Login Issues - Presence

Friday, December 15th, 2006 at 4:45 PM by: Blue

Numerous residents are finding themselves unable to login after logging out due to a Presence issue where SL thinks they are still inworld. If you find yourself in this situation please wait at least 30 minutes before trying again. If it continues to be a problem, please contact customer support.

We are currently working to diagnose the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Its interesting that this came up. I was talking to a friend this morning when the pop-up said she was offline. And there she stood for at least a full minute before disappearing. How curious.

Why is there a “ghost” left back? There needs to be a way to kill the ghost avatar. IRC has had that functionality for ages. Couldn’t something like that be implemented?

  8. 8 Samantha Fuller Says:

I thought the sim was in suspusiously good shape for 35 people cant figure why my Av never rezed though

I’m glad to see this on the blog, since I started ringing about it more than an hour ago. Make with the blog posts, you guys! But aside from that, I’ve had an *excellent* customer service experience wrt this issue this evening.

I was able to get through by telephone from abroad using VoIP, which has become possible now that the LL phone system has been fixed. My call was answered much faster than the 6 minute stated waiting time. I got to listen to both Jack *and* Wilder Linden whilst on hold, which is an experience I’d be happy to pay premium rates for any old night. The Linden who took my call was both nice and informative, and the Linden who kicked my nun-clad butt off the grid so I could re-log is a a wonderful human being.

I am so, so, so pleased to see such excellent customer support around this issue. Very happy camper. Thanks guys!

  10. 10 Abbez Says:

Well everyday there is an issue, let’s just hope that some day, there will be at least 1 stable day.
Yep all team do a ggod job, but hmmmmmmmmmmmm we are paying customers, is SL really up to all the users that come here……

  11. 11 Alpha Zaius Says:

    @Sabrina

Thanks for stepping up and taking time to actually give a testimonial. I also have had great experiences with support and understanding downtimes. :) OH! And yes, I am a “paying customer”

  13. 13 Loki Ball Says:

Heres one of those issues where bloggers can choose their battles. Out of many issues recently this one isn’t a huge problem, if you have to wait 30 seconds, omg. lol. During that thirty seconds everyone can take that time to do some probably well needed maintanance that should be done daily anyway. Clean your computers cache, Delete your temporary internet files, run a quick clean program, or run an error scanning program, or clean out your registry. All of these things take about well umm 30 seconds each to do.. Any one of these, or all done regularly will not only make your computer run a bit smoother, but will probably lessen the amount of coughing and chuggin while in game when everything is clean. So on this little party killer I’d have to say as the members we can do our part with this one and take it as a moment of deserved rest, and a time to pamper our lovely little systems :D.

  14. 14 Loki Ball Says:

P.S. I know it said 30 minutes but myself and close friends haven’t experienced any lockouts for a period over 30 seconds. I did notice at one time that secondlife.exe was still on inside my taskmanager and just ended the task and was able to get right in. dunno if that still works. But none the less I haven’t ran into a period where its taken anything close to 30 minutes to get back in.

  15. 15 NickCA Dittmann Says:

    @Loki

Did all that over the last four hours trying to clear up the borkiness from this morning.

Removed unused programs, scanned for spyware, cleaned registry with three different programs, compacted registry, defragged disk. All this after uninstalling SL. Everything working great, even got the IE7 crash bug fixed (lol - by removing the Yahoo! stuff … there is a great partnership).

Then, with confidence that all bases were covered, a fresh install of SL. More borked than ever. Managed to get in once until SL cut my internet connection (yes, it’s fine) again, just like this morning. Tried to get back in, got stuck halfway through login, crashed network connection, SL, ICQ. After a bit the net connection came back up and I am able to use ICQ, IE, etc.

Hmmn. Wonder if I should spend another four hours at it … nah, not my problem.

We are 2000 or so light of how many should be logged in at this time, so I suspect that I am not the only one still having “issues.”

30 sec or 30 min wait does nada.

*sigh* … oh, yes, grats on the 2nd million :) … anyone for 3?

  16. 16 Sabrina Doolittle Says:

@Loki, I have called Support three times in 14 months. Believe me, this was not a “ZOMG I CAN’T LOG IN AFTER 30 SECONDS!” call. I am a very patient woman and always wait quietly for a problem I know is in hand to be dealt with. In this instance there were no blog posts about a grid issue so I assumed it was just me. It wasn’t.

The issue was that an av would log off, and then come back later to rejoin and get a “The system is logging you off. You cannot log in again until XX:XX” with XX:XX being a time five minutes the future. Wash, rinse, repeat. This went on for an hour even after a re-install.

As it turns out, the avs with this problem were never logged OFF in the first place, even though they had exited the game, and therefore couldn’t log back in again. A Linden had to reboot the sim my non-existant self was still in to log me off.

After Y number of people experienced the same problem, they did a rolling restart of the grid, clearing and reinstating all of the sims to resolve the problem for all the players experiencing it.

  17. 17 Jeffrey Galea Pirotta Says:

Well my problem is a bit different but strange nonetheless.

I do log in but cannot move about or see anyone or teleport or IM anyone

I am stuck inbetween two worlds and do not know what to do. ANy help.

Oh and by the way the system says that I have no clothes on, even though it says that other people would see them on me !!

Seems to be stuck in a temporal distortion !! Please call Captain Kirk or Jean Luke Picard of the Starship Enterprise !!! (In their place anyone from LindenLabs would do !)

  18. 18 Schizm Neutra Says:

Can anyone lend me a ‘Holy Ghost’ Avie?

    Merry Christmas anyway!

  20. 20 Shadow Engawa Says:

Are the people LL hire really working? Or do they work when they feel like. Problems like this continue with each and every update. Its as if they break something for everytime they have to update.

  21. 21 Maddie aquacade Says:

Yes will i have sat on the sign at Orientation island….and seen ghosts in the machine typing away four hours and have im’ed them only to find that they are onfline……haha

  22. 22 Wulfgang Schufang Says:

Installed the “optional” update last night. Hello LL! Why didn’t you tell us it was optional in the popup as you enter SL? It would be nice to have the previous release to reinstall when the optional one screws up. It seems as tho the problem is still lurking about - was fine for a while and now I can’t back in world. Hate new releases, tend to break things eventhough it fixes others.

  26. 26 Brutus Voss Says:

I dont know if this is the same problem, but when I log in, I can’t connect to any regions, it just get’s stuck half way through. So I click on it out of spite, and it doesnt respond.close, try again, rinse, repeat. nada. Go away for 3 hours and then come back again…still nada…what do I do?

  27. 27 Ian Says:

I registered about two months ago and I had my correct login details though they have apparently been changed. Apart from being able to log in to the site a while ago, I never been able to log in to the virtual environment of Second Life. Of course I’ve contacted “support” on various occasions and requested password reminders only to get nowehre. I’m now going to try and open a new account.

Maybe SL was hacked and someone got into my account and changed my password and email address. If so, it is fortunate that I have put no money into Second Life.

I am now regular user and designer of clothes in the virtual environment that is There.com

  28. 28 Ian Says:

I’m putting this here because frankly SL support is absolutely useless to the extreme and completely ineffective which will be proven further if this does not get posted without good reason.

Personally I am an experienced computer user, in fact I own a small website design company such is the proficiency of my computer skills.

Just tried creating a second Second Life account since SL can’t get the first one right, and I’m asked for payment. I don’t even know what I’m getting yet, so I say it’s my first SL account and no matter how many times I try, the security image text will not be accepted. So what do I do?

Leave. I’m going There (www.there.com). Thanks.

  29. 29 Abbey Zenith Says:

I’m having the same problem as Jeffery. I sign on and see only attached prims, can’t move no body, despite being told that I can move about and other will see me normally… I am frozen. I must relog at least 3 times to get on and if I am unlucky one of those log ins will say that I have to wait because of the presence problem. I downloaded the update, I’ve cleared my cache and so on… this is annoying.

  31. 31 Loki Ball Says:

    @ sabrina & nick,
Glad to see that maybe the lindens are seeing through peoples responses that its not our freakin systems causing these hickups. My comments were made out of a wee bit of sarcasm after i’ve been told several times before with help that “I” may need to do this or “I” may need to do that. Indicating it may be my issue and not secondlife. Well I think everyone is in the majority on where the issue lies. I personally see a spiraling effect cause too many directions are being covered in what seems to be in haste. Not enough thurough testing on updates and too much of a broad variety of things being tinkered with by people who aren’t given them an obvious thurough run through on a beta server. and if any linden says you are, i’d like to know why then are there issues so prevelant when ya bring them in world. I’ll wager a bet. Server load? Too many people logged in? cough, lol. yeah heard just about every calm the masses explaination. Any way the fancy new looks, and the nice little fillers in text bars, and different button configurations etc, could have been an update that addressed performance. Keep working on it tho its bound to work its way out eventually. Hopefully before everyone eventually changes computer systems to like maybe the dual cores or other new makes that aren’t really supported yet by sl. won’t that be a hoot. oh btw i also use a dual core, read the notes on how to make performance better using that. doesn’t help. still crash, still lag. etc etc etc. but i can however see when my friends are typing in im.

  32. 32 Ribbon Dye Says:

Ookies, this is odd. I figured that this was my problem.. Wait 30 mins and all should be fine. So I figured, while this av was down, I’d try logging on another one.. LOGIN FAILED. A completely different av couldn’t log in and hasn’t been logged in for atleast a week, and I can’t get into either? I think theres a bit more of a problem here than you Lindens think..

  33. 33 Redux Dengaku Says:

    *yawn* grid’s down.

  34. 34 Armageddon Shriner Says:

Alright. I don’t knwo if my current problem has ANYTHING to do with this one. But this is pissing me off. I signe dout to relog cause I couldn’t attacth an item to me. but hwen i tried ot get back in I kept getting “login failed.” that’s all it said. So after reading some of the responses on here, i decided I’d try getting on my alt and asking a linden to kick my main off of the grid. But guess what. again I got “Login Failed” why? It’s 3:47 am and I have business to take care of before i FINALLY go to bed.

  40. 40 Ian Says:

Just thought I should add the “Pierre” has done an excellent job in helping resolving the problem for me and I have now logged into the SL world for the first time. :) The problem was a mate taking the mickey out of my name and consequently I forgot how to spell it!

The second time I tried to login however the program crashed, I think it may be because I was logged in via the website. A quick reset of my computer and all is fine. Now, I’m off for a ‘name change’ (delete one account and keep one of the others).

  41. 41 ray Says:

ive tried logging on under 3 different names… it wont work… and hasnt for 3 hrs… im over it… really am

  42. 42 Mazack Frua Says:

I’m locked out at the moment. The time given to log back in keeps moving forward every time I try. Hope it doesn’t take too long. Simply restarted SecondLife to clear the cache.

  43. 43 Birdy Stardust Says:

Hate to tell you but presence issues still abound. Over the last three days friends and I have continued to show up as logged on (information shown in Group menbers lists) several hours after last we were in SL and conversely have been shown as offline when we are standing in front of each other. The only way we are able to find each other in SL is by sending IMs and waiting to see if there is a response.

  44. 44 teragram rinkitink Says:

What is happening to SL? For the last few days and more so this weekend, i have been unable to login to SL, i have uninstalled, reinstalled, changed all sorts of preferences and for what? to be blocked everytime at the “connecting to region” part of login.Oh, tell a lie, i got in this morning, that was until i opened my inventory and then crashed and haven’t got back in yet, we are talking trying to get back in now for nearly 10hours and i pay money for this? It is a joke.

  45. 45 Guido Pascale Says:

You should seriously consider using Jabber, Inc.’s XCP. have you seen their latest scalability PR? they can scale to over 1 million concurrent users on minimum hardware. this would solve your problem.

  46. 46 Zim Kidd Says:

Just joined the basic, figured I would try it out before going all out. But it seems that I can’t even login. Name and password are correct (tried a different name also) but it reads that something isn’t right and that I should check to make sure the caps lock is not on.
Can’t reset password because it won’t recognize the name either. I guess it takes a while to activate a new account or a problem this weekend for new accounts.

  47. 47 Stingrobin munro Says:

HELP.. i can’t log in….. my account is stuck between online and offline…

i logged in to my friends account and then i saw my shelf log in and out… and every time i try to logg in on my account i krash on: Connecting to region HELP ME :(

  48. 48 Ringoes Rhode Says:

I signed up for my basic account yesterday, (Tuesday 29th May 2007)
and I use Gmail. Now Gmail delivers email instantly. But when I finished signup and it told that me that they (linden) had sent an email so I could activate my account I’d registered for. Now I’ve waited a day for this email but it hasn’t arrived. If support can help my username is Ringoes Rhode
