Linden blog comments now highlighted

Monday, December 4th, 2006 at 5:52 PM by: Torley

Watermelon Web two-point-oh Badge (PNG version)The last week has been host to a lot of “little things that make a big difference” on our OLB — short for Official Linden Blog.

It’s exciting to go live with all manner of visibility tweaks which help communicate with you. Like:

  • Widgets such as the red Hot Notices and the easy Grid Status Updates feed
  • clarified Blog Guidelines — including by the comment box
  • timezone finally stated (PST)

I’m more of an AND than an OR person, so I’m happy these changes make it easier to present and understand news which needs to appear here, pronto!

Today, Jose Linden added something in response to both Linden and Resident requests: Linden comments now get highlighted, so you can see them easier when paging through a long thread.

I’ll post a sample comment here so you can see… and please leave suggestions for future blog improvements (keeping in mind we’re on WordPress VIP so not all plugins work)! =)

  1. 1 Torley Linden Says:

As you can see my comment is highlighted, I hope you never miss another Linden comment again.

    Avatarfully yours, Torley
    (aka Watermelinden and Aggregatorley)

  2. 2 Elling Ellison Says:

thats a good idea, good for skimming a blog to find out official facts.

  3. 3 Baba Says:

    zOMG! Fancy

  4. 4 Jesse Malthus Says:

I saw that in the last 2 entries, and wanted to comment on it, but it would have been offtopic
Yey! That’s really cool and fills my heart with joy.

  5. 5 Baba Says:

    >Avatarfully yours, Torley
    >(aka Watermelinden and Aggregatorley)

And if you’re not nice you might meet Aggrotorley ;0

  6. 6 Torley Linden Says:

YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE ME WHEN I’M ANGRY…

(but really, when does that ever happen?)

Thanx Elling and Baba and Jesse!

  7. 7 Bryon Ruxton Says:

Will your comments get highlighted in red when you are angry? :)

  8. 8 Otenth Says:

Nice tweaks, AND I read my blogs through an aggregator (bloglines), and your RSS feed doesn’t update in a timely fashion. (For instance, right now the most recent post is Saturday’s about the water workaround.)

  9. 9 Ravanne Sullivan Says:

What’s this highlighting you’re talking about? I don’t see anything any different than I’ve seen all along.

What I and I’m sure many others would like to see, highlighted or not is some real information on what is happening to the many problems in SL.

When will search be fixed? Will we be compensated for the expenses we’ve inccured for unusable classifieds? Why have we gone all day without an update on the status of things even though you promised us regualr and informative updates? Somehow in the face of all the problems that we’re suffering with, highlighted comments seems like a waste of valuable time that could be better spent on other issues.

  10. 10 Max Kleiber Says:

    I don’t see any highlighting, either…

  11. 11 Delu Elytis Says:

    Oooh, nice and yellow. ^^

I’d like a more advanced search on the blog tho. Search comments and bring those up with a specific word, or search on all comments by Lindens or any commenter in a blog post, etc. Wouldn’t need to scroll trough a few hundred messages then.

  12. 12 Jesse Malthus Says:

Ravanne: Although you’re totally off topic, communication and coding are totally different things that have no real overlapping responsibilities. Hence, Torley can add features to the blog without impacting the speed of work on the database and search features.
And to those not seeing highlighting: What browser? Works fine here on Firefox (Bon Echo) 2.0

  13. 13 Torley Linden Says:

    Bryon… mebbe. Or PURPLE!

Otenth, hrmmm wonder why that is, I haven’t tweaked anything else with it. What feed URL are you subscribed to? I use Bloglines too.

Ravanne, as it says right above the comment box: please don’t post off-topic comments. This is something I’ve repeated many times, please suggest how we can improve visibility of questions I’ve answered before to make them easier for you to find. That would be a blog improvement, and on-topic. :)

Like it says on the right in red, we don’t have an ETA on when Search will be fixed. I want it badly myself, I’m an explorer.

And like I previously mentioned, re: Classifieds,

Related, we’ve heard questions about the possibility of not charging parcel listing fees (as found in About Land > Options tab as “Show in Search > Places”) and Classifieds this week due to Search being broken. We’re certainly going to examine what we can do to help.

I do want to explain there are a variety of Lindens working on different things. Across the last stretch, I got many requests, particularly in the last few days, saying “Lindens aren’t replying to comments on the blog! Or… if they are, they’re hard to find!”

My own personal duties include the Official Linden Blog, so this is why highlighting comments got done. I’m not a Dev — I’m on the Community Team. I’ve forwarded a lot of feedback to our Development Team, as well as replied to hundreds of questions today, including those on Linden Answers.

I’ve promised to post news whenever I get it — unfortunately, I’ve no updates to report on those issues. Today, I did blog about Partnerships being fixed, which, while not important to some, was certainly important to others. It’s also worth mentioning I provided frequent updates in the last few days, as shown on the Grid Status Updates.

So there’s no ambiguity: when there’s new info, I’ll post it ASAP. If you have any doubts about this, please feel free to check out my forum posting history. I’m prolific and obsessive because I don’t want to leave you out of the loop, and know if I was in your position, I’d feel the same way. And I have been, and continue to be… many, many times.

I hope you can see my comments with a yellow background; if you don’t, let me know your web browser and version. You too, Max!

Thanx for your patience and understanding, and please show this to anyone else who asks. =o)

Delu, yes, me too… I know there are plugins to do that, let’s see if we can get it done here. GREAT IDEA… I’ll dig further. *adds issue to stack*

  14. 14 Torley Linden Says:

    Thanx for explainin’ that, Jesse.

BTW, I have noticed that after refreshing this page several times, my comments are sometimes unhighlighted after some page loads. So that may be an issue — I’ll investigate further.

  15. 15 Shadow Darius Wolf, Esq. (ShadowD Walcott inworld) Says:

    @Torley:

Think you could make the highlight color a little more intense? On many LCD displays (mine included) the yellow highlight is so faint that it’s just /barely/ visible, if at all (shows up fine on CRTs, though).

If you’re going to highlight, then use a nice strong dayglow yellow. ;)

    Take care!

  16. 16 Torley Linden Says:

Shadow, wish I could see what it looked like on your screen. I’m on an LCD, but admittedly, quite high-contrast. We’re open to changing it if it’s not visible enough (while not being an eyesore), else, we can go the RGB = 255, 255, 0 route. ;) T’care too!

  17. 17 Shadow Darius Wolf, Esq. (ShadowD Walcott inworld) Says:

    I’d suggest RGB(255, 255, 96). Bright yellow, but not quite OMGYELLOW!!!1!11!one!!eleven!1 ;)

    Take care!

  18. 18 Ravanne Sullivan Says:

I started my reply on topic, your comments are not highlighted, they look exactly like all the other comments. IE7 is my browser.

As to expanding and sort of going off-topic, it is relevant if you consider highlighting to be a way to pass more information to us which does not appear to be happening, we have no place else to bring up these issues. You restrict us to only the topic YOU want without giving us a valid outlet for bringing up things beyond that.

  19. 19 SignpostMarv Says:

I’d suggest a 3 pixel dashed border with an 80 pixel wide watermarked SL Hand logo as a background image (don’t forget to set those background-repeat:no-repeat;, background-position and padding flags) in the bottom left corner of the comment box, possibly with or without enough padding to make it more noticable.

  20. 20 Lynn Kukulcan Says:

I use CRT Displays because I have seen many LCD’s have the problem you mentioned. I have decided I can’t get good enough color on an LCD to use it the way I do, so I stick to my CRT’s. Including this brand new CRT I have on my PC right now. ^.^

    Lynn Kukulcan

  21. 21 Canne Thewphaingarm Says:

Is there any possibility of us customizing how we see the highlights?
I’m fine with them as is, but there might be a few lindens who have issues with that shade of yellow. (it might hurt their eyes or be hard to see with their own customized color schemes for website viewing)

  22. 22 Cari Deluca Says:

Thats very nice, but it seems rather useless since you are limiting nearly all comments on all your posts. Why are you doing this? I really don’t understand this, and really don’t want to believe that you don’t value our input. Could you please explain the reasoning behind this change?

  23. 23 Random Blankes Says:

Just did a side-by-side comparison with IE6 and Firefox. I’m using a new LCD (Merry Christmas to me!), and the highlight is definitely brighter in Firefox, but both are very visible.

And I hate yellow. How about green?

  24. 24 Otenth Says:

Thanks Torley, the feed I’m using is http://blog.secondlife.com/feed/. I used Bloglines just now to look for any feeds at blog.secondlife.com, and these four are what I got (with the latest entry dates and times):

It looks like feedburner is the way to go, but the comments feed seems to be doing just fine.

  25. 25 Dedric Mauriac Says:

The yellow is a bit faint on my LCD as well. I do have a suggestions though. Rather then making the yellow more intense…

    Adding a thick border on the left of the comment. border-left: 7px solid watermelon;

Add an icon next to the commentors name of the second life hand.

Highlight the name of the poster in a different color.

Have a set of links just below the post to take you down direct to each linden comment.

  26. 26 Samuel Patterson Says:

Being a blogger myself, I realize the issues you are probably facing with comment spam, and I just want to thank you for taking the time to review the comments instead of completely turning them off!

  27. 27 Fenrir Reitveld Says:

C’mon people, the BLINK tag was put in there because we were supposed to use it!

  28. 28 Bella Rosencrans Says:

That’s nice. And I see the highlighting fine.

That should definately help filter out some of the stuff I don’t need or want to read…

  29. 29 Zonax Delorean Says:

Yes, I also ask, like Cari, if this blog is supposed to be ‘communication with Lindens’, why are so many comments, threads closed or not even opened from the start?
    How is this communication?

Lindens closed the forums, because they said ‘blog will be that and much better for communications’.

  30. 30 Nikkie Jua Says:

    Hiya all…

I see the yellow just fine. LCD screen and IE 7. Works fine for me. I think it’s better this way, so I look for answers faster between all the comments of fellow SL’ers….

Keep up the good work…. Still love SL even though it’s not the way it suppose to be right now..

    Nikkie

  31. 31 Harvey Says:

    Much better Torley, thanks

  32. 32 Sage V. Says:

Wow, at least I’ll be able to find Linden comments, since I can’t find anything in world with the search function broken! Happy Day!! What a great new feature!!

  33. 33 Zi Ree Says:

Closing comments on announcement posts is indeed better communication.

  34. 34 Liz Ferlinghetti Says:

Much easier to read and find comments from Lindens. I’m using IE7 and an LCD and it all shows up fine.

  35. 35 Kat Sullivan Says:

its great but without sounding like a typical english moaner, isnt there bigger fish to fry at the moment, i.e thesearch function from which i and many other business people are losing business from

  36. 36 ninjafoo Ng Says:

    Much better :D

  37. 37 Jamie David Says:

Can we please have a posting on the situation. How long before life can be normal again?

  38. 38 Katja Karski Says:

If you wanted people to keep their posts on topic, then you should not have moved to a blog format.

Forum formats allow the more important topics with most community interest to remain at the top, while posts like this fade away into insignificance. The Blog format though, necessitates that people keep posting their concerns, in order to keep them from being buried or obscured by far less important stuff.

Unresolved issues will keep being posted on whatever blog post is at the top, because people want you to keep their concerns in mind, and you have only your choice of format to blame for that.

If only people would just get the message that Lindens will do what they want to do, in the order that they want to do it, regardless of customer demand. We should all just get it through our heads that Second Life is being fattened up with eyeballs to make it more attractive to corporate investment, and that we don’t really matter beyond the exaggerated statistics we allow them to generate based on our involvement here.

Our relationship with LL is unrequited love. We want you to love us back, but you just won’t. So far you’ve been able to get away with it, but with every cold shoulder, we get closer to the day when we finally wake up to ourselves, and realise we’ve wasted our time.

Enjoy being the hottest on the block as long as you can LL, for one day you too will be old and wrinkled, and we’ll be scratching our dollars down someone else’s back.

  39. 39 Ravanne Sullivan Says:

“And like I previously mentioned, re: Classifieds,

Related, we’ve heard questions about the possibility of not charging parcel listing fees (as found in About Land > Options tab as “Show in Search > Places”) and Classifieds this week due to Search being broken. We’re certainly going to examine what we can do to help.”

And what about non parcel classifieds? Something that is vital to most businesses in SL and which you have not addressed at all? Many business owners have many thousands of L$ invested in these ads and they are now worthless as the only thing that can be searched is the first word of the ad title. Please don’t reference the above quote as you having addressed this when you have not done so. I’m sorry if this is off-topic but we have been getting nothing but weasel words or the silent treatment on this here and everywhere else.

  40. 40 Shipper Says:

    TIME:

Why have we gone to PST as opposed to SLT?

In the UK and Europe we don’t work to PST.

  41. 41 Slartibartfast Majikthise Says:

Some people might be colorblind Torley. And as stated above, some humans just plain hate a given color, which is kinda like saying “I hate fingers”. Too bad - everybody’s got 10 of them so you’ve gotta learn to live with it.

If people can’t see the yellow, go with your standard Watermelinden colors, shocking MAGENTA/GREEN. That should stand out! Wait - I’ll brb, my eyeballs just ran off screaming for some reason. ;-)

  42. 42 dragonfan hooper Says:

this is a nice feature to have but you’re cool torley i won’t make you mad at all.

  43. 43 Ace Albion Says:

I see no highlights, but I have system colours forced on my browser :) And no purple for angry stuff! Purple brings red and blue together, it’s a colour of sharing and love and understanding.

  44. 44 brian roop Says:

This is a business relationship since the day they took my money, and I am the customer. If I am dissatisfied I will post anywhere I can find a place to do it. God knows LL keeps them limited enough. When are we getting the Search function back?

  45. 45 Dan Doyle Says:

Thank you for the nice little updates but I think rather then making the blog look nice everyone here would rather you work on fixing the search issues in game. As well as now today I and some others have not gotten the stipend payment…… Come on Guys get it right please we are spending alot of money and not getting the service for it.

  46. 46 Archer Braun Says:

Ummm…I don’t see any “colors” besides the “hot notices” in red. But then again, I’m on a mac that keeps getting crashed every 20 minutes since the upgrade. *sigh*

  47. 47 Archer Braun Says:

Ahhh…there we go…apparently works with firefox…and not safari.

  48. 48 Ann Says:

I don’t see anything highlighted. :-( I’m using Firefox 2.0 for Windows and a standard monitor.

  49. 49 Abdiel Nimbus Says:

Nice thing. Makes it easier indeed to find those Linden posts. :)
And the color is just fine with me. (FF2,XP,CRT)

  50. 50 Zhirow Says:

    I like the new highlighting!

But I see ALOT of whining and complaining. There’s about a million different blogging and message boards on the ‘Net, if you want to complain start one. Otherwise, quit complaining. I have an annual account and I’m not whining. If your so dissatisfied, freakin’ leave already. I’m frankly tired of all the whining. Torley has said he’s not on the Dev team, he’s in communication. For those of you too dense to understand what “Dev” means, it means DEVELOPEMENT team. they’re the guys working on the prolems. I don’t blame Torley for working on highlighting, with all the off topic posts, I can’t find anything unless its highlighted. Noones forcing you to stay in SL, LL has never said please stay and keep paying us or else. They’ll fix it asap, if you didn’t hear the Townhall this month, try listening to it, they’re asking for help, for more people to program, if you can’t program then shut up and stop complaining, it’s hard work and for all the whining, I don’t see anyone making anything better at the moment. But if you do have something then by all means, advertise it and take the rest of the complainers with you. This entire section is on communication, when there’s news you’ll get it, otherwise try doing something more constructive then constantly moaning and groaning. LL didn’t break the system on purpose, they’re trying to improve YOUR experience, if they just let the system stay antiquated you’d still be complaining. Let Torley do his job and communicate with us, if there’s news great, if not then at least I’d like to hear something else that might be helpful or useful.

Sorry about that Torley, but I hate seeing someone abused on a blog or forum for something they can’t control. It’s people like that that make the internet suck.

I’m not in love with LL but I don’t hate them either, they do the best they can with what they have, they need more tech help right now, so why don’t some of you be part of the solution? Your no better then the groups that purposely disrupt and crash the grid if all you do is complain and clog the boards/blogs.

Anyway, thanks LL for fixing the partnering, one small step for Avi’s, one teeny tiny step for the Grid and all that….

    :-)

  51. 51 Gryff Says:

I like the highlighting - nice!
Seems that whatever you do people will complain (”why didn’t you do something else?”, “I don’t like yellow”, etc).
I’m as upset as anyone else by the current problems, but I don’t expect that Torley will be able to solve it all by not highlighting blog entries!
Keep up the good work Torley - much appreciated.

  52. 52 Adri Saarinen Says:

I like the highlights! I agree that some sort of border would solve the ‘can’t see on my LCD’ problems.

I know the dev team is working hard, too. Please let them know we’re thinking of them and we appreciate their work even though they’re not as visible as the communicator Lindens! :)

  53. 53 Tiger Crossing Says:

Torley, for those people that use the emailed blog reports as the first, and sometimes main, gateway to Linden Lab info, it would be nice if the poster’s name was included below the title, as it is in the webpage.

I mean, purple and green footprints tell me when YOU post, but the others, unless they post their names IN the entry, are faceless to me unless I follow through to the web.

If automatic sigs aren’t an option of the software, perhaps a general “add your name to the bottom” guideline for posters would be in order.

    Thanks,
    ~ Tiger Crossing

  54. 54 Jimmy Stonehill Says:

@Shipper - Isn’t PST and SLT the same thing

I see it just fine on mine also. (CRT,XP,IE7)

I know everyone is frustrated and we all want answers. Lets hope they come soon. Until then I am going to have to keep faith that all is being done that can be to resolve ongoing issues.

I want to believe lol :D

  55. 55 Martin McConnell Says:

I like that the highlight is attached to your login and appears in other blog posts. I went back to a couple of blog topics and found some of your comments I had missed before.

Hmmm, (1) email that blog has changed - check. (2) quick reference topics on side - check. (3) highlighted Linden comment - check (3) burst symbol to get attention - check, (4) Blog topics on login splash screen - check, What else is there that would communicate with us and disciminate information? Didn’t I see a XML feed for private websites to show news? If so, then check mate. You are done.

  56. 56 Luciftias Says:

So far you’ve been able to get away with it, but with every cold shoulder, we get closer to the day when we finally wake up to ourselves, and realise we’ve wasted our time.

This comment made me laugh so hard…thanks…there really isn’t anything funnier than an empty threat.

  57. 57 RickiLake Says:

I think it’s funny how half the posts on here have NOTHING to do with the topic. The topic being HIGHLIGHTED LINDEN COMMENTS. And really, do you NEED comments enabled on this topic? I mean, it’s really more like a new feature announcement.
“Hi, Linden comments are now highlighted! See the example and send a message to me if it doesn’t work”. That’s really all that’s necessary. There isn’t too much to comment on, so keep it short and sweet.
Then leave comments closed, because there are more and more whiners coming on to whine about whatever is irking them. Yes, I totally agree that search being down is a bitch, for so many reasons. But…Whining is part of what the forums are for. The blog is for seeing what’s new in the world of LL. See my comment here? TOTALLY unecessary. As are most of these. :D
Personally, I don’t like yellow, but I still find it helpful to be able to pick out Linden comments at a glance, so I’m not going to complain about it. I spend a very small FRACTION of the time I spend in SL reading the blogs, so seeing yellow (oh no!) for about 3 seconds isn’t gonna kill me. Nor am I going to suggest any ways to “improve” it. I think it’s great you have highlighting now, and the way you chose to implement it works just swell. I wouldn’t change a thing. After all, you can’t please all of the people all of the time, but you can please some of the people some of the time.

  58. 58 Hyperstar Tsuki Says:

torely, you’re a fruit, no offense… I’m sure you get that joke.

  59. 59 Max Kleiber Says:

I’m now updated to Firefox 2..
Seems it was a matter of confusion.
I was looking for highlighted TEXT, not a background colour.

Where it says “We value free expression…” is what I would consider highlighted, not a different background colour, which incidentally shows as very, very pale pink on the old HP laptop I use for reading this.

  60. 60 Seola Sassoon Says:

    @ Shipper
    “”"”TIME:

Why have we gone to PST as opposed to SLT?

In the UK and Europe we don’t work to PST.”"”"

PST is SLT. It was on some weird G-8 thing or whatever. Which means weird to me of course because I don’t know what the heck that meant. PST is Pacific Standard Time which is the time zone for California and SLT.

  61. 61 Seola Sassoon Says:

(Clarify, it’s the time zone for California as we in America see it. I live in Mountain, others in Central, and others in East.)

  62. 62 Torley Linden Says:

Re: comment highlighting not appearing in IE7 and Safari etc., they appear here for me. I suspect this may actually be a prob with our blog being load-balanced across different servers and not syncing up. Jose and I will follow this further, but try reloading this page several times. Linden comments are currently highlighted with a yellow background.

@Marv: sounds like that’d help us be more visual.

At current time, I don’t know an easier way to customize highlights. We are open to changing the color, yellow was partially chosen because of the sun *points above* and “traditional” highlighter pen color. Others which match our unified aesthetic are welcome too.

@Otenth: Thanx, going to investigate that “feed latency” further…

@Dedric: Good ideas, meshes with Marv’s too. We can boost it up.

@Tiger: thanx, I checked with FeedBurner (who does our emailed blog reports) awhile back about showing author names on multi-author blogs; there’s a way to do it, it’s on the to-do list, I want it a lot. :)

More rice farmering for me to do, I’m juggling a variety of more issues… I’ll be checking back here regularly!

  63. 63 Candide LeMay Says:

I’m so glad you guys are slowly getting back to where the forums were before, functionality-wise. There’s nothing developers like to do more than reinventing the wheel, badly *rolls eyes*

  64. 64 Daaneth Kivioq Says:

    Bah!
    Is not highlighted Enough!!

Need Pink background, with 36 point Comic Sans text in Electric Green!!

    Now THAT would be highlighting…

  65. 65 Nou Corleone Says:

oki! New update :) why no info on the blog???????????

  66. 66 Zonax Delorean Says:

It seems that there’s a new SL version out, but no mention of it on the blog. What’s going on?

  67. 67 Joshua Nightshade Says:

Okay, yeah, this is all fine and awesome, but what does this have to do with Search not being fixed, or the classifieds ads you keep accepting money for that don’t work and won’t be refunded, etc?

Maybe those should be fixed before you worry about highlighting.

  68. 68 Andy Says:

And the new SL Mac version *still* has a memory leak:

2006-12-05 19:55:28.880 Second Life[2919] *** _NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0×18caa730 of class NSView autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking

I’m guessing this is adding to the sluggishness of this client. Please, please get this fixed!

Sorry to grumble … keep up the hard work :-)

  69. 69 Kathrine Wirtanen Says:

Hmm slightly off topic but is anyone else there over last 2 days since weekend, realise you probably haven’t found a fix yet for all the problems, but hearing nothing about the problems being worked at sucks a lot we are coming up to a week my SL has been non functional, my workaround for others experiencing same difficulties is teleport to where you want to go, then crash, which occurs 90% of the time, then log back in at last location, click away mode, wait an hour for people and walls to be visible, simple.
Or now I find clicking the WoW, COH or Sociotron icon on my computer instead of SL seems to work too.

  70. 70 Zonax Delorean Says:

A new version is out, but search is still not working. I’m paying for Classifieds and land listing, but not getting any service :-(

Please fix this and give compensation, Lindens!

  71. 71 Torley Linden Says:

Friendly greetings! I’m posting blog updates ASAP as I get news. If there’s no update, consider there to be no news yet — behind-the-scenes, I’ve been inquiring about many topics of relevance, I’m at least as curious as many of you are.

I just posted about the new Second Life update too, I needed to confirm details with Devs and QA.

Gentle reminder that like it says in big text on the comment box, please don’t post off-topic comments here. I really want to keep this thread open for blog suggestions; it’s important to better the Official Linden Blog, especially because it’s how we primarily deliver our updates, including on the Second Life login screen!

Just like before, there’ll be future blog entries open for comments and discussion on a variety of topics, including many in response to Resi concerns.

Hi Torley, sorry about my off-topic post above but (a) comments are closed on the new version thread and (b) bug reports just disappear off into the ether these days … gone is the golden era of a response to a bug report :-( Mac owners are getting a little unhappy …

  73. 73 Torley Linden Says:

Hey Andy, your questions should be in a FAQ!

So everyone who reads this knows, ’cause I want you to know:

    (a) We close comments on informational posts not meant for discussion; I can’t help much here with support issues either or bugs, best thing is to contact Support like it says under the comment box and on the right sidebar of our blog, or file a bug report inworld… Help menu > Report Bug.

    (b) Speaking of bugs, we usually get 100s of bug reports a day, too many to reply personally to. They’re all read. I remember getting “Thank you. Bug entered.” replies too… the world’s grown a lot, so I hope you’ll understand how time-prohibitive it can be. Even I’m getting to the point where I can’t reply to all my personal emails.

If you have any suggestions to streamline our workloads so we can be more responsive and help you better, it’s appreciated.

I use Macs too, if you’ve already sent some Mac-specific bugs in with solid repros, thanx!

Further hot issues I’ll blog about here, as I’ve been doing — I can’t promise I’ll get each and every single one personally, but I’ll grab as many as possible, and inform fellow Lindens in various expertises to blog too.

Behind-the-scenes I’m also sorting through mounds of email. It’s like one extremely wideband scanner…

I have worked in a project management position and we gave regular reports to our stakeholders on the status of their project EVEN if the update basically said “No canges since last update.”

Nothing and I repeat NOTHING will anger a customer more than a lack of timely communication, real or perceived. Please give us updates even if their is no change since the last update so that we do not feel abandoned. And don’t just tuck your update as a comment deep inside some BLOG posting, put it right out front on the main BLOG page so it can be easily seen, you’ll find the general leval of hostility will go down substantialy.

I dont see the point when you turn off comments on virtually ALL blog posts so no one can discuss anything.

  76. 76 Martha Glitter Says:

Might I suggest not necessarily highlighting the comment background but, perhaps, its border or header? Anything on yellow is quite hard to read, especially for those that may be visually impared (even slightly) and can be nullified by older flourescent lighting (the kind with a yellowish tint to it).

If you feel the background HLs are best (or only possibility) then maybe white on black (or blue or any other dark color)? Try taking a lok at winblows themes for visually impared (three or four come standard with winblows 98 to xp), they are all, basically, reversed F/B colors.

See, I can try being helpful on occasion :lolz:

  77. 77 Martha Glitter Says:

dang, just went thru and read one i mised that pretty much suggested what i just did - how bout highlighting GOOD posts, too :-/ mebbe a little gold star by the ones that meet the blog guidelines criteria?

:grumbles: try ta be helpful and miss one stinkin post… ~sigh~

  78. 78 Mojavewolfpup Hearn Says:

wandarich: it’s called censorship. that’s the whole purpose of this blog. I bet this post is going to be “awaiting moderation” as any I have made always are.

guess having a opinion in a sea of “aww, good job!” and other brown nosing isn’t allowed.

Is anyone else have problems with land purchases. I purchased parcel 228.69.26 from Jenna Fairplay on 12-04-06. She took the funds from my account. While I was visiting the site someone else told me he had purchased the same parcel the day before. By the end of the day, the parcel had been sold again to someone else. I have been unable to contact her although I have sent her several IM. She is not responding. It appears to me that Jenna Fairplay is not playing the game fairly and I resent the fact that she took my money, did not deed me the parcel. No matter how you put it, when you take money from someone and don’t deliver the goods. I consider this theft and Jenna, this is not playing fair.

  80. 80 Cristiano Midnight Says:

    Torley,

The highlighting is a great improvement - it made it very simple to scan the ocean of comments and find yours within it. I still think that a blog is ill suited for the volume of feedback that is posted to this one, but this definitely does make it more useable. The important part is to make sure that Lindens do actually respond to the comments, or the highlighting won’t be of much use.

  83. 83 drangea lyndhurst Says:

It’s very nice to have the highlight feature. However, it seems almost crazy to be patting ourselves on the back for this when the world has been brought to its knees and can’t get up. Another thing that seems wierd is the tone in which the Lindens address these issues. They sound like Teletubbies. We wuv you and we are deepwy concerned! (big hug!) I suggest we put the Blog Highlights Team to work on the Search Places Team.

  84. 84 Solar Legion Says:

I suggest we let the Lindens do their work and not tell the different programming departments what to do.

I look at it this way: I do not want someone whose coding expertise is in web based messaging systems like Blogs working on the client program. They’ll mess it up.

  85. 85 drangea lyndhurst Says:

    hello, i was kidding!

  86. 86 wandarich Says:

please TURN OFF pingbacks - its becoming a REAL pain to have to scroll though endless [...]LL wrote something i already read[...] one liners in a post that already has hundreds of replies.

We don’t need this and I’m sure LL don’t need it either.

  87. 87 Weston MA Says:

I also agree that the highlighting is great, I think it shows how the Lindens feel about making life easier for the users.

I Googled for something completely different, but found your page…and have to say thanks. nice read.

  89. 89 Janet Rossini Says:

I’m glad to see these improvements. Let me suggest, please, an improvement that would give me comfort if nothing else. I’ll take as an example, the recent vanishing of the main secondlife page “behind the status page.”

I would guess that this came about because someone made a mistake of some kind. If this example won’t serve, I’m sure there are plenty of problems that _are_ due to mistakes.

Now we are all human, and so we all make mistakes. What makes things get better over time, though, is when we learn from mistakes. To me, learning to “try harder” or “be more careful” isn’t learning at all. If anything, we should have learned by now that trying harder and being more careful don’t stop our mistakes for very long, if at all.

What would give me more confidence in our future here in SL would be to hear, for some or all problems, that they are being treated sincerely as opportunities to learn, to put some kind of automated tests in place, or to make other improvements to the process of changing SL as time goes on.

I think it is sometimes called “root cause analysis”, and I’d like to know that you use an approach like that, and I’d like to hear something about the lessons learned, not just apologies “for the inconvenience”.

I know you’d like to give me, and residents like me, more comfort and confidence. I’m sure it’s at the top of your priority list. Here’s an idea that will do that and actually improve the work at the same time!

    Thanks!
