Update on Today’s Second Life Maintenance [Complete!]
Wednesday, January 10th, 2007 at 7:37 AM by: Joshua Linden[Update: 11:40am PST - we're open! Thanks for everyone's patience]
Summary: We’re scaling back today’s release to a 1.13.1 server patch and required operational work. The release of 1.13.2 will be delayed.
Long version: During continued testing of 1.13.2 on the Beta Test Grid we saw some issues with region crossings and attachments which made us suspect that some of the bug fixes in 1.13.2 may have made some existing open bugs much worse. Rather than risk any detrimental effects to the main grid we decided to postpone the update to the 1.13.2 code base.
We still need a full release window today to get out some server patches to improve the database performance under load, and down time for operational work including adding some additional bandwidth between our server co-location facilities.
There will be no viewer update required for today’s update.

Thanks for keeping every one alert, il be checking back here every 5 minutes, also living in the UK is confusing with the diffrent times, but il soon get used to it.

The scaleback sounds like a prudent decision. Thank you for the update.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:44 AM
Great to see your delaying instead of pushing. Keep up the great work. We all look forward to logging in earlier than expected.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:45 AM
You guys are always working to make this a better place. I speak for many when I say Thanks and we appreciate your hard work.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:46 AM
Thank you for being cautious and delaying this update.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:46 AM
OK, thanks for the update.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:46 AM
Mmm, good call. Let’s not make things worse
January 10th, 2007 at 7:47 AM
Best of luck, LL. Hopefully it will go smoothly, and delaying the release because of anticipated problems was a good move. It shows the nay-sayers that you ARE doing testing before releasing. I see nothing wrong with this decision.
(But I am sure that Broccoli and Usagi do, so… open fire!)
January 10th, 2007 at 7:48 AM
As usual no news good news… we had a news
January 10th, 2007 at 7:49 AM
I thank you very much for the testing you do. I know there are some companies out there that would just release the patch and make a new one to fix the old one.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:49 AM
Yes, I concur… a little less trubulence is great, even at the cost some enhancement.
Thank you
January 10th, 2007 at 7:49 AM
im happy your delaying this what im wondering is will this change the estimated down time?
January 10th, 2007 at 7:50 AM
I just wanted to make a suggestion. The newbies are rediculous….they are congesting things and causing crashes. You are not making money off fo them because they have no account. I know this becasue they have no money. I think a 30 day free trial is sufficiant. But to allow them to continue to play for free is unfair to those who play the game. Our bunsiness is suffering and we have terriable lag issues and crash issues, due to the numerous free accounts.
I would suggest that you give them 1 month free and get them reeled in and then start charging them……….they cant even buy land for christ sakes.

January 10th, 2007 at 7:51 AM
Damn, I was hoping for the new client/servers, a lot of bugs fixed I would have liked to see. Oh well, life happens. Being a server admin myself, I can understand some changes not being done for security, bug fixing or other reasons. You folks look like you care about what’s going on….
On another note, I see people complaining here and in-world about this or that… people are people, gotta take them one by one. At least, on the whole, you seem to at least try to be responsive, which is a good thing, IMO. I’d say more, but this is just a comment, not an article, hehe.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:52 AM
We have been growing so much - and we appreciate improvements - but will we see rounded updates rather than patches? it seems we have issues on patches and most times I must uninstall and reinstall the client in order to work right - I have invested in an entirely new system with a cadillac graphics card because I thought it was me but I still get crashes repeatedly. So I do not know what more I can do to improve my experience. All I can think is that it must be the client. is there a way to be sure?
January 10th, 2007 at 7:53 AM
I will echo the Thank You, and commend the LL team for their prudence.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:54 AM
Only highlights the importance for participating in beta testing and bug reporting.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:56 AM
Prudence? Sweet! Here’s hoping the grid gets back up in time for breakfast!
January 10th, 2007 at 7:56 AM
That’s great news! I’m in Europe, just got home from work and it’s almost 8 am, so I was banging my head on my desk thinking hard just *how* to spend my evening! lol
LindenLab is doing great! This indeed shows that they do test and if they find a (big) risk, they won’t proceed with the update. Good thing this delay. First make sure this new version does do what it’s supposed to.
Carry on lads! See you In-World soon!
Roger
January 10th, 2007 at 7:57 AM
I agree with Persephone Milk thanks for the caution and im really liking this more transparent LL’s and the new changes we are seeing
Hope the works goes ok and keep the coffee cups topped up

January 10th, 2007 at 7:58 AM
Yay! Does this mean that our attachments wont be stuck in our rears after crossing sims? =p
January 10th, 2007 at 7:59 AM
Hello Lindens…
Thanks for the update. I hope it will fix the problem i had today…. I logged on to check some messages. Then, i logged off. 4 Hours later i tried to log on, and guess what? I got the message that Secondlife was currently logging me out.. Wow.. That took over 4 hours to log off?! Actually… 2 hours later i was still logging out :/ So I guess i got stuck on the “Log off” action.
But, i have trust in you guys! I know you can fix it!! Yay! ……….
uh huh..
January 10th, 2007 at 8:02 AM
The wa keeps dieing and newbies are nakied every where can a linden please step in here please!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:03 AM
hopefully this update will reduce the lag and tele problems we have had for days now… i work in Bad girls and it’s realy unposible to do my escort job because of the lag and port problems

I count on you linde make me proud
And yea i agree it’s good to see that i pay linde money and they do there job i seen other MMO producers that just update without even testing there crap..the last thing i would want is to see my char get messed up or to loose any of my precius items so take ya time linde and make this stuff work.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:05 AM
Good job guys, finally you’re getting it together with letting us know what’s going on, and taking precautioanry messures towards problems that could cause even more problems. More of this please, keep it up. thx for the update.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:05 AM
“The wa keeps dieing and newbies are nakied every where can a linden please step in here please!”
I know these words, but this doesn’t make any sense.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:06 AM
Usagi… Please take notice.. SL is down for maintenance. That might cause what you are experiencing.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:08 AM
Trange actually… why are some ppl IN world during the update or maintenance, and why can’t we? lol

Appreciate the hard work in keeping our SL enjoyable.
Guess I’ll have to play in the first life for a few hours.

Azrael, Usagi Musashi rarely speaks coherently. I chalk it up to some new age Zen he/she must be practitioning.

January 10th, 2007 at 8:15 AM
w00t! Someone did a risk analysis! Way cool!
Thanks for delaying the changes in favor of stability.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:15 AM
Bravo…. this is a very mature and thoughtful step you have taken. But please do not mature too much and turn into old grey rusted board-room executives (no personal offense given or should be taken)….
January 10th, 2007 at 8:16 AM
Aw, come on, just give us the buggy update, the complainers won’t know what to do with themselves otherwise!
Kidding! Kidding!
I’m concerned about this naked noob thing though, since I see Usagi in-world almost daily, and am now fearful that one of my favorite places might be full of scary naked newbies!
Say it ain’t so!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:16 AM
Thanks for letting us know. I am quite new and may well have wandered around naked recently. Sorry if I have. Will these updates mean less crashing? I want to get to know SL properly and keep having to log out and in and out again.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:17 AM
All a bit last-minute, chaps. Maybe a Longer Version would include something like ‘Well, when we got out of bed and had a look at what happened overnight we finally realised the issues - which we’ve been looking at in Beta for some time - actually hadn’t gone away after all, so we might as well make some use of the downtime, and do it all properly later’. God knows what an upgrade to version 2.x.x will be like.
But it’s all good stuff, and nice to be told. Makes you want to teleport to Linden Labs and lend a hand, with a screwdriver, a mile of duct tape, and a pocket full of Keep-Calm pills.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:19 AM
Better to delay ,
Than to see even more Bug-Issues.
The bugs should be fixed first…
thenw when all is stable , then update.
Grtz ~Jay Zona~
January 10th, 2007 at 8:19 AM
Great job, I’d rather have a working database than a buggy patch day again
Thanks for letting us know.

According to analysts, there is a remarkable increase in output on all offices nationwide today. This matches with the observation, that the increase of work-output mainly happens on wednesdays, covering with scheduled down times of a well known online-application called Second Life, run by Linden Labs.
Linden Labs authorities were refusing any comment to this

January 10th, 2007 at 8:23 AM
great news! does this also mean the grid closure will be any significant amount of time less than 5 hours?
January 10th, 2007 at 8:24 AM
I noticed ever since the last update that clothes look rather shall i say “Sissy” .
in otherwords on our screens our pants look fine, like mine are baggy. but in other peoples views the pants are really tight and hugging our legs. this is really bothering me i have no clue why but anybody have any idea when this bug will be fixed?
January 10th, 2007 at 8:25 AM
Those poor naked newbies will be like everyone else, and one day mature into fine upstanding SL residents. Maybe the ones that were mentioned skipped that lesson on the Island and nobody has told them how to dress…
January 10th, 2007 at 8:26 AM
LOL Nanda that’s too funny! LAMO
January 10th, 2007 at 8:27 AM
Great news, I didn’t have to run around in my chicken suit earlier yelling, “The sky is falling!” I did it anyway cause it’s funny and all. Good work on delaying the pending bug troubles. Kudos Linden Labs!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:27 AM
Good call. 1.13.2 was not ready for prime time. The Client > Character > Flush Animations crash is still present in it as well.
Thanks for maybe doing the harder thing and not pushing this.

January 10th, 2007 at 8:29 AM
The best new feature is only useful if SL is stable. Thanks for putting stability over features.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:29 AM
this sucks!!! on my day off for 4 hours!! ridiculous!! but thanks for the update…lol
January 10th, 2007 at 8:31 AM
Good news. Stability should always be the primary concern. Thanks… Can’t wait to get back to SL!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:33 AM
yeah what is with that? i think it is because it is not a priority to load other ppls clothing first b4 eevrything else is loaded. although it did suck when i was entered in best dressed man contest to think i was wearing tight pants and i was so goofy looking? well i did still win but comon i dont put pants on unless both me legs go into one side :-O ANYHOW KUDOS TO LINDENS FOR SUCH A WISE CHOICE TODAY
January 10th, 2007 at 8:34 AM
LOL @ Nanda. Only thing this ruined for me today was my camping spree.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:35 AM
Good to hear that LL keeps an eye on the quality of their service. Thx for the delay. Make it bugfree and then release it’s the better way.

January 10th, 2007 at 8:35 AM
Great . Better this then a failure like last time. Good job this time and Good luck.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:35 AM
It’s tough to hold back on a new release when your community members are enthusiastically and impatiently demanding MORE, BETTER, FASTER, but in the long run it’s best not to rush. Second Life is (IMHO) the best MMORG on the market, and your dream of providing a new paradigm for all forms of electronic communication is attainable. Persistence and patience is the key.
Keep up the good work!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:37 AM
i try too many online simulations and rpg games before, im a real player.. but you guys, you are a real pioneers… your work is realy important and detailed than other providers. because this is the first realistic life simulation on the net with complete 3d environment (not in my computer like warcraft) so, you need to clear your way on your own.
I know this is not easy. maybe some people dont respect you enough for this amazing job. but i can understand you, and i can believe you. also i have too many friends on inworld, they are thinking like me.
Second life is perfect place for understand to meaning of real life.. just keep up your good work and many thanks for always keep informed us…
congratulations and greetings from Turkey….
January 10th, 2007 at 8:37 AM

January 10th, 2007 at 8:40 AM
Good call, you aren’t going anywhere and neither are we. Updates can always wait till they are bug free.
I am concerned about this naked nuub thing as that nuub skin is kinda horrid…

Fallout Tactics says: “on our screens our pants look fine, like mine are baggy. but in other peoples views the pants are really tight and hugging our legs. this is really bothering me”
One fellow member named it “Shakespeare Pants Bug” and I rolled on the floor laughing.
Yes, I sincerely hope this one and some other annoying bugs are going to be solved with this update, like:
- Disappearing water (so you need to go World->Region & Estate after every teleport)
- Attachments like shoes are put on to your buns after teleporting somewhere (so you need to detach and reattach them one by one)
- A weird thing I call “Twisted Knees Syndrome” - your avatar stands with “impossibly” twisted knees on the ground
- Another one I call “Walking In Void”, where your avatar keeps walking and walking beyond your control, mostly sinking into ground
I sincerely wish you good luck and success Lindens, you are dealing with really tough job and handling it as smoothly as possible. I believe, when you achieve in-world stability, “Second Life boom” will go up to a higher level.
Thanks for the update on this.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:43 AM
WOOT! yeah man u nialed that topic i think you should be able to presspriority of appearence up to the top of the list when not in an overcrowded situation after all whats the point of buying all the clothes if you look like crap?!?!

“Full release window” means, I assume, we can expect the grid up at noon SLT? Thanks.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:46 AM
I’m very happy to hear that LL is taking a step like this, even though it means the 1.13.2 upate will most likely be inconveniently timed, I’d rather have it so if it means a more stable release rather than a super buggy one. I certainy hope the no-clothes rendering bug gets fixed in the next version but even if not, keep up the good work LL so that we may continue to pour money into your pockets in exchange for virtual monies.. okay I’m just rambling. byebye!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:47 AM
If your bored add synysterpyro.. lets see if i can do this right without messin things up.. XD
January 10th, 2007 at 8:47 AM
Nooooo surely not for the usual *full* update time? I hope that you hold off the actual update then, as really, it’s too much downtime.
Otherwise, keep workin’ LLs and drink plenty of tea.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:49 AM
I can only re-iterate what other have said, thank you for taking a cold hard look at the update before releasing it to the SL public.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:49 AM
For once I agree with you guys! Thanks LL, it makes us users feel like we’re being heard.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:50 AM

http://www.secondlife.com seems to now point to the Grid Status page. Okay, no worries, you’re poking at the site for a bit as well as banging on the grid. The Grid Status page doesn’t seem to have links to the Blog or Forum areas, though, so once you get there, you’re kinda stuck unless you dig through your history or some such. Links to the blog/forum might make a nice addition to the grid status page.
/me wishes LLs the best of luck and a smooth upgrade day.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:55 AM
I concur with Jachanu Alexandre. I also want to compliment the staff of linden for its goal to inform people and residents on what is going on in their organisation and with what and how they encounter issues. It is strenght to be able to let people know about the ins and outs *and negs* of their development. Best regards from The Netherlands
January 10th, 2007 at 8:56 AM
Keep the good work up guys!!! Great
January 10th, 2007 at 9:00 AM
I miss the monolith “while we bang on things” grid apes. Doesn’t seem like a real upgrade without them.

Good job, LL

Joshua Linden: “During continued testing of 1.13.2 on the Beta Test Grid we saw some issues with region crossings and attachments which made us suspect that some of the bug fixes in 1.13.2 may have made some existing open bugs much worse.”
This region-crossing problem isn’t a new thing: I have had problems crossing region borders for about two weeks now. Problem is that when I enter another region (flying), I idle/lag flying into the region. After a few seconds my avie becomes responsive again and I end up right across the region border and not where I saw my avie last. Sometimes this also happens in a way that I’m idle-flying across an entire region, enter the next while I wasn’t even active on the last and keep on flying. The only way to recover from this is to relog.
Oh and this is not bandwidth-related: I’m on a 20mbps both ways connection…
Readon I made this whole comment? The Lindens might think they have found a new problem which was already there.
I would like to see this question from Elsewhere Essex answered: “does this also mean the grid closure will be any significant amount of time less than 5 hours?”
Greetings and good luck!
Roger Gaspara
January 10th, 2007 at 9:05 AM
Thanks for making SL the best out there! You guys do a great job. Take your time and so what you need to do thanks SL!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:08 AM
Roger Gaspara: I would like to see this question from Elsewhere Essex answered: “does this also mean the grid closure will be any significant amount of time less than 5 hours?”
This was answered in the post: We still need a full release window today to get out some server patches to improve the database performance under load, and down time for operational work including adding some additional bandwidth between our server co-location facilities.
January 10th, 2007 at 9:09 AM
In addition to the Avatar problems above, I have had trouble building. I move a prim, then seconds later it moves halfway back to where it was. Same thing for resizing too. I have even lost some inventory, it’s just not there anymore. If this downtime fixes that it’s more than welcome!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:10 AM
Thanks for the translation, Azrael. “Full release window” is jargon for “all five hours”. You answered my question.
January 10th, 2007 at 9:10 AM
The rollback Haiku:
Update is here…wait!
Update hosed, SL still down.
Lindens need beer break.
January 10th, 2007 at 9:11 AM
yuh.. about the promised fixes after the update.. I’ve heard that before, like with the teleport issue. Well, all I can say is that it wasn’t solved at all. Just like some other issues from the past. I really, really hope that it wil be solved this time. And umm.. Hell yeah!! The noobs’re havin’ a nude beach party :-)) hehehehe. Let’s make pic of them and blackmail’em
(Kidding ofcourse)

its good that u are trying to fix it but it relly gets on my nurs wen i come home form work
January 10th, 2007 at 9:17 AM
Playing SL now is like trying to solve a mystery to figure out how to get around the bugs.
do this if your clothes don’t show
do this if your hair is hovering around your ass
do this if you’re stuck in an animation
do this if your water doesn’t show up
do this if your money doesn’t show up… and so on,
that’s how you separate the noobs from the oldies: figuring out the workarounds is the way you get good at playing the game (itsnotagame)
that said…
/me is trembling, waiting for the grid to return.
I’m psyche_sl on yahoo chat, if you’ve got the shakes too!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:17 AM
Thanks for the update. It’s much appreciated.
January 10th, 2007 at 9:24 AM
Hiya Boss!!!! Happy to see your Haikus again!!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:25 AM
So the grid is down, and so is our ability to log into the SL website? I cannot log in to my account at all, or view the Forums, check my transactions for the past month, nothing. I’ve never seen Second Life so *completely* offline before. Funny that the blog is still running though, a definite change from the early days of the blog
Open Source rocks, delaying a “not ready for prime time” update is a good thing, you guys are getting better
Keep it up!!!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:27 AM
First, as much as I have been irritated with the way Beta Grid has been handled lately, and previously stated I had abandoned using it, I find I can not in good conscience not help in finding bugs and testing the new relases. If I am not part of the solution…..
I have posted the following in Bug Reports, but thought would post here so others may try and replicate. Version 1.13.2(5) Beta Grid
Edit Drag Window: Behavior change. When using the drag window to select a sub group of linked prims in an object, no prims are selected unless the root prim is contained in the window, at which time only the root prim is selected. Would expect any prims within the window (or whose center is within the window) to be selected.
Failure of parcel to recognize Group change: When attempting to create an object on land not owned by me, but set to a group to which I belong (but was not active), received error stating now allowed. Changed group to correct group for parcel, still received error. Moved off of parcel and returned - error cleared and was allowed to create object. Tried this several times to make sure it was a bug and not just timing. If group is changed at any time to group other than that which parcel is set to, this change is recognized and creation permission is denied.
I would like to suggest that all group memberships be recognized, whether active or not. This would be a big help to owners of parcels set to groups, who have multiple group memberships.
Thanks
DRD

Ok, we all say its better first set it up all good, before release. but what si this mean here. do we have to download something ? or can we just come in again with the download we now have, just playing for a week now, so whhen i need to have a other version, i dont know hwere to get it.
Sorry for this stupid question.
January 10th, 2007 at 9:27 AM
Hrmmmmm, I am wondering with theis patch fix if sl is going to release more First Land as it is a hot subject… I just upgraded my account so that i can buy first land and it seems to me that LL is not letting the first land out the way they used to, and i do not think its because they do not have means to do so as i stroll thru sl i see many parcels the Gov Linden has on hold….Any time frame for the first land are is it a lost cause and a waste of me having the prem account.
thanks The First land for the Landless.

Had a bad crashed that resulted in a complete system crash inthe beta game!!!!!!!! The sl cleint resourse is really loading up the cashe memory . looks like a problem!!!!!!!!!

Great update yes. But where is answer to:

not to be Bi***y or anything.but do you suppose…when ya shut down SL and state a certain time….that you don’t shut her down 10 minutes before that? i am sure that the project i was working to complete is long gone….
on another note…..love the cautious approach to the update…

Thanks for your work Lindens! Hope this way you can reduce some server side problems without introducing new client problems.
But hell what should I do now while SL is offline? *sigh*
while true; do
wget -q -O - “http://secondlife.com/status/” |grep “Second Life is Open” >/dev/null &sleep 60

Thank you LL Tech’s for being cautious and watching for these unresolved region crossings and attachment issues. Linden Labs is/are “real pioneers” in this area of gaming. Daily the gird is evolving with primitives and new updated scripts, along with an influx of avatars that range from different forms and abilities. Not only are the Tech’s correcting, improving and developing SL on a constant basis they are trying to resolve any issues brought about by the general public due to scripting or overloading in different areas of the sims. What an amazing and adventurous creation we have before us. Thanks to the creative minds of the Engineers, Technicians, Designers, and Builders of SecondLife. I applaud all of you!!!

I don´t know if this has anything to do with this at all, but yesterday SL broke down on me so I had to log off. When I tried to relog, it told me that I had to wait for first 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, then another 15 minutes before I would be able to relog again. When I finally could relog I noticed that several attachments at my Avatars body was missing, so I went inside my inventory to reattach them again. I found them, but when I tried to wear them I got a notice that they were missing in the database… Is this something that has happened to others as well, and is it connected with this???

I love the monkey picture i even took a screen grab a few weeks ago
January 10th, 2007 at 9:41 AM
Well, it maybe because of all of the constant “you can be a Linden” recruiting, finally someone was hired that understands good engineering practices.
Update Delay: Without any reasonable failback plan, please continue this new (hard learned) trend towards caution.
Open source: In general the only ones publicly finding fault with this decision are those who actually do not have the technical background to support commenting at all.
Thanks for listening

Which Linden is who?!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:42 AM
Joshua Babe!!!!! Can’t wait to get back in! Glad to see you was looking for you!
January 10th, 2007 at 9:43 AM
hmmm….I personally think you guys should change your normal update hours. Instead of the usual 7am to 12noon pst they should be something like 9pm to 2am pst. Meaning when im sleeping rather than right in the middle of the 8 hours i have daily to play the game. As they are, update days always mean no play.
Just a thought.:-p
