Education projects on the Teen Grid - A Glimpse
Friday, December 29th, 2006 at 5:04 PM by: claudialindenI thought I’d slip in my introduction before the new year begins and initiate the education category of the Linden Lab blog. I’m on the Community Development team and have been responding to the flood of requests from educational organizations to start projects on the Teen Grid of Second Life. Over the past year, a very energetic educator community has developed on the Main Grid. Pathfinder Linden set up the Second Life Educators List (SLED) in October, 2005. Today, the SLED list is an effective vehicle for 1200+ members to share knowledge gained working with undergraduate and graduate students in Second Life.
The Teen Grid is… home to Teen Second Life, an oasis of creativity for teens only. In addition, Teen Grid provides a base for several innovative middle school and secondary school education projects trailblazing the use of Second Life with teens. Some of these are open to visitors from TSL, others are closed systems designed for their own students and staff. You can find links to several of these projects - from the high profile and very open Global Kids project to the teen library project Eye4You Alliance officially launching in January to the Pacific Rim Exchange project connecting students in Modesto, CA with students in Kyoto, Japan - on the SimTeach wiki hosted by educator Jeremy Kemp. I’ll be sharing glimpses of other Teen Grid projects in the months to come in the Second Opinion column aptly called “The Teen Grid.” The current column features an interview with two educators teaching programming to students on Campus: Teen Second Life. And check the November back issue of the Second Opinion for my Teen Grid column about Global Kids. (Pick up your inworld copies here.)
If you’d like to join the conversation with other educators working (and playing) with teens on the Teen Grid, sign up for the SLEDT email list (125+ members) and introduce yourself.

GO TEEN GRID!
December 29th, 2006 at 5:07 PM
Ah, a teen grid article. Hopefully its residents will post here - it would be nice to see some maturity for a change.
December 29th, 2006 at 5:21 PM
Should I pretend to be a teen so I can get on the (theoretically) more stable grid?
December 29th, 2006 at 5:22 PM
No one is allowed to login right now.
It helps to check http://www.secondlife.com/status if you have trouble logging in or are unable to TP and such. Normally that tells if there is a problem or maintance being done on one section.
December 29th, 2006 at 5:24 PM
Read the previous blog posts for your problem, star gemini — those are likely causes.
For nearly 12 hours last night, the grid was down due to some hardware failure.
December 29th, 2006 at 5:24 PM
Makes me laugh that Chronic posts about seeing some maturity and the *very* next post is an all caps flame!!!! Oh that was great… I am hoping that was a joke.
PS Go teen sl. Good for you guys making a safe place for our kids to enjoy!!
December 29th, 2006 at 5:25 PM
Superb work, Linden Lab ^_^. I’d love to see more Teen Grid involvement in the grander picture. Thanks for the post.
I’m sad to see there are aready many posts here about how ‘SecondLife doesn’t want to let me on’
I would have hoped it could all be kept on topic. So… Lets keep it on topic guys! ~_^
To Adults on the Main Grid: If you are interested in helping out on the Teen Grid, please, PLEASE sign up to help. It would be greatly appreciated to get more adult involvement helping to set a good example for all of us teens here on TG.
December 29th, 2006 at 5:26 PM
All I have to say is I am a contracter in SL that works for SL education communities. If you need something built or a place set up for your campus, etc. please contact me @ Iota_Studios@hotmail.com
December 29th, 2006 at 5:34 PM
I think its a great idea for us, pick up some knowledge while we’re doing our day to day thing.
December 29th, 2006 at 5:47 PM
*grins at Cape*
Seriously - in general, the replies of the TG residents are FAR more mature and thoughtful than those of the MG. It’s a refreshing change, and I do hope that more TG residents post in the blogs to try to inject some sanity into the otherwise insane screaming.
December 29th, 2006 at 6:14 PM
[...] Claudia Linden’s post on the official Linden blog shows the level of interest in SL from the education community. This was a focus of the report on the 7.30 Report last night, where a Sydney University group were utilising SL as a teaching tool. [...]
December 29th, 2006 at 6:31 PM
It is nice that LL is recognizing the teen grid, I personally feel that us teens are on the bottom of there list >.
December 29th, 2006 at 7:02 PM
I’m happy that Linden Labs is having things like the Global Kids contests and things like this. I hope you guys have more events/projects/etc. like the ones I listed above. Thanks!
December 29th, 2006 at 7:07 PM
i would love to help on the teen grid as my time allows, i’d like to encourage teens in realizing their dreams for their life and to encourge them to help others, and share my business knowledge in both.
go teens go, you’re at an amazing age, and you can do anything!
December 29th, 2006 at 7:32 PM
Teen Grid teen and proud of it
I have seen the Eye4You island and think that its a cool place…except I’m the only one there when I make my rare visits there. And I’ve heard a lot about Global Kids but am not a erson who is really into it. I’ll have to check more of it out…
December 29th, 2006 at 8:01 PM
Great job, Teen Grid, for making SL a more educational place.
Eye4YouAlliance still has no autoreturn, it should be fixed as soon as possible.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:19 PM
“Oasis of creativity.” Yeah. Sure. WHatever. The Teen Grid blows, let me tell you. You think you’ve got problems with griefers, lag, ugly buildings, sim crashings and unresponsive Lindens? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. We can’t even see the Lindens that are assigned to our grid.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:33 PM
Dur dur dur. Well, I guess its good that some of those guys are getting an education in SL, but I mean, are they gonna take advantage of it? I’m probably not looking at it the right way, or misunderstanding something, but most kids will probably just not care about it. If they do, Kudos. Dolus has a point, too. Seeing how alot of them think TSL “Blows”, they probably won’t support anything that has to do with LL. I personaly wouldn’t, not because I don’t want to help out LL, or to spite them, or whatever, but because I’m lazy.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:43 PM
I am currently in Teen Grid, and the lag is terrible, and another thing, We have lindens for our grid??? Wow I didn’t know that, I havn’t even seen one!! But on the bright side, it’s wonderfull here.
I have never been to an edu. program, but it’s nice that they get involved and want to include us. See you guys later.
December 29th, 2006 at 8:51 PM
I am glad to see the TG get some press on the blog! :: Waves hello to SL at large:: Info to MG residents the TG has about 100sims vs. your 3000 so it is a much smaller.
December 29th, 2006 at 9:13 PM
It’s not really an “education”, to be honest, if you’re referring to the islands that teens are allowed to be in, not the ones that are restricted to the school and their students/staff only.
In my honest opinion, the Global Kids project is overrated. The actual Teen Grid is overlooked. Whenever I see an article somewhere talking about the Teen Grid, it NEVER, ever talks about the actual Teen Grid. Instead, it goes on and on about Global Kids and how they’re “educating” teens. Yeah, we know a few facts about Darfur and child sex trafficking. But that’s pretty much it.
There you go. My two cents.
December 29th, 2006 at 10:48 PM
I agree this is a great thing to happen, but I would prefer to hear more about the Teen Grid proper alongside this, But keep this type of work up, it would do excellently to teach kids who cant get to school… I can see it being most useful in Australia for example, where kids are hundreds of miles away from their teacher. I know, ive a few friends there.
But still, I worry about them having a PC capable of handling SL, thus being able to make it to said class. Otherwise, its a great venture to try out in.
December 29th, 2006 at 11:19 PM
As great as GK is, we’d much like to hear about US, rather than more about how ‘awesome’ the ‘adults’ are doing on OUR grid.
.. The grid that stinks.
Smells of cheese.
ew.
But, yes, we can’t see what Lindens are online (and they’re usually not on..), there’s no proper support channels, extreme griefing, horrible products, buildings, scripts, economy, and everything is collapsing under our wittle toes.
o;
December 30th, 2006 at 12:17 AM
Getting a little off-topic this is about education in TSL not how bad us TGers think TSL is and how much it is or isn’t overlooked.
Anyways, I think the TG still hasn’t reached it potential for educational programs yet.
December 30th, 2006 at 12:17 AM
Thanks, writing piece for British Muslim mag trying to convince doubters in my community who dismiss SL as a “video game” - Teen grid will get a big mention.
December 30th, 2006 at 3:53 AM
while your all on about the SLED how about re-activating the 300 accounts you locked out due to someone sending in a bogus abuse report about these ppl as we were told why we were locked out and the one account named by a linden turned out to be legit
December 30th, 2006 at 6:41 AM
I’m sick of Global Kids, after I’ve scripted something something for them they change their mind, and i have to keep overhauling the system. Note to self: Never do charity work again
December 30th, 2006 at 6:46 AM
Dusy says, “we can’t see what Lindens are online (and they’re usually not on..), there’s no proper support channels, extreme griefing, horrible products, buildings, scripts, economy, and everything is collapsing under our wittle toes”.
Hmm, sounds just like a public school.
December 30th, 2006 at 7:42 AM
Woot Go Teen Grid ; D, Only problem is getting help from lindens they always show up offline. And the lindens that i msotly need (Guy Linden) - Land Guy , Doesn’t even show up in search so i gotta get a linden to im him to im me O.o
December 30th, 2006 at 7:46 AM
Well, in reality, the Teen Grid is exactly like the Main Grid, just smaller in proportion. Smaller land mass, less islands, less ugly buildings, less beautiful buildings, etc. It just maintains a ratio.
December 30th, 2006 at 8:00 AM
The Teen Grid… Is really a dull place… There are small groups of us trying to do things, but the mainland (especially the city sims) are full of parcels that need to be reset for sale, etc… We have 4 commercial private islands owned by our own residents, and then all the education sims. Also, griefers run amok in the sandboxes, less now due to the pushrestricts, but people always find a way.
-Gerald.
December 30th, 2006 at 9:30 AM
Well, looking at some of the posts from those on the TG, they sound a bit more mature. But the problem with ugly buildings and griefing is second nature to 13 year olds who play FPS all day. XD I’m not saying that all of you youngins’ are trouble, but it just looks less enforced over at the TG. I have heard great things about it, and I’ve seen some of the pictures on Snapzilla of it; alot of the buildings are indeed good looking, but there is alot of greifing. And in response to the “Public School” comment left by IntLibber, yes, it does sound like a public school, and David Gall has a point.. there is a ratio there, but greifing is down by alot on MG, really because of the death of the TCG and other little armys. But its really because of overall enforcement… I think that the TG could be enforced a bit better when it comes to greifing? I dunno if its already enforced by alot, but I’m just adding another dime to my pile of useless posts.
December 30th, 2006 at 9:48 AM
Yes, their is tons of ugly buildings, what we like to call noob land. It’s hard to buy linden owned land now because of that.
December 30th, 2006 at 12:24 PM
I personally get to see the Teen Grid daily, thanks to my little sister, and it IS a rougher place than the Main Grid. I would love to see some enforcement, and less grieving. She loves it there, and I have taught her some building tips transfered from the main grid, but I think incorporating Live Help, and LL offering some island universities for both Teens and Adults alike would really bring that place to life.
December 30th, 2006 at 12:37 PM
I have been getting quite a few requests from people off the teengrid (via other users on the main grid) who want to use the blogHUD to post from the TG. but does it even have an interactive mao, like the main grid verison used on blogHUD and the slurl.com maps?
I think they’d love it!
December 30th, 2006 at 1:25 PM
I think it would be better if we made our own.
Room for creativity and improvement.
December 30th, 2006 at 5:05 PM
*Blinks*
Have I missed something or are some of the teen posters missing it?
We can’t see when the MG Lindens are online either. At least, none of them have ever looked online to me, even though occasionally one has popped up in response to an IM.
If this is not the case, someone please let me know, because I see a big juicy bug report going through here ^_^
Of course, if you guys on the TG can’t even see which Lindens are meant to be assigned to your grid, so you can IM them offline or not, then that does suck
December 30th, 2006 at 5:54 PM
whoa, we’ve been metioned!
December 30th, 2006 at 5:57 PM
Hey, you know, maybe we should UPDATE THE WEBSITE! It’s been the same page for over a year! The person on it has REZUATED already!
December 30th, 2006 at 7:49 PM
She hasn’t, has she?
December 30th, 2006 at 8:36 PM
Well, really the teen grid’s residents (the ones you hear from anyway) are very mature. These are usually the ones who didn’t lie to get onto mg. All the immature ones are running around on the main grid ^^.
December 30th, 2006 at 10:15 PM
Not true. All of the mature teens on the Main Grid are the people you least expect to be teens.
They’re the ones that nobody suspects.
December 30th, 2006 at 10:26 PM
Its great to see alot of support for the TG. But sadly our grid isnt quite as stable as everyone seems to love to think. We have our problems.
Its really really great to see some more active lindens that are trying to educate the newbs on what is ok to do and what isnt good to do.
December 31st, 2006 at 6:42 AM
this might seem a little off topic.. and not sure it will be responded to or not..
but… while were on the subject of education.. I am aware there are some colleges that are offering courses in SL. Is there anyway someone who does not attend that college could find out what ciriculum they are offering and how one would find out about registration and the like. While I understand that many of these colleges have physical RL locations I would think it might be possible for someone not unlike myself to be able to eventually study from right here at my desk and recieve a degree in whatever.. Online Degrees are not new.. Online earned in SL degrees might be.
thanks for responces in advance
December 31st, 2006 at 8:09 AM
=[ im not happy because i have to wait a long time just for my account to upload and i ve been waiting for nealy six days and i can’t go online for some reason and iwould like to go online some day
December 31st, 2006 at 11:36 AM
What is the point of a second grid for teens when age verification is removed from the main grid? Marketing? Losing money? Distraction? Perhaps, the good of human kind! We must educate our kids by teaching them how to say “haw r u?”
(most of the people going on about Education work in that field and are here to milk a cow. moo)
Why not step back from the community building fantasy. Fire all the community lindens and all the marketing and spinner lindens, which would be more then half I think. Just make a stable game and let us build our own community. Marketing would be viral if this #@)(#$ game just worked.
December 31st, 2006 at 4:02 PM
Seems to me like Linden Lab should have held off the advertising with CNN, G4 Tech Television ( Most Advertising on the Hit-Show: Attack Of The Show)
and several networks with a viewer base greater than 5,000+.
The great cause of these database problems, client issues, and more are most likely from the server (database) overload caused by this high amount of advertising. It’s a suggestion that you request networks like NBC, G4, and MTV to keep Second Life (in general, both grids) on the low down.. Untill Linden Labs can get some better servers, and hardware coders.
With Respect,
- The infamous, Jaz.
December 31st, 2006 at 5:20 PM
How is it that every post manages to go off-topic like this?
This is a post about education projects on the teen grid - not to whine about adults getting more attention than teens on said grid, not to moan about database issues, griefers, ugly builds, the economy, sizes, SL’s instability, the website etc. While I agree this are all flaws of varying importance, this isn’t the place to whine about them.
The MG has well over 4,000 sims (4,369 last time I counted), while the TG has 93. If you plan to correct figures, correct correctly.
(Off-topic rant over - I wonder if it’ll be wiped out in moderation)
Now, (slightly) more usefully:
It it, in my opinion, great that there are educational projects going on the TG. While the open access ones, such as Global Kids, aren’t the best that they could be and certainly have a few people against their existence (see http://spotlight.macfound.org/main/entry/adults_role_online_teen_spaces/ and http://www.holymeatballs.org/2006/12/sl_something_is_brewing_on_the.html for details), they’re a good starting point and appear to be learning how they should go about things. (Hint: teenagers tend not to keep to deadlines or appointments, at least in SL)
Meanwhile, (as far as I can tell, due to the limited access) the inaccessible private islands and “Campus TSL” appear to be having success with education in a more recognisable format than one Global Kids use. But that’s just going by some of their blogs, since I can’t actually access them myself. They do seem to all share one consistent difficulty - SL servers acting up or going down when they need to use them - for one example, see http://pacificrimx.wordpress.com/2006/12/27/play-day-on-sl/ . It seems they had no issue getting around it simply by doing something slightly different, and that was just for fun anyway.
In any case, it’s good that these projects go on, and equally good to see that they go on relatively successfully.
In case you were wondering, I’m on the Teen Grid, and forgot what I was going to say in this comment after the Global Kids “paragraph.” (It isn’t really a paragraph as such. It’s too short.)

Jaz, what the $%#$% does that have to do with this topic.
>_>

Hi everyone! I amvery happyto see the education developments on the teen grid. I have recently set up an island on the adult grid called English village. There I have several classrooms educators can use to teach their classes. So, If you need a place equiped with several teaching tools, like a white board, laser pointer, chalkboard, chairs, a homework submitter and so on,
please contact me at: fire@eslteacherlink.co.kr - or visit my English Village
- oh - I have a website too: http://www.eslteacherlink.co.kr
cheers
and happy New Year!
January 1st, 2007 at 7:28 AM
Hah, I love the fact you guys link to the Teen SL website. Which hasn’t been updated in over a year. And the person on it hasn’t been in the public eye for many months now. Come on, LL, if you’re going to acknowledge the fact we exist after all, what effort does it take after that to make a few cosmetic changes to the website? :/
January 1st, 2007 at 9:08 AM
[...] Thanks Claudia for mentioning the Eye4You Alliance project on the Official Linden blog. Thank you to the teens that posted about the Island as well. We are always working on recruiting more adults so that someone is on the Island more often, and we have several interested teen builders as well that we will be contacting in the next few weeks. If you’re interested in helping, email us an application. (See post here). [...]

January 1st, 2007 at 7:38 PM

January 1st, 2007 at 7:38 PM
oh jose… rocks my socks - he is the new LL weatherman - unpredictible
January 1st, 2007 at 7:38 PM
While i DO tend to believe whatever issue they’re having is real, the skeptic in me cant help but think maybe it’s just technical problems theyre directly responsible for but they just keep inventing different reasons so that they won’t personally get too much heat. Kinda like my dog ate my homework, or my grandma died. in any case, disabling the comments in these ‘grid is down’ posts is useless since people will just flood the last one that has comments enabled anyway.
January 1st, 2007 at 7:39 PM
yea sounds good Dante

wait Dante when SL goes down … when isn;t down lately?
January 1st, 2007 at 7:53 PM
Well, perhaps i should offer the opinion and thinkings of every other Teen Grid member with A.D.D who hates school and education in general.
Id hate to sound rude but, most of us could care less about educational projects online. Perhaps if they were specialized to certain interests. Art classes, music classes. sort of extracurricular things, because i sure as heck dont want to log on to a game to learn algebra. you catch my drift? But from what ive read im assuming that by “Education” it means extracurricular and some other projects. i will be ale to further elaborate once actual groups step forth.
Thanks for your time,
Jon L

This sort of thing kills me. Hate it when the grid goes down during the few moments i can get on SL. Tough sh*t for us TGers, seeing as we dont have the luxury of being an adult and laying about all day. =P i’m kidding. (but really. dubayoo tee ef.)

folks, this is a network outage in Texas. You ain’t getting back into SL for a while, unless they’ve got some miracle workers out there (which is possible…
And no, this isn’t LL’s fault. But I’m sure someone will say so.
January 1st, 2007 at 8:10 PM
I don’t really care who’s fault it is, I just want my game back
I don’t like going to be at normal hours like normal people
January 1st, 2007 at 8:12 PM

January 1st, 2007 at 8:13 PM

January 1st, 2007 at 8:13 PM
Mercedes: oh, I agree with you. No doubt. But it’s long since time that Texas pay for its crimes, this not least among them.
January 1st, 2007 at 8:13 PM
Tell them to plug it back in
January 1st, 2007 at 8:21 PM
ok….whoever kicked over the toaster that is routing the so called “server farm” better run to their nearest K-Mart and get another one damnit
January 1st, 2007 at 8:26 PM

I am on the teen grid and i would like to help anyway i can wether it be helping out new people or building new places on second life. I don’t care i would just love to help out.
January 1st, 2007 at 8:29 PM
I think that there should be a back up grid incase this happens because the grid goes down to much
January 1st, 2007 at 8:42 PM
How many people has Texas put to sleep now??? How many of them were innocent??? Does this have anything to do with the problems SL is having with its servers??? Should I buy in bulk at Sams Club and save money??? How many woodchucks can a woodchuck pack into its peppers???
January 2nd, 2007 at 12:09 PM
hey Mercedes: come down, we all have to act normal some times!

I’m still trying to sign-up my second kid in Teen SL. Linden keeps looping me on the $9.95 one time fee page so it won’t process my credit card, I have a Paypal agreement setup and tried the infamous support route too. The latest is a survey they send me to ask about my experience with my support request. Ummmm… I never heard back in the first place. So get this, there’s me in SL, and my 2 kids I am trying to put in Teen SL. Linden says the 3rd account is over the limit so they want a $9.95 one time fee. Ok, I’ll nibble. Problem is the payment processing just keeps going around and around. It will never take my card and process it. Umm, that’s sustainable. I guess I should just setup a few dozen Alts.

Look. Lindens, stop acting like it is your right to educate the TG. Just because were teens doesn’t mean we need to be educated everywhere.
January 4th, 2007 at 2:48 PM
Daler, Paypal isn’t currently working on TG. We are looking at the problem. You can email blue@lindenlab.com - Blue will help you set up accounts for your teenagers.
