First Look: Render Pipeline Improvements Updated
Thursday, January 25th, 2007 at 5:57 PM by: Steve LindenPreviously I introduced the First Look: Render Pipeline Improvements version of the Second Life Viewer.
This has been updated with the changes in the 1.13.2.15 Viewer update, along with some bug fixes and more optimizations. It can be downloaded here.
A couple of important changes:
- First Look now maintains its own set of preferences. This means that this install will start off with the default settings. The upside is that any changes to preferences that you make for the First Look Viewer will not affect your official Viewer.
- Uninstalling First Look will no longer remove your preferences.
- Both of the above are also true for any new Beta Viewers (which will maintain their own settings).
Once again thank you for your feedback. Keep it coming!
In particular, any help identifying systems that are unstable is greatly appreciated. Please include the following information:
- Operating System
- Graphics Card
- Crash Frequency
- Does the crash happen with Preferences -> VBO enabled, disabled, or both?
Complete release notes follow:
Changes:
* IMPORTANT: “First Look” now maintains its own settings. When this version is installed, settings will all be set to default values.
* IMPORTANT: Uninstalling “First Look” will no longer remove any user settings
* More optimizations
* Stability improvements
Fixes:
* Fixed bug with HUD attachments not appearing
* Fixed bug wit llSetPos
* Fixed prim selection silhouettes
* Fixed white invisiprim bug
* Fixed smoke texture bug
* Fixed alpha sorting issues
* Fixed Highlight Transparent

With the previous version of the FirstLook client, I found I could not click on any object and select “edit” without the client crashing. What this meant was that I was going in-world to build, I used the regular client, but if I wanted the fantastic framerate increases that the FL client gave, I used the FL client… Everytime I’d crash using the FL client, I made sure that the crash report got thru… Hopefully, this FL build will allow me to see the fantastic framerate increases (hopefully better yet on this version) AND be able to build without changing clients…

XP Media, Geoforce7500 LE , yea I had the edit crash problem as well, got a nice burst of colours from the positions arrows before it happened as well. Not sure if this update fixes it also but I can’t send calling card conference
January 25th, 2007 at 7:49 PM
Ok this one is actually worse on my Compaq nx9420
2 GIG RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
FPS falls to low values reducing draw distance does not help
Was getting 7 FPS on some islands..25 to 30 on my neearly empty sim
When driving vehicles, vehicles move off leaving avatar in place

Return of the slow texture rez! Logged in at 19:35 PST, did chores, came back at 19:47 PST and my head textures had yet to rez (either fully in the case of my eye texture, or at all in the case of my cheek and ear textures). Frame rates while just standing in my apartment in Serenity Woods, facing dead South from on top of my bed, would fluctuate at a steady pace. It was almost like a sine wave. It’d go up as high as 29 at one point, then suddenly start going down and reverse at 18. Not quickly either, it’d take a good 5 seconds at least for each wax/wane of the fps. Keep in mind, there is NOTHING in view moving, and my mouse cursor is idle. In fact I came back to my computer to see my away thought bubble.
More updates as I test. System specs:
OS: Windows XP
Graphics Card: ATi Radeon 9700 Pro (AGP), 128 MB VRAM
System RAM: 512 MB DDR RAM
Processor: Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
Crash Freq: None so far, an apparent crash on first launch was a coincidental log in while the sim was crashing. VBO is enabled.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:07 PM
Hmm, guess that first launch crash was suspicious after all…
Standing in SW’s sandbox, looking roughly WNW towards a pile of cubes and Puck Pacer, my frame rate (while just standing there, mouse cursor out of window) shows the same sort of sine wave activity. It fluctuates between 15 and 7 over the course of 5-10 seconds.
Movement of the camera, even as slight as zooming in one click of my mouse wheel, will cause my frame rate to plummet to 4-6 no matter where I am.
Oh, I guess for reference, LoD sliders are all maxed, except trees which are minimum. Local lighting is turned on, bumpmapping is enabled, as are shiny and ripple water. Draw distance is 128. Screen resolution is 1280×1024.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:07 PM
ok cool, looks like this one is going back to the drawing board. Good approach for doing testing like this. I can go back to my regular viewer. Problem is that more people will try Firstlook only if it is better than the regular viewer more often than not. Tricky issue, to get more beta users.

New Macbook Pro
When becoming NP my AV seems to stay where I first became NP. Still can move around, others still see me, but I see my AV back where I first was.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:22 PM
It appears to be working well for me, so far. (Windows XP SP2, GeForce 7600 GT, VBO enabled). Better framerate than the main client.
I still see alpha sorting issues on things, but maybe slightly better or the same as the main client. (If that’s what was meant by the fix.)
January 25th, 2007 at 8:22 PM
I love it. It’s working wonderfully for me so far - things load so fast, and I think it has crashed on me even less than the official client. I can finally have all the Graphics Detail sliders turned up to the maximum and it handles it fine. It’s so much better than the official client I think I’m going to use this from now on (if that’s possible).
Not sure if this info will be helpful, I found it by going to the Help menu and selecting About Second Life…

Everytime i go to edit something the viewer crashes. Usualy get the gigantic axis arrows too. I haven’t tried disabling VBO yet, doubt that’ll fix it but i’ll give it a try. So far i find myself switching back and forth between viewers to edit things and then to enjoy the added FPS.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:27 PM
Except for invisiprims not appearing any different when their texture offset is changed, or colored. Will send a bug report shortly.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:27 PM
Looking around the market place in SW, frame rate is 6 at best (but at least it’s consistantly 5-6… >.>; ). And this is dispite me dropping my resolution to 1024×768.
Occlusion culling seems to be doing dick all however, the octree display shows lots of big blue cubes and very few red ones. Occlusion mode shows a LOT of wireframes for things that should be completely out of sight (like everything behind a certain wall, and everything in the basement of the store).
Texture priority’s colouration seems to have changed too, now there’s dark blues and deep greens. A lot of the aforementioned colours, mostly blues. Distant apartments almost at the edge of my draw distance are a teal/off white greyish colour and seem to have fully rezzed while close up textures just aren’t rezzing. I think perhaps you inverted the texture priorities? >)
January 25th, 2007 at 8:30 PM
Client crashed when I entered mouselook 3 out of 4 tries, but seems to work fine now. Other then that a great improvement in fps.With regular client 40 to 45 fps. With First Look Client 65 tp 70 fps.

I have a reproducible bug report, though I’m baffled as to a cause.
Op Sys: WinXP, SP2
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420
Crash Frequency: Completely reproducible (every time this action is taken)
VBO: both
While in an IM window, if I type (any where on the line):
“Boing!”
…and hit ‘Enter’ — the FirstLook viewer simply goes away. Period. Not even a “you’ve crashed” notice when I restart it.
Typing ‘boing’ WITHOUT the quotes doesn’t cause this behavior.
This has got to be the weirdest bug I’ve run across yet…

January 25th, 2007 at 8:40 PM
Oh, yeah, I forgot to try creating any objects. OK, so, I right-clicked, pressed Create on the pie menu, then, when I tried to click on the ground to create a cube, it instantaneously quit. When I logged back in, though, I did find that the cube had been successfully created.
Oddly enough, now that I’m logged in again, I can create all the cubes I want. This time, though, I was careful to first dismiss the blue pop-up window that came up after I pressed “Create”.
I don’t think I bothered to close that window before the time it crashed when I created a cube… I don’t even remember seeing that pop-up, I think I clicked on the floor so fast the pop-up might not have even shown up before the client crashed.

I emptied my trash and crashed. Now cannot logon, it just crashes. windows xp, GeForce 7600 GT, Crashes perpetual.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:44 PM
Update:
I confirmed with the main client’s texture console and texture priority. The First Look client seems to twiddle its thumbs when it comes to texture downloading if the camera isn’t moving. But if the camera moves, it needs to load more textures, and so the vicious cycle begins. o.O;
Also, particles in the First Look client are excessively slow compared to the main client. They seem to match the frame rate displayed in the stats bar, versus the main client which seems to render particles as fast as it can, often with smooth results.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:53 PM
Wish I could compare the occlusion render modes, but the main client’s occlusion mode seems to generate lots and lots of white cubes that hide everything in view. >.>;
Octree info mode however shows a similar set of results, though with more red blocks in view.
The memory footprint of the First Look client is much better though. I can quickly switch between firefox and the client with no, or next to no caching involved. And while particles might be off, flexi-tails have never matched up this well. Normally when the main client lags a bit you’ll see the two or three parts of a flexi-tail moving at different rates, even though under ideal circumstances (and ideal frame rates, 20+) they should all move as one.

I find if I am in edit mode and have a prim selected when I take a screenshot, the fog in the screenshot is dense and a dark greenish-yellowish color. Reported. (I’ve already mentioned my hardware/OS)
Building has worked okay for me.
The “Boing!” IM thing hasn’t crashed me. O.o

January 25th, 2007 at 10:07 PM
I don’t know if this is the right place to post this (let me know if there is a better place):
I just downloaded the client and have found a problem with the particle system (at least on the Mac client). One of my particle effects using the angle pattern and a burst radius are not being emitted as they ought (they are coming out in a vertical stream a couple of meters above the prim instead of in a ring a meter in radius. I can provide a copy of the script if it will help.

wait your running 4 giga with xp pro expamded to vista? Is this possible? I been told that only the X64 os was stable with 4 giga?
January 25th, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Seems you’ve missunderstood Usagi. I’m running windows XP in a separate Hard Draive partition and Vista in another. I dualboot. When i want XP, i boot XP, when i want Vista I boot Vista
Both are x86 versions and not 64bit OS. Btw Steve, have to report 2 crash incidents. With VBO on or off. When tring to edit and object Client crashes and When changing from Window mode to fullscreen will in game. Yes speed is impresive on this version. From prior, i have a 7% extra FPS on a benchmark comparison…. =o)
January 25th, 2007 at 10:51 PM
Your not very clear on your specs……be more clear
If someone is running 4 giga on a sli XP pro system that from what i been told unstable……
Whatever your running fine ok just be more clear…

Installed fine and was able to login the first time. Reset the preferences to the way I had them before and when I closed the Preference Menu it crashed. I can no longer log in at all (crashes every time). I’ve tried it with VBO enabled and disabled.
Windows XP

NVidia Geforce 6800 512MB

The regular viewer works fine (well as fine as it ever worked
January 25th, 2007 at 11:17 PM
But I don’t want to change my preferences every time. What an annoying waste.
Can we have a preference import? I just won’t be able to use the client if I spend all my time trying to remember all my settings every download.
January 25th, 2007 at 11:20 PM
Musashi, there’s a 64bit version of XP, too. I don’t see how they could be more clear (for how muddy the rest of their comments were)

With the latest First Look Client, if I am on a NP (non-phys) vehicle, I cannot see my avatar in front of me when I’m moving - instead I see my avatar on the spot I was standing before I got on the NP.Very Annoying!
Others see me perfectly, however.
Anyway, back to using the slightly older FL viewer (glad I didn’t delete the installer like I normally do).
January 26th, 2007 at 12:43 AM
No problems logging in and operating as normal with the previous First Look client.
However, with this most recent version I can’t get beyond the loading screen before crashing. Ever time.
I’ve tried deleting all the cache, and First Look user settings, tried VBO on and off, as well as tried lowering all graphics settings to the minimum. Still crashes at the loading screen.

Great job once again, but there are things…hopefully just not in my client.
Things rezz slowly, VERY slowly, could take up to 5-10 minutes before everything is resolved for me, and I doubt this is a client side bug since everything works just nicely in the normal version.
Also, in the normal version there seems to be derezzing problems. Things go fuzzy after some period of time.
The FPS boost is huge in the first look though, I love what you guys have done to this client.

This version seems a bit better than last, but one thing annoys me. The very first First Look client, Id get like 15 to 20 FPS higher than the main client. These last two versions i barely get 5 to sometimes 10 FPS improvement with the same settings…
OS X 10.4.8 x86
Radeon x1600 256mb
w/ VBO on
January 26th, 2007 at 1:35 AM
ok i tested some more, all in the same spot, and settings. I was getting about 17 fps with the main client, the FL client with VBO off i get about 12, and with VBO on it jumps around 20 - 23 …. odd that its so much slower with VBO off than the normal client. This didnt happen with the first version of First Look
January 26th, 2007 at 2:07 AM
Bug with selection outlines, 100% reproducible:
I have a large scripted attachment (200+ prims). Whenever I (or anybody else using FL) select it, the entire screen is filled with the selection glow.
Windows XP Media Center Edition

will the install of this render pipeline improvement (rpi) overwrite the normal viewer or can i fool with one and return to the other at any time?
January 26th, 2007 at 2:57 AM
EnCore you can install the First Look (RPI) viewer alongside the normal viewer, it doesn’t overwrite the normal viewer, so yes you can use one and return to the other at any time.

I use an alt account to do testing of First Look, or the Beta grid, just in case. Be aware that the password is remembered between the First Look and the main viewer.
If you have the ‘remember password’ option on the login screen and then login to the First Look viewer with your alt account then log back into the main viewer with your main account, the password from the alt account is in the box, not the main account.

Follow Cam functionality appears to be affected in this release. I have a non-physical vehicle that uses follow cam to smooth out the movement. It takes user control, and passes it on ( llTakeControls(…….,TRUE); )
Instead of moving the vehicle, keypresses move the camera.

One strange thing I notice is that items that give off a glow are more “annoying” now with this client. An example is the VGI Money Doubler. When I turn it sometimes gets so bright I can’t see much else and then I turn just a little more and it is fine again. Not sure if it is a bug or if anyone else has noticed this.
January 26th, 2007 at 4:49 AM
Yesterday I managed to use this viewer many hours. and I liked it.
Today I find it crashes in some locations every time I go there. For sure. VBO on or off seems not to matter. Cleared cache, no help.
Maybe a broken texture inworld or something. I can go there with the normal viewer, no problem.
MacOS / G4 / ATI Radeon 9600 / VBO both / 2GB RAM / 2,5 GB texture cache

continuing from my posts 44 and 45…
Not sure why this would affect it, but I crashed completely randomly trying to change some settings. Before i logged back in i hit clear cache, then restarted SL again, then logged in… and the FPS is about 20FPS higher than it was before, I’m not sure if it was something with the crash that reset something, or if it was the cache.
January 26th, 2007 at 5:49 AM
* Fixed alpha sorting issues
ok now Im curious to test this viewer
January 26th, 2007 at 6:54 AM
Crashed repeatedly at first, which seemed to be cured by a cache flush. Beyond that, a little wandering around Furnation Prime showed no gross errors, nor any particular performance improvements. Crashed again after a few minutes.

Good improvement. But I like the last FS, too.
Anyway, seeing some changes that are puzzleing.
1. Ran search>all>lucky chair. Selected Zia> teleport. As soon as the screen “entered” teleport mode, sequence immediately completed, showing Avatar in new location. Displayed message “Left-clicking interacts with special objects…” After several seconds, tp sequence restarted (on its own). It “hesitated” for “awhile” on “Requesting tp”. Then “jumped” to completed tp. Seach coordinates were Dryas 248, 217, 56 and ended up in Dryas 247, 217, 57. Displayed message “Left-clicking interacts with special objects…”
2. Seeing messages: “Left-clicking interacts with special objects…” Will you offer an “advanced” mode where these new explanatory messages can be suppressed? However, these messages are great for newbies. Please don’t get rid of them.
3. The “choppy” flying in the previous FL is gone and it is really “smoooth”.
NOTE: since I’m using a non-supported CPU, I did not write these up. However, I’m including them here for FYI. Also, I did not use this on the beta grid.

With regards to the new seperation of settings from the main client, perhaps have the FL/Beta clients copy the settings file from the main client (or prompt to copy) simply to eliminate the need to reconfigure a client from scratch. (Did it once after uninstalling an old focus viewer, don’t ever wanna do it again for any reason)
Maybe another thing would be in the uninstall a “Remove settings file?” prompt.

about this time started crashing on login - every time - was working fine before that - region handshake never happens - had just signed up and enjoyed figuring it out for about 2 hrs - now won’t connect at all

I’m not getting the insane frame rates with this build that I was with the last one. It’s still good though. 40-50 average with peaks around 70 at 512 draw distance, everything turned on, and 16xQ anti-aliasing is nothing to sneeze at, but the 100+ I was getting before did spoil me a little.
Turning off VBO drops me down to about 35 FPS.
That’s without SLI, by the way. In SLI mode, the numbers are 60-100 FPS with VBO on, depending on which direction I look. With VBO off, I lose about 20FPS. With the previous build, I was getting a steady 145-175 FPS in SLI mode.

This client is useless. It crashes with 30 seconds of startup, every time, whether VBO is enabled or not.

Oh, almost forgot, how about graphics card options for more than just 512MB? I’m not sure how selecting 512 on a system 1516 is affecting things.

Rainbowing of some textures, certain textures will explode into a wonderful psychadelic acid trip array of beautiful rainbows. This doesn’t bother me all the time, it’s quite an amazing affect. On in-world objects it goes ‘in’ and ‘out’ as you rotate, viewing angle of the prim seems to determine if you’ll see the normal texture or the rainbow, on the hud item, it’s all the time. I have seen this affect solid object(no texture, colored) as well as objects with alpha’d textures.

finally got the production client to run stable and reliable on this unsupport graphics chipset(vs instant crash before), works great. just the build/edit/create in the First Look client explodes.

Alpha texture render order still looks confused.

Started with all settings maxed out.
When video memory set to 256 Mb i see major processor hickups, sometimes for more then 15 secs.
Not workable, Fps 1!, ping user and sim between 800 /1700, ping user
When video memory set to 128 is a bit better, 5/10 fps, no hickups
Textures get mixed up in all video memory setting. In the previous first Look this texture mixing was gon when video memory was set to 128 Mb
Overall performance is much worse then the previous First Look.

Frame rates seem a tad slower maybe. but still good.
Floppie Prims look MUCH better!
Particles are still not nearly as good as the normal client. Normal client the particles seem to free run, now they stutter and speed up and down depending on angle, distance etc. BUT they do seem better than the last client… Is this some balancing between effects and FR maybe?

Oh, “Hide Selected” still does not work…
January 26th, 2007 at 11:10 AM
Unfortunately can’t edit diddly with this or the previous release. This one crashes every time I go to edit, plus the rendering of the direction arrows is awful. They leave enormous artifacts all over the screen, have phantom tails and look awful.

Enabling local lights causes immediate crash. Turning VBO off had no effect on this.

Better.
Alpha still not perfect, but improved (frost fingers on my windows still not *quite* right).
Textures taking a long time to load initially - I mean a SERIOUSLY long time - minutes.
Cured the tiny freezes completely.
Personal FPS now >100 with 300m draw and all graphics options on/maxed out.
Textures seem even more detailed and smoother than previously.
Looking very good.

Afterthought - on first use it detects my card as having 16MB RAM, which is a mite on the low side :-), it appears not to affect performance at all. Worth mentioning though as autodetect ia obviously NOT functioning terribly well.

Is anybody else having trouble walking? It may just be lag, but I keep “popping” back and forth when I try to move. I also still crash when building sometimes, but all in all, this is a good step in the right direction

Initial log-in with First Look viewer went well, about 1.5 hour session…found two bugs, one with right-clicking attachments causes a full yellow screen and when clicking edit during the same session causes an intermittent full blue screen. Also found a bug where an alpha texture with a design (i.e. a flame texture) applied to all sides of a cube that then has one axis shrunk to 0.01m will cause the entire prim to vanish when the camera is cammed away from it. (Probably due to the new alpha sorting change?)
Past that, FPS was higher than ever, textures loaded just a touch slower than the previous First Look viewer. However I was just logged out with the “You have been idle more than 30 minutes” message, even though I hadn’t been idle - I was tabbing back and forth from SL to another program, but I had just tabbed into SL when I got the message. After that, I’ve been unable to relog using the First Look viewer…it crashes about a second after I log in, long enough to hear sounds.
I’ve bug reported the first two bugs and send the crash notices each time I’ve tried to relog.

There’s something severely wrong with the camera/sitting code.
Sit on a prim, drag it — prim moves, but I stay behind.
Rez a vehicle, sit in it, go into mouselook and fly — the vehicle zooms off and I stay behind.
Well, hey, price of progress, eh?

chat terxt is not highlighted if left in chat window which is closed and reopened, I thought this had been fixed?
January 26th, 2007 at 1:18 PM
Oh, just noticed that the chat history box is not opening above the little tabs on the lower info bar, the release keys, music and movies tabs overlap it. Also something I thought had been fixed.

ive been crashing when reapplying my graphic details, its happened when ive sleect any of the boxes, ive managed to get most of them selected by clicking one then relogging to save it fully. Most of the time it seems to be crashin on changing to local lights from sun and moon.

hello everyone.
Who have Nvidia Gforce serie 6 + , go to nvidia.com and download the latest driver will help you better. and adjust it to blind.
if you have rendrering trouble check the OpenGL compatibility with your card, sometime Directx is a not 100% qualified, opengl is the one controlling the 3d speed and rendering in the game, we will search for a tool to give you a best calculation to accelerate the game 3d.
see ya dudes.

The auto-updater is taking a long long time to download. It normally flys by and i’m updated in 5 minutes, looks like it’s going to take a couple of hours.
Even download from the site it says 2-9hours :\
Must be something on my end, bloody homecall pipex

I was pretty stable before but now I am crashing all the time.
* Operating System: XP
* Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X700
* Crash Frequency: about hourly
* Does the crash happen with Preferences -> VBO enabled, disabled, or both? VBO is at default of off.
This is a bummer because I am paying for two sims and spending a of time rebooting my machine.
Hope this info is helpful for a fix.

O_O I can’t even get on anymore, i crashed edititng something (different then previous problems) and ive crashed each of the past 3 times i logged in. and right when everythign is loaded and about to start

my SL client window spreads around my screen when I move it via mouse, same goes for the SL updater, it’s so freezy, buggy and non responsive, no other windows and applications do this. I believe there is a name for this strange buggy effect were the windows smear and spread on your screen when moved ;\
Anyone else having buggy non responsive problems with their sl client - before the update. (I havnt downloaded yet it’s taking like 0001k per a second

How the devil do you even activate VBO in the first look viewer, anyway? It’s not where it is in the release viewer. Also, has anyone else been seeing a crash every time the try to edit their own objects with this first look viewer, and also did you see it with the previous one?

Oops. Didn’t notice a new First look viewer was out. I’ll test that one and see if I still get that crash.

on a mac mini, turning on reflections results in HUGELY MAJOR drop in FPS and horrid viewer lag. (its like swiveling the camera thru molasses).
