Announcing the 2006 Movie Trailer Contest Winner
Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006 at 4:33 PM by: Jesse LindenLike most software companies Linden Lab uses promotional videos to showcase our product to business partners, customers, educators, and more. However, we face a unique challenge in that selling Second Life to the uninitiated is nothing like pitching a new soft drink, detergent, or cake mix to a generally disinterested public. The challenge here is how to convey such a protean and complex experience in a short, easily digestible format. To this end, we decided the visual grammar of the Hollywood Movie Trailer would be the best vehicle to ‘get the word out’ about Second Life to the world.
Since our operating philosophy includes a fundamental belief in the value of user-created content, it made the most sense for us to open up the crucial task of evangelizing Second Life to our Residents. We figured…who best to highlight the incredible potential of Second Life than the people who are the most actively engaged in its creation?
This year our Second Annual Movie Trailer Contest submissions included everything from a castle adventure film to a fashion expose to a martial arts action short. In choosing the winner, we looked for a combination of creativity and orginality, editing technique, narrative strength, audio production, and highlights of the new features introduced within the last year.
To this end, we are pleased to announce that Second Life: Get One by Silver and Goldie Productions met and exceeded these qualifications. Silver and Goldie Goodman are relative newcomers to Second Life and are currently building out a Second Life machinima production studio on the island Studio Shores which they envision will become ‘the premier machinima production and resource center in SL, to serve RL clients.’
Second Life: Get One was shown to an enthusiastic response at the Second Life Community Convention this past weekend and will be posted to our homepage shortly. Links to the movie trailer, bio information, and much more are currently available at:

Congratulations to the winning team and we look forward to more great Second Life machinima production to come!

The vid is great, managed to catch it over a webcast- Also loved the presentation qDot Bunnyhug did on teledildonics with the Rez Trance Vibrator (fao: Tao and Timeless, this is the article I was referring to)
Also, I swear that’s the robot from FLCL right at the end.
PS: Please can we have the login feature for the blog so your blogmonkey doesn’t have to keep dealing with me and WordPress’s anti-spam features getting along. I’m sure there’s other good reasons for it, but that’s the one that’s bugging me

The text “www.silverandgoldie.LTSvideo.com” for the link is ok but the url it links to is http://blog.secondlife.com/www.silverandgoldie.LTSvideo.com which doesn’t work.

Nice movie but it was a lot of shoot em up and driving vehicles. Not SL’s strong point nor the average interest of its residents… I guess a trailer of women shopping, people dancing and a builder making a house would have been a bit slow.

Hagrid, our trailer was entered in the action/adventure category. It happened to win best-of-show, but it was not intended to display all of what SL has to offer. There were 8 categories for entering a trailer, including ones for fashion & design, music and building. I don’t know who won those. There is so much more in this trailer than shoot-em-up and vehicles. Please watch it again.

In reply to Bitter Lemonhead’s interpretation of Jesse’s quote: It may be “community sourcing,” but that’s what is great about it. No one forced us to produce a trailer. Instead, by providing the SL service and inviting residents to use their own creativity in the contest, Linden expressed confidence in the talents of the SL community and they supplied both the tools and the incentive to stretch our minds and our expand our skills in machinima-making. We accepted the challenge willingly, and appreciate the opportunities that this contest has afforded us.
