Classified Listings Auto-renewed for an Extra Week at No Charge
Wednesday, December 6th, 2006 at 5:18 PM by: Jesse LindenWe understand this has been a frustrating past few days since the update, especially for those of you who have had classified listings up and working only intermittently. As a one-time courtesy, we have decided to extend everyone’s in-world Classifieds listings one week as of ~4:30PM PST today, December 6th. This means your ad’s auto-renew date has now been set forward one week. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding in this matter and we’ll continue to do our best to provide the highest level of service we can.

Very refreshing. Thank you for this. I don’t own any classifieds, but I appreciate the gesture.
December 6th, 2006 at 5:34 PM
wow…this is the first thing i have seen LL do for the public in terms of an embursement…thank you for thinking of the users
December 6th, 2006 at 5:36 PM
Thats nice and all…. hmmm mine wasnt auto-renewed at no charge care to explain?
December 6th, 2006 at 5:39 PM
thanks…
December 6th, 2006 at 5:39 PM
So, forgive me if this has been addressed somewhere else in the blog, but are classifieds working properly again? I’m not in-world and won’t be for a few hours so I can’t check for myself at the moment.
December 6th, 2006 at 5:44 PM
thanks for renewing our classified at no charge this week, would be even better if the places feature worked. i guess it is better to have them renewed at no charge for something that is not working than to pay and have the same thing. Just kidding LL…thanks for helping us out!!
December 6th, 2006 at 5:44 PM
looks like they are at this point in time but by the time you get online who knows
December 6th, 2006 at 5:47 PM
@ TBA…
I’d laugh, but unfortunately that may be all too true. Thanks for the info.
December 6th, 2006 at 5:54 PM
I appreciate everybody is working as hard as they can but it’s frustrating when upgrades end up reducing functionality in the short term not improving it!
We brought our business into SL because I was excited both by SL itself and by the promise of what is both a new leading edge business channnel and a legal frontier (we are IP attorneys) - I am doing some great networking here.
The simple thing I want at the moment is for the simple things to work - no packet loss (and my packet sniffing trace says the problem is at the Linden Lab end), no lag, no freezing or crashing, and Property and Classifieds searching to work properly.

Thank you Lindens! Much appreciated

Thanks
December 6th, 2006 at 7:28 PM
Well, I certainly appreciate the courtesy of not paying for something that I didn’t receive. Here is my concern, however… At the moment, the Classifies search IS returning SOME results. When I search for keywords from my classifieds, my ads are not returned, BUT MY COMPETITORS’ ADS ARE!!!
So now Search is sending my potential clients straight to my competitors. This is not the least bit equitable in my opinion. Consumers think they are being given all of the results for their search, when in fact they are not.
This may not be a popular opinion, but it doesn’t work for me to have “half of a system” running. It is, in fact, hurting my business. Just like having “Popular Places” up when regular Place Search is down. Do the popular places really need more traffic driven to them? People with money to burn are going to go shopping there while the smaller businesses lose out at even having a fighting chance to get their attention.
December 6th, 2006 at 7:36 PM
Thank you.
Question: When do you anticipate fixing the problem of the Search in Classified (and possibly other categories) working only on the first word of the title, rather than searching all words in the title, and the words in the descriptive text, as it did before this update?
It is difficult to shop when you put in “Dresses” and get only something that happens to be titled, “Dresses by so-and-so.”
It’s even more difficult for sellers, who have to depend on a single word, at the beginning of their business title, to be found.

December 6th, 2006 at 7:52 PM
Wow
that’s good news. Thanks alot.
December 6th, 2006 at 8:23 PM
Now thats what I’m talking about, accountability. Thanks LL.
December 6th, 2006 at 9:29 PM
What reimbursement do you plan to offer for those of us who cancelled our ads today because the search has remained unfixed?
December 6th, 2006 at 9:57 PM
Not really understandable why this is such an issue. Search worked (for the most part) before the update for how many years?? Now all the sudden it don’t? I don’t really expect search to ever work correctly again. It’s kind of like the sit feature, back a year ago when I started SecondLife, it was simple to sit on most anything reasonable, specifically flat service was 100% certainty you would be able to sit with no fuss. Now it takes me 25 to 30 attempts half the time to be able to sit on a flat surface. (Get the “this is an unsuitable surface, blah blah”). Obviously that was never fixed, and never will be. I think the search feature will do the same.
Oh well, thanks for the credit LindenLabs. Was really nice to receive this.
December 6th, 2006 at 9:59 PM
Let’s hold the thanks a bit.
As it turns out, classifieds are still not really working correctly. It still doesn’t allow for searches in the content of the ad, only in the title, and the ads are not ranked based on how much somone spent on the ad. So while it’s great that LL has decided to credit everyone with a free week, it’s still a week with MUCH less functionality than we’re paying for.
IMO, if LL is truly committed to doing their “best to provide the highest level of service” they can, classifieds should be credited until the classified listings function properly, as they did before with the entire content of the ad searchable and listed in order of the amount spent.
Enough of these lame excuses is enough. It has now been a week since the functionality has been severely impaired. If you can’t fix this issue, roll back to the previous version of the software until you can get your act together.
I couldn’t care less about the privacy features you introduced if no one can find my business in a search.
December 6th, 2006 at 10:22 PM
Great news, thank you
And I’m happy to offer free virtual vodka to those whose stash of Christmas cheer is apparently a bit low
December 6th, 2006 at 10:41 PM
Excellent!
Now how about some form of reimbursement for the paying accounts and sim owners who shell out $195/month for the lack of service they’ve dealt with?
December 6th, 2006 at 11:15 PM
This is actually insulting… LL has doled out approximately 16 cents US (for the typical $50L classified), 16 cents that does not actually exist, as the classifieds dont cost them anything. What about the paying customers who dont happen to have a classified?
What about the paying customers who count on search-places for their clubs and businesses?
What about the paying customers who rely on search to get around? Why should -I- have to work around a problem that should never have happened in the first place?
What about REAL USD refunds to those of us who pay real money for a broken, half usable service?
December 6th, 2006 at 11:58 PM
I’ve unticked “auto renew” therefore I won’t get my free week. Anyway, this still sucks, the ads are what make ppl know where our shops are, but we are all paying for rent, tier and such for nothing.
Lindens : this is the worst mistake you’ve made recently. And of course you can’t refund for rentals that are paid to mall owners. Check the malls, they’re getting empty.
Something’s really wrong with you. I guess you’re now interested in getting Adidas, Dell and NBC happy and don’t care anymore about what’s the salt of SL : independant artists making original things in a free world. We have plenty of regular brands in the real world, we don’t need them here and you don’t understand that. PPl are not going to pay you to find what they can find in the real world, think about that ! And fix the search !
December 7th, 2006 at 12:17 AM
A guarded acknowledgement to LL. Not however dealing with the whole issue is it?
An extended weeks advertising, is not a reimbursement. The fact is, that LL can create the lost L$ and sell them to us on the LindeX anytime they feel the pinch. It will be interesting to see whether supply Linden sales match the missing L$ which would have been paid in advertising.
The continued change to the way classified is now searched, as has been pointed out by other people, has still not been addressed.
In reality this is a good PR stunt, as seemingly LL are listening to their customers complaints. It costs LL absolutely zero and doesn’t address the concerns people have about the way classifieds has changed the search criteria.
December 7th, 2006 at 12:36 AM
Sorry, but this is to little to late. Ive lost thousands of L$ on classifieds that I simply could not afford to renew with the search broken.
I want to see a full refund of all adverts that were in ANY WAY affected by the recent changes, an extension of running classifieds does nothing to address the money LOST on adverts that were plavced before things were changed.
Sorry Jessie, but LL need to put some cash on the table this time round. I paid for a service I did not recieve, I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

2 Cocoanut Koala: Yesterday they even didn’t know that there is such a bug. I contacted Live Help asking if they were aware of it, and the answer i’ve got: “shouldn’t it be so? i am not sure that it’s a bug”
December 7th, 2006 at 1:11 AM
Addition to my previous comment, this answer was given by a Linden person of course
December 7th, 2006 at 1:14 AM
Ahh… that’s a good thing….:) and I who renewed and paid just yesterday… oh well…
December 7th, 2006 at 1:50 AM
Thanks LL it’s a step in the right direction and much appreciated. Good luck getting the search working how it was.
December 7th, 2006 at 2:30 AM
Whether you own multiple sims or a 4000 sq m property, if you have a business in SL then you have been affected the same. Regardless of whether you take L$100 or L$100,000 a week - proportionally, all have suffered. If your huge advertising budget stretches your cashflow - maybe you need to review that instead of complaining about ‘lost sales’. Don’t forget, too, that shoppers have suffered by not being able to find things easily as well.
Thank you Linden Lab for at least an acknowledgement and attempt at compensation for the lack of functionality caused by the latest patch.

Classifieds are not working totally right still. They are only searching the title of the ads and not doing that well. Some places I used to find with certain keywords I cannot find whatsover. They are extreme adult content so I wont post actual examples here.
Also when are those of us that lost huge amounts of our inventory going to see some help to get those back? Not even an acknowledgment of our troubles on that issue in here and my losses are over 10K value, all lost from inventory not rezzed inworld items. Included in my list are over 20 outfits and most of my expensive sex objects.
December 7th, 2006 at 3:06 AM
For some reason mine wasnt auto-renewed….
Is there anyway to get mine auto-renewed like the others?
December 7th, 2006 at 3:25 AM
Big thumbs up on that from my side.
December 7th, 2006 at 4:09 AM
Damn, my ad wasn’t set to auto-update. It ran out on Tuesday and I had to create another for L$50.
December 7th, 2006 at 4:09 AM
Thank you, a step in the good direction, even if it’s about a week late.
However, I would need classifieds to work as before: I advertise my shop with it’s name, and the description containing the items. If this is not fixed, I still pay for nothing of value
Also, if a classified which costs L$ 200 generates sales of L$ 1000 per week, the missing L$ 800 is also a problem. Many people who sell products rely on sales to cover their land tiers, so, in this respect, a refund from the monthly land use fees would be appropriate, too.
December 7th, 2006 at 4:20 AM
I’ve thought about this issue for the last few days while I dished out more lindens to a non working search box in order to maintain my sl presence. I also thought about paying my tier of 400 US smackaroonies a month for the service being provided and I must say its a tad bit frustrating being handicapped by the people you are paying.
On the flip side…
Im still making money- cause ima hustla. The problems sl are having are forcing me to come up with fresh ideas and marketing techniques to keep afloat. If I did not have so much time and money invested into this game…
All said & done.. I would quit.
A free week of classifieds are cool. I was really SURPRISED to see that upon loggin on. Do domething about my tier and Ill be a happy camper.

I, as other have commented, appreciate this effort on LL’s part to do the right thing concerning our adverts, however of the eight adverts I run weekly, only two were auto renewed. Those two being the 50L$ a pop versions. Better than nothing yes, but not terribly helpful considering the prices of the more expensive adverts that weren’t auto-renewed as per this blog post’s promise. I’ll carry on to be sure, but a bit disappointing.
Thank you for making the effort, I wish its implementation had been a bit more thorough, a half step in the right direction.
December 7th, 2006 at 4:56 AM
I appreciate this. However, my classified as was actually cancelled, not autorenewed. This particular classified has been set to auto-renew for months, and I had been paying a bit over 1000 per week. Is there something you can do for me? I have manually renewed my classified. Thank you.
December 7th, 2006 at 5:30 AM
Thank you
December 7th, 2006 at 5:31 AM
I’m sick of this and all of the other problems in this update. If it is truly neccesary for LL to cripple the client to keep things stable, it is time for a rewrite, not patches upon patches upon patches.
December 7th, 2006 at 5:43 AM
I don’t even have a classified yet. Can I extend the “no classified” period another week? Will this auto-renew if I continue to not have a classified? If I make one, will the “no classified” status automatically cancel, or will I have to tell someone that I wish to cancel my not having a classified? If I cancel the “no classified” period before the week is out, will the remainder of my time be on a pro-rata basis? It’s all So terribly confusing
Thank you.
December 7th, 2006 at 6:07 AM
It comes too late for me, I cancelled my ads Tuesday
They will not be placed again until this problem is fixed, and I mean to my staisfaction, not by some PR Hack posting in a blog “We fixed it!” despite all evidience to the contrary.
December 7th, 2006 at 7:01 AM
Watch out ! Complaining will get the post taken off again like the one they stopped on Monday.
Once my store income doesnt pay my monthly teir like it is looking like will happen this month, Linden can find someone else to pay them a monthly rate and I will go back to a free account.
December 7th, 2006 at 7:11 AM
“As a one-time courtesy, we have decided to extend everyone’s in-world Classifieds listings one week as of ~4:30PM PST today, December 6th. This means your ad’s auto-renew date has now been set forward one week.”
Please clarify this quote on auto renew for classified at no charge. I do not have my ads set at auto renew I manually set my ads each week. Does this mean I have 7 day extension to the ads I currently have?
Thanks, Mash Mandala ~ Depoz
December 7th, 2006 at 7:19 AM
I’m inclined to agree with those who suggest a roll-back is necessary until these problems are solved. Having the primary search feature (places) down and out for this long is completely unacceptable to those of us paying money for these services. My tier fee is small and it’s bothering me, I can’t imagine how someone shelling out hundreds each month must be feeling about now.
December 7th, 2006 at 7:45 AM
Just do a roll back.
December 7th, 2006 at 7:56 AM

Thankfully, for those who rely on classified advertising in Second Life, Jesse Linden has just announced that there will be a one-time, one-week extension to existing classified advertisements, to compensate for the last week of troubles. [...]
December 7th, 2006 at 9:13 AM
LL is in material breach.
Refund in full (not only advertising but all customers adversely affected)
Just say no to releasing alpha-quality work.
Time for a roll-back.
December 7th, 2006 at 9:27 AM
A step in the right direction, LL, BUT…
We need to be clear on one point. The classifieds are NOT “up and working only intermittently”. They are not functional, as the only thing that can be searched for is an exact match on the first word in the store name. If a potential customer can not enter “Dress” or “Cheongsam” and find my ads for Ceera’s Fashions, then my ads are NOT working. Period.
I had already cancelled auto-renewal on my three ads. They were created on December 1st, and I see no way of determining if this “one-time courtesy” of extending our ad time in compensation for a FULL WEEK OF NO SERVICE, will apply to me or not. Given that the Classifieds are STILL worthless, and STILL can not be searched, if the ad doesn’t renew into the next week, I’ll not cry over it. The free week won’t do any good if no one can search for what I sell and find my ad!
You’ll get no more advertising fees from my businesses, at all, until the search function for the Classifieds actually WORKS again. Until then, you’re taking money for a service that you ARE NOT providing.
December 7th, 2006 at 9:55 AM
Hi,
I really liked the buggy classifieds, triggering on the first words. Sure, we had to put up more 50L classifieds so that we could reach out to all our markets, but we were able to specialize which is what people needed. I am sad to see that the classifieds have been “fixed” and that people who can load their ads with the most keywords and pay enough to shove it to the top get the advantage again.
December 7th, 2006 at 10:20 AM
This is a step in the right direction. Good idea Lindens.
I thought I had a classified entered, but have not had any luck searching for it. Is there another easy way to find out what classifieds you have entered in the system and what is active?
December 7th, 2006 at 10:46 AM
I advertise my merchants and my own products in the classifieds, lots of ppl come to my place not only looking for my casino games, but for the stuff me and my merchants sell there. Now the classified only track the title and not the content, so im loosing traffic and money. I vote for a roll back or a full refund of the money we are paying for a service we dont have anymore, and the money we are loosing because everything is “working” wors every single day

The thing I can’t figure out is if SL is such a horrible place for commerce, like Miles Sullivan and many others seem to think… why do people still use it as such then?
The fact is that things break. Sometimes you don’t always get what you pay for. When that happens you get reimbursed for what you paid for, not what you lost because of it. Which is precisely what LL did. They can’t help you with your lost “profits”.
Just because it’s virtual doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. The US government can randomly create USD as well. And they do! It’s the basis for the US economy. Refunding that much classified ad’s revenue is a cut from LL. They won’t make that “profit” this week. Plus, you are selling things that can be duplicated just as easily as L$ itself. You’re complaining that you have suffered losses, but really, there’s nothing to lose. You simply haven’t had as high of gains. Lower Gains does not equal Loss. Otherwise you could demand money from tons and tons and tons of people for every little thing they do to cause your gains to drop. Target could sue Walmart for having lower prices, a small gift store next to a large grocery could sue the grocery store if the grocery company decided to close that location because that small gift store relied on that large grocery store for pass-by customers. But no, life doesn’t work that way. If your business relies on a single point of failure for it’s advertising, then maybe you should reconsider your business model and find other forms of advertising.
I do agree that they should go back and look at last week’s ads and perhaps refund those as well, for those who removed autorenew. That would be kind of them. But at least they’ve done something.
December 7th, 2006 at 12:15 PM
Other ways of advertising? Teach me please, i have to pay a classified for each product i sell because the system doesnt work properly? Please…
December 7th, 2006 at 12:36 PM
The point is simply that a lot of us paid for a service up front in good faith. We did not get what we paid for, we want our money back - simple and as difficult as that.
It might take time to process a refund, it takes seconds for someone to make a decision. This has been dragging on and on and on. Money -> Table -> NOW
December 7th, 2006 at 12:45 PM
I second that, excellent post ninjafoo
December 7th, 2006 at 4:47 PM
Thank you Linden Labs, its been a difficult week for everyone with all the issues and good luck fixing them.
December 7th, 2006 at 6:20 PM
Until search functionality is returned would LL please consider lowering the minimum cost of a classified ad so that people can get the same funcitionality through several ads for the same price they were paying before?
Ie if someone previously paid $50L for an ad that contained 10 keywords, it now takes 10 ads at $50L to get the same search-ability for a total of $500L
If LL would lower the minimum to $5L per ad then they could get the 10 ads for $50L still and have the same search results as before.
Please consider this as a temporary solution until the feature is fixed?
December 7th, 2006 at 10:35 PM
i had an ad, and it was about 30K, i did NOT renew, on wed because of the tp’s not working and traffic being down over 2k to my location.
how do i go about getting a week added, or how can i go about getting a refund. i also had some 50L ads but I really only care about the 30K plus ad as that is a lot of money to pay when customers can’t tp in.
please let me know and thank you for your willingness to address this concern of so many who appreciate and use the classifieds.
respectfully,

December 8th, 2006 at 3:41 AM
Well, I just got charged for 3 of my classifieds?? so what is up with that?
December 8th, 2006 at 5:07 AM
I just noticed that the clasified ad charge of $303 just went through as it normally does. Are we getting two weeks on this payment or was this payment not to have gone through? It was my understanding that the auto-renew was set forward a week which should have put this payment off a week.
Anyway, just curious.
December 8th, 2006 at 5:10 AM
My classified ad billed me today as well. Is it the next one that is free or was there a mixup?
December 8th, 2006 at 5:24 AM
My classified charge of $100 went through as well. Just checking too as I thought we wouldn’t be charged.
December 8th, 2006 at 6:15 AM
This offer is all well and good, but I was charged my classified fee today as usual, just as I was a week ago. So, I’ll send an e-mail to support that will probably never get answered. This offer of a free week of classiied ads, which are practically useless at the moment anyway, sounds like a bunch of spin to me.
December 8th, 2006 at 6:59 AM
I also had a pair of ads that I had auto-renew turned off on. Add me to the list of people who’s like to see some method of reimbursement for the non-working ads that didn’t have auto-renew on. That being said, I think if you’re selling something original & unique that people will still find you. Quality products have a way of letting themselves be known. I’m only about 3 weeks old and even with all these problems, I’m still going to break even on my huge commercial lot on only four products, mostly my animated Christmas trees and the snow machine, because a good product helps to sell itself. About half the people coming to buy my snow machine have seen it elsewhere and took the time to track me down (to them, big thanks). I fully agree with Valen…. losing potential income is not the same as losing actual income.
All in all….. the problems == suck. The Lindens != rotten demons because of it. I’m sure they hate the problems at least as much as we do. How would you like this many pissed-off customers where you work? No, common sense tells me, they’re doing what they can, who would choose to be a flame magnet like they are currently?
December 8th, 2006 at 9:53 AM
I was just charged for my renewing classified ads today. I thought you said the date was pushed a week?
December 8th, 2006 at 10:09 AM
As a new business owner I appreciate the gesture of the free auto renewal. However I don’t think it is worth very much as searching classifieds is still problematic.
I think LL should not concentrate on fixing the places search at all. In fact I think they should get rid of it. They should fix the classified ads so that not only the title but the description is keyword searchable.
Why is the search places search needed? If classifieds are working correctly business owners can advertise their store or club or whatever at a price that they determine their business is worth. This would eliminate the need for business owners to have campers, since traffic would no longer be an incentive and they could put their money into the classified ads. Yes I know this would give LL more $$ but that’s what they are here for so it could help them meet business objectives. And who knows maybe it will help some of their Database issues. Since the database issues and the search functions seem to be combined maybe getting rid of one of the duplicate searches would help.
I know the search places is nice, but it is also cluttered and clunky.
December 8th, 2006 at 1:15 PM
Add me to the list. I got billed this morning as well for a classified I posted last Friday.
So much for the free compensation. Is this something worth reporting to Live Help or
a bug report, or since it was just supposed to be a nice gesture, are they not going to
care anyway?

I have also been charged for my classified renewals. Shame really, they don’t seem to be bringing in much business this week.
December 10th, 2006 at 7:15 PM
Ive been charged for Classifieds as well, last Sunday, Wednesday, and today.
December 10th, 2006 at 11:07 PM
Am I to understand that only the ads that had auto renew are eligible for the extra week? How is that logical? Everyone who ran an ad during this fiasco was cheated by the intermittent and for all practical purposes.. nonfunctional search. I had a very.. veryyyy… expensive ad running, well , not running I should say. It was not set for auto renew, but I think i should still get my week of advertising that I paid for, don’t you?
As if that isn’t enough, I was also billed like everyone else seems to have been for my auto renew ad.
What is the status with this, will I be refunded, credited, or is the ad going to magically reappear when you all get … your stuff together…?
December 11th, 2006 at 8:37 AM
Add to the list, charge for my classified $200L and $100L last monday and charge again today.
