I recognize the huge potential of this endeavor. I wish that more outsiders could. Good press, and lots of it might help. Nasty rumors abound, and need some balancing. How can we do that?

Interesting post. I came across this blog by accident, but it was a good accident. I have now bookmarked your blog for future use. Best wishes. Salma Hayek.

Just a few thoughts (hope I don't wander off topic..)

From the day I saw that Dutch documentary about Second Life (end of 2005) untill now I love to play this "game". I am not much of a techie, don't like building and/or scripting but I was amazed by the social aspects of this "game". It has thought me a lot about human nature and has given me an insight in some of the darkest fantasies we indulge ourselves if we submerge ourselves into anonimity.

The last past years I have seen many difficulties (Bugs & C°) making our Second Life harder then it should be. Nevertheless even with lag and related problems I am still very happy to see or hear from my friends when I have the chance to get online.

Allthough I have invested in this game, I never have expected much revenue. The economical system of Second Life doesn't really allow that for the moment. I am sure however that in a not so far away future many things will be improved. And that hard work and dedication will be rewarded. (for those who want to earn big money, don't expect that you can build a cardboard SL club in 5 minutes and earn hundreds of dollars, better get a RL job then :)
Don't forget it is not only content creating that is important.... Hosting events, maintaining good working groups, keeping friends together is as important.

Perhaps after the economical and technical débacle it would be a good idea to have a political system into Second Life? Wouldn't it be great to see how Residents form parties that can have certain influence on their world? Just a thought... Now our beloved "game" is run by a "soft" dictator and it is to my opinion the best way for the moment (perhaps I can be Philip's Evita?), but in a near future I think we should unite and be part of the decision-making. Second Life Senators? We should consider however a fair voting system with all these alts and free accounts that are flooding our world (notice the irony, please :)

One more thing... It's noble from Philip to make SL accessible all over the world, but money will allways play a role in whatever you do! If you want to access the highway you must buy a car, it's as simple as that. Perhaps make a "light" version of the game? For tourists only?

SL has given me the idea that a lot of good people exist out there and I am sure that the friends I made in here will continue to be valuable for me. And my English improved a lot by playing (tho I still have this Yoda-speech).

And perhaps we will not find solutions for world problems, but at least we trie :)

Love is all!

Second Life is a fundamentally bleak world. The promise to Be anyone, or Do anything, is belied in the end by the experience of Second Life itself, a world created by corporate values, a place populated by casinos and sex clubs, by private development, and a kind of bizarre, paranoid language; a testing ground for Nike. It is also an intensely lonely place - remarkable in a way, because instead of being a utopia, or a true virtual world, Second Life is instead an expression of a kind of tyranny. It is a success as a phenomenon, but I predict that, Mission Statements nothwithstanding, its desire not to be restrictive will be governed by its efficiency as a trading location, and like the first banks, Second Life may find itself de-populated in the end.
