All I have to say is, LOTS of bugfixes!
January 9th, 2007 at 4:12 PM
Is one of the “Fixed several client crashes” the one where you double click on textures in your inventory and it crashes the client? This one is severely annoying to deal with.
January 9th, 2007 at 4:45 PM
Great to see an update with primarily bug fixes instead of enhancements/new features. Thank you!
Hopefully this bodes well for a change from the approach of making new shiny toys without first making the existing toys work reliably!
Knowing that there will be no load-testing of this update before it is deployed still makes me chew off all my fingernails though. It is a huge roll-of-the dice to deploy something tested only with few dozen (at most) concurrent logins onto a grid which is now seeing 20,000 concurrent logins on a nightly basis.
Hold your breath and hope for the best everybody!
January 9th, 2007 at 4:51 PM
“Ctrl+Arrow keys now move insertion point a word at a time in text fields”
That one alone is worth 5+ hours of downtime…. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
January 9th, 2007 at 4:52 PM
What about timelines for proposals and other things that make SL inherently better for everyone (new and old).
i.e. Disseminating SL past information that should be searchable and known to all…

That’s not quite accurate. Remember when the grid shut down (ahem - one of the times) last week or so? There were almost 500 people on the beta grid- not bad, considering there’s only about 25 regions there. This is the release we’ll be seeing tomorrow. It was smooth - not incredibly smooth, since everyone who was entering it started in the same region, but better than I feared. It was only about an hour or so, but it /was/ load-tested :>

I wish that you Fix the problem with Lag,I believe the lag problem is getting on every ones nerves.
AlphaDraco, your request doesn’t mean anything. There is more than one kind of lag. There is client side lag, there is server side lag (reductions in FPS), there is lag we see due to packet loss. There is lag that really bad builders create (people who use too many twisted toruses).
There isn’t one problem, and some of the lag is our fault. Some of it is LL’s fault. Fixing one source of lag leaves tons of other problems.
But you know what? I bought a new computer, and I honestly haven’t been lagged in months.
I highly recommend the Sony VAIO gaming laptops. They are really sweet.
January 9th, 2007 at 8:24 PM
I haven’t experieced any sort of “lag” in the traditional sense for quite some time now- by that, I mean network issues like excessive ping times, packet loss, and so on. Indeed, I haven’t really been impacted much by the ongoing database woes, so I guess I’ve been lucky.
That said, I /have/ been noticing time dilation issues on more than a few sims. Hopefully this will resolve some of those.
Take care, and good luck, Lindens!

* Restored ability to use Alt to control camera, while still enabling menu access
** Holding down Alt and pressing WASD (etc) moves the camera
** Tapping Alt places focus on the menus
Thank you for implementing this and so quickly. When the change to the ALT behavior went live I posted on the release notes about it and suggested this is a possible solution to allow us WASD fans to keep our old functionality and still allow the new functionality to work for those who wanted it. I’m happy to see it made it in within a single release.
Also a nice long list of bugfixes too which is always nice to see.
January 9th, 2007 at 10:05 PM
I have been crashing when I empty trash for months. I have reported the bug and reinstalled the game several times and then installed Windows again. Hopefully that will be fixed
January 9th, 2007 at 10:47 PM
One of the biggest buggy things right now is “Chat Lag”. Messages in public chat arriving many seconds after sending, arriving out of order and the typing animation long after you finish typing.
January 9th, 2007 at 11:14 PM
* Gesture steps now save correctly
Thank god, that was really, really necessary!
This update looks great!
January 9th, 2007 at 11:46 PM
I still can’t figure out for the life of me where all my group deeded objects went to after the system returned them? Any help at all would be appriciated.
… damn griefers …
January 9th, 2007 at 11:53 PM
I don`t see the Japanese client fix! OH BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 10th, 2007 at 12:12 AM
Prims built “on the ground” are by default “No Mod, No Copy, Yes Transfer”. I add this fact into the comments here, so people will understand that the sandboxes WILL return these prims to you, rather than deleteing them. (When I read the above, I was very concerned for a moment.. I don’t like the idea of having objects DELETED by any automated process).
I am a bit concerned however.. that if someone has a project that has previously been made copyable.. and drags it out of their inventory to work on it.. Even if they spend hours making changes to it, the sandboxes now will elect to DELETE it rather then just return it. So even though an object is set as copyable, it’s VERY possible for this to be the ONLY copy in existence.

>>Gesture steps now save correctly
January 10th, 2007 at 12:37 AM
somehow my comment got broken … again
I´m very happy to see the bug “Gesture steps now save correctly” as fixed. Thank you !
January 10th, 2007 at 12:38 AM
@Winter: The permissions you refer to are “next owner” permissions. The creator and owner of a newly rezed prim has all permissions. If current owner permissions is how the sandbox region will decide to return or delete and item, then a freshly rezed prim will be deleted. Your concern is merited. This one was not thought trough.
January 10th, 2007 at 12:41 AM
wonders how the decide on what is important and how its thought about…………….shakeshead….where is the common sence in thse last bug fixes.
January 10th, 2007 at 12:55 AM
@Usagi: I think it wise to ask for perfection from others only when one has achieved it for one’s self.
You’re among those who’s said they need to concentrate on bug fixes. Here they have. When will it be enough?
January 10th, 2007 at 12:58 AM
I too Would Like To Say Thank You For More bug Fixes Then Features….Would Rather Have Properly Functioning Functions Then Bugged Flashy New Ones Anyday Im Sure Im Not The Only One……Now If They Dont Create Ten New New Bugs For Everyone Thats Fixed
Never The Less Wtg Lindens On The “Fixes”
January 10th, 2007 at 1:03 AM
OH and the cloak… i hope this is fixed …one has themsleves cloaked …but when one loggs on and off ….guess who is revealed they have been online..the cloake thingy really doesnt work then eh??? now aint that a slap in the face to others who think that your actually doing rl stuff. Hummmmmpppffff ….they have me cloaked!!! they say…huummpppppffff..
January 10th, 2007 at 1:35 AM
Good luck. And thank you for fixing the bugs and restoring the Alt-WASD function
January 10th, 2007 at 2:33 AM
I would be happier if all the prims were returned from the sandbox, rather than having my modified copy being deleted by the system.
If its returned than I can decide if I want to delete it from my lost and found.
January 10th, 2007 at 3:19 AM
Fixed a bug for buying land?
Who buys land anymore? LOL
It’s way too expensive. I remember the days back when I bought land. I was mostly concerned with my sunset views and my future neighbors and how thier yards/builds would add/detract from my yard.
And even then, if things got ugly or laggy, I could easily pack up, sell my land for what I payed for it, and go get another piece…thats part of the beauty of SL….well, WAS part of the beauty.
Now, all I can do is look for anything less than 15L/m…its absolutely insane. Just 6 months ago, I could buy beachfront property for that price.
ahhh….I digress…sorry…whenever I see anything about land I snap.
:-/

“Ctrl+Arrow keys now move insertion point a word at a time in text fields”
I almost cried when I saw this
thankyouthankyouthankyou. I’m the kind of guy that writes a sentence and then goes back and forth fixing typos before sending (not english native, sorry) So this lets me write much better and faster, and keeps my fingers away from RSI
Oh, and the BETA tag for some languages is also quite useful
I was thinking of rounding up a few volunteers and finish the spanish translation of the XML language files that are installed with the viewer, and share them unofficially (caveat emptor, do a backup, etc.), but I guess we can wait until they go out of beta.

“@Usagi: I think it wise to ask for perfection from others only when one has achieved it for one’s self.”
I think one shall talk abou themselves here before remarking like that…………..
When I see fixes that are occuring in the every day game I will same its enough. But come on there are some thing i have not incountered……..
January 10th, 2007 at 4:55 AM
Completely unrelated to this update, but a small request with regards to website functionality. Can we have a simple “Current time in SL” (PST time) display in the sidebar of the website? Just a small ticker in javascript, initialized when pageload or something like that, doesn’t even need to be very accurate.
Many SL users come from outside SL’s timezone and for these it’s somewhat inconvenient to not have a reference time to quickly calculate when events occur in their own timezones. The AM/PM clock is pretty english-centric as it is, but right now it’s tricky to check exactly when outages (such as the ones with releasing new versions like in this blog post) will occur.
Ideally the site would allow for timezone compensation for all displayed times, perhaps based on IP look-ups or user configuration, but I gather that would be a far more difficult task.

*Looks at the list of fixed bugs*
*shakes head in disappointment*
I wonder if I live to the day when they fix the missing water bug…

You have to have a seperate link without the -login option.
This bug has been around for awhile.
>”tapping ALT key brings up menus”
This might get anoying at times, we will see.
January 10th, 2007 at 6:43 AM
Oh no still!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 10th, 2007 at 6:48 AM
Well I am in beta now..keep trying
January 10th, 2007 at 6:51 AM
Yay! I use alt cam all the time and this was making it very hard to view things while designing
* Restored ability to use Alt to control camera, while still enabling menu access
January 10th, 2007 at 6:59 AM
aww another update
i know it’s good for the server and all.. but i cant play for more than 5 hours and i hate that xD
go one with ur job !!
January 10th, 2007 at 6:59 AM
Why do I fear every update instead of welcome it….
January 10th, 2007 at 7:00 AM
i know :P:P maybe because u cant play for (mostly) a long time?
January 10th, 2007 at 7:01 AM
Thank you for the continous effort to improve Sl.
When do we get our linden water fix?
Just curious its been like three updates now.
…waiting patiently…..
January 10th, 2007 at 7:04 AM
not only should they fix all the bug problems but they should also allow you to block people as well, i have alot of people that try to talk to me that i do not care to talk to, but i cant seem to keep them from talking to me, even if i close out the window they continue to talk to me and after awhile it starts to get annoying, i am sure i am not the only person that would like this to be done, infact i know several others that would enjoy this as well.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:05 AM
will be on beta in 2 seconds again
January 10th, 2007 at 7:06 AM
And so it begins……….
Good luck Guys & gals

January 10th, 2007 at 7:06 AM
As much as I dislike not being able to use SL till 9pm (I’m in Europe) - I appreciate the fixes you’re making. I really don’t understand why new features are being developped and installed when there are still so many bugs to be fixed.
Good luck with the update LL - may the Grid be with you.
Lyn

@Genkido Ramaty
Put it in a proposal! & assign your votes to it.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:07 AM
@Genkido Ramaty:
- Have you tried the MUTE option?
- Wouldn’t you rather have bugs fixed than request new features?
Lyn
January 10th, 2007 at 7:14 AM
@LYN i have tried the mute option but that does not stop them from IMing you unless that is another bug to be fixed, i do not really care if the graphics are fixed, would rather like to see all the bug problems to be fixed, but that is asking for a mirical, i will just be happy with them fixing some bugs, i have been playing on the test grid and it is great, but still would like to see the bigger problems along with others fixed before they add new features and graphix.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:16 AM
Oh please try and fix the tight pants problem. The hair in the butt problem would be a good fix too. ( Runs away to find his bic razor )
January 10th, 2007 at 7:23 AM
wow … I might even become a regular complainer here
But I won’t complain this time. Apart from the TP’s and the search and the leggings and the missing water and the stale money transfers and so on … I can actually see a green line of improvement! Lag is WAY down (given the number of ppl logged in), audio streams work properly again, most TP’s (used to) work and if not there’s a way to work around it this time …
yup… SL still is sucky but it is very possible to do business now.
I also noticed a significant increase of useful blog posts
Are we witnessing the awakening of LL? Have they found new recourses? wow… just stay focussed, folks!
Recent news that SL would go open source frightened me a bit at first. But since I’m one of the complainers (Dutch … can”t help it) I can only imagine this will shut the complaining coders up
from now on I’ll have to bitch at all of you coders out there
Nutting but good thangs … I like what I see even though it’s far from perfect. Keep up the good work, LL! (Gawd … can’t believe I used that cliche)
Groetjes uit Holland ^^
January 10th, 2007 at 7:31 AM
ok will be back at 12 SLT to get back on, maybe, that is if we dont have to wait 30 minutes after secudual time again, lol
January 10th, 2007 at 7:34 AM
Woo, no more ‘Start Animation: 1′ in gestures. ^_^
January 10th, 2007 at 7:34 AM
Why cant the water-bug be fixed? Even if it might be a minor bug… its anyways really annoying and it gnaws on the Second Life expirience.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:41 AM
Great list of bug fixes. But please, please, please fix the water problem … it is just silly that this bug remains at this point.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:44 AM
Every bugfix is a welcome relief. It’s just a long time for not being alive…… I guess the Linden foolks dont keep their servers down longer then neccessary however.
January 10th, 2007 at 7:45 AM
Glad to see you addressing bug’s instead of adding new features / now will someone please fix cross border simm issues
January 10th, 2007 at 7:58 AM
I love SL! I’m soo addicted to the ‘real feeling’ of it. Thank you Lindens for making a place that is wonderful to play in and live in from my mundanities of workiness. (I know I’m blonde and probly used wrong words) anyway listen almost everything works great almost all the time and I wish there was a bug list *of like the top ten bugs*selecter button at the bottom of this page there with the downloads and stuff that I could just click to and know if I did something stupid or if I didn’t cuz I crashed after I took a picture and didn’t know that might happen and the list might of helped cuz I lost some blue eyes I bought and was trying out too from it all. Anyways well now you know what I was thinking and maybe it don’t matter but maybe it might help too
January 10th, 2007 at 8:12 AM
…personally, I think that LL deserve a kind of OSCAR, like the ones on movie industries, or a big thankfull hug from all the SL comunity…! Any kind of big, huge compliments and thanks to LL for having create Second Life…! I think people still did not understand the magnitude of this slice of Paradise…!
Technical aspects of it is just a little issue on a creation that is a form of art in itself… !!!
Any new updating is a gift that come from LL to us so that we will be able to control our dreams in a better and more efficent way.
Of course money is a big issue here too…! But money can’t change i single second of my incredible great time in this product of genius, imagination and high technology…!
…Much, much more to say about…!!!
So, thanks from the deep of my heart Linden guys….! Unbelievable great job…!
January 10th, 2007 at 8:30 AM
To fix the cross border sim issues, they need a Cray. Nothing less will do.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:56 AM
glad to see that the ALT-WASD functionality has returned…i just wish i could rid of the new functionality of the HOME key. tell me again, why does it reset my camera?
January 10th, 2007 at 9:37 AM
NO fix the water issue first! :/
January 10th, 2007 at 9:42 AM

Problem is there happy and the money still coming in by the droves for them or they check THERE records Etleast for us that made written complaints and reimburse us in one way shap or form…say if the dollar amount reached over a set amount of Linden Dollars…funny how Cory Linden laughed it all off at the end of the Hall meeting…” haha Im suprised somebody hasnt made a insurance agency of some kind yet” Well thx Cory your my hero always coming to the rescue. NOT!!

Is there any way the “* ‘Xyz is typing…’ no longer causes IM tab to flash” bugfix could be turned into an option? I’ve liked it flashing then as well.
January 10th, 2007 at 2:37 PM
What I would to see in all conversations about interface, and I cannot stress it enough, is the mention of what key on a Mac is the key Linden Labs refers to in a interface reference. We at large do not have an Alt key. Control and Option keys can be confusing and we have something called the Command key, Also I would like to see the Delete key work, like it does on every other piece of software I own.
Second Life is the most negligent in this documentation of any comapny that I know of that makes cross platform applications. I have heard, many times, including Philip Rosedale, Lindens Labs state that it is committed to the Mac platform and its community, its time to start acting like that is really the case.

Major issue with this new feature when you “single tap the Alt key” that enables the top of the screen menus. This makes building & looking around very annoying. Those of us that are skilled with using the zoom tool constantly don’t need the menus being selected by accident when only trying to zoom in & out. Another annoyance this creates is when you don’t realise that the menus have been selected after doing a lot of “hold Alt+Zoom”, when you try to walk you are selecting menus instead! SL has far too many issues to have a poorly mapped out keyboard control to add to the extensive list.. This MUST be removed, changed to a non-conflicting key combination, or a preference setting to enable/disable.
