Presence Update: Once More, With Feeling…
Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 at 8:16 AM by: Zero LindenWe’ll be trying to update the presence server again today. We figured out what went wrong with yesterday’s attempt, and are ready to try again.
[12:15] Well, that was a bit longer than 10 minutes. But, it worked! WOOT! This has reduced load on the database by a significant margin and will give us more head-room as we grow. Now go sign-up your friends…
[11:44] About to do this now - turning off log-in for 5 to 10 minutes.
We expect to attempt this between 9am and 10am this morning (SLT). Of course, we’ll shout in-world before and after we do.
During the update, there will be about a 15min. period of no log ins, and people in-world will see some broken presence (Find people, on-line status, friends list). If it all goes smoothly, there will be no need to re-log once the update is complete.

Good luck!
And it’s nice to hear that you’ve not given up on this one. But more importantly, I REALLY appreciate your announcing the login suspension in advance. (Especially since that’s right around the time I’ll be getting home from work.)
Keep up this level of communication and I’ll have to retract all my criticisms!

Thank you for the status message- I appreciate the communication.
I also appreciate LL being able to stay on track despite the recent grid attacks and necessary responses to that. I’m almost feeling like I can get back in world and do a little bit of building

The Status page says SL is offline, you may want to update that to indicate it’s actually up and running. Due to all the down time lately, I typically check the status page before even bothering to log in. I just happened to give logging in a try and got in, despite the offline status.

SL is online but the reason for that is that the server has been bugged somehow you can be logged off or relog in within 1 minute on time to see the SL with the lindens.
I don’t know what the time is at the moment can you put an SL time clock at the top of the page near the logo so I can match UK time USA and SL time.

Always and always when it is prime time elsewhere (being outside the US)!

Thanks for the notices and really you are doing a good job. It’s just so easy to complain. Just want to say you’ll never please us but we are glad you try.

I find that sl has been off line far to much i fear any new updates . Do you even test them or any thing befor useing the updates .Some times i think its caz yall really like to work hard an like haveing jobs to come in to each day.Well working hard is not always a good thing. My father always said work smart not hard. But it gets bad when you fix one small prob an make 50 new ones then its rolling updates an then a new version that makes 20 more new prob an that 70 get patched to just open up 170 new probs to fix. So guys have a good one its ok yall are doing fine
i guess keep up the good work but try to work smart an not hard.
this has been the ramlings of a mad black woman. peace out.

Kristy — Why are you complaining, they are trying to FIX problems with this update! Stop bashing them, they are doing their best!
September 20th, 2006 at 12:14 PM
I just downgraded my account recently due to all the issues SL has. I’m not being paid to be your beta tester.
September 20th, 2006 at 12:14 PM
It is around 8pm in the evening for UK. Later for the rest of europe. Peak times there I would imagine.
How is this 5 - 10 mins holding out for logins?
Any idea when we can get back in?

I’m tired of almost every other day downtime. i’m sick of it and someone needs to eather fix it or us the customer (”who is always right” i must remind you) will go somewhere else. Or start up something simualr to SL but yet better..

Thank you for anoncing the login in suspension. It is great that you guys take so much time in prefecting your systems so everyone can have a better time on sl. I hope these updates will do everything you said they will and omprove my time on sl. Its great also that you guys have made the grid more secure so that none of my personal info gets out. Keep up the good work you guys.

Well I’ve only been a secondlifer a few days so have suffered a lot of these recent problems. But.. it’s a really fantastic thing you’re doing here, an amazing experience, when it works, and I’m with you all the way..there’s always a little pain when you’re doing something innovative. You’ve got my support.

Re: Kristy Carroll
The best way to avoid problems in new updates is to test on the preview grid and report what you find! That’s what I try and do all the time, and everything I report has been fixed. That’s how I try and do my part to make sure SL is bug free. (Of course, I faily miseribly, but I’m one person, what do you expect.)

Glad to hear the presence issues are being addressed. While there’s a host of other bugs right now tied to 1.12.1 the ongong presence problem has had the most impact for me and many of my friends. I mostly socialize through IMs with friends so when the presence problems first showed up it made for quiet sessions of SL. Many days no matter how many relogs I tried my firend’s list was always offline. I talked to many friends and they wouldn’t stay around if their firends list didn’t show up right. I’m sure many others are the same way, come to SL to socialize with friends so why hang around (especially if you only have one machine and it can’t handle SL and other apps at the same time) if they’re not online. Of course often times they were. This fix to that problem sounds like it may also help alleviate some of the other issues going on. One problme fixed a hundred more to go.
Keep up the good work. May I also suggest a dev or three takes a serious look at the GUI part of the viewer, especially with settings storage/retrieval, as there’s been a lot of bugs lately that seem to be tied to the GUI and windows that seem unrelated to any of the listed new features, changes, or bug fixes in the patch notes. It’s looking like some of the code for it isn’t well modularized and is being inadvertantly affected by other sections of code.

Re: Will,
LL encourages competition to SL — why not be the first to start up a new metaverse? Learn first-hand the problems of running a service as complex as this
There is only so much testing that can be done internally, or on preview grids. The only way to really do “real world” testing is to, well, test it in the real world.
Some of the recent downtime has been due to morons releasing self-replicating objects on the grid, which tends to necessitate a shutdown of logins so that staff can clean it up. Admittedly, some of the downtime _HAS_ been due to bugs, or bad rollouts, but you have to give LL credit for making an effort to fix problems right away.
Everything LL does is for YOU, the customer, trying to make your experience better. Ride it out, and roll with the punches and everything’ll be OK. There isn’t anything you can do about it, so it’s pointless getting your blood pressure up over it.
Now, the whole “customer is always right” thing. Having worked in customer service before, the people who come in with that attitude tend to be belligerant, and abusive, the kind of people who think that yelling at their representative will get them better service. To this day, I don’t understand the psychology behind that. I go to restaurants, and see people abusing their waitress because something isn’t right with their food, or something hasn’t arrived fast enough. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, the “customer is always right” attitude just pisses people off. If you are pleasant, and polite, people will go out of their way to help you. If you act the goat, start demanding irrational things, and generally being a jerk, they’ll go out of their way to NOT help you, and to make things more difficult.
The moral of the story is:
1) don’t be invincibly ignorant
2) don’t be a jerk
3) educate yourself on why downtime happens, log into the preview, test stuff, and report bugs. It’ll make the main grid releases a lot more stable. Be a part of the solution, instead of whining about the problem/threatening to quit/threatening to start competition.
Anyhoo
Lindens: Thank you very much for keeping us all updated on stuff going on, it’s a lot nicer than having to dig through chains of rumors, and innuendo to see what was happening
