Missing purchased items returning
Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 at 5:57 PM by: phoenixlindenThe bug causing the occasional missing inventory on re-log has been located and corrected. All new purchases will work as expected. All inventory purchased since 2006-10-11 and before 2006-10-17 18:00 SLT is being returned to the Lost & Found folder in your inventory.
For those interested in the gory details, the back-end systems in Second Life have picked up permissions and security settings which block invalid viewer requests to modify inventory. The simulators have been sending incorrectly parented inventory items to the inventory database since the feature existed. Before 2006-10-11, the viewer would immediately detect and correct the inventory item but now that request was being blocked.
The inventory database now corrects bad parenting information and other checks are in place to make sure this never happens again.
All inventory in this state is still available and I have kicked off a process which will return these lost items to your Lost & Found folder. This process can take a long time — possibly a week. I will be investigating ways to optimize the process to try to finish it sooner.

That’s great news that the item loss is only temporary. Thanks for the update at last.
October 17th, 2006 at 6:21 PM
Well, it’s good to know things are being fixed
Continue like that, and SL will be a much nicer place where to be.
By the way, how is the asset server doing? I think things have improved somewhat, but waiting for areas to load still takes a long time. As things are right now, flying anywhere is impossible, things load way too slow to move at high speed.

I’m wondering if those who said the stipend announcement was a diversion from this issue will post in this blog entry?
October 17th, 2006 at 6:30 PM
Awesome to see LL is on the ball with this. The distraction conspiracy theorists can put away their tinfoil hats now
October 17th, 2006 at 6:48 PM
Good to know real issues are constantly worked on, by those who can. Conspiracy nuts, recall that not all Lindens know the system in and out, through and through, or even have an idea of how it all works. I imagine a fair number of Linden employees are support staff, project developers and business-types. Not masters of the code, who can analyse permissions bugs all day, every day.
October 17th, 2006 at 6:48 PM
Thank you for explaining the situation, Phoenix! This is very good news
October 17th, 2006 at 7:13 PM
I’m a little confused by the technobabble…
Is this fixing the problem *I* had.. of OLD items.. AO’s, collars, textures, etc. vanishing randomly from inventory? or does this JUST address the “purchased items vanish on relog”?
October 17th, 2006 at 7:38 PM
I am sure that it good news for many people. I hope you will be repeating the announcement for those who dont’ get online real often, or who might just forget to check their their lost and found. Several MOTDs at intevals throughout the process might be good.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:40 PM
Thank you for the hard work on this aspect of the asset problems. I sincerely hope it fixes ALL the asset issues, and not the subset that only affected certain kinds of vendor purchases. From the sounds of the ‘gory details’, I would think it likely that the error in question *could* have caused all of the different types of missing items. Well done to the Linden bug hunters on this one!
October 17th, 2006 at 7:45 PM
Good news indeed.
Hey, if there are any unclaimed items feel free to send them to MY lost and found.
j/k
Thanks for working on this.
October 17th, 2006 at 8:13 PM
Great news! Glad to hear it. (Even though I didn’t loose anything, I love to hear that others will get their stuff back.)
October 17th, 2006 at 8:15 PM
Hopefully, you don’t see this twice.
Great news! Even tho I didn’t loose any items (that I know of), it’s good to hear that others will be getting their stuff back. Good work, LL.

October 17th, 2006 at 10:41 PM
Uhm o.o I reported as I was told to via Live Help… Did a report bug on about 3k worth of new items that are still missing…?
October 17th, 2006 at 10:56 PM
Great news, and good work
I just stumbled over a note in the Linden Answers thread; guess I should really check the blog more often. It’s still unfamiliar yet.
October 17th, 2006 at 11:06 PM
I have this house, contents & land up for sale, and there is not much to show at the moment! Is there financial compensation while I’m waiting? It will obviously affect my potential sale.
October 18th, 2006 at 12:22 AM
I too would like to thank LL for their hard work in fixing this matter. Trust that your hard work in the past few months has not gone unnoticed by atleast this resdent.
On another note Phoenix, can you make certain that this mention gets around in-world, perhaps on the MOTD for several days and other venues, so that the less than ethical can be made aware that the problem has been corrected and their fun is over. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
October 18th, 2006 at 12:48 AM
I don’t recall losing any items from my inventory, but it’s good to know that the disappearance was only temporary.
October 18th, 2006 at 12:57 AM
Hi Phoenix!
Great to see the issue has been resolved! The technical details are much appreciated, it makes things so much easier to understand for the technical inclined, and at the same time it shows yet again how complicated a world like Second Life is, and how much work has been put into it.
October 18th, 2006 at 3:21 AM
This is a diversion from the stipend issue!
Seriously Phoenix: Good news. Thanks for your hard work. I finally get my incredible vanishing hulahoop back.
October 18th, 2006 at 4:22 AM
Well played LL
Now i cant return to my shopping spree’s
October 18th, 2006 at 4:37 AM
This is good since I’ve received IM’s from some customers who’re wondering where their purchases went. NOW- when is the “Make Outfit” button going to be re-instated???
October 18th, 2006 at 6:39 AM
Danke schoen!
October 18th, 2006 at 8:07 AM
For some “reason” my account has been disabled and on the of the Second Life website “Your Account” and it is in term of “on hold” is this some kind of a bug. Because this is really aching me, and I won’t to go on Second Life, get 400L$ and play and purchase from my hard long-”not yet selled”-”building and script”-work that has taken me, hours, days, etc from scratch. I hope someone hasn’t bugged my account. If Linden Lab has disabled/banned it and say I have to pay 9.95$ USD on my account. WHY? Although this isn’t the subject of missing purchased items returning. This is my only connection with Linden Lab. HELP!
October 18th, 2006 at 8:20 AM
Yay, it’s great to know we haven’t lost anything and thanks for fixing that so assiduously
My only caveat is that we weren’t informed until *long* after the problem had started to manifest, and a friend of mine ended up purchasing TWO avatars because the first one went missing and she didn’t know what was happening. She’ll get it back, but she can’t use two of the same non-trans item! So that’s wasted money.
Please, please, once you’re sure that random bug reports are actually translating to a grid-wide serious problem, let us all know - not just in a blog post (which actually didn’t turn up until everyone knew by word of mouth anyway) but by an in-world message or login tip. Then we can all take steps to minimise damage and just wait for things to return to normal. Reasonable people won’t mind how long it takes to fix a problem, as long as we understand the problem and can work around it
October 18th, 2006 at 8:28 AM
“Tsukasa Keiko Says:
Awesome to see LL is on the ball with this. The distraction conspiracy theorists can put away their tinfoil hats now
”
There would be less tinfoil hats manufactured were direct questions answered early on. It’s called “reassurance”. For example:
“We are aware of the problem. It is being worked on. When it is fixed all ove your items will be returned. We do no yet have a date for the fix.”
does a lot to smash tinfoil hats. You make tinfoil hats by ignoring for days repeated requests from people very naturally concerned about their abililty to keep stuff they have and have returned what has been lost.
I’m pleased to learn the problem has been fixed and my lost stuff will be returned.
October 18th, 2006 at 8:34 AM
I don’t think this has anything to do with the older problem where items vanish from inventory… this started after a recent update, it may be due to the gray goo fence, or to the client changes to address the recent permissions exploit.
October 18th, 2006 at 8:37 AM
Its great that the people are going to regain their items, I know several people who are going to be very happy people to be getting them back…however I lost over 3k worth of stuff about 6 weeks back from my inventory when we had a 2 minute warning that SL was going to shut down, are we going to regain these items also?
October 18th, 2006 at 8:40 AM
Nad Gough - For example: “We are aware of the problem. It is being worked on. When it is fixed all ove your items will be returned. We do no yet have a date for the fix.”
That’s dangerous territory: If they had promised to return items and it proved to be impossiblele all the smaxhed tinfoil hats in the world couldn’t help.
“We are aware of the problem. It is being worked on.” is all a programmer can say.
October 18th, 2006 at 8:43 AM
It is good to know the issue has been fixed.
However, myself, my partner, and a lot of my friends were giving out FREE nocopy/transfer items during the time of this bug, because LL wouldn’t say if these items were LOST or MISPLACED. So now, a lot of people have copies of things they didn’t pay for. That’s a big loss to content creators.
I’ve lost a couple thousand worth, and I doubt the people that bought them will go running off and sell the copies, so to me, I can live with it. But a friend who uses vendors has been giving out thousands and THOUSANDS worth of nocopy/transfer items… these people all have 2 now…
October 18th, 2006 at 9:34 AM
Will this include inventory items purchased and delivered on slexchange?????
October 18th, 2006 at 10:23 AM
My items have not been returned.
October 18th, 2006 at 10:52 AM
[...] Full story here. From the Official Linden Blog: A bug has been noted where purchased items sometimes disappear from inventory on the next log-in. It looks like this happens if the object has not been rezzed before logging out. We’ve been investigating the problem, but the repro is inconsistent, so it would appear that only some scripted vendor objects are affected. If you have had this problem, please file a bug report and include the vendor box UUID and location so we can test it. [...]
October 18th, 2006 at 12:57 PM
same here, missing items have NOT been returned
October 18th, 2006 at 1:32 PM
For those worried that items have not returned yet, please be patient. As noted in the original post, the process to find all of them may take a week. All bug reports I got with an SL name attached have been processed, and tens of thousands of other residents have been processed, but note that we recently broke 1,000,000 registered users and sifting through thousands of inventory items for millions of residents takes a while.
On a positive note, I have in fact optimized the finding process to the point that it can process an order of magnitude more accounts in the same amount of time. Once the current influx slows a bit, I will kick off the new process.
October 18th, 2006 at 2:07 PM
I have lost a skybox, a couple of Ks worth of furniture, pose balls and more, I have been patient for weeks and really hope to get them back. BTW- It would be much easier to keep track of my stuff if I can create folders, file items in side those folders, and have them maintain the organization I give them each time I check my inventory to use something, but every time I log in everything is jumbled again and folders I create are haphazardly filed!
October 18th, 2006 at 5:50 PM
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! All my purchases have been returned. Thank you.
October 18th, 2006 at 7:00 PM
Some of the objects that vanished out of my inventory in the past week were purchased last year. Is there any explanation for that..?
October 18th, 2006 at 9:25 PM
To everyone saying “My missing items haven’t been returned yet,” READ THE POST AGAIN. They said it could take UP TO A WEEK for everyone’s misplaced items to return to their inventories. Give it time, they’re working on speeding the process up a bit. In the meantime, be patient.
Though I wasn’t personally affected by this bug, I’m still glad that at least nothing was permanently lost, just temporarily misplaced. Keep up the good work! =)
Take care!

Nad Gough - For example: “We are aware of the problem. It is being worked on. When it is fixed all ove your items will be returned. We do no yet have a date for the fix.”
IF THIS WAS SO THEN WHY DIDN’T I GET MY 3 ITEMS BACK ????????????????????????????
October 19th, 2006 at 6:09 AM
I guess many SLers have experienced inventory problems … I made the mistake of having a group officer remove all objects from my rented parcel before taking back all of mine (there were about 100 prims that *weren’t* mine also on the parcel that pushed the rental allowance over the limit!). Now I wait like everyone else, in hope, for their return. However, I’ve also had stuff just disappear both when rezzed and from the inventory … losing a skin is a real pain
I have also had a NoCopy NoTrans item returned even though I had it in my inventory!
Would it help, and is it possible, to have a local copy of the inventory stored on one’s PC and updated at each log off?
Slightly off topic … after my first week I found the Library irrelevant as I have built up my own inventory - all nicely categorised in a subdirectory structure (which persists and does not return to chaos as a previous post suggested - OMG *that* would be a hassle). If spawning copies of the library to every 1M+ inventory is an overhead then why not make it optional. I guess many old-timers, like me (ha!!! 1 month old), rarely need it.
Keep up the good work guys … guess SL leads to sleep deprivation whether a user or admin
October 19th, 2006 at 1:01 PM
Pathfinder - you said that all the bug reports items have been returned? I had bug report rt.lindenlab.com #434703 - but my items have not return to the lost and found yet. Not to rush, was just wondering if you showed that bug report as completed?
October 19th, 2006 at 4:34 PM
i have had 2 sofa sets and a rug gone missin from my inventory still not been returned the stuff missin is not the only stuff i have a few other things missin too and i would like to know when and if it will all be returned
October 20th, 2006 at 2:18 PM

October 20th, 2006 at 3:57 PM
For all those merchants who kindly replaced missing no-copy/tranfer items… isn’t this gonna screw ‘em?
October 22nd, 2006 at 7:08 AM
Fixed? I found when I log on tons of empty folders and items dissapeared from my inventory
October 22nd, 2006 at 8:12 AM
Just another voice crying out in the dark vastness……I lost items that I bought through SLExchange, and have yet to see them appear in my lost and found folder. It could take as long as a week? We’re rapidly closing in on that and honestly, I’m rather skeptical that it’ll happen. A few months back I lost over $10K worth of items, some custom made, when my items were being returned to me during a laggy time…….I NEVER got those items back, even after filing a bug report. I might as well flush my money down the toilet, yes I got a few moments pleasure from these items, but that’s not really the point is it? Linden Labs has got to get their act together. I don’t know about you, but I refuse to flush my hard earned money down the toilet irl….why should I continue to do it here?
October 24th, 2006 at 5:14 AM
tick tock tick tock……….it’s been exactly one week since the original post by phoenix linden, and still no items returned to my lost and found folder….hmmmm…maybe it’s another lost and found folder? O.o…………..in someone else’s acct……….yeah! that’s it!
October 25th, 2006 at 4:01 PM
I think that bug your referring to is either back, or making an appearance.. I bought shoes, three pairs, and one pair disappeared..
October 30th, 2006 at 5:10 AM
I suspect that the bug is in the indevidual accounts. I futher suspect that the Lindens can fix this problem if account by account. But only do so if they feel that you intend to go public with your complaints. When I publically complained with the comlaint in my ALT’s name, I got the missing items returned to me within the hour. But only for my ALT. Not on this account. Filling out bug reports and talking to live help seem to do nothing. As an in-world merchent I can not be producing and selling things if I am going to have to constantly be replacing people’s merchendice.
I would say that this bug is a “Show Stopper”. Second Life is dependent on user creations. If people can not be sure that purchased items are going to be safe in their inventory, they will stop buying things. If item creators can not be sure that the items they spend time and effort to make (for fun or profit), they will stop creating. Second Life will eventually become blank and barren. Nobody will have any interest in buying lindens. Since nothing can be purchased with them. This wonderful place called Second Life could disappear out of all our lives!
This has happened to me several times a day as of late. I personally plan to stop creating content for sale in Second Life or purchasing things in Second Life. I will not start again until I have actual reason to believe that Linden Labs fixing the problem, rather than trying to downplay it and cover it up.
When I publically complained with the comlaint in my ALT’s name, I got the missing items returned to me within the hour. Filling out bug reports and talking to live help seem to do nothing.
