Second Life 1.13.2 Release, Downtime today 01/17/07 until approx. 3pm PST
Tuesday, January 16th, 2007 at 7:03 PM by: Jesse Linden[UPDATE 03:04PM PST] The Grid is now open to all Residents.
[UPDATE 11:43AM PST] Part of the maintenance scheduled for today involved rebooting several parts of the grid. Unfortunately it looks as though there was a configuration glitch which has caused some of the hosts to come up with improper network configurations. We’re addressing this as quickly as we can but it may be 3:00pm PST (GMT 23:00) before we’re able to open the grid up. This is independent of the 1.13.2 server and viewer upgrade. We will continue to post more news as it becomes available. Thanks for your continued patience.
In our continuing effort to improve the Second Life experience, we will be taking the Grid down for maintenance from 7am - 12pm (noon) PST (15:00-20:00 GMT) . During this time Second Life will be unavailable as we update to v1.13.2. New client software will be required to access the Grid after the update. The release notes for v1.13.2 are posted below.

No fix for skinny pants:(
January 16th, 2007 at 7:26 PM
wud of been nice to have a few days notice but oh well hope its for the best
January 16th, 2007 at 7:34 PM
Wouldn’t it be a better idea to fix that little bug you found BEFORE making that official release? After all, some people may need to use that and if you throw this in as a required update, you’ll be eliminating that feature for a good while.
January 16th, 2007 at 7:38 PM
1.13.2 is on-track for release … again
After last week’s abortive update, 1.13.2 is in the final countdown for deployment on Wednesday January 17. The usual downtime window applies, 7am - Noon SLT (Second Life Time) timeslot.
January 16th, 2007 at 7:39 PM
They gave us 7 days’ notice.
January 16th, 2007 at 7:39 PM
Plenty of changes there (truncated in places due to new blog layout).
What about the missing water bug that’s been around for quite a while - any chance of that being fixed soon? And perhaps improvements on the ability to cross sim lines at any speed without careening out of control until logout?
January 16th, 2007 at 7:40 PM
And for those who are not lucky enough to have IMAX monitors, here is the bug fix list in readable format.

jesse thank you for be honest and upfront with these issues and bug! Really! I repect that
January 16th, 2007 at 8:03 PM
I love the focus fixes… focus focus focus!
January 16th, 2007 at 8:03 PM
skinny pants is the least fix we need at the moment:/
January 16th, 2007 at 8:03 PM
Woohoo! Update it while I am teaching ^.^
January 16th, 2007 at 8:12 PM
Wow Another awesome night of not being able to TP. Thanks Linden! That makes my monthly payment worth it.
January 16th, 2007 at 8:13 PM
Can you please make the font-size of the bug fixes a bit more smaller? The letters are a way to big for me!
Nah, make ‘em bigger, i barely can read it
January 16th, 2007 at 8:15 PM
Yes! Gesture saving fixed! Thanks very much, you guys! ^^

No Brasil estamosw esperando o lançamento do cliente e até agora nada…espero que esta nova versão arrume mesmo as pesquisas!
January 16th, 2007 at 9:00 PM
Dang, that’s a lot of bug fixes. I guess I’d better get on the preview grid and try to help iron out the bugs created by so many code alterations.
My personal favorite out of everything added: “Fixed ability to type accented characters using Option (Alt) as a modifier key on Mac”
Thank you, Linden Labs, now we Mac users can finally accent our foreign obscenities correctly!
January 16th, 2007 at 9:27 PM
Can you fix losing things? My SL has been freezing and I am losing inventory. My friends are losing things as well. Can you fix that before anything else? Every week it’s something I put my real $$ into this and I am beginning to get really upset.
January 16th, 2007 at 9:29 PM
As Valkyrie Eclipse said, water bug.. put it on some to-be-fixed-list please
January 16th, 2007 at 9:29 PM
Please don’t forget about the updated Linux client, many of us are already using it.
Some alternative to Quicktime for the Linux client would be cool too
January 16th, 2007 at 9:33 PM
“* ‘Xyz is typing…’ no longer causes IM tab to flash”
This is a good thing i want this option lets me know people are there and not afk
January 16th, 2007 at 9:33 PM
Curious, I haven’t seen a mention of the mail server problems happening in the last 3 days or so. Emails to objects were previously taking 2 minutes max, is now approaching 1.5 hours and some users have told me that they are seeing messages take up to 2.5 hours to arrive. I know this is not a client issue, so this may not be the appropriate post to mention it in, but I’d really like to know if someone is looking into this. Also, has anyone else reported on this one yet? Thanks.
January 16th, 2007 at 9:35 PM
thanks for shutting SL Down on my birthday its really appreciated >:(
January 16th, 2007 at 9:36 PM
Not three full days for testing on the preview grid? That is typical but still absurd.
January 16th, 2007 at 9:45 PM
this is crazy, so much down time, what happened to the seamless udates? 2 times in 10 day IS WAY TO MUCH!!!!
January 16th, 2007 at 9:48 PM
Mitzy my friend: I agree with you, the db that handles your inventory can be iffy at times. In fact, some folks have previously reported losing portions of their inventory with no backup and no real recourse. Lately, I’ve grown very concerned about this particular issue and wonder every day whether I will login to see an empty inventory (representing months of work). To this end, I have a feature request… or perhaps you kind professionals working in SL already have an answer that will help… but what if you could copy your inventory (only on items where you are the creator) to your client directories where your client-installed textures, et al live. That could help content-creators have less fear about losing valuable stuff. Likely this has been mentioned before… I’ll just throw it out there for your consideration anyhow.
Hats off to you all.
January 16th, 2007 at 9:49 PM
Damn, the 17th that’s today, oh no it’s not, it’s actually the 18th my time because I am 18 hours in the future, any chance of putting the date next to time in SL, gets confusing at times otherwise. Also in non american dat format would be good, this is the only program I ever used with it and it’s damn confusing. Why don’t you guys show time by minutes then hours then seconds too?
January 16th, 2007 at 9:59 PM
down time yes. but atleast its going to be halfway better then what it is now.
January 16th, 2007 at 10:11 PM
ugh.. why some much down time. i just became a paid member.. where are the perks?
January 16th, 2007 at 10:38 PM
as for the 7 day notice they never did tell us.It matters not really…….. As long as the game its half way better then we are having to deal with at the moment.
January 16th, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Last weeks update was pushed back. Get with the program and start planning something fun to do on Wednesday rather than pissin’ and moanin’!!
January 16th, 2007 at 11:28 PM
Good luck
Hope its stable this time.
January 16th, 2007 at 11:33 PM
the print of the bub fixes is so small on my browser.. im not sure so I’ll ask…. Is the gesture save feature going to be fixed with this update?
January 16th, 2007 at 11:51 PM
Why are updates always 7 am - 12 PST? That’s 3pm - 8pm here in UK, and a large number of us loose our SL fix for that day. SL is worldwide, so why not sometimes 12 - 5PM PST? It seems we in Europe are always the ones loosing out.

C’m on! That’s not true isn’t it….
I just can back Dirk Talamasca: Start thinking why they are updating: It’s because you complain about bugs! NOW f… stop complaining THAT they update!
I just will never understand that….
January 17th, 2007 at 12:20 AM
Ahem, has ever someone said about DUAL-Monitor Support ?? It would be nice to be able to put certain HUD’s, Menu and other stuff on a second monitor. C’mon, SL has such a demand on hardware that it isn’t unusual to have a dual monitor system if you are playing.
TJ
(I am going to play Billard tonight RL, see ya all tomorrow, maybe)
January 17th, 2007 at 12:52 AM
I just went to the downloads page for the new version. The d/l is still 1-13-1-6! Please can you update that before the update.
January 17th, 2007 at 1:01 AM
Will this still include TCP?
http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/01/09/changes-to-be-aware-of/ mentioned it before, but TCP hasn’t been mentioned in the release notes on the blog either time that I saw, just that post. If it does, I think it would be a good idea to mention it.
January 17th, 2007 at 1:09 AM
Shockwave still not loading in web tab in profile………
January 17th, 2007 at 1:09 AM
Can someone tell me if the beta grid would be available during the update?
Can I log in and be there from 7pm-12pm SLT?
January 17th, 2007 at 1:14 AM
Kath W Says:
“Damn, the 17th that’s today, oh no it’s not, it’s actually the 18th my time because I am 18 hours in the future, any chance of putting the date next to time in SL, gets confusing at times otherwise. Also in non american dat format would be good, this is the only program I ever used with it and it’s damn confusing. Why don’t you guys show time by minutes then hours then seconds too?”
That is actually a very good point Kath… since SL is now being used in almost all the world, why don’t you linden labs continue with using ISO formats? You already did well using meters instead of those nast feet and inches… dates in dd/mm/yy format and hours with GMT offset would be a nice continuation of the trend.
For anything else, good job with the bugfixes!
January 17th, 2007 at 1:19 AM
Great set of fixes! My personal favorites are:
* Added PickerContextOpacity to settings.xml
* ‘Xyz is typing…’ no longer causes IM tab to flash
* Parcel selection now cleared when closing the Edit Terrain floater
* Fixed IM windows resizing to default on open/closing of sessions
* Fixed texture repeats being applied to other prims upon linking
Great work! Let’s all hope for a smooth update! Good luck!
Zi!
January 17th, 2007 at 1:57 AM
Thanks, Dirk. I couldn’t have said it better myself!!
January 17th, 2007 at 2:22 AM
Actually Galbraith, ISO format for dates is the unmistakable one: yyyy-mm-dd and yes, SL isn’t just a North American thing any longer and the assumption that every ‘player’ is in a US timezone is somewhat annoying for those who aren’t, especially when they have to re-calculate the given time and date into their local time. Other gaves (EVE-online, for example) and nearly every website I come across uses UT - *Universal* Time - for the very reason of assisting both the current worldwide userbase and also helping it expand and take over the world (real or second!)
January 17th, 2007 at 2:24 AM
Will there be an update for the “first look” viewer too? Or will we have to revert to the standard viewer?
@Cai: Yes, the update was mentioned last week, and we always have updates on “update wednesday”
Stop moaning when there is a bug AND when there’s an update. The updates are to try and correct the bugs. Duurrrrr
January 17th, 2007 at 2:29 AM
Can someone tell me whether the BETA grid would be available during 7pm-12pm or not? Will i be able to login to beta grid and do things there in this time?
Please answer me, it’s really important for me to know this.
January 17th, 2007 at 2:59 AM
@The Birthday Person..good! Now go celebrate it in the real world!
@Erol…the update hasn’t happened yet, I’m assuming they will when the do the actual update of SL in about 4 hours.
Should always assume that Wednesday of EACH week is going to be a maintenance day so then you won’t be disappointed when they shut it down and you can plan accordingly in that big lovely space we called Life: The Real World.
And I agree with whomever said people complain about not having maintenance to fix things..then complain when they shut it down to do the maintenance to fix things. Make up your mind folks!
@Lindens…Keep up the hard work!
January 17th, 2007 at 3:00 AM

January 17th, 2007 at 3:33 AM
Just hope this update is worth my 5PM-10PM time on SL lol (my time is GMT+2 = SLT+10 = UTC+2) even if my time was SLT-10 it would be ALOT better everyday!
P.S.: Linden Lab, you need to make the regions faster or increase support for further places :-/ 300-450msec response time on Sim Ping and User Ping is WAY too much, and thats because im in Israel >:(. Hope you include this in Regions: Class 5 when you complete dev on Class 5. I have to use the First Look crashing viewer to be at least near the speed people in the US have :-/

But anyways cheers

ROFL okay the font size for the release notes? Is very, very, VERY silly.
January 17th, 2007 at 4:31 AM
/me anxiously awaits the effects of this update.
Being european I don’t like not being able to go online till 9pm but I am glad to see LL working hard to fix problems that we moan and whine on about.
I usually have no problem finding something else to fill my time with, and today I received my copy of Second Life: The Official Guide so I won’t be bored at all
Good luck LL! /me keeps her fingers crossed.

Xyz is typing, I really liked the flashing feature myself especially when I have multi IMs agoing and I can see that I’m getting replies!!! So instead of dropping it enhance it more, please, I”M being a good girl!!!
January 17th, 2007 at 5:29 AM
@Vickie:
I believe the friends name will still flash when something is actually said, but not when he/she is still typing like it does now. A lot of the time I find that people are tying in the wrong inputfield and erase their text. So they’re not saying anything but still the IM name flashes from “Xyz is typing”. It also means you won’t have to switch back and forward because somebody’s a slow typer

January 17th, 2007 at 5:32 AM
Like the others, I wish LL the very best of luck with this upgrade. They’ll need a full pack of Keep-Calm pills.
But, I have to say that - from my experience of managing Government and Health IT systems - if I let my core system go down for 5 hours I would probably be sacked.
January 17th, 2007 at 5:36 AM
Wooot
January 17th, 2007 at 6:16 AM
Can I just add how nice it is to see a time posted in GMT (UTC). I think most people are much more used to figuring out their time compared with this, and the almost universal use of PST here still causes me problems.
And hopefully if this means what I think it does…’Restored ability to use Alt to control camera, while still enabling menu access’
Then thank you so much for listening to all our feedback on this!
Asides from that, good luck with the upgrade.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:19 AM
I’m not sure what the problem is with time anyway. Once you know how many hours offset from PST you are, are people incapable of a simple calculation in their head to figure out what SLT is in their own timezone?

January 17th, 2007 at 6:34 AM

January 17th, 2007 at 6:40 AM
the water bug is fixed in the First Look viewer and seems to be handling textures in a much more effecient way,…a little different ….and it seems stable….right now I’d highly recommened it..have not found any problems at all….
January 17th, 2007 at 6:48 AM
A while back LL announced they are planning on implementing some sort of clock thingy to handle ppl’s different time zones. Meanwhile you might try
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock
It looks complicated at first glance, but if you select the “Personal Web Clock” link you can configure it so show you only
those times you wish to see - and save it so this is always your view. Mine is setup to display my time, PST (SLT), and a few of my friends around the world times. Nifty stuff.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:48 AM
I support the GMT time though you will have nearly all americans like freaking out and being… well their normal whiney complainy selves. It’s amazing how many players of international online games can’t figure out the times. like pacific to mountain, central or eastern is a matter of adding 1, 2 or 3 and i’ve seen a lot of the times even that is too much for the average american….
January 17th, 2007 at 6:54 AM
@I support the GMT time though you will have nearly all americans like freaking out and being… well their normal whiney complainy selves.
What a gesture of goodwill your post was to our lil world here. And it contributed so much to the subject at hand. Thank you.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:56 AM
Great work, thanks for the release, am looking forward to seeing the results!
At some point will the “friends online” feature of the website be synched with permissions settings….so that you don’t show up online per the website, even when you’re completely hidden in-world?
That would be very good, and should be a super easy fix on the site….
January 17th, 2007 at 6:56 AM
if you still want to play second life get the beta
January 17th, 2007 at 6:57 AM
15:00-20:00 GMT This is the correct time for all europian people outthere.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:58 AM
@ A. Jetaime. Why so hostile? In case you forgot, LL is a US-based company. You wouldn’t even be able to play it if it weren’t for those “whiney complainy” Americans.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:59 AM
SL Goodluck with the new updates! Fingers crossed! Cheers and keep the soul alive!
January 17th, 2007 at 7:03 AM
Regarding Time and Timestamps: I get confused when I receive the IMs that were sent when I was offline and they come in LOCAL time (I’m GMT) instead of SLT with NO way to teel it apart… maybe all the IM and chat timestamps should include the timezone?
(or at least be *consistent*)
Oh, and by the way, why not include the date when writing the chat and IM logs to disk? it’s bloody annoying trying to find stuff from a couple days back in the chat log when all you have is [hours:minutes] to go by
January 17th, 2007 at 7:04 AM
I hate to be picky, but please let us know by e-mail A.S.A.P. when you write something in your blog. It is always sent a half day later.

Miche Rainbow: “ummm…hitting enter, or return, brings up the chat thing”
Unfortunately not if something else has the focus, eg. your inventory. Weird, history and IM has a keyboard shortcut, but not the most used feature: the chat line.

wishing good luck to the LL’s for the upgrade…
January 17th, 2007 at 7:12 AM
LOL, I didn’t mean to start a flame war guys, just saying thanks for using UTC! It is the global standard and it is appreciated. And with 2.6 million registrations I think it’s arguable that ‘we’re not in Kansas anymore’.
January 17th, 2007 at 7:12 AM
Good Luck - wasn’t it just last week there was an update too? heehe
Good luck SL

The should change the item menu the delte function should not been above wear functon if you not click right you delete it it happens to me often and then have to search for it in the trash then purched it does not go back were you deleted it from
January 17th, 2007 at 7:13 AM
I have not so much trouble with the time difference itself, but with the am/pm stuff, esp. when it around twelfe…I just can’t get that in my head. lol
So, if ever a change is made to the clock in game, I’d vote for a selectable 12h/24h system…but it’s for sure not top priority.
January 17th, 2007 at 7:13 AM
Guys, You are doing great Jobs. To handle such Bandwith and such complcted gris. You are really good and dedicated to this huge challenges.

What would be nice is if this were to be done, late evening early morning. Instead of when the are a lot of people on at this time. Please can you try scheduling your down time like early morning hours. Maybe after 3 am est.

Dang. I figured the wrong way and tried to sleep through the update.
Maybe SL will be better for it. Oh yeah it’ll be better!

‘New client software will be required to access the Grid after the update’.
Is it downloadable before 12noon PST? Otherwise there will be one hell of a rush at that time…

Nice to get an update again.
Last week an downgrade, now an update. keeps going on.
I read the list of chanches and things, but what i realy miss is an faster server system that sould fix teh lag.
dont matther where you come its allways lag when there are to many people. that would be the major fix.
The things i see here are for me less important fixes. and most times when something i supdated it has new bugs. so lets hope the list of bugs will stay tiny.
But please get faster servers and fix the lag!
Another thing that can a huge fix,
many of us have a paypal account without a creditcard.
They can not buy L$ becouse you need an paypal account witj creditcard on it. fix that too if you allready busy with fixes.

I’m just glad that the gestures are now saved correctly. Ironically, I haven’t been able to lol with my own voice now for weeks. :)).

Okay here are just few things…
Most of the updates are not something I pay attention to or don’t know what they actually are. The things I would love to see fixed are the teleporting issue where your attachments end up in your crotch or you shrink/other people are shrunk to you, water not being where it is supposed to be, and clothing displaying properly without having to go to appearance every time.
As for the clock thing, most of the world except the US has grown up knowing GMT, but it isn’t something they really teach here in the US. Nor do we use a 24hr clock. It does not make us idiots or ignorant for not knowing. If it isn’t in the schools it isn’t taught and then you don’t know. Stop with the country bashing before you start getting people making poor jokes about the middle east, the UK or France because most Americans are ready to sling mud with little effort.
I think as far as the clock goes that if you had a dual displace of SL time and local time people would be happy with that. Since most everything is in SL time anyway. I never see anything posted in anything but SL time so what’s the big deal.
It’s always a downer when they are doing the updates cause we have to catch up on work, cleaning, and living in the real world, but this too shall pass. I think the big thing is people thinking the grid will only be down 5 hours and ends up being 16. I crash more with every update they do so I don’t really look forward to the updates myself.
One thing that I really really really would love to see, so that I have a desire to upgrade to a paid account…. Don’t let people who have already bought a first land plot buy a first land plot. I refuse to upgrade since I am not running a store or making anything while I can’t even buy a first land plot without some real estate gamer snatching the plot and reselling it at 10 times what it really is worth. Someone do something about that, make first land plots available for resale AFTER it’s been bought as actual first land to someone who hasn’t bought land before.

It is such a shame you come on this blog and hear remarks about normal whiny Ameicans. You don’t have to use this forum for racial slurs. This American would appreciate it to stop!!
January 17th, 2007 at 7:23 AM
damned if you do, damned if you don’t, Well I appreciate your efforts in making it better. Keep up the good work!! My only suggestion is to make your Inventory items available through some other way when offline. Lord knows how bad I need to organize my closet. Maybe even a way to slide the window upwards or downwards when dragging items from the bottom of the list to the top folders.
Anyways, xoxo thank you

I hope sl get all of this fix and things go well, good luck guys!!!your doing a great job!!:) Ok for all you american bsher! The only people i see whining right now is you! and beside if it wasn’nt for the americans most of you would be hitler lovers right now!!! so stop with the bashing. and get over it.

Good luck Lindens!
Great set of fixes, I’m sure. Could I maybe request the pants fix in the next update? Please?
It’s the only one I’ve been waiting for; my girlfriend’s normal greeting to me now is “I love you baby.. Fix your pants”.. sigh
Oh, but the IM fix is a good ‘un too - it will indeed stop me waiting for the slow typers…

Since they are based in California, USA, the 7am-12pm PST timeframe probably coincides with their work schedule. To do it any other time would mean they either have to change their working hours or pay extra to properly staff themselves for the upgrade. Don’t expect that to happen. They also mentioned awhile back that one of the upcomming upgrades was supposed to allow them to upgrade parts of the grid at a time without having to take down the whole thing. Once that happens, the upgrade impact should be minimal.

@Ashrilyn Hayashida:
Yes, enabling sim-caps means we’ll start to use TCP for some data transport rather than just UDP.
(We don’t want to use every bit of jargon in every post, but sim-caps works over HTTP which works over TCP, so if you see any of those terms we’re talking about non-UDP based transport for some things)
