Sunday network issues update

Monday, November 6th, 2006 at 3:00 PM by: claudialinden

We have been dealing with two separate network problems. The first has been resolved. On Sunday afternoon and evening (PST), there was an overload condition in one of the routers. This has been fixed. Second, we are sometimes seeing unreliable internet connectivity which is triggering similar problems. We are currently looking into it.

Would any of this have any bearing on why I keep crashing at regular intervals in the last couple of days?

that is all cool glad ur fixing it reseting my sim constantly is killing my business for the last 24 hours i hope that the reseting of sims will be less just when i start getting my store back running again its all reset and i loose all those customers again and again…

i am glad this issue is getting resolved

  5. 5 Rascal Ratelle Says:

I forgot at add frequent Client crashes is the result of the above mentioned packet loss and lagging and band width problems.
Crash reports does not always activate on crash.

  6. 6 wandarich Says:

ive been telling mia linden which sims are crashing and in what order. Ive been watching them all night, there is a definate pattern to them crashing and restarting.

dont believe me? if you are quick come to shimmer next then berthould pass

  7. 7 wandarich Says:

it now appears to be stuck in a loop at Klaw. Its crashed 3 times in a row now

  8. 8 Ricky Lucero Says:

Wow, no kidding? I don’t even work for LL, and I can tell you the conditions when the network is experiencing severe packet loss, and is not performing up to par.

If you guys aren’t smart enough to already know what the problem is, then you should probably find someone who can. Like maybe, ANYBODY ELSE!

  9. 9 Dark Poppy Says:

In the last two days Solchan, the sim I live on has crashed more then since we bought the land there. Everything I have made in the last two days is gone and things I have deleted are back.

I for one would like to see the Lindens fix the problems they have now instead of giving us any more updates. It seems that everytime we have an update there are more issues for them to resolve which means rolling restarts and crashing sim.

I understand that things happen on the outside and that the Lindens are doing the best they can but they need to slow down on giving us new things until they old ones are working correctly.

Have you ever wanted to show someone something really cool but when you show it to them, it isn’t working right and they say “ummm, yeah that’s really cool, … I guess”?

That just happen to me cuz of the HUGE packet loss issue. Thanks for making me look like a dork. LOL.

Anyway, is it being too simplistic to suggest rebooting the routers? Probably. How many L$ is it for fiber optic trunk lines.

  11. 11 lucy bowie Says:

I’m having problems similar to what Rascal Ratalle has experienced.

  12. 12 claudialinden Says:

Hi, Rascal, Wandarich, et al for pointing out in-world issues you’ve experienced. In the future, with performance issues, make sure to visit the known issues page. Things that aren’t known issues, file bug reports to help us find and destroy. Make sure you have crash logger enabled on preferences and it will send us anonymized information on your system which helps a great deal.

  13. 13 Megan Torricelli Says:

My bandwidth is extremely low… the packet loss is extremely high.. besides personal crashes due to those issues..
I’ve also been experiencing crashes.. and not just the regular crash.. then..oh were back up.. yesterday Nooribeom crashed.. and re-crashed every five-ten mins for the next 3 hours.. I too run a business.. in a competitive market.. and the damage this is doing to my traffic.. is outrageous.. some of us have to put alot of hard work into achieving a good traffic rating.. to make our businesses succeed.. i think we should be compensated.. at least in the form.. of not calculating the absence do to the issues into the equation.. We’re patient.. but the loss of time, presence and money.. should’nt be overlooked in my opinion.

  14. 14 Rascal Ratelle Says:

1 Crash logger is enabled, It still doesn’t lag crashes half the time. Two I use bug reports but many off the issues known to residences don’t end up listed in known issues pages, Many of the known issues I have listed are NOT listed in the known issues blog, that is why I am repeatedly listing them here.

  15. 15 jill kearny Says:

oh no thanks to me for reporting my troubles which you just deleted because you don’t want to talk about it? :p

  16. 16 Rascal Ratelle Says:

plus, the bug reports does NOT cover ALL the issues I have listed.

  17. 17 Aindreas McGee Says:

Actually, over the summer, for about 2 months bandwidth really sucked, especially when it was overthrottled. Mainly after the password incident was when things got slow in my memory. The game I designed that was ultra-smooth was unplayable by me most of the time. Getting bandwidth over 100kbps was a dream during that period, as I waited 4 minutes for a big club to load.

But for the past 2-3 weeks things have been pretty good. I’ve had the bandwidth achieve a decent 400 when teleporting and sometimes peak higher. It’s been good. Yea, the days of 0 packet loss haven’t returned yet, balls fall through tables still a little more than they used to, but I’ve been fairly happy with performance.

That and with no grey goo attacks or major outages or hacker theft, I think LL is digging themselves out of a hole fairly well. Still some distance to go to get back to where we were.

  18. 18 Ishtara Rothschild Says:

Thanks :) I always wondered about the increased lag on sundays. Glad to hear that it’s fixed.

  19. 19 Rascal Ratelle Says:

The lag is not fixed and it’s not just on Sundays, it’s every day. and it’s getting worse.

  20. 20 Rah Rah Says:

Now why does this not surprize me! OVERLOAD? Tesk Tesk……….Some One need more bandwidth!……..

  21. 21 Rah Rah Says:

Problem is LLabs don`t read all reports only oneses they can deal with…Some times thinking about those reports people send in. Some are just outright wrongly chosen to be debugged. If we used a little smarts while figuringout the problems, maybe well have a better client. Not all bugs are bugs, just the lack of brains to figure out problems before sending in bug reports.

  22. 22 Maczter Oddfellow Says:

Any progress on the investigation into using Akamai or a competing service to help globally (and redundantly) disperse the burden of serving all the textures, etc. instead of serving everything all from one central location?

  23. 23 Khamon Says:

Thank You for these updates Brent. We’re far more comfortable, even with recurring issues, when we feel informed.

  24. 24 Sue Baskerville Says:

It would be a lot easier to do a good job of checking the known issues if the bulk of the bug reports weren’t hidden until you click on a button. The way it is keeps you from using your browser’s text search function to perform an efficient search.

  25. 25 IntLibber Brautigan Says:

I’ve had the following problems both this weekend, and continuing:
    a) sun suddenly shifts from noon to midnight
    b) transitioning from sim to sim locks avs up and either transports them across the sim, or drags them slowly across it to the other side, often sinking slowly below the level of terrain.
    c) crashing out, and when I return, as much as a half hour to an hours work building is gone like it never happened.
    d) today, my command line interface is giving me a warning that a different exception handler is being used by the client than what is expected.
    e) right now, I tried uploading a texture, but it got lost somewhere and has not indicated a successful upload yet, two minutes later, and now the command line interface shows that my client appears to have been hacked, it is trying to send AgentUpdate packets to IP address 72.5.12.110, which it says is an “unknown circuit”. I have a complete and fully updated McAfee security system on this PC.
    f) we’ve had an ongoing issue in this sim for the past week of sockpuppets coming in and harassing residents and visitors.

This all seems a pattern to me, and I ask that the lindens contact look into this.

  26. 26 JohnY Says:

Only joined a couple of days ago… fantastic idea, looks great, but most of the time I can’t go more than 2-3mins without the app closing itself :(
I read something about a crash reporting system, i’ve not seen this once, the program just terminates!

I hope these issues are sorted out soon, no way i’ll be spending any cash on this until then, I don’t want to give up on the site completely as it has so much potential but getting more than a bit frustrated.

  27. 27 IntLibber Brautigan Says:

JohnY: If your graphics card is not up to snuff, your pc will crash. If you are running other background apps, like YIM, etc, your PC will crash. You should also reduce your draw distance in your SL client graphics preferences to 64 meters. Also, if your internet connection is not a broadband connection with very good network quality, you will suffer from packet loss.

That being said, I’ve seen a number of crashes in the past few days which, while better than outright griefer attacks, is not helpful.

  28. 28 Scotty Femto Says:

Out of Curiosity, those of you who are crashing, what is your PC set up.
Since the last update I can be on like 20 min. then crash. then 10 later I will crash again. and again till its like every few seconds. This started with the last patch.

    My PC

    Athlon 2400 XP
ATI Radion X1600 Pro 512 megs
    1 GIG DDR 400
    Sound blaster Audigy 2 ZS
    Cable Modem at 5-7 Mbps
    *All updated Drivers*

more than enough power for SL. yet since its last patch… CRASH!

  29. 29 Cesare Giacobini Says:

I for one would have to say that I’m on it most of the day from 8ish - 5 pm EST and experience lagging but no crashes or any other problem.

keep up the good work Linden.

And really eveyone, give the Lindens a break, if you were in their position maybe you could fix it, but you aren’t. Love what you got!

  30. 30 A Resident Says:

Some regions still seem to be having serious performance problems. In Digeut, it takes several minutes to attach or wear items from my inventory. Walking 10m to the region next door, wearing the same items only takes a second or two to complete.

I know LL is working on these issues but some kind of update would be nice. We’ve been (s)living with these problems for days.. :(
