Second Life Grid Issues

Monday, September 18th, 2006 at 12:58 PM by: Robin Linden

The Second Life grid is experiencing a high load level, due to a self-replicating object attack. This has caused problems wth rezzing items, teleporting and slow log-ins. We’re currently investigating the issue and working on a resolution. We’ll provide further details as soon as possible.

Thanks whoever set this one off . Thanks for the info Robin.

  3. 3 High Faulkland Says:

It also resulted in getin launched into the air over 2000m, butt naked cause I was skinny dipping in my pool. Then loggin back in to a totally differnt area in front of a ton of people I don’t even know!! Talk about a dream of being naked at a party!! LOL Least it can’t happen like that in RL.

ty for this… i’ve been wondering if i need a new computer! and the lag, oh my… ty ty, please fix soon!

  5. 5 Stephanie Forester Says:

OMG ! Two attacks in a day… The grid is down… Damned… Twice i try to log, and twice down… I’m no lucky, or… I am the attack… I don’t know… :( I tried to log before work, and i wasn’t lucky… I tried to log now, after work, and i’m still not lucky… Yet another day into the wait of grid opening… After the down time for the upgrade, then the two patches…

Damned… I wish you could know who attacks SL, and just make those attacks stop… :(
Wish it will be opened back soon.. I’m starting feeling tired waiting for SL to open…

    Sad Stephie :(

  6. 6 Claire Winkoop Says:

Its a shame, that peps find it fun to do these attacks, Thanks to the linden’s for keeping on top of it :)

  7. 7 Wolfen Vanbrugh Says:

I hope it is resolved quick My poor Avatar looked like he had’nt eatin in years when I logged in. Don’t you guys feed them when we are away or what?….lol.

I’m assuming this problem is related, but I tried to reply to an offline IM and it bounced. Here is the error:

Thank god! It is open again :D
Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you !

  14. 14 Cookie Lewis Says:

Not being a scripter but wondering ..with this happening so much lately cant you block the self-replicating script to stop this. my guess is its the same mean person on a new alt..
    Thanks

  15. 15 MadamG Zagato Says:

What’s up with the Trojan attack? I started SL and received an error upon connecting to the grid that said an incoming Trojan attack was detected. Then I got the crash logger. After that my Antivirus blocked SL, so I reinstalled it…and the same thing.

I am running SPYBOT, and a virus scan at the moment, but I find this very strange and troubling. I hope this gets sorted out asap. :) Cheers!

  16. 16 Angela Glitter Says:

wonder why the programmers cant seem to figure this out since the hackers can so easily. perhaps some preventive code might help. like inability to replicate objects faster than say once every 10 seconds. better yet. encrypt the source before compiling.

  17. 17 Jillian Callahan Says:

I love that these no longer bring the grid down, just slow it. And without taking away any tools from us (limiting one a bit, but I can deal). =^.^=

  18. 18 Strife Onizuka Says:

^_^ i just love working on islands

  19. 19 Morse Dillon Says:

It occurs to me that since the self-replicating attacks have become a regular event, perhaps something beyond the ‘grey goo fence’ is required to control them.

One effective solution would be to restrict the usage of llRemoteLoadScriptPin to users with payment info on file. This would effectively eliminate the ability to create self-replicators with throwaway accounts. Malicious attacks would not only be greatly reduced, but should someone go ahead with one on a paying account you will have a place to start for proscecution purposes.

  20. 20 Bryan Thatcher Says:

    Blah…
    Two attacks…
Hmm. Well. I guess that’s why editing one object 47924837 times didn’t save.
    =/
    *Sigh*
Thanks for working on it. :)

  21. 21 Dianne Marsi Says:

I am having problems with getting items that I have bought out of the boxes. Does this have anything to do with it?

  22. 22 Arianna Oranos Says:

Since everyone says such attacks have increased considerably since you allowed free accounts, why don’t you restrict the powers of free account holders? For instance, you could disable them from creating and editing scripts.

  23. 23 Lewis Nerd Says:

The first I noticed was when “object” passed through my auto greeter system, and was welcomed to the Stratics HQ building.

  24. 24 Casidy Craig Says:

I got “attacked” by a replicating box-thing that followed me around, this was about 3 days ago. The owner of it was someone called “Drakkar Drake”. I wonder if that’s connected with the current grid attacks? Is it possible for the Lindens to somehow find all objects on the grid owned by the person involved, and just erase them, in the same way that a land owner can erase objects from his/her own land?

  25. 25 Luciftias Neurocam Says:

what happened to the grey goo fence? Someone finally outsmarted it?

  26. 26 Fushichou Mfume Says:

Beating a horse I wish weren’t dead: If LL would *stop* allowing account creation without requiring a verified credit card or other verified payment info, we would see a lot less of this crap. This is no less than 3 separate grid-wide replication attacks since Friday of last week.

  27. 27 Erami Quamar Says:

*sigh* Thanks for being here for us. You Lindens are all cool and technical-like. Not to mention still keeping Second Life up and running as well as you can after all these problems (which have been happening since before I joined, a couple days ago.)

  28. 28 Nathaniel Aleixandre Says:

thats funny high… any ways well the people responsable will they be removed from the game? will we know who did it to ban them from lands?

  29. 29 Darius Lehane Says:

One can assume that the avatar responsible is “no payment info on file” and that banning the avatar will do no good — the individual will just create a new avatar and do it again. Sadly without changes to rez sript capabilities, there will be no end. My suggestion — only scripts made by people with payment info on file, and marked “no mod”, should be allowed to rez inventory in the grid. That way a real person can be connected with the crime, and those who entertain themselves by griefing others will find life a lot harder.

  30. 30 Dreamer Poppy Says:

I think its really sad to think some people gets a kick out of assaulting SecondLife . Have they nothing better to do?

  31. 31 nitroburn Says:

Stop allowing the free accounts damn it! When will LL learn. Go back to requiring at least some form of identification like cellphone or credit information.

  32. 32 WhiteFire Sondergaard Says:

If you own a large portion of a sim like I do, turning off outside scripts and setting an autoreturn of “1″ helps. That’s assuming you have everything of yours set to group and all.

  33. 33 Takeshi Kiama Says:

Hi Stephanie! IM me in world, havent talked in a while. =^^= Well its back up, but the objects are all wonky. I’m told I cant edit things that I know are mine. Is this part of the issue too?

  34. 34 TigroSpottystripes Katsu Says:

shouldn’t the grey goo fence have caught this? where was the hole? (nevermind, I realise answering that would put the grid in even more risk before the hole is closed)

  35. 35 Savonah Madonna Says:

The profile belonging to the name on the replicating object shows that this person has no payment on file and was created two days ago… undoubtedly for this attack.

  36. 36 Sedalia Kavka Says:

Same issue. Different day. And 99% chance its the same person doing it to.

You dropped the credit card validation in order to increase your subscriber numbers. And, despite tons of comments and evidence to the contray, you continue to ignore the root cause - lack of verification and no way to tie one person to an account.

Yes, even with an account tied to a credit card or what-have-you, a person can still disrupt. but then that card is banned. Maybe they have 1-2 more they can use and get them banned as well. Pretty soon, one of two things will happen - either they have run out of cards to use and are therefore gone, or they realize their one last chance is the card they have and they behave themselves. End results: a grid that is up more than it is not, freed-LL time and resources, and the number of complaints about griefers will drop.

So, what is more important to you - a high subscriber base of alts and people waiting for that final straw before leaveing? Or a smaller base of people who WANT to be in SL and are actively using it to go forward — AND recommending it to friends?

Quality > Quantity in most places in the world outside California.

  37. 37 demonizer extraordinaire Says:

It seemed to be fixed for me when i cleared cache and reloged to sl.

but i noticed that it seems to happen mostly on teleport, like i was leaving a texture behind so to speak.

  38. 38 demonizer extraordinaire Says:

that is how i was experiencing missing image on clothing

  39. 39 Sasha Dasilva Says:

    Hi
I know this is a stupid question but what is a self replicating object? I Knew i was having alot of problems today in game but thought it was my computer. Thank God it isnt !!!

  40. 40 Ayumi Ziemia Says:

It seems like the problems are never ending, everything from database hacking to mass greifing. The question is, when is everything going to reach normalcy on SL once more. It seems like the past few weeks have inspired stupid people to do their best to ruin the system. Ive seen things recently that disturb me… people greifing left and right, verbal abuse, object assaults… and all for no reason… Maybe its time that the citizens of Secondlife start taking action for themselves. We have all the tools needed to stop the abuse. Land owners need to be more attentive to their users needs and moderators should be see more often. Script usage should be a payment info required thing. As someone said earlier, its linking a person to the crime. Crimes need to be punished swiftly and sternly. I do hope that things can make a full recovery, but this current path to destruction is winding down, and the end doesn’t look good. Best of luck to the Linden Team (we know you’re trying to only do good in this world).

  41. 41 RaptonX Zorger Says:

I’m getting rather tired of people like this doing these stupid attacks because they have nothing better to do.

  42. 42 Arianna Oranos Says:

Sedalia is absolutely right. You MUST demand that the account will be tied to a certain individual who will be held accountable for his or her actions. I think it’s a safe bet to say that the exact same person was behind these attacks. And I’m willing to bet his account had “no payment info on file”. Guess what Lindens… In most groups, we’re told “whenever you see ‘no payment info on file’, brace yourselves for trouble”. Decide what you want: a lot of freeloading griefers who’ll chase away the PAYING customers or a good bunch of satisfied users?

  43. 43 Fushichou Mfume Says:

The saddest part is that most of these griefers are probably people with regular verified accounts too. Most of the griefing incidents I’ve witnessed are too sophisticated to have been done by SL newcomers.

LL please please please either go back to fully-verified signup model or else take away the privs of an unverified account to execute any type of script. And if you do go back to a fully-verified model, please delete ALL the existing unverified AVs. It’s not like they bought anything that would be “lost”, right?

  44. 44 Fushichou Mfume Says:

I’ll also note that in all of the threads on this blog dealing with griefer issues, I’ve never seen a single respondent who says they like the current unverified signup system and asking you to please keep it and search for another way to deal with griefers. Not one. It seems the overwhelming resident sentiment is “stop it with the unverified accounts already!”

  45. 45 Khamon Says:

“The question is, when is everything going to reach normalcy on SL once more.” ~ Ayumi Ziemia

By definition Ayumi, this is normalcy.

  46. 46 Werner Klopek Says:

Those so-called “freeloaders” are in-fact SL content. If SL was limited to just those people who have paid LL $ directly, SL would be an empty wasteland, or rather more so.

As far as this “attack” goes, can’t LL just limit the number of objects are created per owner, in a specified period of time?

  47. 47 Kyushu Tiger Says:

Werner, someone doesn’t have to pay any money to be held accountable for their actions. They can provide payment info that can be verified, like with a credit card authorization, for example.

People could still use SL for free, but there would be RL consequences for their actions, as it was before the registration process was changed.

  48. 48 Cory Edo Says:

I’d like to echo what others have said here - its time to start demanding people be accountable for their actions when it comes to LSL. If you compare SL to web servers, would you let a complete stranger whom you had no information on have access to scripting tools that can bring down your server?

Block access to script creation and editing for unverified accounts, period. They can’t open the script editor, they can’t view scripts on their own or inside objects, and they can’t be transferred scripts on their own from other people. Execution of existing scripts inside objects would still be allowed. Anybody with an honest interest in scripting will know why its being put in place and why LL needs a way to hold individuals accountable.

IP bans and the like are weak and seemingly worthless for stopping attacks. Law inforcement is slow and we haven’t seen any results off that either, and while we’re waiting x amount of other people are grabbing the code from third party sites, making a throwaway account, and starting the whole process over again.

  49. 49 ETOX Pratt Says:

Here’s an idea, when you’re going to shut the grid down, tell us so we don’t try relog, kthx

  50. 50 Grazel Cosmo Says:

One thing to keep in mind with self-replicating objects: They exist in various newbie spots and are open source scripts so easy to put in new objects, and to even be unwittingly unleashed by a newbie rezzing the objects they picked up in a newbie kit. I got ‘attacked’ a couple monhts back by a self-replicating follow object called ‘herpes’ that was created by a Linden (though I think the object was full perms so prorbably just renamed but the object and follow script came from a Linden originally). It’s really not hard to make self-replicating, following, physics objects in SL and if they get into a parcel with no officers around and without autoreturn on they can keep causing problems. There’s no guaranteed fix besides removing the ability for an object to rez another object, and that’s something the Lindens won’t do I hope. What could work but may be hard to implement is a delay on the time intervals between rezzes and an object property (stored on all prims to avoid a link-break workaround) saying they were rezzed from another object so therefore can’t rez anything themselves.

60 Second Life Users Banned Over Grid Attack…

Linden Lab, the company behind the virtual world of Second Life, banned 60 accounts this week over what amounted to two distributed denial-of-service attacks perpetrated on the same day. The attacks, which involved seeding the SL Grid with self-replica…
