Second Life Grid issues resolved.
Monday, September 18th, 2006 at 1:32 AM by: micklindenThe Second Life Grid experienced a period of slowdown for approximately 1 hour from 12:15am, due to a self-replicating object attack. The object has been removed from the Grid and performance has returned to normal. Thanks for your patience whilst we addressed this issue.

While you and the rest of the Lindens are doing a bang-up job in dealing with these rather frequent attacks, I would hardly call the current state of the grid ‘normal performance’. It is taking twice as long (or more) for areas to rez as it did just a week ago, half the time the terrain textures still do not rez. Building is still a rather risky ordeal as well.
Definately far from the ideal ‘normal’ and I honestly hope things get better over the next couple of weeks :-/

Wow, nice job - a while back, grid attacks like this would bring the entire grid down, and usually required many hours to trace, clean up, & fix.

Did anyone NOT foresee this happening when you stopped requiring a credit card number to login?

Thanks for keeping us informed, Mick! Is it just my impression, or do the new group tools — specially the Estate Tools — allow you guys to simply remove a user’s object from the entire mainland at a click of the mouse? This is, as many know, the standard procedure on private islands and estates — just delete all items for a specific user, and the attack is quickly over.
No matter what your tools are (yes, I tried out the very amusing “Hacked God Mode” on Preview
) I’m glad you’re being given much more powerful tools to deal with these self-replicating object attacks. If all it takes is a Linden and a mouse click to return all objects from a user, well, I think that these kinds of self-replicating attacks will quickly fade into oblivion and will be just a chapter in SL’s history that will be closed, once and for all.

Figures that this would happen right when I was trying to login to do some maintenance. Anyway, thank you for your dilligence, hope no one was too upset about haiving to work overtime on a sunday night…

How was this attack possible after the changes to on-rez? Will there be further changes as a result of this attack?

Interesting things happen when you read the net articles

Are you sure there isn’t ANOTHER grid attack? teleporting doesn’t work, the map doesn’t work… Why is it that your system is so susceptible to being used as a mop by some idiotic kiddies that pretend to be 1337 hackers?

I believe as much as these replicators are a problem they also give us better knowledge of how sl works. I am certain the linden’s will fix the problem and learn alot from these experiences. secondlife is getting alot of attention and thats great. With good comes bad and we must be patient

Actually, for those of you that werent a part of the happiness sunday night, this one wasn’t really a rezzer, it was a spammer object, passing out some rather inappropriate material, especially to a female player :-/
A little hint for the rest of you, tho. Should you be getting items (probably spam in the form of porn) and have no friggin idea where it came from, open the mute list and manually enter the name, even if it is (object). It is also recommended that you turn off ‘other scripts’ on your property to help stop (well, slow down) those rapid rez objects that were the center of the last two attacks. If ‘other scripts’ are off, they can not spawn more on your property (but they can drift in from other areas) AND you can actually capture them in edit mode and do a mass return on them (I love fillin up the perps inventory with his own trash). Since they hop around so quickly, simply using parcel controls to return them isnt fast enough.
Even if you don’t wish to have ‘other scripts’ off at all times (in the case of clubs and the like where a constant crowd could be bummed out without their bling) at least be quick about turning them off when the blue box shows up stating there is an attack - this alone will help the lindens out alot by trimming down the number of places they have to seek and destroy.
