[UPDATE] Restoration of Inventories moved to another database

[2:40 PM PST] News: things have calmed down inworld and most of you previously experiencing this issue should now, happily, have your Inventory restored. The remaining cases are being fixed, so if you’re still affected, please state so in the comments with your Second Life name, and specify any additional details.

[2:04 PM PST] Sorry, I don’t have an ETA on how much longer this will take. I’m continuing to check. We don’t recommend you make Inventory changes if you’re affected by this issue, but if you must, at your own best judgment, Domino Marama has a tip:

If anyone has bought or created something with a temporary inventory before reading that they shouldn’t - they can probably save it from being lost by sticking it the contents of a prim on their land. Once the real inventory is back just move back out of the prim..

[1:05 PM PST] If you’re affected by this issue, as a precaution, please do NOT buy stuff which would end up in your Inventory (such as clothes). Looks like they’ll be lost when your actual Inventory is restored.

[12:56 PM PST] Not all Residents are affected by this, just those having Inventories moved. If you’re affected, you may have seen this message: “Login Failed. Unable to complete transform’ Copy inventory to new database’ Please contact support@secondlife.com” Once we get this fixed, you won’t have to contact Support.

Hot issue right now: if you get a message saying your Inventory’s being moved to another database, don’t panic if your Inventory is missing and you find yourself appearing as a generic avatar (a purple-shirted woman known as “Ruth”). Your Inventory will be restored.

We’re working on it, we’re sorry, and it’ll be fixed ASAP.

I’ll update this post as more news comes.

    It would have been nice to have been notified of this BEFORE it happened. Although I was not affected (thankfully!), some friends of mine were and they were extremely irritated. We understand that things must be done, but if you are in world at the time and don’t get a message to read the blog, it’s horrible when you think everything you have worked for and paid for is gone.

    I had to confirm details, however, because this went on longer than expected, it seems.

    I always love hopping on here FAST but at the same time, I strive for accuracy. Wouldn’t want to cause distress with a new prob that was already solved!

    I know things happen sometimes that are unwanted, but isn’t there away to test these updates b4 you open to all residents on the grid, I have a clotheing store and my inventory is full of all that i have designed and everything i sell, not to mention everything I have paid for like Skins etc. The alarming thing in this matter is that stuff has been lost in inventories and never came back for one reason or another, so some that see that and have lost items kinda sit back and hold their breathe and hope they see there items.. Seeing a couple things gone is one thing but an entire inventory is another….

    yes, Devin, I agree it was alarming. I lost my ao a few weeks ago during the golden ring grid attack and the ao never came back. I had just loaded new animations too! Now to log in and find nothing at all in my inventory was very upsetting … feeling like a year a half was wasted.

    I must say, I am very disappointed that no notice when out BEFORE this switch over. I am happy that Linden is trying to improve the game, however as a prior victim of…missing items here and there….to all of a sudden have my entire inventory gone is stressful…not to mention…the on hand experience of knowing WHEN ITS GONE…ITS GONE..I do hope Linden works fast on this issue and we dont get the….sorry guys…we tried…here’s 5000 lds to start u over again message. To think that I might have to start over is distressing….Next time..a lil more notice guys!!…..

    I didn’t get the ruth and not the error message, and my inventory isn’t empty - but I did get a question wether I am male or female (damn, no “gargoyle” option there - only stupid human selections) and then couldn’t rez stuff from my inventory, even though it was there. and the inventory isn’t complete - some things are missing, some not.

    ok, in my case I was just lagging inventory updates it seems - it slowly filled up, so I guess the question wether I am male or femal was just because the inv wasn’t fully there at time of login. *whew* - it’s quite a horror for a gargoyle to suddenly look like a squishy human ;)

    Ok, this is what happened…I bought a set of slots for 15K. I go to my casino and rez them. Nothing happened. I then get a blue pop up that they timed out rezzing. They all vanished. This was yesterday afternoon. Since then this keeps happening, I’m out about 30K now in casino equipment.
    Live Help does not respond, Support Email does not respond, I called support on the telephone, they passed the buck back to emailing support.
    Could you tell me if this is related to the above problem?
    Stick a fork in me. I’m about done (w/SL). I am ready to sell off my land for a cheap price and leave. I pay 112.00 a month for this aggravation? I don’t know who is crazier? Me, for trying to tolerate this or LL for their insane business practice of making everything worse as time goes on?

    Well it happened to me just BEFORE reading this. I was moving items between my inventory and a vendor and just lost a no copy item. It did not return to my inventory. I would love to know if I’ll know if I will be able to retrieve my item and if so, how?

    There is a saying “When it rains it pours”.. Is there always a storm cloud above Linden Labs.. Need a better way of adding new features to SL b4 you bring it on the man grid so something like this doesn’t happen everytime something is added.. To some in SL this is like a RL job that pays bills etc. Just like the Search issue that can cause a loss of $$ and has caused a loss.. isn’t that what the test grid is for, or is the test grid that different then the main grid that causes these crashes..

    We as residents should be used to this by now, this si the first time that i have felt totally helpless and at the mercy of the LL employess to save all my work in SL.. Maybe a added feature to back up all work from the SL server to ones Hard Drive? just a thought.

    maybe what should be done also, as lame as it sounds, is that people go through their inventory and delete out all the crap they have in it. I’ve found notecards, objects that make me go “wtf?” and other stuff in it. I used to sport a decent amount of free stuff in mine to help new comers, but since I barely run into newcomers anymore, I deleted those out and that cut down my inventory count by about 2,000 items. I deleted a bunch of girls clothes, womens clothes, etc that wasn’t needed either from those folders.

    Even without all the grid griefing/crashing/bs/bloated updates stuff going on, it still makes sense to do house cleaning. If you aren’t using the ufo or motorbike you got a year ago now, chances are you won’t use it a year from now ;)

    it’s also a sneaky way of taking loads/freeing up disk space on the asset server, probably a 286 with 512K of ram and a 25 megabyte hard disk shoved underneath Torley’s desk ;)

    I agree with Devin on a backup feature being a good feature to add. I can see why security issues would make a full offline inventory backup unlikely, but being able to backup the stuff that has me as creator would give some peace of mind.

    having a backup to hard disk option will never be put into the client, content creators that already whine too much about copybots and baconbots or whatever else will scream even more if that made it in. It also removes too much control from LL, something they desire sadly. it creates a control leak in the client, if people can start backing up their virtual assets to their hard disk, then it starts taking LL out as the primary content storage source.

    it’s why I think a server won’t be released to the public anytime soon also, even if 25,000 people download it, all it takes is one smart person to reverse engineer it, and build their own version of secondlife.

    with all the anti secondlife sentiment going around mixed in with those sympathize with them even as their money vanishes down the prim drain, the worst thing LL could do at this point is start coding in features and releasing programs that give more control to the end user ;)

    Uh, wow, guys, maybe a warning next time you’re making changes to the inventory system like this?

    Really, LL, is my largest complaint with your company. SL just changes, without warning or without explanation, and those of us who want to exist in its virtual world are left to deal with the fallout. This is part of why I have stopped trying to run a business in SL; It’s too unpredictable and too instable.

    Sure, that’s to be expected with a totally new system such as SL, but I would expect at least a little warning when things like, say, inventories might just evaporate for an unspecified amount of time.

    What will this do if anything at all for those of us that have lost major portions of our inventory due to the 1.13 update last week?

    I am still saddened to see no word about our situation in the blogs. I feel totally ignored on this and I would think the rest of us who have lost so much feel prety much the same.

    So will this inventory database shuffle help us to regain our lost items?
    Are we going to get some assistance to replace those items at all?
    Should I just quit spending an average of 5000L a month on stuff that will likely dissapear from my inventory down the road?

    I understand there is a lot for the Linden staff to try and fix since that totally messed up update but the loss of my inventory items affects my ability to work and pay for the land I am renting.

    Yep, I’m still missing nearly 15000 items, and yeah, it’s really annoying–I like the tip about dropping what I want to keep in a cube, and if things are still missing when I log back in, I’ll do that. But it’s not so much losing the quickie temporary shape/skin/set of clothes and eyes and AO I bought–it’s losing the original 14000 and change that made my heart clench.

    This will be my sixth cache clear and relog, with no joy in sight, unless everything restores now. I’m just hoping this resolves SOON…

    I am getting the same issues faced during the previous week with my alt, Elysia Everidge. No avatar rezzing, no inventory, no Lindens showing, etc.

    As Cornelia, I have some slowness of my inventory, but all appears to be okay.

    Will this rolling update fix the temp-rez issues? And thank you, Torley, for your response to me about that. ^_^

    Hajduk, Eileen, and everyone else in a similar situation: Please try this: Preferences > Network tab and press “Clear Cache” button. Relog and see if anything more comes back.

    L$ balances are *not* affected by this. That’s different.

    Rocky: Sounds like you may have a different issue than the one described above, please clear cache and check. You too, Scooby.

    Speaking of, for general Inventory loss issues, please file a bug report inworld: Help menu > Report Bug and send an IM to Kona or Beast Linden with the # of the auto-reply email you get. They’ll investigate it!

    It was the rolling updates that started before things are resolved with this issue that really worried me. My major loses would be my own products. Wasn’t too worried before as the majority could be retrieved from my vendor servers. Now with the rolling updates there’s the worry of ending up with empty land as well as an empty inventory. Will everything come back or will I lose everything? Not the best thought to head off to bed with.

    re: Speaking of, for general Inventory loss issues, please file a bug report inworld: Help menu > Report Bug and send an IM to Kona or Beast Linden with the # of the auto-reply email you get. They’ll investigate it!

    I have done that and more. Not a word one back from emailing support, IMing Kona, or bug report. I would like to know at least it is being looked into, a “got your message and you are added to the list of people we are looking into this for.”

    The only two acknowledgements I have recieved is on the forum from you Torley and that blurb I quoeted.

    I give up. Its lost. I doubt I will see it ever again just like the last time I had an inventory item dissapear.

    I was having a lot of trouble with my internet connection earlier just before this started so I was offline for a while, then when I tried to log back into SL I got the transformation failed moving inventory to faster database (or something like that) error… so I tried again… and it just froze for ages logging in… then said my account was undergoing minor maintenance and wasn’t available for a minute… then when it finally logged me in… everything was gone and it was asking me whether I wanted the male or female character. This was all before there was a post on the blog about it.

    Then just after that my internet connection went completely, I’ve finally just got back on, and its still the same. It just asked me about the male or female character again, and there’s absolutely nothing in my inventory.

    My second life name is Eddy Ofarrel.

    Can you pleeeeeeeeeease try to sort this out before I go completely insane. Please please please please please. Thankyou.

    Ok, I am a TG resident and once the wave hit the TG basically the whole grid was down and everyone logged out, that is very annoying when like the WHOLE grid shutdowns suddenly. -_-

    Tried teleporting but unfortunately had nowhere to go.

    I wasn’t originally affected by the lost inventory, but since the rolling update first started, my inventory only loads 455 items (I have over 3000). I’ve logged in and out several times in the past hour, and travelled through parcels, but the inven remains semi-lost.

    I logged in and got asked if I wanted a male or female av. Like when I first popped in to Help Island and now I’m————————– a small guy in jeans, t-shirt, slippers and ———- you get the picture. And NO inventory. All I have is a friends list.

    I just lost two camping chairs put them out a few mins ago and they didnt rez, and they vanished.
    Also lost a rox media center. These camping chairs were special from LF gecko sim and resembled a guitar case and a janitor’s bucket.

    Some of my notecards with embedded links have changed. Some of these are okay, while others have changed and now have ?marks instead of the link to the other information. Any way to save these cards? Live Help was no answer.

    Hello Torley. I’m one of the ones experiencing a large inventory loss. I normally load about 30-35 thousand objects depending on the season and right now I am loading between 15-18 thousand objects. I have sent in a bug report and offline emails to LL. No response. It’s beginning to domino as livehelp advises my customers with inventory problems to contact me for replacement. I no longer have my originals. Thanks for any help. : )
