PM
god forbid if all the almost 3 million residents logged on at the same time. The data bases would most likely catch fire and explode like a nuclear bomb.
January 25th, 2007 at 7:29 PM
I know this is off topic. But i can’t send “help requests”. As much as you lindens believe that your no combat messages in weapons testing work, they don’t. They refuse to stop griefing and crashing the sim. So working on weapon projects is impossible. Weapons testing needs linden support. And if these griefers continue to cause trouble and get away with it, i will just have to test an upcoming super weapon meant for combat sims only and there will be a big mess. I should be able to enjoy my second life but i can’t because of griefers, and if not im just gonna have to say oops and not come back down from an orbit to control said weapon.
January 25th, 2007 at 7:54 PM
Shadow Engawa I know this isnt a fix to the problem but turning particals off and gon non phys helps alot..
January 25th, 2007 at 8:12 PM
As far as “This is new, give it a break” goes - 25,000 simultaneous users on a grid technogogy server farm’s not new. I work with systems that would only start to look alive under that kind of load. It may be design scalability, in hardware, software, network.. who knows. Needless to say it is far easier to design a system that supports that number of concurrent connections than it is to design one for 5,000 connections and to try to grow it.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:34 PM
Non phys doesn’t protect against the crashes and loss of work. Im taking this to the plate.
January 25th, 2007 at 9:35 PM
…almost everytime i come in i crash or my inventory doesn’t load…i can’t buy land as tab doesn’t work…as a relatively new user if ifnd thid soooooooo frustrating to say the least….
January 26th, 2007 at 2:08 AM
There’s a reason why Linden Lab cannot simply limit the number of concurrent logins. It would be like admitting that SL doesn’t scale as it was supposed to do, i.e. there’s no room for growth. Since all the current issues seem to be caused by the asset server, it’s becoming obvious that this is a central point of failure in SL’s fundamental design.
While it is true that there’s no limit to the number of sims as each sim is just another standard server PC, but there’s a limit to the capacity of the asset server’s database as it needs to be hosted on a single “big iron” machine. Unless this vital part of SL gets decentralised (in the sense of decentralisation commonly found in P2P networks which proved to be literally indestructible), there’s no way for SL to grow much further, which in turn questions its promised potential as a future 3D WWW platform.
January 26th, 2007 at 4:04 AM
why does everyone blame the new members? not everyone wants land, therefore it’s not neccesary to have payment info on file unless you want land… a lot of so called new members create content for SL, so please give it a rest.. i’m sure everyone at LL gets stressed when the grid comes under strain and reads this blog. i honestly don’t think it’s as bad a what most people make it out to be. oh and again… stop the noob bashing, it’s just childish.
January 26th, 2007 at 8:22 AM

I had alot of ideas for the problems we’ve all encountered here in Second Life & to me it’s mainly the objects all hae aquired or its the popular places with alot of people that goes constantly. To me if we had a limit to some of the objects we can carry & limit the places up to a reaonable level then I would say the Second Life WOULD be somewhat more progressive. But no it’s always push the limit with more n more because we cant have enough …I’d be ONE player who always did remind ENOUGH IS ENOUGH limit the stuff PLZ……………………….
Thanks,
Chris

“Shadow Engawa Says: Stop going against npis. Its the noobs.”
Yes we need to not let any one online who has less than 12months time in SL
But the experts here will tell you SL is really crap because of the patches trying to fix things.
