[UPDATE] Estate-to-estate teleports should be fixed
Friday, December 1st, 2006 at 6:32 PM by: Torley[Dec. 7 @ 5:16 PM PST] This should be fixed. Please use Help menu > Report Bug with the names of the to/from Estates (also called islands) if you’re still experiencing the below problem.
We have a known issue where trying to teleport from one Estate to another Estate (private island), even if you’re allowed there, may result in the following error:
Could not teleport. You are not allowed into the destination.
We know what’s wrong here, and are going to fix it. In the meantime, try this:
Teleport from the Estate to the Mainland, into a region like Plum. Then, teleport to the other Estate you want to enter.
Please comment if this works or doesn’t work for you.

[...] [6:34 PM PST] I made a dedicated teleport workaround post. [...]
December 1st, 2006 at 6:36 PM
This is working for me (teleporting from Island to mainland to Island, which is a pain as I live on an island) but not for my friends.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:36 PM
Worked for me. Not planning to try it again unless I have to.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:37 PM
Thanxx Jaxx!
December 1st, 2006 at 6:42 PM
Hmm…perhaps if I stick a piece of duct-tape on my screen, the search feature will start working again.
Jesus.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:43 PM
Not working for me. I tried going from Extreme to Ahern, and was blocked. Couldn’t TP to home location, either, and had to relog to break out of it.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:47 PM
If it’s not working, please provide details as Doodles did — where to/from you’re wanting to go. There may be other issues we’ll investigate.
We’ll ultimately have a better fix; this is just a workaround.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:49 PM
You Lindens may be having a hell of a week… Good luck with the fixes!
December 1st, 2006 at 6:54 PM
Yesterday when I had this problem I contacted live help. A Linden whose name I forget teleported me to help island. I was then able to teleport back to my home in Kepler and things seemed to be resolved.
I have this problem again today and contacted live help again (prior to this blog being posted) and got a helper who must have had a bad day. She wasn’t very helpful and didn’t even know about this issue.
Anyway, I tried to teleport to help island and wasn’t even allowed to do that. So I gave up and relogged.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:56 PM
I found something else that works. Everything but actual houses are unavailable it seems so if you search under all and type what you want the place usually has a classified spot, That seems to work. Also if they don’t try to see if that place has a group and look in the picks of the profile leader! Its usually there and you now can teleport! :3
December 1st, 2006 at 6:56 PM
Worked from me. I went from Caledon II to Shark, and then to Ramos Isle.
However, in other news — about five minutes ago things started to slow down significantly where I am (the Caledon region), to the point where I have changed clothes and do not see them rezzing, I cannot create attachments, etc.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:59 PM
Duct tape doesn’t work unless you clean the whiteout from the last upgrade off first.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:59 PM
You must be joking to offer this as an acceptable work around. Please correct the issue, and test these things before deployment of software on the production grid from preview. Thank you.
December 1st, 2006 at 6:59 PM
I know it’s a little off-topic but a current list of what’s working, what’s not and what LL would like us to do would be great..
I lost something from my inventory last night.. Should I be patient and hope it comes back? Support@ll.com? Live Help? Also, digeut has crashed a few times tonight - same questions..
Thanks!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:00 PM
I cannot teleport from Mu (mainland) to Moulin Rouge (island).
December 1st, 2006 at 7:03 PM
Can’t get from Caraboo to Dasom, to The Island, to Boardman, to… well, anywhere on the mainland I try!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:03 PM
Right now I am stuck in Limbo (yes that’s its name) Isle of Wyrms and the message is:
Could Not Teleport.
Sorry, but the system was unable to complete your teleport request in a timely fashion. Please try again in a few minutes.
I also cannot detach certain items of my inventrory either right now. I have relogged a few times and cleared my cache as well.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:05 PM
As I said the other day, this is by far the worst the UG pains I have ever seen. Many of these issues were showing up on the Beta Grid, but nobody at LL must have taken them seriously. And some did not show up until all the ppl came onto it on Wed. By then it was too late.
I have a suggestion, one, put someone on the help desk on Beta Grid to take comments at least. Take down all fences on Beta grid, make it totally accessable. Allow the transfer of item created, not purchased, from Beta to Main Grid. Last but not least, require users of Beta t fill out a survey at least once a calendar week. The created items transfer might get more experienced players on it, and the survey and no fences might get the lurkers off.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:06 PM
Doesn’t work.
BTW, the right thing to do on the downing of SEARCH>PLACES is not to bill the $30 fee on Tuesday.
Most people get most of their sales from SEARCH
December 1st, 2006 at 7:07 PM
I could not directly tp from Spaceport Alpha to Elf Harbour. Map did not work, so I could not use that to tp to mainland. Landmarks had disappeared from inventory, so couldn’t those that to tp to mainland (or anywhere else). My workaround was to quit and change my login to my home.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:07 PM
it seems to be intermittent, I’ve tried the classifieds thing (tpping to classifieds spots)didnt work and had to log out completely other times it works from pvt islands to mainland and pvt to pvt. Just seems funky and no constancy but then thats all par tof the fun
December 1st, 2006 at 7:08 PM
And now I’ve got the same avatar/money/inventory issues I had before.
I sympathize, Mr./Ms. Neva. I’ve not made any sales since the UG.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:09 PM
Not a teleport issue, but money (paying things, receiving funds) seems to be broke - again.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:11 PM
Off-topic, but one out of two attemps I can’t log-in, when I do I just end up invisible again with all the resulting side-effects :(.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:12 PM
I have to agree with Chance Unknown regarding that there should be more testing done before the release of an update.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:14 PM
(Thanx for what’s useful thus far, I’ll be checking on things periodically and aggregating issues! Please don’t post off-topic stuff like the big bold text above the Comment box says.

December 1st, 2006 at 7:15 PM
I am unable to use the teleport at this time. teleport is NOT working. unable to teleport into mainland. map land mark search is no not working. Land mark beakons are not showing. The grid load in NOT calming down as you guys keep saying. As much as I respect LL and as patient as I have been in the last four months, my patients is wearing thin. also SL is lagging badly and it is getting worse.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:15 PM
dont know if this has been mentioned but i just noticed if i go to prefrences communications tab it says to log in to change in the busy message area and i cant enable logging of im and chat
could this somehow be related to the database issues
i appreciate your attempts to fix things
December 1st, 2006 at 7:16 PM
This workaround is of little use to me at the moment as I can not TP between two mainland locations. SL is falling apart, its time to take it down and fix it.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:16 PM
FYI: A variety of folks are stuck in Samoa. No TPs — to the mainland or to other islands — seem to be working. All TPs fail at “Resolving Destination” and time out.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:17 PM
Well, I’ve been an avid user of second life since march of this year. But now I think i’m done. This is just plain crap. It’s obvious the test or “beta” grid has no significance in perparation for an upgrade. Horrible Horrible horrible. TP’s don’t work, no money showing, anything non prim is not showing, please. give me back 1.12 and maybe I’ll stick around.

Thing is, they *are* tested on the beta grid. We just never get enough user load over there to really tell what’s going to happen?
Did you see any of these things on your last trip to the beta grid?
December 1st, 2006 at 7:17 PM
Got home, but discovered a male friend now has breasts. He informs me that I do too. Weirder and weirder!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:18 PM
Teleport is not working at all, now. Am logging off, ’cause SL isn’t as fun when I can’t see myself. Maybe I’m vain!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:20 PM
Whoa…not only can’t I teleport…but the whole grid seems to be down for me. I’ve logged out, but can’t get in..and the reason I logged out was that I couldn’t take off any clothing to change. A friend had nothing in her folders…looks like this is going to be The Weekend That Never Was.
Hope the Lindens come in to at least get us up and running…if not totally repaird. HELP!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:20 PM
OMG anything else gonna go wrong why cant you test these on a test server never have i seen a game so poorly deployed as this. Perhaps you spend a lil time working on fixing things instead of worring about publicizing what a wonderful game. Ive lost over 10k in stuff and your wonderful live help says be patient im patient but this is getting ridiculous!!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:21 PM
Okay.
1. Relogged into Meeting Island, where my home location is.
2. Successfully TP’d to Ahern.
3. Tried to locate Sheridan on map. Failed.
4. Offered TP from friend on Sheridan. Failed.
5. Offered TP from friend on Furnation Reia. Failed.
6. Tried to find Sheridan on Map. No joy. You turned Search off. THX GUYZ
7. Was able to map to location of friend who allows me to find same on map. Failed to teleport.
8. No people indicators on any sim when looking at Map.
9. Tried again. Closed and reloaded SL, resolving to home location. No body, linden, or listing of anything in Friends.
10. Relogged third time. Repeated steps 1-3. Successful in getting to Sheridan.
I’m trying to be patient here, honest. I’ve been on SL for over two years. But damned if I don’t have more problems from all these updates than I’ve ever hand from all the griefers combined.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:21 PM
I take it back! Speed, money, teleport and ability to dress myself like a real grown-up are all back, for both of my avatars. Yay!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:22 PM
I try to tp to one of those new islands, for example Orientation Island 5, I try to tp there and I get that exact message…….even if there are other peopel there…and all of those other new small islands do the same, but any other place works fine…
December 1st, 2006 at 7:23 PM
After relogging again and flushing my cache in an attempt to be able to teleport when I am back in world, I now find that my avatar is invisble with no group or name showing, only my prim clothes are visible.
Things seem to be degenerating each time I relog in.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:23 PM
Gone down hill quickly in the last hour - missing inventory, missing me, and not able tp - the work around WAS working, but now I can not get off of a private sim unless I get a tp from someone else.

this is normal. The default avatar is female (Ruth). When your parameters are properly loaded, you’ll deRuth.
@Torley: I bug reported this the other day, but I’m not seeing anyone else reporting it: on sim crossings I’ll frequently go flying for up to a minute. If I am not logged off by the experience, My attachments are all scrambled. Is *anyone* else out there experiencing this?
December 1st, 2006 at 7:24 PM
Hey, you know,
December 1st, 2006 at 7:26 PM
so I decided to unistall SL and reinstall - at least now I am back, so are my lindens (yes yes, I had cleaned my cache). Inventory has returned
December 1st, 2006 at 7:27 PM
Workaround for tp issues did not work. I still get the same message “You Are Not allowed in the destination.”
December 1st, 2006 at 7:29 PM
your dedicated teleport workaround is just great…how about a dedicated workaround for the fact I can’t see my own avatar, all my money is gone, anything I create or save or gets sent to me disappears from my inventory, and despite emails to support, consierge, calling the office and being on hold for half an hour and then being shunted into some sort of voicemail hell…and contacting lifehelp, and entering a dozen bug reports…the only thing I have gotten is lindens on live help copying and pasting a link to the blog…
Well your blog is full of misinformation, and just plain baloney…database issues fixed???…tell me another one…
I own a sim’s worth of land..and am now missing two hundred thousand lindens…and it seems all of my land that was in my own name…since it isnt visible when I pull up “my land”…
anyone going to do anything about it..??????…or are you going to tell me that the database is fixed…?
TM
December 1st, 2006 at 7:31 PM
oh..and as for posting off topic…you aren’t allowing posts on the database blog entry…so where am I supposed to post…
December 1st, 2006 at 7:39 PM
I saw almost every one of the issues on Beta, including the scrambled attachments, and reported them. But now, Beta Grid is full of ppl with houses and fences, all looking for a quiet place to have sex it seems.
Man of the problems, including missing water and missing sims, showed up as soon as the residents started showing up and buying land. I tried in vain to reach a Linden that morning by 0730 SL time, but none, not one, showed up online on Beta Grid.
This UG was done without any real testing at all.
I have one last idea to add, how about just taking SL down once in a while, for ” Maint” but do nothing to it. Use that to get ppl on the Beta Grid.

Hey, you know, I have to respond to one of the other aticles, from one of the Lindens complaining about negative posts.
Over the last couple of months we’ve been dealing with missing images, grid attacks, and now these database problems which cause all kinds of crazy issues. Tonight it’s almost impossible to do anything in world.
The database problems are not knew, either, those have been going on at least a couple of weeks. Instead of getting better with a new release, as a user might hope, things seem much worse.
I understand that you all have been dealing with these problems too and must be very frustrated. I work in Ops for an Internet company and I know how it goes, believe me. But the bottom line is that you all are paid to deal with these problems. Some of the people who are complaining not only are not paid to use SL, they pay to use it, and those fees are what pay your salaries.
When a user is stuck in world with no Lindens, they can’t search, their landmarks are gone, and they can’t TP, please tell me what constructive thing that person is supposed to say? That at least they can log in? Really, I think it’s very, very shortsighted for your staff to be complaining about negative posts from the users when things are as messed up as they are.
I have something constructive to say though, that I have said here before. LL, you need to take a long, hard look at how you do things. The fact that you are rolling code to your live system that so thoroughly breaks the user experience should be a very clear signal to you that something needs to change. How you’re even pushing out new code with so many changes when you have had repeated database problems is not something I quite understand. I would think the first priority should be to stabilize the system, above all else.
I work for a startup company that has gone through similar pains. We have taken steps to improve our QA and our processes, and it has helped. There’s not an overnight fix — it’s hard. But you are clearly in a place now where a lot of people are relying on your systems not just for entertainment, but also for their livelihood. You need to focus on making those systems much more stable, so that people are surprised when the system is down.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:43 PM
Things are rapidly getting worse. Can’t TP, can’t open a notecard, can rez objects, can’t search, can’t do much of anything anymore.
Cardhu McArdle Says:
“Got home, but discovered a male friend now has breasts. He informs me that I do too.”
If this is true and men now have their own squeezy toys it could ruin the escort economy in SL, FIX IT NOW!!!!!!!!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:44 PM
I figured out that workaround like ten seconds after I had the problem. Sheesh.
Logging in and out works, too.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:44 PM
I’ve had problems going from Columba and Cygnus to Provincetown East and West. I found Teleporting to Donders (mainland) allowed me to then get to the Ptown sims. I was able to go from Ptown East to Columba without going through the mainland so its either intermittent or the blockage is one way. Columba and Cygnus are next ot each other and part of the Azure Islands estate. Provincetown East and West are part of Anshe’s Dreamland Pride estate (my home is in Ptown East).
A friend had problems going from Columba to other sims but got help from Harry Linden this morning and did the same workardound I’d figured out about going to the mainland first when trying to get to another island/estate.
December 1st, 2006 at 7:45 PM
Teleporting is indeed a big problem right now, and very annoying, however this is not the only problem as I’m sure you know. But concidering comments are closed in the relevant threads what better place to post? Which btw, leads me to question sencorship: Will LL enforce a dictatorship policy every time things go a little sour?
I know you have a lot to deal with right now, and I’m sure you will eventually fix it, but please don’t cut off your arm by ignoring the voice of the public while doing so.
Ok, what I really wanted to ask is about ’search’. I notice now that don’t get hits on keywords in classifieds. Is this permanent or will that be fixed also. Furthermore, if so, will the period period for which we paid be extended? It’s kind of frustrating to find you paid 10kL$, only to realize I could just as well have thrown it out the window.
Apart from that, you all do a great job. Keep at it! Thank you
December 1st, 2006 at 7:45 PM
If we’re going to complain, we all must start really using the beta grid. There is no way LL can get a reasonably heavy load on the beta unless lots (and lots and lots) of us stress test it. What else should they do, hire 16000 people to do testing? The nature of this system makes automated testing inadequate both because it can’t match the complexity AND because it can’t match the load of real users!
December 1st, 2006 at 7:51 PM
Stay tuned for next weeks update to 1.14.0 on the regularly schedule day. Hope nobody minds that we down the rest of the grid for awhile. Sorry, try again tomorrow.
Back on topic…. teleporting issues? $linden$ missing? I can’t even access the grid! (Yes, support has been contacted… blah blah)

Maybe we can all login about 100 libSL bots apiece and at least try and simulate some load there.
December 1st, 2006 at 8:12 PM
I, too, am experiencing the issues on one of my characters with the avatar not showing (including prim parts), the L$ balance showing as blank, and am unable to teleport with either of my characters. All I have to say, though, is to bear with it. Everyone at Linden Labs who can is working on this issue to get things resolved. For those of you saying that things need to be tested more… Get your arses over the the beta grid and help with the testing. And for Goddess’ sake… USE YOUR BRAINS. Not everything can be discovered on a beta grid because NO COMPANY has the resources at present to have a beta grid that matches its production grid in size or load.
Now… To Torley and all you other Lindens out there… Thank you so very much for continuing your diligent work through these trying times. Believe It or Not, you do have supporters on the Grid.
Thank you. =^o.o^=

why do i want a “is typing” like msn messenger has?
this upgrade was ridiculous
and allow ppl with no credit card?? (i know itz not about this last update or anything like it)
u r going nuts, sl is becoming all f*cked up
December 1st, 2006 at 8:28 PM
I haven’t been able to reproduce, but since it’s related to tp’ing. Three times (once yesterday, twice today) it happened that after a tp, I’ll physically be in the other sim (others can see me), but what’s visible on my screen is still the old sim. This lasts for about half a minute before either a disconnect happens, or the scene suddenly changes to the new sim.
December 1st, 2006 at 8:31 PM
Ok this one it not totally negative. Ok the potential of the upgrades are nice. I also know people scream for upgrades and new features. But shouldn’t you take the slow and steady addon approach when ever possible? Incidents happen, but I’m pretty sure so many things are wrong because TOO much was implemented and did too much all at once. I worked in I.T. and had a boss that had a problem with scope creep and end up upgrading too much for the department to support at once if there was a problem. As we all know there IS always a problem with upgrades especially when you bite off more than you can possibly fix IF it goes wrong.

December 1st, 2006 at 8:45 PM
to those who say to log in and stress test the beta grid:
what do you recommend when I tried numerous times and got a (paraphrasing here) “grid is full” error? so much for testing.
December 1st, 2006 at 8:46 PM
Why not offer to pay residents who consistently spend time on the Beta Grid?
There are nearly 2 million potential testers who could be easily employed to do testing.
A few hundred Lindens for a weeks testing including a mandatory survey….
December 1st, 2006 at 8:50 PM
For the past week I’ve been patient and observing. I hardly have TP issues which is good and for the most part relogging helps me alot.
But I see that a lot of people are very upset. Alot of these people are right LL.
You’re playing with peoples livlihood. Do you really think you want to be responsible for not only losing a customer but putting someone one of the streets or something awful because bills can’t be paid?
I don’t know about you, but I can’t put that on my conscience. Slow down and be more patient before upgrading things.
Thanks LL i’m up to a few thousands dollars in debt. I had faith that I could be able to support myself on SL. But with all the problems with the game it seems that I can’t. It’s actually pretty scary when all of sudden you have no money.
How many people are you willing to ruin just because you’re too cheap to hire more people, or too greedy to listen to your customers cries for help?
Btw the way Tp’s are working a’okay for me. I haven’t had to use the work around yet but it’s helpful to know it. Thanks a bunch!
Trying to be cheerful and patient,
LB

Well said AMD64 user, “TOO much was implemented and did too much all at once”, there is something sorely wrong with this SL version 12.13. Missing inventory items, incorrect L$ balances, and teleporting issues. Database issues, dah, go figure! Whatever happened to a rollback option, a backup plan. Waiting for the fixes to come again only to what for SL 12.14 that will fix the problems in SL 12.13. Keep up the good work Linden Lab. I understand what you all are up against. If blending the theory of conceptual analysis to run time environments under maximum load were possible, how wonderful upgrades would be.

I see the problem immediately. You said nothing in all of this of the animals virginity.
Next time, sacrifice virgins. Never fails.
@Lindsey Barret this upgrade blows. But honestly, 1.11 was blow central, and if you weren’t around for 1.7, you don’t know the meaning of the word blow.
Anyhow, this too will pass.

I have a small suggestion that would take the load off a lot of the system.
Object in world can be held in a simulator database. That would take load off the database server, and put it on the region server.
Creating prims and making changes and copies should all be handled server side. This allows several things.
It reduces bandwidth usage, because all that’s passing from the client to server are individual directions as to what changes should be made to the prims being effected.
The server can check to see if a prim which is ordered to be copied is in fact copiable. One can argue that CopyBot can still be used to measure said prims and send individual instructions to the grid to make them {which is true} but still … it’s still a hurdle in CopyBot’s path.
I think it’s an excellent idea. Right now, if it saved even 1% on their bandwidth … well …
There is a modification that they made on the new Titanic. It saves them 5% of their fuel. Wow.
Except a ship the size of Titanic goes through a *lot* of fuel. So even 1% savings are significant.
Likewise, SL goes through a *lot* of bandwidth. So savings of even 1% will be a significant savings for them.

Please roll back the update for now. I think you are going to lose alot of people, as people are feed up and have already started closing down their places.
Just a few hours earlier i was without body and money again… i had to reconnect 4-5 times before anything started working, which is a pain considering that i have to wait 5mins before i get to login.

One tiny nit to add - WHAT IS WITH EVERYONE’S PANTS? They’re all pegged at the ankles.
OK I know it’s really insignificant but don’t we already look dork enough??? LOL ;)y

Thanx SO much for the helpful info provided here — it’ll help us fix this bug. As you know from my most recent post, we’ve got serious work to contend with into the weekend. I’m going to be on call all weekend, 24/7, communicating what I learn from our Devs and Ops behind-the-scenes, and be checking in regularly with our Community personnel and Liaisons inworld, posting future updates as necessary.
So if anyone asks where I am, answer is: I’m here, or will be, very shortly.
I’m closing comments on this because we’ve got a good sampling…
including those who thought they were censored but aren’t. Remember, check out our Blog Guidelines, it’ll save you a lot of confusion.
I will add, much of my personal appreciation goes to those of you who’re helping each other and answering questions that came up before. I’ve seen a lot of things in the last few days we should get solidified in the Knowledge Base so you’ve got quick-access to the answers in the future. Remember, we also have a Support Page.

Quite informative article. I do work in this industry myself and have some experience in this topic, but I do not agree with you in 100%. However, you made some good points too
