Wednesday, December 13th, 2006 at 2:36 PM by: noralindenCan you believe it has been almost a month since Philip posted about recruitment? It is awesome how much buzz it has generated! We received [literally] hundreds of resumes! Sadly, we have a small Human Resources department here at Linden Lab, and this makes it very difficult for us to respond to every resume we receive. However, when you apply using our website you should receive a confirmation email so you know we have it!
My coworkers asked me to let you all know that several different departments review applications and do some preliminary screening. I assure you we are reviewing every resume that comes in, and contacting individuals with the skills we need for interviews. I apologize that we just don’t have the bandwidth to respond to everyone!
On a side note, we still need more *software* engineers! If you know of any send them our way! Meanwhile, please be patient with us.

If we get a receipt when sending it via the website, why hasn’t anyone got an acknowledgement when sending in requests directly to Philip (with one L) as requested at the town hall?
It may not be “standard business practice” to acknowledge receipt of every resume - but there are a lot of people that consider ignoring people who are willing to volunteer their time to help Linden Lab very rude - caring enough to want to volunteer rather than be paid doesn’t make them second class citizens.

You all are just plain mean to make comments like the above posted. The Linden Lab people have come up with a great concept and are giving to us all the time and effort and ability that they can possibly give and still maintain some sense of their “own lives”. So what do people do, but complain and complain….if you don’t have the patience for this computer game then maybe you should not be on it! Things always look easier when one can look at it from the outside and have time to speculate and think and rethink it…but in the meantime the Linden Lab people people have a business to run and are doing an excellent job, I say! So that is my 2 cents worth, if anyone cares…..

Broccoli, I’ve worked in HR before, so maybe I can help with that.
HR departments don’t add direct value to the users, so they’re kept small enough to handle only core responsibilities. An online-submitted resume can trigger an automated response easily, as you know, but a separate manual response to individual submissions would overload staff. It’s just a fact of life.
For me, I’d rather have LL resources going to bug-fixers and service people rather than clerical staff in HR. It’s a rough go that it looks like volunteers are second-class, but most individual submissions of resumes to any big company won’t be acknowledged. Seems crude, but it’s the new facts of life, unfortunately.

As I love all LL peeps I wanted to give a special acknowledgement to the HR department and I think reaching out to your own community in SL is exactly the thing that SL stands for and having the awesome power to reach out for possible future Lindens in game is a resource that is beyond what RL can offer Great Job and I know HR is probably the one department that does not hear that enough.

I second Storm’s sentiments. Your lack of willingness to consider remote software engineers severly reduces your employment pool. You seem to “get” open source software, at least some parts of it, so surely you can see that distributed software development is a feasible option.

I applied for a couple of jobs. I was intrigued to see that first-round screening interviews are done in-world (as well as in-person or on the phone.) I may have to look for a virtual interview suit

some one mentioned telecommuting. YES! I would have sent LL my resume months ago if they allowed for telecommuting software engineers. Isn’t global collaboration via the metaverse one of the “Big Ideas” that is driving Second Life???? Why then fall back into the 19th Century business model of forcing everyone into a brick and mortar building in one of the most congested, and expensive cities in RL’s North America?!?!
Get with it LL, allow for telecommuting software engineers. There is one here in So. Cal. with over 30 years experience, and advanced degrees who would love to work for LL, but wont trade San Diego for San Francisco.

Have to agree with some of the posts. I might consider something part-time in addition to my regular job.b but very few highly qualified software engineers are going to pick up, move to a high priced city for start-up wages. Heck, I might even volunteer some hours if they help with liasion, QA, BA etc.

Would you please check/confirm that you have a response system in place that always works? A few months ago, I’d sent resumes and two very tailored cover letters (about a month apart) and never received *anything*.
Are you absolutely certain that your systems is catching everything? I’m pretty sure that I’m the sort of person you’re looking for, and I’d be happy to help with the usability issues on your resume/CV submission site.

I submitted my resume and havent heard anything. My official title is Software Engineer and I work for a Redmond, Washington USA software giant developing the latest platform yet to be released to the public.
My resume is impeccable and my certifications in order. Did I miss something? I am pretty sure I qualify based on the job description. Have they contacted people yet for this or is it done?

I emailed my resume in the day after the last town hall, but apparently the email bounced (I only just received that notice. o.O; ). But it’s good to see there are so many people out there in my boat as far as telecommuting goes. Incase the idea of letting people across the net at your source is some kind of hurdle, know that there is a very good open source means:

Just a note on Covenant Land…
Reciently a friend purchased a plot of land, a new user at that; fresh into SL, from a user Penelope Ghia. He got ripped off of the Lindens, after asking her help since she was the land owner. Nothing wil lbe done about it, because the new user did not notice the covenant
Why don’t LL make a seperate option for covenant land.. Its now even harder to find land that can be owned For yourself, that you can sell yourself, and not have the same mistakes that many users are having. I support the idea of the Covenants I just don’t like the way they are taking over the land searches, and making it harder for those wanting land to own.

I sent my resume over a year ago and am still waiting to hear back from you .. 10+ years C++ with design and management credentials, so I don’t think it was a lack of qualification. I also sent an email recently asking if Linden Lab employees are required to divest from SL based businesses? I have a small business in SL. I wish I could get a response either to my resume or my email question. I can understand that you are overwhelmed, but I hope you are not losing good candidates by black-holing resumes and requests for information.

I wish I was a software engineer. I’d love to work for LL. Can’t say as I’d like living in San Fran, but a job would be a job. Unfortunaly, my experience with software is not it writing it, but rather in the realm of beta testing and assisting software engineers in debugging crashes via precise replication of crash circumstances that only occur in builds that are not hooked into a debugger. Matt Slot at Ambrosia Software was very grateful for my dogged persistence in tracking down the single most elusive and seemingly (but not) intermittent crashes in Escape Velocity Nova.

I’m mean sometimes, but some of the people here are really mean.
Have you ever thought of opening up a NYC office(or, heck, even Chicago or Baltimore or something)?
I know it sounds odd/crazy, but I know NYC has developers, QA, managers, left and right - and many of them know what they’re doing!
Either that, or you could be one of the only companies to actually allow telecommuting entirely. It seems that, even with all of the promises of the Internet and the programming culture, no business is doing that yet. That’s always bothered me just a little bit…that the dogma of business culture does not allow people to not have to leave their house.

Boggles my mind that you people expect a response to sending them your resumes as if it’s owed to you. “Now wait just a country minute!!! I sent my resume in, and I NEVER HEARD A THING!! What in tarnation… well it must be that they didn’t get it! That MUST be it. THOSE GUYS *NEED TO GET *ON THE *BALL.”
Perhaps if you knew how the resume review process worked, you complainers would shut yer traps. In the computer industry there’s regularily hundreds of resume’s for each job, the market’s saturated. Volunteer or salaried, they don’t need, want and can’t accept every single person. And no matter how good you think you are, it just really is possible that there’s somebody out there more qualified than you.
So tired of threads where the subject ALWAYS rolls to pointing fingers, could we just not do that for EEEVERY topic out there?? Proof positive that we’re really not much more than apes way down deep. Seriously, if you complainers start flinging poo I’m going to just be sad.

@Sideways. In every other industry on the planet, resumes received get at least a perfunctory postcard response saying that they were received. Considering LL’s customer satisfaction issues, it might be a good policy for them to start doing it, too.
Personally, I’d rather be a questioning ape than a RUUUUUUUUDE human.

About the only thing I can do is tear computers apart, repair them, put them back together, repair the operating system (only Windows though. Sideways, I’ve been involved in resume review processes in the IT industry for years. A confirmation email on receipt is not uncommon. Often times resumes are misplaced or not received. Confirmation of receipt is not an unrealistic expectation.

I’d gladly work for LL. Unfortunately, I have no actual expericne. BS in comp-sci, yes. Newly minted skills in VB.net, yes, (and a smattering of using databases in VB.)
Actual job experience. Sadly no.
But when you start taking experience free programmers. I’d gladly move to the bay area.
I’ll miss my toys, though. San-Fran has some draconian infringements on the constitution.

I wouldn’t want to work at a company that gives away the store to any 15 year old that can set up a yahoo acount, and turns off features people pay for as a matter of policy. I barely care enough to post here, and since they instituted their no refund policy on our last TOS, will miserably wait until July for my account to expire so I can cancel it. Logging onto to second life is no longer fun, but a chore; one I’m rapidly finding more disagreeable than cleaning a cat box.

I just started to make a blog on freeware Human Resources software in order to help new employers, starting businesses, small companies, … to streamline their Human Resources Department without spending money for those resources they might need.
As a HR-manager and SAP HR certified consultant I add weekly an interesting freeware software dealing with HR-issues.
